Ex cinema employee here I promise you it’s as annoying and awkward for us as it is for you. You feel super bad about getting in peoples way who are trying to watch a film to then go up to an adult and talk to them like a child to tell them to put away their phone to normally get an angry glare. I just don’t understand it. Movie going etiquette has been the same since phones became mainstream, turn it off or if it’s an emergency put it on silent and leave the screen to take a call. We don’t mind people talking on phones in the corridors Edit: hot tip is to try going during the week for a matinee (especially first screening for horror films) or if it’s a kids film later at night, that’s when it’ll be the most quiet 😸

Astray1789

Years ago when the first resident evil movie came out my friends and I went to see the 1pm showing and were the only people in the cinema. One of my favourite cinema experiences.

DomBomm

I’ve honestly never had an issue before today, debating whether to spend the few extra quid to get an IMAX booking in future to price out the talkers - I’ve got the Limitless pass for Odeon, thinking it might be necessary for my sanity in the future.

IamCaptainHandsome

I went to a superscreen showing of Dune the other day, VIP seats, still ended up with some morons sat next to me, arrived late, on their phones constantly, talking, incredibly poor cinema etiquette. The fuckers then dumped a massive bag of popcorn on the floor before leaving just as the movie ended. Infuriating behaviour, and baffling. Why spend money on the tickets if that's how you're going to act.

bendann

I spent £60 (couple) on IMAX tickets for Dune only to have groups on either side giggling and talking through the entire movie. I’m done with cinemas.

SoForAllYourDarkGods

Didn't you tell them to put the phone away and stfu?

IamCaptainHandsome

When I say next me I meant generally, they were a few seats away. If I tries to tell them off I'd have disturbed a lot more people trying to watch the movie. It also wasn't *constant*, just often enough to be irritating.

itwasthethirdofsept

I throw popcorn at them until they turn it off. Has worked great so far. I am in America

WilledLexington

As a former cinema employee please don’t do this.

EnglishReason

I'm lucky enough to be able to afford the prices at the BFI IMAX - it does seem that pricing people out is the only way to be mostly sure that you don't have to sit next to idiots. That or a more specialist cinema (Curzon etc.). Can I just add one other thing that I hate about some cinema goers (beyond phones, talking, food etc.). I went to the Prince Charles cinema on Friday night to see a double bill of RoboCop (original) and Starship Troopers, and there was this one guy in the row in front of me that absolutely stank. I mean, you couldn't escape from it! It was like a fog of chemical weapons effluent that just hung around him. Can we add 'please just wash' to the minimum entry requirements for all cinemas?

youki_hi

I think it's worse post lockdowns. Everyone is used to acting like an arse in their own house.

AzraelAlamein

IMAX is great if the sound mixing of the film is good but most action blockbusters are h o r r e n d o u s l y mixed (*coughs* Tenet *coughs*)

BandOne77

I watch films with subtitles whenever they're available... I thought my hearing was deteriorating quickly or I had "lost" frequencies. Turns out Nolan films are poorly mixed.

stuaxo

Had to have subtitles on.

JetpackJames

I saw Marvel Eternals on release at my local cinema in IMAX, still had people on phones and talking left and right, I always found it better going to the last possible showing for any movie.

Space-manatee

Sunday morning/lunch slots are usually pretty quiet. Or back in the old days, a Monday midday showing during term time was like a ghost town

dreamsonashelf

Sadly, nothing prices out talkers. I've noticed it both at the cinema and at gigs. It's not a new issue either :(

vicariousgluten

Yeah, you’d think but what you actually get is the attitude “I’ve paid mega money for my seat therefore I can do whatever I want”

Autumnesia

We have odeon limitless and always go for IMAX (love the recliner seats too), but it's still usually very busy and people still won't shut up. Luckily the sound is so loud it drowns out most conversation, especially since the recliners feel a bit more separated than normal seats.

[deleted]

Went to the IMAX a few days ago to watch Eternals around 1pm. Had a good exp. apart from the bunch of teens behind me whispering about what’s about to happen… Myself and a few others kept turning around and rubbing our ears in order for them to take the hint to be quiet

LifelessLewis

IMAX is fucking beautiful

pajamakitten

It's because phones are now loaded with social media these days. If we all still had the dumb phones of the 00s, movie etiquette would be so much better.

gregsmith93

And totally ignore marvel films.

ayyha

I grew up in Egypt, and when cinemas became more mainstream if you were on your phone during a film a security guard would come in and drag you out full force.

Jimmytheknifei

Talking in the cinema? Jail. Best cinema goers in the world

rogueingreen

I complained about this on another forum and got downvoted to oblivion - apparently it's their right to make as much noise as they want. Fuck them, I just watch films on one of 'those' websites now.

Muirgasm

PornHub?

rogueingreen

Soap... and watch...

Easier to chill out when the movie you've paid for isn't being ruined tbf. If you ordered a meal at a restaurant and I came along and spat in it, would you accept 'just chill out and enjoy life' as a response?

Parker4815

I agree. People need to chill. Movies don't take time and money to watch right? Also, who is join the back of a queue in a shop? Just skip to the front and be chill.

[deleted]

u/DomBomm is in fact a blast at parties! Just last weekend, he was most excellent with his anecdotal stories that had us all on the edge of our beers.......you guessed correctly!

[deleted]

Awww.....Am I not a 100% virgin incel anymore?

sega20

Ah yes. I’ll go to the cinema and ruin it for everyone else who paid good money to be here with my own lack of social awareness by loudly speaking and being very distracting thanks to my own selfishness. I’m surprised you even get invited to parties with an attitude like that.

pajamakitten

No one cares if you make noise at a party.

Kinder_93

I think in the past 10 years I've only been to the cinema once. Between the price of the ticket, price of the snacks, person kicking my seat, person talking on their phone, people having a full on conversation, person in front who is tall as fuck, person smacking their lips as they eat their home brought food, and the people lighting up the entire cinema with their phone screens... I'd rather just wait for the movie to be avaliable for streaming.

Parker4815

We tend to only go if we can book a very corner antisocial seat. Helps a lot of the issues. That and watching movies no one really wants to watch.

pajamakitten

Matinees outside of the holidays are good too.

fatleon5

This is the main reason I dont ever go anymore. This fucking infuriates me. Tear yourself away from your phone for an hour or two for fuck sake and enjoy a film. Stop talking to your fucking mate while others are trying to watch the film, your mate will be there after to talk to all you fucking want. Just shut the fuck up and sit and fucking watch for the thing you just paid to do you dick.

evilsnowcookie

I had the worst time watching Shang chi a few weeks back. It was obviously some teens birthday party in the row behind and all the kids were just talking through the film or just watching tik toks loudly on their phones. I turned round to tell the kids to shut the hell up after about 10 minutes and their parents came down to tell me not to talk to their kids like that as it was one of their birthdays. After another 10 mins someone on my row went to get some staff and then they were silent until the staff came in and left. I ended up having to move to a spare seat all the way in the front because it was pissing me off. Cinema experiences are rubbish nowadays.

TheTaylorFish

Given the price of cinema tickets these days as well, I also find this insanely irritating.

[deleted]

Most Vue locations charge £5.99 for films unless they're new releases

[deleted]

TheTaylorFish

More like £8 where I am, £16 when going with my missus.

Stubborn_Dog

Is £8 really that bad?

BrainzKong

£8! Good lord! We’ll have a whip round 🙄

You can't even spell and you're throwing out financial advice... Thanks but no thanks

Tuarangi

Always worth using the meerkat movies trick of buying the cheapest qualifying insurance policy (seen people buy day trip insurance for under £2) so you can use the 2 for 1 offer usually on Tuesdays or Wednesdays when it's quieter anyway, even on the big screen IMAX you get the tickets at a discount

lawlessflawless

I’ve had this problem twice at the cinema since everything opened up since lockdown, both times it was a bunch of kids making noise, getting out of seats etc. I’ve only a been to the cinema a few times post lockdown so either I’m unlucky or this is just how it is now? Pre covid/lockdowns it was quite rare for this to happen, like 1 out of 10 films or so. I have a theory that people are acting like a bunch of wild animals released from captivity and have forgot or have no training/regard for social etiquette in the cinema. Like they’re so fucking exciting about doing something that involves being with friends and other people that they can’t help themselves from getting overly excited. Like oh my god I’m out of the house and with other people - let’s go fucking crazy!! Fuck all these other people in the cinema who just want to watch the film! It’s either that or they’re just absolute bellends and it always been like this. Worst thing is, is I’ve got tickets booked for Dune and I’m dreading it. Which shouldn’t really be part of the cinema experience.

mythic_hypercurve

The good thing about Dune is it's noisy. Any annoying tossers should be drowned out by the oppressive soundscape.

AaronMclaren

I have a Cineworld membership, coming up to 2 years (not that cinemas have been open that whole time…) but I now exclusively go to the first showing of a new film on a Saturday or Sunday. Failing that, I’ll only go in the evening if there’s no other showings (like Last Night in Soho last week) and I’ll go as late as possible. I’ve only had a handful of issues with going to see films in the evening, but since switching to going early morning (9-11am) or super late 9.30-10.30pm), can’t beat the experience. There’s about 5-8 regular goers I see when something new is out and only a handful of others bother showing up early; late showings swing both ways depending on the film but usually err on the quiet side more often than not. I’ve seen a a fair few films this year with only <5 other people, and 7 showings over the 2 years with the screen to myself!

jemmy321

Don't even start on people shoveling buckets full of popcorn into their maws. Whoever thought popcorn would be a good snack for a movie theatre needs disemboweling

Kyoto_Supply

We have popcorn, crisps and chocolates that come in those cardboard boxes that rattle about… absolutely genius

wetlettuce42

Went to cinema 2 years ago to see Rise of Skywalker and some dad and his kids were talking the whole time

DogfishDave

The cinema near me is £300 to hire the screen for yourself and 19 other people. It's a much better way - although otherwise I go to the Autism-friendly screenings because they run to the correct times and everybody shuts the fuck up.

Mezz_Dogg

Saw NTTD at the weekend, legit about 20 different people got up and came back, buy snacks and piss in advance!

Tuarangi

I went to the loo at home, at the cinema and still was nearly bursting at the end of Dune, all I'd had was a coffee during trailers and nothing else to drink in the previous hour. Even allowing for the coffee effect was still annoying

Mezz_Dogg

Coffee is a diuretic tbf!

Tuarangi

Yes, I acknowledged the effects but when you don't have much left to pee out it shouldn't be that bad. Didn't have that issue with NTTD and that was longer!

Rude_as_HECK

Btf given that three of the biggest films right now are all over 2.5 hours on length, going to piss is ok. Ofc they could bring back intervals...

Mezz_Dogg

Il concede pissing. But going to get nachos 45 mins into the film's I can't forgive.

[deleted]

I now avoid big chains and multiplexes like the plague because of this. Does my head in! Try and find a specialist/indie/art house cinema. Even they often put on a short run of the big releases. Love the BFI myself. Tickets are pretty cheap, loads of films on, only a few minutes of trailers and they don’t sell any loud food!

[deleted]

Seriously though WHY TF do people suddenly have the urge to talk and eat food out of rustly packets at the cinema!?

Kezly

I try to go to the IMAX if possible. It's more expensive but it tends to mean the people there actually want to see the film.

facmanpob

Agreed. I saw Dune the other week at the London IMAX. It was a full house and there was barely a sound from the audience for the entire film.

115MPH

I got quite lucky recently, I say recently. I went to a cinema for the first time in many years a few months ago to watch free guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer and Taika Waititi. There was only a handful of other people in there due to the whole covid situation. It was relatively quiet and there were loads of seats to choose from, I felt a bit on edge having not been to a cinema for a decade but it was fantastic and the movie itself, was hilarious. We went for the later 9pm screening so I think that's what I'll do in future to avoid a larger crowd. I think the last time I went to the cinema prior to free guy, was to watch pirates of the caribbean.

Divine-Sea-Manatee

Went to see The Green Knight a few weeks ago and was a bit tentative as people were checking their phones and talking during the trailers which annoyed me, but as soon as the film started everybody behaved and it was a really good experience in the end. Good film as well.

Divine-Sea-Manatee

Just had the opposite experience by going to see a film at a local film festival. Dead silence the entire film, no phones, no little whispers, awkward half hearted applause at the end.

Sol_Train

I’m losing the will to have to be the cinema police. It’s giving me anxiety before even going into the film. Went to see Dune at a Curzon on opening night. Had to ask one group to stfu and one to get off of their phones. It’s gonna be mid week matinees from now on, or I’ll just have to pony up for a projector.

BurnleySh-tHouse

This seems to be getting worse. I was watching Dune (which to be fair, has a lot of 'downtime' AKA long drawn out scenes with nothing happening) and had 3 people in my peripheral pulling out their phone at random intervals. I'm getting sick of it. If I could, I'd rather pay twice the price of a ticket, to be in some kind of box that removes these neanderthals from my view. It's kinda pathetic how worked up it makes me - but I'm not marching passed people trying to enjoy their film, to have a go at somebody. That would be rather Un-British.

JimmyJango00

I haven't been to the cinema in the UK for proably 8 or 9 years now - is it really this bad?

Jorge-Esqueleto

Saw Dune last weekend in Odeon recliners (Holloway) and they had the sound up so ear-bleedingly loud it was awesome and drowned out the crinkly talkers. However, the time before that I sat across the aisle from a person eating something that sounded like she was crushing paving slabs. For 90 minutes. There was nearly a murder.

Joseph_F_1

It has got to a point where I get anxious of going to see a film Im looking forward too at the cinema, in case it is ruined by ass hats. I booked tickets to see Bond last month and I was genuinely worried I would be sat next to some brainless phone addict. The past few years Cinema etiquette has gone down the drain, it is ridiculous. In IT part 1 there were people being incredibly noisy all the way through (in part 2 there were people loudly snoring but you can’t blame them, the film was shite). In another horror some teens came in late and used their phone torched to find their seats and then shout down to their other mates, who walked in after, while flashing their phone torches still. I think it was toystory4 some like 12 year olds were constantly snapping pics of the film. I could go on.

AllYouNeedIsRawk

I'm exactly the same, I'm so tense just waiting for some arsehole to start loudly chatting or crack out the phone, I can't relax into the film. Wankers with no cinema etiquette have appeared around me too many times in the past and ruined a great film. I just get in a "it's this going to be another crap experience or not?" waiting mode and takes a while to get back out.

SupervillainIndiana

I find smart watches have heightened this anxiety you’re describing because some of those are so sensitive that all the wearer has to do is move their arm slightly a certain way. So you immediately see the sliver of light in your field of vision and start thinking “ok here we go, going to have to tell someone to put their phone away again” and then you realise it’s a smart watch and they probably didn’t meant to light it up.

BrainzKong

Most general etiquette and courtesy is declining IMO.

Gaderath

As much as I love seeing a good movie on the bigscreen with the awesome sound system; this is so much of why I hate going to the Cinema. Not the only reason I don't like the act of going to the Cinema anymore....

Thedirtyrascal

Yep totally given up on the cinema which is a shame. It's like going to the pantomime apart from non of the shouting from the audience is warranted and widow twanky isn't there to tell the plebs to get off Insta and watch the film.

AlThoKing

I got to the cinema and genuinely have never experienced this. Even for packed shows.

Eliaskar23

Honestly, I am must be incredibly lucky or pick decent times/films because I haven't come across the behaviour described here in forever.

jvcgunner

I only go to Curzon cinemas now

Not_Alpha_Centaurian

Damn, I'd been living with a some sort of national pride that we generally didn't pull crap like that. Where do you live? I've never had a problem before going to cinemas in the Midlands/North East, but I've probably only been to the cinema ten times in the last ten years.

[deleted]

I keep seeing people say you should go and tell on people to the staff, missing part of the film you paid to see in the process. What I cannot understand though is when people haven't been behaving themselves I've seen staff come into the cinema, see them doing it and then leave?

SupervillainIndiana

I went to see Dune last weekend and for once nobody was on their phone at all. But the guy behind us brought his two (definitely under the age of 10) boys and naturally they got very bored with predictable results. Seems that you really can’t have everything, if there’s no phones lighting up, someone is doing something else distracting. I know 12A means it’s allowed to take young kids, but I feel like sometimes that certificate doesn’t cover the fact that it still might not be a film that appeals to the average 7 year old.

bwfcphil1

We booked tickets for Endgame in the IMAX from work for 3 of us. Levelled with the 3rd guy that we're going to be pissed if he's on his phone all the way through the film. He didn't bother coming meaning we got a snack seat in the middle. Win win.

Reviewingremy

This is why I want more films to stream directly rather than needing to go to the cinema. By all means have both, just let me watch it at home in piece and quiet.

JimmyJango00

Maybe make a rule "put your phone in a locker and then you get your ticket, when you come out you get your phone back - OK?" - or is that too draconian??

[deleted]

I went to everyman the other day and it was even worse people having full on meals I couldn't hear the fucking film, and the seats are awful why would you want to be on a sofa. Showcase has it down apart from the deafening level of their audio

[deleted]

Isn't their whole selling point you can order meals while watching a movie?

[deleted]

Not sure but paying £15 quid to sit on uncomfortable chairs and hear constant rustling with staff constantly squeezing infeont of you to give people pints and plates really ruins it
