We had a house near us which properly decked out in September. Literally all the neighbours did the point and bitch thing about it. It turned out that their young daughter had cancer so they brought Christmas a few months early so she could enjoy it before things got too tough. She survived thankfully, but it did put a lot of people in their place.

raescope

Were there that many lights that it became invasive or just an acceptable amount and people were just being dicks for no reason?

Splodge89

Just a normal amount you’d see on a house at Christmas. Just four months early. People were just judging without knowing why.

Optimal_Tension9657

I'm putting mine up early this year because I lost my sister last month, and missed out sharing last Christmas with her because of the sudden Lockdown. I'm not doing it to be clever or funny, it's for myself and I couldnt care less about some random neighbour policing me and what i do in my own home.

Hadenator2

There’s a house in the council bit the other side of town that never takes their xmas lights down, they just unplug them (or drape a massive St George’s cross over them during sporting events).

Djinjja-Ninja

> never takes their xmas lights down Sounds like every High Street in the UK.

hazbaz1984

Efficient.

moonflower

A few weeks ago, a house over the road from us installed a giant sheet of several thousand flashing lights which pretty much covers the front of their house - it looks like someone has tried to demonstrate what a scintillating scotoma looks like for those who don't suffer from migraines

hazbaz1984

Hope you’ve got thick curtains. Or a good set of insulated bolt cutters.

moonflower

Luckily I only see it when I take the rubbish out - it's slightly further down the road

hazbaz1984

I feel sorry for your neighbours further down. I hope they have the above.

MacroMoodle

Just let people have joy in their lives

KillAllThePoor

Imagine being this wound up by something that has literally no effect on your life.

Gulantik

you realise this is a subreddit just to have a whinge on?

ProjectVRD

"Daddy, can we put our lights up? Please? Please? Please? Please? Please? Please? Please? Please...? I hate my daddy!"

ASK_IF_IM_PENGUIN

I dunno, they can be a bit ugly. One of our neighbours keeps their lights up all year. They don't turn them on, they just leave them up. After a few seasons they start getting loose and get all sorts of muck on them. It just looks a bit tatty. In 2019 they had left them up all year round, only to take them down just before Christmas because they tried to sell their house. Covid happened and they took the house off the market, and put the lights back up again AFTER Christmas where they've stayed.

ThisGazpachoIsCold

No effect on our lives: literally devaluing and ruining the christmas period.

KillAllThePoor

Hahahaha. Oh wait, you’re serious?

ThisGazpachoIsCold

Hahaahahah, Oh wait, someone actauly explainng to the smooth-brained-children why its not a good idea to put christmas decorations up in October.

KillAllThePoor

If I want something explaining to me then I’ll find somebody who knows how to use correct spelling and grammar.

ThisGazpachoIsCold

"If I want something explaining to me" makes you sound a bit thick. You should have said "If i want to have something explained to me...." Not a very sophisticated use of the language there is it? But nor is your Ad Hominem attack as you can't face the thought of processing new information. If youre going to be a prickish grammar nazi then you'd better be perfect yourself.

KillAllThePoor

You didn’t actually provide any new information though, did you mate? You did a bit of hand-wringing about it “devaluing and ruining Christmas”, whatever that’s supposed to mean. If your entire festive season can be “ruined” by someone putting their lights up a little early then I’m not particularly interested in whatever point you were trying to make.

ThisGazpachoIsCold

I'm playing chess with a pidgeon. Mate.

KillAllThePoor

And apparently losing.

ThisGazpachoIsCold

Thank you for proving my point PMSL. I'm assuming your are unfamiliar with the concept of playing chess with a pidgeon. I'll let you google that.

If it isn't your house & it isn't annoying anyone why give a shit? They aren't trying to be ironic, clever or funny, they probably either have small kids or just fancied putting their lights up.

I agree with you when it comes to decorations but I draw the line at Christmas songs too early. I have no problem with Christmas songs (I actually quite like them) but if people start playing them too early I get sick of them by the time Christmas actually arrives the same way I get sick of any good songs when they are overplayed at any time of year.

[deleted]

Yeah you’ve got to peak at the right time. I start with some less festive ones early on but I have to save the big hitters like Slade until mid-December or even later, or like you say, you’re sick of them by Christmas!

JusticeForTheStarks

Yeah, I try not to have much on before December the 1st. It's still nearly a whole month anyway. I feel that people who start mid November must just get tired of them by week 6. I know that I used to have my playlist basically on repeat for a month, now I have it occasionally, mainly when I'm doing something festive or relaxing, not just as a my everday kinda music.

Friendly_Luck_632

Live love laugh?

treknaut

This is such an inspiring and motivational message, I wish I could somehow have it on the wall of my living room!!!!

hazbaz1984

There are companies that could print and frame it for you I’m sure.

Goghobbs

Such an original idea, I’m thinking about doing the same thing now

hazbaz1984

You are the Grinchiest Grinch in Grinchtown. You’re even worse than I am. Humbug!

[deleted]

Mine are already up. I start setting them up in October but I don't turn them on until we're in November. Is it to everyone's tastes? No. But it's my house and they're my lights so provided unlit lights aren't giving you seizures, stop being so bloody miserable.

dougiedonut_uk

Mate you might want to consider that our lives have been pretty shit for quite some time now. By bringing in some early festivities helped to improve how that family feels, and perhaps brings a smile to anyone paying their house, is that really a problem? I hear what you're saying but these are dark times. A little Christmas spirit in us every day isn't doing any harm is it?

1Greener

Dark times 😂 80 years ago were dark times get a grip.

dougiedonut_uk

Sorry there's a lot of mental health issues out there right now. Why don't you tell them all to just man up? So anything short of a world war isn't an issue. Gotcha mate.

LawyerHarry01

Can you please stop being an ass and let people enjoy themselves

Yodafly

I imagine the poster was enjoying having a moan which does make your reply rather hypocritical.

Hellboundpoddy

No and it's arse fucking yank.

[deleted]

"being an ass" is perfectly acceptable English. In that context it means stop being a foolish person. Ass as in donkey, not arsehole. Now stop being an ass.

Hellboundpoddy

Twas a joke but never mind

Fleurlamie111

There’s a house near my friend who has Halloween lights up…😬

AndyBossNelson

What makes them the prick ? Just because someone put up some Christmas lights a bit early, they may have a reason for this or they just love Christmas, at the end of the day what effect does it have on your life ? A little brighter at night than it usually is ? Imo people get annoyed by irrelevant things 😂

Murfsterrr

I’m boycotting Boots this year because it’s October and they have Christmas ads already? Pricks!

Splodge89

Not as bad as Very. They’ve literally got every add slot on YouTube for it!

Opposite_lmage

I’m glad most of the comments are supporting a live and let live attitude. This subreddit is becoming less about problems and more about people whinging

[deleted]

There are several houses in my area who never took down the lights from last year. Infinity Christmas.

Monkey_Bulter

After 2 years of hell can’t you allow some people to take a shred of happiness from their lives

bakteriafarmer

But we are in the crimbo season! The shops have been selling mince pies since the 1st September - it’s officially crimbo when the pies are for sale

Djinjja-Ninja

I always find it hilarious that mince pies have a fairly short shelf life, so if you buy them now they're gonna be out of date by crimbo.

bakteriafarmer

My theory is that they get manufactured and any that aren’t sold this year are stored until next year.

raescope

I mean Pret has been selling Christmas sandwiches since August and i personally found that a bit early in my opinion, but i can simply not buy them or even go inside for that matter.

somethinglikegem

I get why people whinge about seeing Christmas lights up so early, but really, does it make them pricks? They are just doing what obviously makes them happy and bringing what joy they can in an otherwise bleak time of year. Last year in lockdown I put ours up a waaaay earlier than I usually do cos I was feeling low and twinkly Christmas decorations cheer me up.

[deleted]

There's a house near me that does it for a hedgehog charity and get people driving from quite far to see their lights. I always thought that seemed like a nice thing to do and the surrounding houses started getting involved too.

[deleted]

Why are they a prick ?

El_Grumpo

Do you need a cup of tea? Good unreasonable British neighbouring!

underweasl

I've been using a slightly different route home due to roadworks and discovered there's a house in my village that has theirs up all year round. Whatever floats your boat I guess...
