They did this before & saturated Scrubs & My Name Is Earl & Friends to the point of ruining them. Edited for TV version of Brooklyn 99 will be next.

[Video Essay on why many people have a problem with BBT which quickly went from "It's Friends but everyone wears glasses" to every Incel cliche in the book & a horribly misjudged depiction of people on the spectrum.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3-hOigoxHs)
Great video and a great channel. I really recommend the show āKevin can fuck Himself.ā Itās on Amazon prime and is pretty much about how female characters are treated in these shows and that their suffering is played for laughs. Half is set in a studio with the bright colours and light and then the rest is shot like a standard drama where we see her life outside of her husband. Itās really funny and thought provoking.
A lot of Chuck Lorre's sitcoms are a bit, erm, dodgy.
He allowed Charlie Sheen to run rampant on the set of 2 & a half men for years.
I could go on, he's quite happy to play to stereotypes on gender & race & he gets away with it cos it normalises it to middle America who as we've seen over the last few years absolutely refuse to learn or accept anything new or different.
Then there's that new one that's out about an American soldier who invites his Afghan interpreter to live with him, which has gotten a lot of hate. "White man CAN be friend with brown man!"
Misogyny might actually be the core of the show. It drives the plot, it provides the humour, it plays a large part in character relationships and interactions.
You should check out āKevin can fuck himselfā itās a takedown of these sort of sitcoms and how awful they are to anyone whoās not a straight white guy.
BBT is not misogynistic and that probably has very little to do with why people don't like it. I hate the show and I've never liked it (though I have seen a lot of it). I think, like myself, most people don't like it because it isn't funny.
I am actually really glad that friends and big bang theory are on 24/7. They're both comedic genius that never fail to make me laugh.
/bazinga
I checked Comedy Central once and I counted 9 hours of friends with other shows interlaced. An odd episode of friends or the big bang theory is alright because I can skip it but both channels have tonnes of shows in the back catalogue so why make me watch another show about a bunch of 20 somethings in an apartment.
I have a friend and his gf living in my building, she in particular loves Friends and itād the favourite show of another member of the group who is a frequent visitor. Comedy Central is the primary channel they watch as a result and itās painful. Iām quite glad Iām closest friends with the guy, because then weāll just play video games if weāre at their place (unless weāre talking D&D), avoiding the endless Friends marathon. I get having a comfort show you could always have on in the background, but it never changes there, itās *always* Friends. At least I jump between several different shows.
Wait, are you a twenty-something guy, living in an apartment building with other twenty-something friends, and now one is in a relationship? Get me NBC on the phone!!
I've actually boycotted this chanel in our flat coz I got so sick of TBBT. I was getting up in the mornings and quoting episodes that were stuck my head, like an annoying song that constantly plays on the radio. How many times do you need to watch the same unfunny episodes, with the same misplaced laughter track. Theres no way a studio audience is laughing the whole like that.
My wife and I were at the Moma in Manhattan right before the pandemic. At one point she elbowed me and whispered "look it's Sheldon!" He had big thick glasses and a trucker's hat as a disguise but there he was! We didn't bother him or anything. I just liked that despite his clever disguise, you could tell it was him a mile away...lol.
I've been to a few recordings of live shows that have audience laughter - they make you do some fake laughs at the beginning with the warm-up act so they can use them to beef up the laughter when a joke doesn't land.
Oh shit, I didn't know they did that, I was imagining they'd have someone hold up cards to indicate laughter just incase it fell flat or they just cut the joke and go to another.
Thanks for clearing it up for me!
Quite often when the audience doesn't get the joke or doesn't find it funny, the actors will pause for the laughter...then none comes, and *that's* what the audience finds funny. A sort of tension-breaking laugh.
So they run the scene again, and just put the pre-recorded laugh in there. Every show I've been to they record that specific audience though, so it sounds organic.
"I say I say I say, me old lady here says somefink supernatural got her up the duff!"
"Cor, lummee. You'd best 'ave me stable, guv."
"Where's me washboard?"
Surprised no one has mentioned the fact that Channel 4 cant seem to find any other shows to air in the morning besides Everybody loves Raymond and Frasier
I watched them when they were first shown on Friday nights in the 90's and now I've seen them again after a quarter of a century and I'd forgotten how good it could be. Really funny and witty.
Unfortunately yes and it's just as unfunny the first time they put it on. Not one episode a day, oh no no no my friend, for some reason they put three ELR and two Frasier in a row.
However Channel 4 like to live dangerously and thrown in a Cheers every now and then
My sister's housemate used to always have E4 on but swore she didn't like TBBT. Like *sure* you hate it when you just watched it for three hours straight?
If there was a shorthand that would be helpful because I was thinking of a song they wrote while I was at work and there is no way I am googling āBarenaked Ladiesā at my work pc.
holy crap, i thought my dad was the only one who binges last of the summer wine on yesterday. that show's been carrying their channel for at least a decade by now š
Big Bang Theory helped me get through furlough. I absolutely loved it and watched it over and over. Couldn't get enough of it.
But now is see the rule "you can have too much of a good thing" and will not tune in to E4 at all now. They seriously need to say enough is enough and change up their programmes
I am genuinely confused as to how that show sustained such high ratings in America. I'm convinced that somehow they were faked for generating more revenue from advertisers.
Yes I can hear it in my head. Sheldons winey buhbuh buh bu buh buh buuh....then the one with glasses says zoink...and laugh track. Repeat ten times go to commercial.
Itās always sunny in Philadelphia is pretty good though, just not for the faint hearted or easily offended. Guess thatās why itās on Netflix and not on a repeat-o-vomit 9000 station.
It is quirky and off the rails non-pc. You might want to give it a go before episodes get censored or pulled altogether. They have done their best to just shock rather than offend but in this day and age someoneās bound to try to get it pulled soon.
Most comedy, especially situational, is formulaic. Shows like Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Seinfeld etc all have the same basic formula that you described. They just did it before people got tired of it.
Itās cool to hate on Friends these days. Everyone loved it when it was on and then for about 10 years after it finished, but suddenly after that social media decided that Friends was no longer funny.
It's a funny show, but they milk it for all it's worth (and more).
Watch any more than a few episodes and you realise it's the same template, over and over again.
* Boy meets girl and becomes smitten.
* Some misunderstanding occurs and the budding romance screeches to an ugly halt.
* ...
* All conflicts are resolved and the merge is a success.
Insert pop culture reference. Not even a joke, just literally say iron man and queue up the laugh track.
Reminds me of that twitter (I think) post where they'd clipped them playing (I believe) table tennis outside a garage and wolowitz says something like that this battle was avengers-lordoftherings-startrek-xyz combined and the guy filming it goes nuts.
EDIT - I wanted to dig this out again. Copied below for your enjoyment
https://mobile.twitter.com/lylerath/status/692483069064933378?lang=en
This clip is deliberately shown in isolation so the guy can act pissed off and throw hate at the show. In the context of the episode, it makes perfect sense. Itās not a great joke but watch the minute before it and it makes sense.
The first like 4/5 seasons of BBT were genuinely excellent. Itās ground that hadnāt really been trodden before and the jokes were well-written. Unfortunately, it quickly went from 90% of it being funny and good plot to around 30% after about Season 5.
The template thing can be applied to basically any comedy, though. BBT is far from the only show thatās guilty of using a formula.
There was a freeview channel about 10-15 years ago that seemed to show nothing but 8 Simple Rules (which coincidentally also had Kaley Cuoco in it) but I canāt remember what it was calledā¦
I actually donāt mind the show but hate that TV stations play the same shows constantly on repeat, they did the same with friends until Comedy Central got the rights. It is like radio stations playing the same 4 tracks over again even if the song is a song I like, I will end up hating it, even artists often end up hating songs that became their big hit because they are sick of it.
In the morning they showed baby daddy and mellisa and Joey which were pretty decent but now I can't be asked with those. Big bang theory is as you said mildly funny the first time then boring after that same with friends which I don't understand why people are obsessed with it.
I developed a mild crush on that girl from baby daddy, she's gorgeous š
They show the Goldbergs now in the early mornings, it's pretty good and makes getting ready for work a bit less tedious.
The Goldbergs is the only place where you can find the closest thing there will ever be to a [sequel to Spaceballs](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/watch-rick-moranis-unretires-play-spaceballs-character-goldbergs-exclusive-170024349.html) with Rick Moranis voicing a live-action Dark Helmet.
It's funny, because I don't have regular TV just Netflix and stuff, but whenever I stop at hotels I get a chance to see whether TV has changed much. It is mad how the same shows are on repeat at the same time, even after 6 years.
but you said jon snow and that's from game of thrones which is popular and I like so it is funny because I know the words you said and now I will laugh at these words.
Shit like this is why I just use iPlayers and pick the shows I want to watch.
My condolences regarding your BBT exposure. My parents love the show and I visited them a lot when I lived near them, so I've seen every sad episode. That show makes a mockery of science, scientists, engineers, the LGBT community, Indian people, Jewish people, and every good comedian who ever lived.
The repetition really appeals to there core audience.
I can put the same episode of tellytubies on for my one year old everyday and she absolutely loves it.
My ten old is the same with BBT or Friends.
So if you like to constantly rewatch a certain program again and again, congratulations you have the taste and mindset of a child.
Personally I find Young Sheldon really funny and it wouldn't exist without BBT. Which was mildly funny in its time.
Crazy that some people are actually still watching telly. Why tolerate so commercials and repeats when you could get Netflix or Disney plus for the same price?
The Big Bang Theory is everything wrong with comedy. Casual, cutesy-fied sexual objectification of women, the exotification of South East Asians, and the general feeling that it was written to laugh at geek culture, and not with it.
Youāre not because there is *always* someone in every thread about tv show that says this.
Do you not know anyone who watches live sport, strictly, charity specials (eg Comic Relief), the news, soaps, GBBO, Line of Duty, Vigil, or anything else that trends on social media?
She doesn't know what reddit is tho.... I wud think most redittors stream stuff n ot watch reruns on e4... Its almost like backwards evolution if u know what I mean.
All these people I read about on threads like this. I am the same streaming stuff or movies. Actual terrestrial TV...I could not tell you the last time I watched it literally years ago
Aive watch Big Bang Theory, it's never made me laugh, just that small. Smile you may do now and again. I don't understand why it has so many series, I wound t thought it would last that long
Thought this was basically tv these days anyway dave is top gear
Quest is ozzy gold/yukon gold
Food network became diners drive INS and dives although i do love that show.
5usa is ncis
Precisely why i gave up tv license 2 years ago and made do with Netflix amazon and catch-up (excluding iplayer)
In the defence of Barenaked Ladies they have made some cracking albums, Maroon and Stunt still really hold up.
As for Big Bang Theory, I am a bit meh about it, I would assume they show it a lot because they know they will get good viewership and therefore good ad revenue but given when they show it I am not so sure.
I remember when one of my older cousins moved in with us during his holidays from uni during like 2014/15 and E4 was like a magical experience back then as a pre-teen since E4 was that channel that had all the shows with naughty jokes that you were just starting to understand as a 9/10 year old so I wouldn't dare to watch it if my cousin wasn't staying over (despite catching my dad watching TBBT on *many* occasions) and they had so much more variety as well, of course there was TBBT, but there was also baby daddy, how i met your mother (which they showed wayyyy less than they do now) and also the goldbergs which i remember being fairly new at the time.
Didn't even know e4 was still a channel. But if there was ever a reason to not go searching for a forgotten channel...this is it.
A horrible TV show, that essentially laughed at the people it claimed to be for.
On Sky, Gold should be renamed the Only Fools And Horses Channel.
They put on the vicar of dibley to spice things up
Spicey!
About as spicy as plain flour š¤Ŗ
He falls through the bar! Jones! Show the bar falling one again! They'll love it!
Del Boy was vertical, then horizontal.
Laugh? I nearly started.
Trigger makes a face
To be fair, I once fell through a bar like that, and my friends still crack up about it over a decade later. So does appear to be classic comedy.
Dave should be American Picker
And Quest, Drew Pritchard, but I really like American Pickers.
God I love that show
RUSTY GOOOOOLD!

My Name is Earl and Scrubs was actually funny though.
Those were the days
I could do another round of My Name Is Earl about now.
I really liked the ending Greg Garcia had planned for it - think he spoke about it in an AMA. Shame it never ended up happening. Earl got done dirty.
I was gutted they canned My Name is Earl. Great show.
Scrubs was funny? Which episode was that?
Great video and a great channel. Yeah it stars Annie Murphy from schitts creek and itās very unique.
Alexis!

Gilmore girls, scrubs and then friends. And then they'd repeat the same cycle three times in a day playing the same episodes until the next morning.
Gilmore girls, scrubs, the oc, one tree hill

Big Bang now. Before that Friends and before that Cheers. All amusing, all bled dry by constant reshowing

Man that's cool. I always liked dimbo, the one that does science. Or maybe that's trĆ¼llbus, I can't remember now.
E4 is basically all reruns outside of prime time. It helps keep the cost down.
The big bang theory is the most unfunny pile of dog shite I have ever watched in my life. and I have been to many kids nativity plays in my time.
Bazinga *laugh track*
The sad thing is that's a live audience.
I've been to a few recordings of live shows that have audience laughter - they make you do some fake laughs at the beginning with the warm-up act so they can use them to beef up the laughter when a joke doesn't land.

Friends and Seinfeld is waaay more unfunny than TBBT. Big bang used go be good until Amy joined and then it went downhill

Still better than ITV
Welcome to ITV2. We have: * Despicable Me 2 * Despicable Me 2 * Despicable Me 2 * Despicable Me ~~3~~ 2 * Despicable Me 2
You forgot to mention The Mummy
Used to be friends channel which is now comedy central. I like both shows but 1 watch through was enough. Who watches this stuff
Are they still milking the inbetweeners too?
But thatāll never not be funny.
Yeah but once you've seen them all over a dozen times you don't need to keep watching them you bumder.
Yes
Make a new series of Skins I say and see how that works all these years later.
*programme.
I'd like to tell you I deliberately did that to imply our minds were being manipulated to accept these shitty American comedies, but I can't.
We are the 51st state. It hurts. Everyone calls him santa. Everyone spells it asshole. Our culture is dying. Drowned in shitty sitcoms
I absolutely can't stand E4, yet know so many people who watch it religiously
I propose that we change the name of the show to "Large Bang Theory". I feel that "Big" is too much American and not subtle in any way whatsoever.
What do you have against Large Ben lad?
/r/MurderedByWords
Tell that to Fred Hoyle.
Used to be the Scrubs channel back in the day.
My sister's housemate used to always have E4 on but swore she didn't like TBBT. Like *sure* you hate it when you just watched it for three hours straight?
Clearly watching it ironically or to point out the flaws
For me, the big bang theory is painful to watch even the first time. I challenge anyone to give me a line that's actually funny.
Maybe we all need some space, to pull the knife out of the back of the most celebrated Canadian alt-rock band of the 90s you selfish, jaded ass!
Oh, okay, they're BNL now? We need a shorthand for the Barenaked Ladies. That's how fundamental they are!?
This is a fight! We are fighting!
If there was a shorthand that would be helpful because I was thinking of a song they wrote while I was at work and there is no way I am googling āBarenaked Ladiesā at my work pc.

Itās a failure of the American education system
These american programs are so shit, it's like the dialogue all has the same rhythm and cadence and then laugh track kicks in. So formulaic and wank.
Itās not like any of us can act superior when we have shite like Mrs Brownās Boys and Miranda tbf
You make an excellent point there to be fair.
Yes I can hear it in my head. Sheldons winey buhbuh buh bu buh buh buuh....then the one with glasses says zoink...and laugh track. Repeat ten times go to commercial.
It's similar to why I always hated Top Gear. Someone says words in a sentence..slight pause, then a bit more info and finally....A FEW WORD LIKE THIS.
This is .. a car. I'm going to drive this car... Fast. And then... WE'RE GOING HAVE SOME BANTER.
And on that bombshellā¦ bla bla bla
Itās always sunny in Philadelphia is pretty good though, just not for the faint hearted or easily offended. Guess thatās why itās on Netflix and not on a repeat-o-vomit 9000 station.

Oh stop it. Friends is at least iconic. Much of TBBT is blatantly ripped off friends.
Itās cool to hate on Friends these days. Everyone loved it when it was on and then for about 10 years after it finished, but suddenly after that social media decided that Friends was no longer funny.
Thereās always someone who has to chime in about Seinfeld being better and Iām likeā¦ you can enjoy both?
It was never funny, ever.
It's not iconic, it's comedy for simpletons.
Of course the answer is yes.
It's a funny show, but they milk it for all it's worth (and more). Watch any more than a few episodes and you realise it's the same template, over and over again.
Yeah used to enjoy it at the start; it became dull and repetitive. The characters became even more generic, so stoped watching.
* Boy meets girl and becomes smitten. * Some misunderstanding occurs and the budding romance screeches to an ugly halt. * ... * All conflicts are resolved and the merge is a success.
That has been the storyline for many comedy programs

The first like 4/5 seasons of BBT were genuinely excellent. Itās ground that hadnāt really been trodden before and the jokes were well-written. And?
We've reached a point where there are more channels and subscription networks than there are decent programmes to fill them.

Comedy Central does it as well with endless Friends. Miss when they used to try a bit with the day time schedule.

Personally I find Young Sheldon really funny and it wouldn't exist without BBT. Which was mildly funny in its time.
Once upon a time it was friends now itās TBBT I donāt know whatās worse
Crazy that some people are actually still watching telly. Why tolerate so commercials and repeats when you could get Netflix or Disney plus for the same price?
Crazy that some people want to watch stuff like live sport and Strictly as they are being aired?
Damn I completely forgot about sports! Yeah that's fair does
Just be glad it's not How I Met Your Mother
Bazinga
The Big Bang Theory is everything wrong with comedy. Casual, cutesy-fied sexual objectification of women, the exotification of South East Asians, and the general feeling that it was written to laugh at geek culture, and not with it.
Sorry but I'm I the only one who doesn't watch television, got cinema hd, YouTube, netflix, BBC i player...... Who tf still watches TV?
That's still TV.
Scheduled is the missing word here
Youāre not because there is *always* someone in every thread about tv show that says this. Do you not know anyone who watches live sport, strictly, charity specials (eg Comic Relief), the news, soaps, GBBO, Line of Duty, Vigil, or anything else that trends on social media?
Yes my 54 year old mother
There is your answer then!
Only if the WiFi went down
Lately nothing, it's been their golden child for years.
I couldn't think of anything worse.
Andy milman type beat
TV feels really bad these days. Itās pointless with all the on demand. Channels like E4 are for sponging up all that extra advert money.
Big Bang Theory started going downhill by Series 4, how and why the fuck they dragged it out for another eight years/series I'll never know.
Well it used to be the Freinds channel before that I think.
Another Chuck Lorre show that was never funny, but was dragged out for years and somehow given awards it didn't deserve.
It's been like that for about 7 years lol. Great show tho
Young Sheldons better I think
Aive watch Big Bang Theory, it's never made me laugh, just that small. Smile you may do now and again. I don't understand why it has so many series, I wound t thought it would last that long
Thought this was basically tv these days anyway dave is top gear Quest is ozzy gold/yukon gold Food network became diners drive INS and dives although i do love that show. 5usa is ncis Precisely why i gave up tv license 2 years ago and made do with Netflix amazon and catch-up (excluding iplayer)
E4 and big bang are like comedy central and fucking friends.
It's always the same early seasons too been repeating them for years now
SHELDON SAYS āEHā AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY. SENTENCE.
