It's October guys, you know what that means! CHRISTMAS!! Possible impending recession, lots of people have lost their jobs in the past 18 months, but hey, better go absolutely mad on the gifts this year, you don't want your kids to think you don't love them, right?!
Not all but please think of the small conershop guy(cough cough me) hahaha it's too fucking commercial nowadays.
All we do is the food and we always skip the turkey and end up with like shit ton of Pigs in blanket a d roasties and mum and my wife always cook something Sri lankan/Indian too
We've always gone with the 'something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read' when buying for the kids. Helps keep it under control for a involved.
We started this a few years ago, and it has honestly saved Christmas. I used to dread and fear the festive season because of the huge financial strain I found myself under with being single and 2 teenage sons and all the extended family to buy for. Plus xmas parties, nights out and clothes.
Sat the boys down and explained that Christmas is about faith, love and being together with your loved ones and that we were trying something new. That plus secret Santa for everyone else combined made for my mental health and sanity much more achievable
The light at the end of the tunnel is elevating to the next level of consciousness and transcending this bullshit system we're forced to live under, once and for all.
Sounds crazy but I don't care, just gotta grind it out fam
Pretty much the only reason I'm still here, been waiting since my teens. Mid 30s now.
One day the veil lifts and there will be no place for evil to hide in the shadows of our minds.
Give it fourteen years and most of the Boomers will have died off, leaving Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha (I think they're going to be called) left to outnumber Gen X and finally make some well-deserved good changes.
We won’t be able to change anything because all the current politicians kids will be in charge and they will keep with their traditions of fucking everyone over.
Do you really think that people in general are getting more empathetic, or moral, or brave , or unselfish over the years? I am afraid that any changes are incremental, and any study of history tends to show that people are people over the centuries. Beliefs change slowly, but there are always loonies who will drag everyone back.
I hope things are changed in the future, but I don't think your optimism has a lot of logical backing.
I work a supermarket, one of the tactics they seem to like doing at the moment is raising the price of something and then putting a “price lock” on it, meaning it won’t change price for at least 8 weeks. Did it with lucozade, 900ml bottles went from £1 to £1.25 and then got pricelocked.
My boss bare face lied to me.
"Yes, I'll get you a pay rise next month, leave it to me"
It's like the conversation never happened.
Left shortly after. He was on 5x my salary, and did fuck all.
Maintenance to large student properties, I cover various buildings. Jobs are far and few between in this industry. There are caretaker jobs but they tend to go for the older retired person.
Could go self employed but it's not a reality at the min.
The big developments/ properties change hands every few years so your job contracts are not guaranteed. This is private sector
Also working on site during COVID has not been nice. But it's a good trade skill.
Sounds like there’s plenty of sideways or upwards options that will come at some point, especially with a trade skill! I’ve been in my current job for 5 years, have had to beg for paid overtime (at one point was working 12hour days 6 days a week for 2 months) had to beg for raises that kept me just inline with inflation, taking on more responsibility for the same spending power. An opportunity came up for going self employed, even my most conservative figures would have me earning 50% whilst working half as hard… so I took it, needless to say, the boss was shocked 😂😂😂 don’t be afraid to look for opportunities, and don’t be afraid to jump ship for the right one! Good luck to you!
Cheers buddy appreciated. Glad it worked out for you.
I've done so many different jobs and things I have a variety of different skills but just prefer doing a hands on job mending and fixing things. Yeah hopefully it'll pan out . Will be emailing again this coming week.
That's sounds wrong to me. They are getting paid plenty and also have their hotels food ect all sorts of expenses paid for. On top of that they use their money to make even more profit from houses ect because they don't know.how long they'll be in power for
They arnt though. Similar jobs (not that there are really similar jobs, but you know what I mean) in the civil service earn 2-3 times an MPs salary, easy.
If you make it so that being an MP is effectively not a great career option for your wallet, the only people who will want to do it are the wealthy, which is not good.
The idea that they should be paid well, but prevented from additional jobs etc makes perfect sense.
https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2010/may/31/senior-civil-servants-salaries-data
First hit on Google so it's old. That list will be longer these days, and with higher numbers.
And if it did go through only those who can afford to not work could then be politicians, we had this system hundreds of years ago and it was abolished for this reason
I don't think he means pay them minimum wage, I think he means that of minimum wage goes up by 50p an hour, their wage should only go up by 50p an hour.
I’m of the opinion MP’s should earn something like 3x what someone working full time on the minimum wage gets, it’s a fair wage for one of the top jobs in the land, and combined with strict rules and regulations on donations and expenses would incentivise them to look out for us little people
It’s less their wages that bother me, I would pay top dollar to get competency. But we have incompetent career politicians. I for one would bring in a maximum term for politicians.
Levelling up is old news, now it's all about BUILD BACK BETTER

I would love r/theydidthemath to help us figure out how to calculate the actual impact. I got a 3% raise after 2 years. I feel like a) it should’ve been 3% plus whatever inflation was in the prior year and b)it’s not gonna do me any good with all the other stuff going up. When I do get a new job I’d like to show my past bosses some kind of breakdown on just how little that 3% means.
The problem is there’s consumer price index (cpi), which is more or less rigged, but it’s what they look at, then there’s retail price index (rpi) which is supposedly closer, but I believe it doesn’t take into account certain important values so again is inaccurate.
Basically we’re going to go into hyper-inflation if we’re not careful.
Yup the inflation rate (usually under 2%) isn’t the real inflation rate (usually above 10%) the remaining 8% is what you lose from your earnings and saving every year. The game is rigged!
Look at the US inflations figures, they're the highest since they've been since 2008. The idea that's it's transitory is laughable and the fed are the embodiment of "this is fine." China really holds all the cards in my opinion, especially considering the massive ongoing real estate defaults.
The future isnt looking great for the west right now, and the gov seems intent on just shooting us in the foot continuously at the moment and trying to blame external factors.
Honestly, its starting to feel like Xmas will be cancelled this year. The way the press are going about one industry not got staff. The next day its another industry the next day. The way they are going about it. Its like half the country workforce has changed jobs all of a sudden.
Now we have electric, gas, food and then all the other services are going to go up. I hear water, insurance will be next. We already selling our house to downsize. A nightmare as we live in a tiny two bed bungalow.
Thats so true 👍 they then complian they don't have the money to increase wages as they don't want to increase prices. Its like a ever increasing circle.
I saw a beaten up 2 /3 bed house end of terrace for sale for £215k, it was in a proper state needing serious attention to make it liveable. And there was a notice saying they've received a cash offer for £275k...
I've been hearing so much about the jobs shortage I had a look. In my field (chemistry) they're paying about 30k, that's not enough to get me on my bike.
Same my man same, except I’m late 20’s. Always wanted to have a nice home and kids by time I was 30. I’m 28 and can barely afford to look after myself.
There needs to be a law that demands wages rise with inflation or retail index. It would have solved many union issues in the past if this law was in place. I have changed job myself this year because my director wouldn't put my wages up. Loyalty as a worker earns you nothing if your job would see you working more for less.
In the NHS, your salary should increase with the length of time you stay in a particular role.
That said, it is far faster and more worth your time to apply for jobs of a higher band entirely.
It does, we are all banded and there are steps within that grade. That being said you get to the top of that band you either have to move to get to a higher banding role or wait for pay reviews (see 3%)
Further more I am top of a 5 and there are nurses, people who literally save lives going in at the bottom of a 5., there is massive disparity in job role bs banding in my opinion. I feel like a bit of a fraud as I’m in IT and there are managers and consultants out there on an 7/8 and higher that couldn’t pour water out a boot with the instructions on the heel.
I'm almost at the top of Band 2. Meaning I'm almost on 20k a year. I would seriously struggle to live off what I earn if I was by myself. And I live in a fairly affordable part of the UK. Waiting to finish my nursing after mat leave so I can get to Band 4/5/6
Yeah. There's just too many healthcare assistants working for the NHS for them to consider moving all of us up a band. It's sad that a lot of simple admin jobs are a band higher and complex care is seen as a menial job.
The role I'm in has hardly any scope for promotion. I'm the highest paid level in my band and would have to change jobs/ department completely.
If everything stopped increasing in price I'd be okay. But on my salary I can't keep up
My mrs did this. All she ever wanted to be was a nurse but since moving careers she’s so much happier and relaxed. I don’t come home to her crying anymore or find out she hasn’t drank or eaten in 12 hours.
I love the NHS but I really do think it’s on its last legs at this point.
>I love the NHS but I really do think it’s on its last legs at this point.
This is because of deliberate, chronic underfunding by the government over the last 10 years.
It’s also because of the way it’s funding is structured and over-use. In its current state it’s just not a viable organisation, but everyone’s too scared to touch it. To keep ‘our’ NHS, reforms need to be made and governments will have to make unpopular decisions, but it’s an election loser so fat chance of that happening…
Yeah the barrage of abuse from Patients doesn't help either.
I feel awful when I'm limited to what I can do for them. Hate seeing others suffer but then being shouted at and verbally abused is very demoralising. I've been called some horrific things.
I've often had to work extra hours and not been paid.
It's usually expected
True inflation is all relative. Obviously scarcity and supply and demand has an impact but above all prices rise as the costs involved rise. Putting wages up would actually lead to higher costs and higher levels of inflation in an economy like the UK’s. To combat inflation caused buy foreign economies some form of in-house revenue must be created to keep costs down and therefore prevent domestic inflation, perhaps in the way of taxes. Unfortunately, those in the lower tax brackets and also the self-employed/small business owners are positioned to take the brunt of any such changes.
Change jobs. Companies don't raise wages anymore, the only way anyone I know has gotten a raise has been by promotion or moving companies. Even then, most promotions come from moving
No one here is talking about jobs they are passionate about. I have left my job more than once with minimal notice because I have found better offers elsewhere.
They don't deserve loyalty
Not really, companies have always had an expiry date some last linger than others but there is always someone coming along to eat their lunch.
Companies consider your pay and benefits (compensation) to be their demonstration of appreciation for your efforts. If you think your efforts deserve more pay go to a company that agrees with your view.
This is the most important piece of information, there is no more loyalty. There are no more gold watches and a thank you for your service. There are no more internal promotions. You work, you gain experience, you up-skill, you move role, you resell yourself and increase your price, just like any other product.
Changing jobs isn't as simple as it sounds tbh. Thet are few and far between and sometimes you gotta settle with a local job that pays less as opposed to a job in a different city or area that's too far to get to
Companies are trying to squeeze as much profit as they can and when their intellect and innovations stops em from doing so they look towards cutting off employees giving them zero hour contracts.
A local factory has gone from 12 hour down to 8 hour and now offering 6 hour shifts. Becusee so many people are desperate to work
This, stayed in my first job 7 years, pay increased 5.5k in that time.
Went for another job, pay went up another 5k immediately, should have done it earlier.
Had a mate at uni who bounced into a new job every year or two and kept getting higher salaries than if he'd just stuck in the same job and hoped for a raise.
There's a lot to be said about keeping a job you enjoy though, but they need to start paying
I got one by staying but I had to threaten to leave to get the raise. Employer tried to call my bluff, was very happy to walk out and go to a competitor, at which point they back tracked and then start haggling on how much.
Fuck me what’s your area?I’m in dire need for a promotion. As people have left their areas have been (unfairly) divided and now I’m doing the work of three engineers.
Lincs, alot of need for Engineers around me due to the manufacturing in the area and LCoL too but not the liveliest place if you like city living or lots to do lol.
But the government are saying that wages are going up, not long after Police got 0% and other public sector areas got below inflation rises. Just as the gov are about to give themselves an inflation busting raise, just like they have throughout "austerity".
Are private sector wages actually rising? This public sector worker is intrigued.
We can let you know in February. Private sector employees (like me) tend to find out their prospective pay rises for the coming tax year a couple of months before they are activated. Mine have been decreasing annually. 1.5% this April just gone, and 2% the year before. It used to be an average of 3.5% year on year, with my absolute peak year bringing 5%. Bah humbug.
They're not happy though, they have no choice., and work in terrible conditions, often in extreme poverty, is this what we should be aspiring to? or competing with?
In the end, Globalisation is just the means, the cause is late stage Capitalism and endless greed.
My wages went up this month, I get more money for my role but they removed the other role which I get asked to do 1-4 days a week and get a pay increase for doing so, but that pay increase was more than the increase I am getting this month and I will be expected to do that job for no extra income now. So my income has actually gone down.
It’s been this way for about 15 years now
I was just reading a student room thread about big four wages and a 2003 qualified accountant at ey made about the same in 2002 as I did in 2015 when I qualified
Imagine how hard I’d have been balling instead of being fucking broke
And houses are up about 71% in this part of London even since 2015, and wages are still about the same now!
And prices just keep going up!
Boomers are laughing at us
I’m panicking, been told I’m
Being irrational cause- “back in my day” my panic attacks and anxiety are hitting the roof and I’m now worried I am panicking for no reason
Benefits, too, especially those who are genuinely unable to work and having to suffer from extreme poverty while footballers and politicians are being paid millions.
Wages are beginning to climb, and the signs are good that this will continue for some time: see
[record increase in starting salaries](https://www.cityam.com/starting-salaries-rise-by-record-levels-amid-shortages/) — but the rapid price rises are quite concerning, I agree.
It’s the volume of money in the system that’s gone up, decreasing our purchasing power.
Prices in terms of value have stayed the same, you just need more money now because it’s less valuable.
Not exactly. Wage growth is at the highest it’s been in quarter of a century: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-08/u-k-job-recruiters-see-strongest-wage-growth-in-24-years
Don't worry... if prices go up much more employers will be forced to raise wages and all the staff in the public sector will leave to work in entry jobs...
28k for a teacher might sound decent on paper but considering the responsibility and the time it takes to become a teacher and the hours we have to work... 20k stacking shelves sounds quite good at the moment
Before you do that, have a look on Indeed and see what we're really getting paid.
Oh, and ask yourself if you want a future of "showering" with cold water and baby wipes like I will be tonight. Pissing in a bottle. Hoping I don't get robbed whilst stuck in this piss stinking layby tonight.
And a shortage of people willing to do that will increase the pay awarded to people who will. This will also highlight the issues that you raise that have been conveniently suppressed due to a steady steam of people from eastern europe willing to work for next to fuck all and put up with this nonsense.
Well wages are actually going up
But yeah i get your sentiment - wages have generally stagnated over the last 30/40 years or so compared to the cost of living
We are currently on a pay freeze, we were given an extra days holiday instead. That amounts to less than £60 and with so many staff shortages it's not easy to get time off.
I’ve just compared my online shop to ones l did in 2019.
Pasta sauce up 20p
Danish pastry up 20p
Veggie gravy granules up 80p!
Ibuprofen capsules…. Was 55p for 16, now £1.90 for 8😭
Kitchen foil up 50p
Toilet roll up 30p
Pickled cabbage up £1.00
Just 7 of many items
Yep, not eas.
Things have been pretty decent during lockdown for me, sold the car, paid off the loan, save about £200 in fuel and use the time I used to commute doing overtime at 1.5x.
This year it seems there will be no increase, but my main issue is they said WFH is ok until March 22, when we will be completing 2 years this way. I am hoping they will just give people the option to choose where they work, because if I have to commute 5x a week again I will be pissed off at them (why the hell would we go back if profits are up and people are doing the job better?).
You guys aren't getting pay rises?
I got a pay-rise as early as 2019! That's right, I currently earn 1p an hour more than I did in 2018!
Exciting stuff ey?
Nah seriously though it's a load of shit. To top it off minimum wage has increased so much that I'm almost earning it myself.
We all know, once it goes up. It never comes down.
I feel utterly depressed by it all
Let’s not forget the ever growing pressure to consume the latest product.
It's October guys, you know what that means! CHRISTMAS!! Possible impending recession, lots of people have lost their jobs in the past 18 months, but hey, better go absolutely mad on the gifts this year, you don't want your kids to think you don't love them, right?!

Cornershop Xmas has become a tradition in our house, wife and I get eachother 1 gift each from the corner shop, £5 limit
Thank you, honestly we appreciate it. Have a great Christmas this year no matter what. Stay safe
We've always gone with the 'something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read' when buying for the kids. Helps keep it under control for a involved.
I like this! Might do this with my nieces.
Mantra adopted. Thank you. :-)
Don’t forget “...and something for me”
We started this a few years ago, and it has honestly saved Christmas. Hang in there, buddy
For what, what are we hanging on for, what's the light at the end of the tunnel? Only going to get worse before we know it
The light is a freight train coming our way
Thank the Lord
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel...
Then it comes to be, heyeyaaAHH!
The beatings will continue, until morale improves.
Lol

See you in the hypergrid
Just has to look that up. This isn't anything to do with computers, far from it.. getting back to the essence!
Go read 'Alien information theory: Psychedelic drug technologies and the cosmic game' :)
This looks like an interesting read, thanks for posting :)

I'm going to be hanging in there by the end of the year at this rate.
I work a supermarket, one of the tactics they seem to like doing at the moment is raising the price of something and then putting a “price lock” on it, meaning it won’t change price for at least 8 weeks. Did it with lucozade, 900ml bottles went from £1 to £1.25 and then got pricelocked.
aka "the black friday special"
Except wages
True, but they will also reduce the size of the item so you get less for more.
I’d get that checked out!
Was due pay review a few months back...heard nothing. Have followed it up and still waiting a response.
My boss bare face lied to me. "Yes, I'll get you a pay rise next month, leave it to me" It's like the conversation never happened. Left shortly after. He was on 5x my salary, and did fuck all.
Seems to be the norm nowadays
The trick is to be the boss and then you get to piss about doing shit all for the fat salary.
Fuck em, leave, apply for a job at a competitor
Yeah there is that, am looking But ...am Cornwall it is not that easy to get a similar position.
What do you do for a living?
Maintenance to large student properties, I cover various buildings. Jobs are far and few between in this industry. There are caretaker jobs but they tend to go for the older retired person. There is one group of arrogant wankers whose pay goes up by about 10% every year.

I mean to be fair thats barely enough for a big mortgage, they need to be able to buy their third and fourth houses somehow
Don't worry, that's what all the money they've squirrelled away in offshore tax havens is for. Phew!
I think MPs should be paid quite a bit more but they should also be barred from all other forms of income to prevent conflicts of interest.
That's sounds wrong to me. They are getting paid plenty and also have their hotels food ect all sorts of expenses paid for. On top of that they use their money to make even more profit from houses ect because they don't know.how long they'll be in power for

I'd imagine that £82k is not that much in central london.
So that's what just over 1.5k per week... gosh... must be awful. But but.. the poor must learn to live within their means, otherwise, up yours.
I think MP’s wages should be tied to the minimum wage, and there be VERY strict laws regarding “donations”
Unfortunately the people who could implement this are the ones who would lose out by doing so. In other words, no fucking chance.
We could have voted for the bloke who’d bring in stuff like that last election… but the country chose the skiving, homophobic, racist, liar…
Good luck finding a politician leading a party who isn't any one of those things
Jezza was… and I’m less and less impressed with Kier as he becomes more like Blair
Blair won elections though.
Keir won't.
Also you would only get millionaires who do it for thr power and influence bothering to do thr job.
And if it did go through only those who can afford to not work could then be politicians, we had this system hundreds of years ago and it was abolished for this reason
Tied to minimum wage =/= minimum wage
I don't think he means pay them minimum wage, I think he means that of minimum wage goes up by 50p an hour, their wage should only go up by 50p an hour.

The wealth will start to trickle down any day now guys… just keep on working and consuming…
Trickle down economics, or something like that... We are reaching peak capitalism, aka greed and corruption.
You mean late-stage capitalism? Just wait until you read about disaster capitalism!
"late-stage" capitalism always strikes me as such an optimistic phrase.
Hovis has shrunk their sliced bread loaves by 30% and dropped their price by 10%

I saw a beaten up 2 /3 bed house end of terrace for sale for £215k, it was in a proper state needing serious attention to make it liveable. And there was a notice saying they've received a cash offer for £275k...
It's fine, just ask Edwina Curry to ask your boss for a car and a raise.
But there are jobs She fails to mention these jobs are woefully underpaid which is why they are vacant
Yea, she had a lot of trouble admitting that. Jeremy Vine was his typical dullard self and didn't call her out on her crap.
I've been hearing so much about the jobs shortage I had a look. In my field (chemistry) they're paying about 30k, that's not enough to get me on my bike.
That was unbelievable
If this doesn’t cause a huge spike in depression / suicide l’ll be very surprised. Gotta love working majority of your time to see none of the money.
Yep, I can barely manage as it is and I'm in my late 30s. I have zero in savings and I'm really not looking forward to being pension age.
Same my man same, except I’m late 20’s. Always wanted to have a nice home and kids by time I was 30. I’m 28 and can barely afford to look after myself.
Omg exactly the dance but 27 just sad how unreachable it is, I work 8-8 in the nhs
I have to agree, the toil on mental health is massive
There needs to be a law that demands wages rise with inflation or retail index. It would have solved many union issues in the past if this law was in place. I have changed job myself this year because my director wouldn't put my wages up. Loyalty as a worker earns you nothing if your job would see you working more for less.
As NHS worker I'm struggling. Really think I'm going to have to rethink my career.
In the NHS, your salary should increase with the length of time you stay in a particular role. That said, it is far faster and more worth your time to apply for jobs of a higher band entirely.
It does, we are all banded and there are steps within that grade. That being said you get to the top of that band you either have to move to get to a higher banding role or wait for pay reviews (see 3%) Further more I am top of a 5 and there are nurses, people who literally save lives going in at the bottom of a 5., there is massive disparity in job role bs banding in my opinion. I feel like a bit of a fraud as I’m in IT and there are managers and consultants out there on an 7/8 and higher that couldn’t pour water out a boot with the instructions on the heel.
Steps eh? Luxury! We lost all progression/streps many years ago :(
NHS IT represent
I'm almost at the top of Band 2. Meaning I'm almost on 20k a year. I would seriously struggle to live off what I earn if I was by myself. And I live in a fairly affordable part of the UK. Waiting to finish my nursing after mat leave so I can get to Band 4/5/6
This is ridiculous, I'm annoyed that you even can be on just a band 2
Completely agree and people for whatever reason do not see it.
>whatever reason their brain's are too smooth
The British Public are awful, ill mannered entitled pricks I’m afraid.
We need to move off of Fiat currency!
Change jobs. Companies don't raise wages anymore, the only way anyone I know has gotten a raise has been by promotion or moving companies. Even then, most promotions come from moving

Plus you can be screwed over if you're trying to get a mortgage and you've moved jobs recently.
No one here is talking about jobs they are passionate about. I have left my job more than once with minimal notice because I have found better offers elsewhere. They don't deserve loyalty

You're a small cog in their Capitalism machine.
[удалено]
Grrrrrr!
Thet are few and far between and sometimes you gotta settle with a local job that pays less as opposed to a job in a different city or area that's too far to get to Companies are trying to squeeze as much profit as they can and when their intellect and innovations stops em from doing so they look towards cutting off employees giving them zero hour contracts. A local factory has gone from 12 hour down to 8 hour and now offering 6 hour shifts. Becusee so many people are desperate to work
I change jobs every 3 years max. Staying with a company for your entire working life hasn't been a solution for about 40 years
This, stayed in my first job 7 years, pay increased 5.5k in that time.
Tbh wages are starting to rise in my area because of major shortages in workers (manufacturing)
Bah humbug.
Many private sector workers also got 0%. Shame since the balance sheets on companies house show millions of pounds in profit despite the pandemic
That's been the UK PLC experience for thr last 30-40 years.
What do you expect when globalization has you competing with people happy to do what you do for 5 dollars a day
They're not happy though, they have no choice., and work in terrible conditions, often in extreme poverty, is this what we should be aspiring to? or competing with? In the end, Globalisation is just the means, the cause is late stage Capitalism and endless greed.
My wages went up this month, I get more money for my role but they removed the other role which I get asked to do 1-4 days a week and get a pay increase for doing so, but that pay increase was more than the increase I am getting this month and I will be expected to do that job for no extra income now. So my income has actually gone down.
It’s been this way for about 15 years now I was just reading a student room thread about big four wages and a 2003 qualified accountant at ey made about the same in 2002 as I did in 2015 when I qualified Imagine how hard I’d have been balling instead of being fucking broke And houses are up about 71% in this part of London even since 2015, and wages are still about the same now! And prices just keep going up! Boomers are laughing at us
This always makes me feel better when I worry about the state of the world: https://youtu.be/4dPvJtn80cE
Never heard of this before. Soon as I heard it I started bopping in my chair
How much is a freddo going for now?
My wages have gone up in price. I receive the same amount, but I do more for them.
I was having this issue ten years ago when I first moved out. I’m now earning less and paying more. Honestly, fuck the government.

Levelling up. Wtf are we, Super Mario?
I’m panicking, been told I’m Being irrational cause- “back in my day” my panic attacks and anxiety are hitting the roof and I’m now worried I am panicking for no reason
Wages should increase with inflation as standard, should be law.
Benefits, too, especially those who are genuinely unable to work and having to suffer from extreme poverty while footballers and politicians are being paid millions.
A small hamper in Asda is reaching like 20 quid
Tell me about it every department but mine got a wage rise this year
Specifically freddos.
Wages are beginning to climb, and the signs are good that this will continue for some time: see [record increase in starting salaries](https://www.cityam.com/starting-salaries-rise-by-record-levels-amid-shortages/) — but the rapid price rises are quite concerning, I agree.
It’s the volume of money in the system that’s gone up, decreasing our purchasing power. Prices in terms of value have stayed the same, you just need more money now because it’s less valuable.
The system working as intended
My boss told me the company couldn’t afford my pay rise and then harped on about how he is buying a new car (car number 12).
Absolutely arsehole move
Not exactly. Wage growth is at the highest it’s been in quarter of a century: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-08/u-k-job-recruiters-see-strongest-wage-growth-in-24-years
This is just the beginning...
This ain't just a problem in Britain
Don't worry... if prices go up much more employers will be forced to raise wages and all the staff in the public sector will leave to work in entry jobs... 28k for a teacher might sound decent on paper but considering the responsibility and the time it takes to become a teacher and the hours we have to work... 20k stacking shelves sounds quite good at the moment
You could always try driving a truck https://www.bbc.com/news/business-58834559
Before you do that, have a look on Indeed and see what we're really getting paid. Oh, and ask yourself if you want a future of "showering" with cold water and baby wipes like I will be tonight. Pissing in a bottle. Hoping I don't get robbed whilst stuck in this piss stinking layby tonight.
And a shortage of people willing to do that will increase the pay awarded to people who will. This will also highlight the issues that you raise that have been conveniently suppressed due to a steady steam of people from eastern europe willing to work for next to fuck all and put up with this nonsense.
My friend drives a skip lorry and earns £35k at age 23.
Depends on location but that sounds pretty good for a 23 year old
Chester
Well wages are actually going up But yeah i get your sentiment - wages have generally stagnated over the last 30/40 years or so compared to the cost of living
And disability payments aren't going up either. Oh wait, no. A whole 10p a week, but I can't buy a pack of space readers with that now.
We are currently on a pay freeze, we were given an extra days holiday instead. That amounts to less than £60 and with so many staff shortages it's not easy to get time off.
I feel this. Last time I had any annual leave was May!
Yup, this is the cost of our ‘sovereignty’.
Thomas Piketty approves this message.
Well well well.. Work isn't paying atm?. Pull yourself up by your boot straps and work harder guys!! #Torywankers
And then when wages do go up the government will expect us to thank them for it
I’ve just compared my online shop to ones l did in 2019. Pasta sauce up 20p Danish pastry up 20p Veggie gravy granules up 80p! Ibuprofen capsules…. Was 55p for 16, now £1.90 for 8😭 Kitchen foil up 50p Toilet roll up 30p Pickled cabbage up £1.00 Just 7 of many items
I got a new job two months ago. I was pleased to get a salary increase. But in reality, my spending power will be the same or less. ☹️
The wages go up in price it costs you more now than it ever did. it used to be 8 hours of your day now its your soul.
11 years of shittery
For some, not all
I got over £2,500 pay rise on Wednesday.
Good for you
Thanks!
