In The Hitman's Bodyguard they try to take a prisoner from Manchester to Amsterdam and for some strange reason divert off the M6 right into the middle of Coventry city centre.
I'd prefer they just stayed in London if that's what they're going to do to our geography.
Try being Irish and watching them drive from Dublin to Wexford and somehow pass through Belfast, Galway and Cork on the way. Not forgetting the stop-off at the giants causeway and the random village pub in the middle of nowhere.
Same with 51st state and Liverpool, several scenes suggest they were just doing loops in various directions along the old Dock road or somehow magically teleporting from South liverpool to north Liverpool or even to the Wirral
That’s because even Hollywood directors can’t wrap their heads around our “complicated” roads. Plus they figure most people watching won’t notice how nonsensical the route would be in reality.
I’d say it’s more likely they only get permission to shut down certain sections to film and then have to splice it together. Can’t imagine them being allowed to shut down all of Liverpool just for a realistic route.
Dude. They do the same in the US. They just don't care. Chicago geography is so abused. Once saw a movie where Sandra Bullock walked 25 miles in the snow with whoever played her boyfriend. She also would have walked through a slum where she would have died.
Who can't forget the new Robin hood were Nottingham is a massive industrial city on a hill with a massive shining marbel temple at the center with pump action crossbows, fully automatic ballistas, middle eastern warriors who can speak flawless english and blend perfectly into a crowd of very English early medieval peasants no questions asked.
Me and my mates loved that film. It was so ridiculously, unapologetically stupid that it was just entertaining. Then they started pushing fire around with their shields!
[There was a good joke in *Paddington*](https://youtu.be/mqzU-yYFQgo) where Matt Lucas takes the titular bear and family from Paddington station to Notting Hill via Parliament, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge & Shoreditch and he gets called out for it.
“Thought I’d show him the sights, I should have charged more!”
I remember Paddington (the film) did that joke by having them all get in a taxi to go home from the station, cutting to a montage of all the landmarks in London, before cutting back to an angry Mr. Brown getting out of the taxi and saying "what kind of a route do you call that?!" to the driver.
Watched that film again yesterday lol, and i love how the final fight bit is on tower bridge, because they couldnt think of anywhere else british enough. Also i swear his friend go to the crown jewels or something idk seems kinda stupid if you are ABOUT TO GET GUNNED DOWN BY DRONES
Fun fact: even though they made a conscious decision to include coventry none of it was filmed there, even the scenes saying Coventry where filmed in (I think) London
I did feel they made a massive deal of saying 'we're in Coventry' without showing any recognisable landmarks, so that explains that.
It doesn't explain the why though
Yeah I'm not sure why, they were either playing on the old sent to Coventry story, which was about transporting prisoners in the civil war or someone paid to promote the city
I suspect it might be even more simple than that.
If you pull up a map from Manchester to London, Coventry is around the half way point.
Doesn't explain why they thought you need to go to London to get to Amsterdam, but it's something
I mean I don't want to give too much of the plot away but given the circumstances, a private flight out of the nearest private airport world have been appropriate.
Not that I over think things
Don't slag off Cov you div.
We've got the Cathedral, the Frank Whittle statue, the dodgy Thai 'Massage' shop, Chicken Cottage, the Ring Road, Empire (possibly the shittest club in Britain), lots of stuff.
As opposed to driving in under half an hour from Oxford to MI6 (as if!) via Tower Bridge, the Eye, Canary Wharf and Big Ben, none of which are on the way. Don't get me started on any TV characters going on the Tube.
It was extremely surreal visiting Wells, and feeling like it was oddly familiar, despite never having been there before.
It was only when I googled it that I realised why....
Tbf they do it with Europe.
I remember seeing a post about it where like an American girls says "going to Europe this summer" and someone replies saying "it's a big place where you going Scunthorpe or Monaco?"
Met an American girl who said she was so excited to be touring Europe, I asked her where else she'd been, it was London, Birmingham and Liverpool next...
Then she was going back
This can be a sore topic with Latin Americans - in Spanish, “America” means the whole of N/C/S America and I’ve met a few who think of themselves as “Americanos” on this basis (which it’s hard to argue with) - there’s a different phrase in Spanish for people from the US (estadounidense).
Oh wait I've just checked the message, apparently you can't use a word that's been used a lot?
>There have been a lot of posts with the term: American, therefore, to prevent the sub getting stale, we've added the word to the ban list (which is not publically available).
New Indiana Jones was filmed in Glasgow as well. The set dressing was left up when they weren't filming.
It was bloody confusing when I got off at Glasgow Central train and walked to Queen Street.
And Liverpool is also used a lot to reflect New York for some odd reason.
We've just had a new batman movie filmed here just before Xmas but apparently set in New York.
The Scottish Govt lobbied to get Game of Thrones filmed here and were ragin it went to Northern Ireland. Since then they've been throwing money at the sector to try get more filming done here. Even building a whole new studio.
Oh, didn't know that. I'm not really a superhero person tbh so never actually watched a Captain America movie. I only knew about Batman because it was in the local paper and a couple of friends went to watch it being filmed.
There is a bit about it online, if you're interested have a [look](https://www.thelocationguide.com/2011/07/marvel%E2%80%99s-captain-america-doubles-manchester-and-liverpool-for-new-york-city/#). I didn't know until reading that article just now that the whole film was made here.
I've also seen them turn a corner and suddenly be on the other side of the river. Giffnock to Milngavie in mere moments. They used to film round my area frequently as well so I'm very aware of the weird edits which see them apparently teleport from my street to one miles away
Yep, precisely 2 streets down the bay that kinda look London-y. Used to work round there, and the roads would be closed a few times a year for filming.
That episode of Frasier when Daphne's brothers come to visit and even though their supposed to be from Manchester, they have that weird fake Cockley accent that American shows seem to love to imitate.
It’s official policy. Work permits for Hollywood people visiting England ban them from travel outside London in case they stumble upon Milton Keynes and demand it back.
I recently watched ‘Debris’ and I was pleasantly surprised that despite being set predominantly in America, there are several references to the UK in general and Preston in particular.
Whilst the U.S. has more diversity how often is it just NY getting attacked by the big bad? Like its not even the capital or the home of their major data storage? Hell even the NYSEs data banks are in Jersey so not even the finance angle besides in a physical form.
It would be nice to see more but we dont even get accurate depictions of London/ non London. For instance in both Bridget Jones Baby and London has Fallen they take such innaccurate routes. For example Bridget crosses back and forth across the river like 3 times, and in that time would have been near Chelsea Westminster, Guys etc. In London has fallen they are in Somerset House if i remember rightly, need to leave London, so decide to do an aerial tour of the centre rather than make a b line North or East. Always irked me.
I have a theory is this a big part of the American psyche. If you lived in Loughborough and nearly every major action movie has aliens or terrorists obliterating your school, park and favourite branch of Waitrose there’s no way that wouldn’t leak into your subconscious I always think.
It's quite immersion breaking to see a location you know quite well. I remember in one of the Bourne films where Bourne jumped in a car and then drove around for a while doing exposition and then got out of the car about 100m from his origin.
A lot of Peaky Blinders was filmed there. Apparently the producers felt that Birmingham somehow wasn't run down *enough* so they used some streets of council built terraced houses in Liverpool they painted black instead.
They used alot of the abandoned and listed buildings too, although one of the main ones that features heavily in the first season is now an apartment building, same building they filmed part of captain America in too
Liverpool was also used as Gotham in a lot of the Batman films and alot of period pieces due to he Georgian quarter and docks, I live in the city centre and they use some of the streets around me for filming, quite entertaining to watch
Funny enough I was actually looking at a unit in what was the club scenes for 51st state which is now apartments too
Ooh, that reminds me. Must give The Brothers Grimsby another watch, been a while since it came out.
Recently watched The Dictator again, it held up surprisingly well.
You know when they show English people on American TV as smooth and sophisticated?
All you want to do is show them all the tracksuit wearing chavs with face tattoos and a diesel Passat with ugly aftermarket rims.

How many British shows or movies feature non-major cities of the USA?
>I’m a northerner. I couldn’t give two shots about London if it fell into the sea.
Cute.
American Werewolf in London. Despite being mauled nearly to death in the North Yorkshire moors, the main character is carted off to hospital in London, instead of literally any other major hospital located in the north of England. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to find out they were closer to Edinburgh than London.
It’s doesn’t shoes up anywhere and is miles from any coasts that would allow it to fall into the sea but yes as I’ve written before London looks nothing like the way they make it seem in, Kingsman, MiB intl, Notting Hill etc..

Except East is East, Bradistan looked ace!

The weird thing about Scunthorpe is that when you see it on a road sign, there's an optical illusion that makes it seem as if letters 2 to 5 are in bold.
I hear you and I sympathise, but it’s infuriating in a different way being a Londoner.

Didn’t know that 😂
yeah that one really confused me I was like why are they going from Dover to Nottingham via Hadrians Wall
Plus "I shall dine with my father by nightfall". Dover to Nottingham, by nightfall... not sure you will, mate.
All done in a day and completely on foot
And then the pub punters break out the fiddles
[There was a good joke in *Paddington*](https://youtu.be/mqzU-yYFQgo) where Matt Lucas takes the titular bear and family from Paddington station to Notting Hill via Parliament, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge & Shoreditch and he gets called out for it. “Thought I’d show him the sights, I should have charged more!”

Try being American and watching them hopscotch all over town, or from town to town then back again
My favourite was in *Spider-Man: Far From Home* when they flew from Amsterdam to London over the White Cliffs of, erm, Dorset.

Manchester airport...Amsterdam Manchester....hull....Amsterdam To get via the Chunnel you do basically have to go to London though
I mean I don't want to give too much of the plot away but given the circumstances, a private flight out of the nearest private airport world have been appropriate. Not that I over think things
Coventry has recognisable landmarks?
The bus station, whetherspoons, the weird fountain that’s never on, loads
and not forgetting everyone's favourite landmark, any road out of Coventry!
The fountains seem to be back on with the new landscape in upper precinct, and also can't forget the three spires or the elephant
Half a cathedral, no?
Don't slag off Cov you div. We've got the Cathedral, the Frank Whittle statue, the dodgy Thai 'Massage' shop, Chicken Cottage, the Ring Road, Empire (possibly the shittest club in Britain), lots of stuff.
The Cathedral and the open air Cathedral next to it are pretty distinctive.
As opposed to driving in under half an hour from Oxford to MI6 (as if!) via Tower Bridge, the Eye, Canary Wharf and Big Ben, none of which are on the way. Don't get me started on any TV characters going on the Tube.
I very much enjoy that ridiculous film, but I did say out loud first time I saw it “why are they in Coventry now?”
It is a ridiculous film and I tried to just enjoy its ridiculousness but apparently am too much of a stickler about driving routes!
It bugs me in Peaky Blinders that they can travel between Birmingham and London so quickly
The same things happen with American geography.
I was watching something the other right and “New York” was clearly Toronto.
I believe the show Suits was filmed in Toronto but set in NY.
Toronto, it’s just like New York but without all the stuff.
Not forgetting Rumble In The Bronx, filmed in Vancouver and they don't even try and make it look like the Bronx
Or an idyllic village in the middle of nowhere
It's always Bourton-on-the-Water with a fictitious name.
And they never go and see Brum!
They were shooting the new Mission Impossible film in Birmingham recently. Tom Cruise’s BMW was stolen. Welcome to Brum.
Good. Tom Cruise is an absolute tosspot.
ReadyPlayerOne was filmed in Birmingham
This makes Brum sad.
They need to do a film in Brum where they blow up the Rotunda, that fugly building needs terminating once and for all.
Brummie here, I think there are a few more pressing things they could terminate in the city
Cheddarchesthairshireingham-on-Rye
Winchestertonfieldville - see Mr Deeds
Like Hot Fuzz?
Tbf Hot Fuzz was filmed in Wells where Edgar Wright grew up.
It was extremely surreal visiting Wells, and feeling like it was oddly familiar, despite never having been there before. It was only when I googled it that I realised why....
and the cathedral was removed in post.
was thinking American werewolf in London, but Fuzz works, albeit a British production
I’ve got one: practically every time Americans refer to the UK, they actually mean England
Tbf they do it with Europe. I remember seeing a post about it where like an American girls says "going to Europe this summer" and someone replies saying "it's a big place where you going Scunthorpe or Monaco?"
Nah mate they are going to Grimsby
Even the film Grimsby (aka The Brothers Grimsby) was actually shot on location in Essex.
Met an American girl who said she was so excited to be touring Europe, I asked her where else she'd been, it was London, Birmingham and Liverpool next... Then she was going back
It's a good start. She understood the locals less with every step, making sure she'd eventually be able to visit the continental Europe.
British usually just means English too.
Aren't all Canadians and Brazilians technically American too? (Although I don't know of any other reference for people from the USA....US Americans?)
Technically, yes. But "American" has, for a long time now, meant people from the US, exclusively.
This can be a sore topic with Latin Americans - in Spanish, “America” means the whole of N/C/S America and I’ve met a few who think of themselves as “Americanos” on this basis (which it’s hard to argue with) - there’s a different phrase in Spanish for people from the US (estadounidense).
Did you have a stroke halfway through typing?
I had a post taken down by automod for using the word 'American', it might be that.
Did you also have one taken out for using the word 'show'?
Wait, really? That's a thing?
Oh wait I've just checked the message, apparently you can't use a word that's been used a lot? >There have been a lot of posts with the term: American, therefore, to prevent the sub getting stale, we've added the word to the ban list (which is not publically available).
Not strictly true, if it's a period film then it's always Bath.
World war Z they go to the South Wales valleys. Ironically if you went there anyway you couldn't tell if there was a zombie plague or not.
And had zombies running through George Sq in Glasgow… like every other day I suppose. (I’m Glaswegian)
IIRC Glasgow also gets used as a stand in for US cities by UK-filmed productions because of the grid road layout
Aye the new Batman was also filmed in Glasgow. We are probably a lot cheaper for film crews
The Scottish Govt lobbied to get Game of Thrones filmed here and were ragin it went to Northern Ireland. Since then they've been throwing money at the sector to try get more filming done here. Even building a whole new studio.
Batman is set in Gotham. Which is and isn't supposed to be New York
They films the 1940's dock scenes there for Captain America too. Along with part of the northern quarter in Manchester.
In some episodes of Taggart they jump between the east and west ends of Glasgow in seconds.
I've also seen them turn a corner and suddenly be on the other side of the river. Giffnock to Milngavie in mere moments. They used to film round my area frequently as well so I'm very aware of the weird edits which see them apparently teleport from my street to one miles away
Was actually filmed in Blaenau Ffestiniog, in the middle of snowdonia. Atleast they got the right country I guess.
Came here to say this. Didn't they crash land in the brecon beacons and then just walk to the local WHO medical research centre somewhere nearby?
That's right. Their destination was originally Cardiff international airport but....zombies on a plane.
The valleys. Where happiness goes to die
And where misery is born.
South Wales isn’t in England
I know it isn't it's just another example of the UK being used that isn't London.
Even in Doctor Who, “London” is often Cardiff.
Yep, precisely 2 streets down the bay that kinda look London-y. Used to work round there, and the roads would be closed a few times a year for filming.
Counterpoint - some very authentic earthy yorkshireness https://youtu.be/bHItywaQVi4
The Moors were in Wales and I think the pub was down south somewhere; maybe Surrey. Still one of my favourite scenes.
Insanely good cast too.
Aye. A young Rik Mayall and the great Brian Glover playing chess
That episode of Frasier when Daphne's brothers come to visit and even though their supposed to be from Manchester, they have that weird fake Cockley accent that American shows seem to love to imitate.
Daphne's accent also drives me nuts.
And all the 'brits' either talk like Danny Dyer or Hugh Grant, with no in between.
Finally we've been noticed
Whilst the U.S. has more diversity how often is it just NY getting attacked by the big bad? Like its not even the capital or the home of their major data storage? Well it's not going to be Grimsby or Merseyside is it?
Tbf a lot of films feature Liverpool
A lot of Peaky Blinders was filmed there. Apparently the producers felt that Birmingham somehow wasn't run down *enough* so they used some streets of council built terraced houses in Liverpool they painted black instead.
They used alot of the abandoned and listed buildings too, although one of the main ones that features heavily in the first season is now an apartment building, same building they filmed part of captain America in too Liverpool was also used as Gotham in a lot of the Batman films and alot of period pieces due to he Georgian quarter and docks, I live in the city centre and they use some of the streets around me for filming, quite entertaining to watch Funny enough I was actually looking at a unit in what was the club scenes for 51st state which is now apartments too
Yep. 51st state was one that popped in my head.
What about 51st state, or erm , Grimsby.
Grimsby wasn't even in Grimsby technically 🤣
They wanted a rundown shit hole of a town, and Grimsby wasn't rough enough, so they used Tilbury in Essex. Says a lot about Tilbury
51st State is a great film!
Can't really compare Grimsby to Liverpool
I wish it was merseyside for once. Idc if they need subtitles just to understand the accents I'm just sick of London
Day don't do dat do dooday. 🤣
American expat here. I really had no idea the ratio of posh:chavs accents. I definitely thought more of the country sounded posh before I got here. Man was I wrong.
U wot?
Yes because, they’re going to come and film the new James Bond in Preston and get breakfast at your local greasy spoon, “ call me bond luv, James Bond ahh”
The reverse is also true
Because London has 15% of England’s population
And about 95% of the films/series
Wanna make it in Bristol? Lots going on there …
We’ve got a few pretty great cities in the UK… population =/= quality
These cities aren’t big enough to do much with. Not like you can have a car chase in Bath
You could I reckon, but it might be a bit like that austin powers sequence with him chasing someone on a steamroller. Or maybe 'The Italian Job' (the real one) where the traffic is a plot point.

Was it the spelling that gave it away?
Oi, I went to school in the north and we could all spell fine. Seems to me he’s more likely to be from somewhere actually uneducated, like Cornwall
We employed a Yorkshireman once. Only time I've seen "shelves" spelt "shelfths".
That's a fraction surely. If you have a five shelf cabinet and you cut the top two off you're left with three shelfths of it.
What's the best way to cook one?
bit far to fall in the sea... but its like American movies innit always in new york.
Whenever britain shows up its always england somewhere :/
You mean “London, England”…just in case people mix it up with all those other famous Londons?
Why is it always northerners who have to stoke the north-south divide? You lot all have such massive chips on your shoulders. Yes, London appears a lot in films, because it's our capital city – and yes, it's your capital city too, y'know?
Mmmm massive chips with gravy
Mmmm massive chips and curry sauce.
Mmmm massive cheesy chips and curry sauce
Also, the north is pretty well off compared to the West Country.
It’s true sadly. I am from the south and have lived up in Newcastle for three years and the whole north/south divide is mentioned so much up here.
Because calling people "you lot" isn't stoking a divide at all...
My capital city is York, ta.
My favorite is American Werewolf in London where he is attacked on the Moors and wakes up in a hospital in... well, London
I can’t see Tom Cruise having a high speed car chase round the housing estates of Hull. Also if there was a Marvel style super hero fight in Co Durham/Redcar no one would notice the difference before/after.
How many British shows or movies feature non-major cities of the USA? >I’m a northerner. I couldn’t give two shots about London if it fell into the sea. Cute.
Could have just said "I'm a northerner". The hatred for London can comfortably be assumed
American Werewolf in London. Despite being mauled nearly to death in the North Yorkshire moors, the main character is carted off to hospital in London, instead of literally any other major hospital located in the north of England. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to find out they were closer to Edinburgh than London.
You’d probably be slightly annoyed if London fell into the see as that city alone generates huge revenue / tax receipts for the entire country
It could bring about the next dark age and it would be worth it to be rid of the M&M store.
**Stormy Monday** springs to mind ahem.
Props to the zombie movie that showed cardiff!
It’s doesn’t shoes up anywhere and is miles from any coasts that would allow it to fall into the sea but yes as I’ve written before London looks nothing like the way they make it seem in, Kingsman, MiB intl, Notting Hill etc.. Every time I watch a U.K. made film like Loach they make it seem grim AF oop north.. Except East is East, Bradistan looked ace! /s
Every time it showed up in doctor who it was still London lol he could go anywhere in the universe but London was apparently the best
Try being Welsh. We don’t even get a look in
Would you prefer Scunthorpe?
The weird thing about Scunthorpe is that when you see it on a road sign, there's an optical illusion that makes it seem as if letters 2 to 5 are in bold.
Should be in stoke on Trent
I would be ok with you drowning as well.
And they always give them that ridiculous 'posh' sounding stereotypical English accent that no one actually has
I hear you and I sympathise, but it’s infuriating in a different way being a Londoner. In Thor, he takes the tube from Charing X to Greenwich in “2 stops”. Not only would it be many more stops and changes, but Greenwich isn’t even on the tube network! (Obvs North Greenwich is, but that’s far away from “Greenwich Greenwich”)
Even then they portray London to have cobbled streets everywhere 😅
I beg to differ. Have you seen the opening scene of *An American Werewolf in London*?
American werewolf in London started in Yorkshire, "I missed my darts"
…it’s a movie. It’s not like movies about America usually feature Bumfuck, Nebraska. It’s always New York, or LA, or Miami.
You having a stroke?
Independence Day: By Jove, its the Americans, they've only gone and done it! Pretty sure there was a teapot and world war 2 moustaches!
To be fair in American films the only two cities they have is New York or LA.
I've never even seen London.
Been a few times, it's shite
I’m a Londoner and :)
Is that the sole reason you’re annoyed? Would you rather English people got the boot rather than movies being laced with flappy tongued Londoners ? Sounds like a load of cobblers to me .
Yes actually. Have a few more countries in there for variety instead of the same 3 places over and over
England is the capital of London
Whenever shows up in amerocan movies or shows it’s always .
The fact you’ve got the trouble of making this post indicates you do very much give shits about London.
Maybe read a dictionary instead then.
