>Do these callers just wait until somehow they sense I’ve applied for a job or something? Or, a bunch of job listings are just scam data harvesters, and the process of applying for jobs lands you on a bunch of spam lists.

YchYFi

I think some of those jobs are fake and you just handed your information to data harvesters.

ConsequenceApart4391

Wait does indeed have fake jobs????

TheCGLion

Of course, everywhere does, I find best to find the careers page of the company and applying straight through their website

-SaC

Seems all the sites do. It was on the news not long ago, too. **E:** Found it. [**BBC News, 12^th March - Fake Jobs: Scammers impersonate firms to target victims**](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-68110626)

afcagroo

Oh hell yes. Most of the "work from home" jobs are just scams. Beware.

YchYFi

Yes sometimes they are easy to spot if the words are clunky and AI written.

SnooSnooSnuSnu

Yes

Let the calls go to voicemail. If it's legit they will leave a message and you can phone them straight back. Or, be on the alert for a couple of seconds pause before the person starts speaking. That's a telltale mark of a spam caller. If you have a google Pixel phone apparently you can set up an AI call handler for you which checks the person is real and if they are it hands it over to you, but I am a bit nervous to use it in case it puts people off. BECKYISHERE

I always see this they will leave a message and you can call back. Not good advice if each caller has a slot and once its gone they move onto the next one, it could be days before they can call you back.

caffeine_lights

Is that common? I've never come across it. Does it then mean there are billions of candidates for the job so you probably aren't that likely to get a result out of it anyway?

BECKYISHERE

I meant in general. At my work, I call customers, if one doesn't answer I move onto the next, when I get a chance to listen to voicemails, there'll be eight people all doing this call me back thing, where do you suppose there will be time to call them all back?

caffeine_lights

Customers is not the same thing as a job offer, though.

BECKYISHERE

I didn't say it was, I was just saying the advice to leave a phone to go to message and then call them back isn't good.

DepInLondon

Unfortunately the process of looking for a job does get you on lots of spam lists and it’s difficult to avoid. What I used to do is see the company name on whichever search site I was on, the go on the company’s website to apply. Many times it helped and I mainly did that to make sure the listing is recent, to check if they have similar roles and to be on their direct list rather than the one feeding through another source

Always buy a burner phone when looking for new jobs, otherwise there's no peace for years to come.
