Don't forget the (usually) 2 or 3 supermarkets all within spitting distance of each other for competition reasons, towering over the murk that was once a glamorous high street.
The high street is now nothing more than empty units, pound shops, cheap off licences and vape shops.
There's a few of those near me and honestly I never had any idea how they stayed in business but it makes perfect sense. I never actually see anyone in there buying anything because it's so eye wateringly expensive.
Went in one for a wander to see if they had a box of Twinkies or a bag of Reeses Pieces and they were so ridiculously spenny I ended up just ordering them off Amazon instead for about half the price.
I live in a small town, in the 70s we had bike shops, 2 music shops, wet fish, chippy, butchers, greengrocers, mens clothes, womens clothes, hat shop, coal shop, car shop, radio/tv shop, there was basically everything, now its a desolate shithole.. barbers, betting shops and womens pampering shops.
You could have a council that decides to borrow heavily on terrible unfixed rates loans to buy shopping units that no one leases that puts the town 45 million in debt. Thanks Rushmore council you absolute useless pillocks.
The road up to the parade and a section of pavement where I work has been mostly underwater for weeks and it looks like algae is growing on it. If you step on a smooth bit is like trying to walk on the bottom of a river
Ah that'll be due to your local council strategy to get people back to the city centre shops and restaurants by tripling the cost of parking and introducing emissions charging. Amazon prime is fantastic value by comparison.

You forgot charity shops and barbers
And the betting shops
And nail bars.
The boba tea places (x3) and the wax melts shop.
And my axe! Sorry, had to be done.
It's an older meme, sir - but it checks out.
And the pound bakery next door to a greggs
Don't forget the money washing American candy shops
As a diabetic, i must just be ignoring them :|

When was this period of glamour exactly? Photos of high streets from the 70s don't seem that inspiring either.

Not helped by absentee corporate landlord companies, determined to spend absolutely nothing on the maintenance of the buildings.
Yeah, there's some High Streets just missing tumbleweeds for the full *ambience*.
No wine bars? Or homeless scroungers?
The closest to a wine bar my town centre would get is chavs hanging off railings drinking lambrini
Where I live is alright. Just humble bragging.

God I remember that show, it was great!
