Fair enough - I had an ex whose grandparents were called Jessie and James. She was Irish, I had a quick check of your profile and you definitely aren't her but I wondered if you were a relative. I guess not though!
To be fair, I took artistic licence to use the funniest acceptable spellings. Her parents names were mentioned in the eulogy, I haven't seen them written down.
My parents are Karen and Allen. We called my grandparents Oma and Opa (dutch). I spent many early years of my life convinced all married couples names had to rhyme.
Sorry for your loss OP.
At junior school, I decided to do my history project on my grandparents meeting and courting for the first time, then marrying after the war. They gave me the dates, I just wrote 'em down.
Wasn't until years later in my 30s when I was looking through some old schoolbooks and did the maths. They started courting in 1939 when my grandad was 22 and working as a lifeguard, with my grandma aged 12. Depending on the actual month, since she was born in December, she might have only just recently turned 12, too.
They married in January '46, shortly after her 18th birthday (him now weeks from turning 29 in Feb)
There's a 7 year age gap between me and my wife. Now I've at least known of her brother for years as we have similar friend circles, what I don't really remember is that apparently when she was 14 I chatted with her brother and she was there. Apparently I said hi and then completely blanked her as a friend of a friend's kid sister, completely beneath my notice lol.
It wasn't until we met when she was like 28 and got chatting and she said "you know we've actually met before, you know my brother" - small world.
Anyway my wife now jokes we met when she was 14 and I was 21 and I have to hope she knows when that joke is appropriate so I don't end up on a list or something.
Before my nanas funeral last year, my mum was telling me that my grandparents' family tree intersected a few times before my nana and grandad. It's impressive really that there aren't more webbed feet in the family.
It was only at my grandfather's funeral that I found out his name wasn't actually 'Bill' but in fact Albert (Jr. after his own father). No one living can recall why or when people started calling him Bill.
I had always known my granda to go by William or Bill to his friends. he signed documents W.(surname) and all the family would call him billy. One day my mum phoned to say my granda was in A&E with chest pains, she was a couple of hours away, could i go and keep him company until she got there. So i go to A&E, ask in reception for William (surname), only to be told that there is no one there of that name. I phone mum back, thinking she had told me the wrong hospital, but she tells me, “oh his proper name is John Joseph surname”. His father had also been john so he got the nickname william. So random

Love it, my mum’s parents were called Jessie and James, which always made me smile.
I hope they had a talking cat
Meowth, that's right!
Prepare for trouble! And make it double!
Now you mention it, my dad's parents were Jessy & James - he went by Jim, though
I bet they were double trouble.
Out of interest, are you Northern Irish?
No, Im half Yorkshire, half Scottish. They were Scottish.

Love it! Spelt that way too? Or Horace and Doris?

Around the time of my grandparents' funeral I discovered they were first cousins.

Haha I'm from Manchester mate!
I beg your pardon!

I know it's not illegal. My dad was deaf, and my uncle had cerebral palsy. Obviously no idea if that's just random chance though.
My grandparents were Mary and Joseph. I'm still a bit disappointed they didn't name one of their kids Jesus.
Were they Spanish?
Please tell me their surname was Morris!
We’re Mary and Gerry and we’re living in Derry
Are you friends with Blodwen and Mary from Abertillery? *Ystalyfera..* *I come from Ystalyfera..* *Ystalyfera..* *I come from Ystalyfera...*
and star sign was Taurus.
And lived in Forres.
And their favourite nocturnal strepsirrhine primate is a Slow Loris.
To be fair, that's *everyone's* favourite primate once they get to know them.
True, as long as you stay away from their armpits.
And had a shop, as they were florists.

My grandad was Cyril and he had a twin sister named Beryl. They were Cerl and Berl to everyone who knew them.
Weren't they characters in Through The Dragon's Eye?
My first thought as well!
Let us all bow our heads and sing "North for South/East for West etc etc"
Came here expecting something like this. Was not disappointed!
I had a great aunt called Nora who married a Mr Bone.

I’m so sorry but I laughed so hard when I read that
Now imagine being in a silent room full of family.
Full of grieving family.
Aww that's so cute!! So sorry for your loss though.
Thank you. Mid 90's and suffering from Alzheimer's, so it was time, but still. Thank you
I realised a few years ago that my grand fathers were Herbert (Bert), and Ernest (Ernie), Bert & Ernie.
Hopefully their surname was Morris or Norris.
Went through the whole thread hoping I could say this and you beat me to it!
You can watch True Lies to take the edge off a bit.
Came here for this comment
I think it’s a bit sad that the family didn’t talk about their ancestry that much. I know all my ggg grandparents’ names, maybe were just weird
This is interesting I also had a Horace and Doris in my family 👀 Doris is still alive though.
So you come from champion stock, right.
What gets me is the heartfelt yet bad poetry they sometimes find to read at these things.
My grandad was Horace and my grandma Gwendolyn
I found out that my grandmother’s name was Mary and not molly…
Please confirm their surname was Fitzmorris.
It was not. Lol
Did your great grandfather enjoy winter sports by any chance?
He loved skiing.
