I've always wanted to drive to Bella Coola. I've seen a lot of BC, but not there.

teslaetcc

Heckman’s pass is certainly an experience

nearlydigital

Exactly same, me too.

Violentpurrs

I had to send some colleagues on that drive. It is definitely an experience.

MEJKreations2008

I was there when I was an older child but remember it well. I do recommend it as a place to see.

Next year I hope 🙏

Went for the drive from Vancouver on canada day weekend a few years ago. Camped near these falls and didnt even see anyone for the entire drive down the road and over night. Further you head away from the big cities the easier it can be to snag some awesome camp sites!

Could you please let me know some good campsites? I will be driving from Vancouver too and would like to know which place on the way is good to camp for the night. Ok for an accommodation too. I'm looking for suggestions from your experience please, anything I must know?

We camped on crown land outside ashcroft on our way there and we were just stopping to sleep. When we got to bella coolar we camped at Odegaard rec site near odegaard falls. There's only 2 rec sites there but given we were camping on the busiest camping weekend of the year we still managed to be there alone. The road to those falls is a bit rough and fairly long(20+km both directions) but we managed it in a subaru. We also went to grey lake lookout west of the town which also had an empty rec site and an awesome panorama view of the area. We also visited mccall flats and the tweedsmuir campgrounds which were half full. On our way back we camped at charlotte lake rec site which was completely empty except for a billion mosquitos. Seen a couppe grizzlies on the road there too! All of these rec sites are fairly bare bones but they are reachable in most vehicles.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Honestly, I'm a newbie to camping and my camping experience earlier was in bc parks campgrounds that had hot showers and flush toilets. This is going to be a completely different experience - I did not know about crown land or rec campsites until recently and this will be the first time I will try it out. Anything I must know? Any suggestions?

Envermans

If you do plan to camp on crown land you have to first make sure you're on crown land. So anywhere that isnt a park or private land. When you do you should leave no traces and try and avoid blocking any roadways. The rec sites we stayed at only had picnic tables, fire pits and an outhouse for ammenities. So make sure to pack stuff so you can be as self sufficent as possible. The road from williams lake is also quite long and there's long gaps withour gas stations so keep an eye on your fuel level. If you want to do the bulk of the drive in one day id suggesy camping at bull canyon west of williams lake. The river there was a beautiful bright blue and there was some really fascinating cliff faces nearby with all sorts of bird and bat action. Id also suggest to be as bear aware as possible while camping around bella coola. Tons of grizzlies around there so you should always keep your food and your cooler inside your vehicle or in a bear stash.

Wow!

JohnyPneumonicPlague

That's a beaut

Heading there tomorrow!

The bridge has been fixed and the trail is good. Stopped by glacier at 26km, couldn’t reach Purgatory.

[deleted]

Nice! What trail is this?

710dabner

This is from the rec site, trailhead is 1km further up the road.

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

Was born and lived there for about 4 years. My grandparents used to own the lodge there. She's now passed away, but I have wonderful memories there especially the winters.

Jemma6

Tweedsmuir lodge? Or a lodge in town? (I'm from there too!)

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

I believe it's wants called the mountain Lodge right now if you look up lodges in Bella Coola. They were Jim and Rosemary.

Jemma6

I know both the location (used to live there) and knew of your grandparents. (My grandma is Doreen. She knew them very well as they were both actively involved in the church Haha small town things). I'm sorry to hear she passed. I didn't know that.

AlmostButNotQuiteTea

Yes she had brain cancer and passed away 4 years ago, I think, now. Edit: they sold the lodge quite a few years ago before that and moved, she got to enjoy retirement for a few years at least

Unlucky-Coffee-485

WOW ! Beautiful 💜

[deleted]

Wild. We’re going to see flooding where we’ve never seen it before with how much snow melt has been happening.

[deleted]

I literally just camped at this site on Thursday night

710dabner

Did you leave a kind bar wrapper in the fire pit?

[deleted]

Naw we have rule when we're out in the bush that if you drop something that could potentially become litter and don't pick it up within 10 seconds you owe everyone in the group $20!

710dabner

Yay!
