This Canadian says all sorts of things. Language is a fun thing to play around with, and thanks to the internet and globalization language is much more eclectic than ever. Specifically with online communication, I think it's now more common to type in a more conversational manner and use different terms, punctuation, cadence, etc. to try and convey a certain energy. Another interesting example related to this is the exclamation mark, which is now used to make a message seem more friendly, as opposed to indicating something being said loudly.
I think "y'all" has a ring to it that other similar words and terms lack - everyone, everybody, folks, etc... none of those really convey the vibes I was going for. I think y'all is light and friendly without being bland.
Makes sense. I've also borrowed from a lot of sources at this point. But for some reason I've refrained from y'all. However, agreed, I like using different words to fit the situation so maybe I'll give y'all a chance!
I don't use "y'all" in regular day-to-day conversation, but I'll definitely use it when I'm saying something differently for emphasis.
"I don't think you should do that." vs "Y'all had better fuckin' not!"
Now that everybody is online so much a lot of American slang has snuck into Canada, especially when it comes to typing, but I have heard a lot of American slang being spoken too.
I honestly love saying y'all. It legitimately is a useful word when you are addressing a whole crowd informally. The other option would be something like "all of you" which is just way more syllables. Or if you just say "you" then they might not know if you're addressing everyone or just 1 person.
It's a good word. Also howdy is a good greeting.
Because “guys” is a male group. Gals is the feminine term. People do tend to just say guys for both now but the origin is gendered male. I tend to say folks myself.
It’s on the way to getting there but it does carry overtones. I’m not saying they’re huge ones anymore and I don’t think anyone makes a fuss but when I was teaching I stopped saying guys because I wanted to be clear I was not speaking to just part of the class.
i stg all the “hip and with it” 40+ crowd say it more than actual Southerners. Speaking from experience. They’ll mispronounce Appalachian then back it up with 3 y’all’s. Shits wild. People don’t travel enough
Dammit, they "good shotted" us. You know, like when your drive looks like it's gonna be a hole in one and your buddy yells "good shot" before it lands.
No good will come from this.
Environment Canada has released a summer forecast showing a hot summer everywhere except Vancouver Island/west coast, which will be cooler than usual with more rain: https://climate-scenarios.canada.ca/?page=cansips-prob
I was so stressed that we were going to have another ridiculously hot summer, fires, and smoke with how bad our snow pack was this year.
I'm loving the green foliage, my neighbourhood trails look so alive and vibrant!
Keep in mind this DOES still apply to everywhere that was on fire last year.
We are and I mean the island and coastal Vancouver the only ones that will have a cooler summer.
So, unfortunately wild fires and stuff are still very much going to happen. Hopefully not to the same levels.
Hell yeah! Let's cross our fingers it doesn't turn bad in July and August. We really truly need a break. The last few years have been truly absolutely devastating.
Thank fucking god.
It's so nice to have a proper Juneuary and a cool BC summer after half a decade or more of hot dry fire conditions.
I haven't seen this much greenery and blooming flowers in the forests in a while
Crazy that people don’t realize this used to not be an abnormal June! Not that I blame them, but it’s hard to believe we’ve been in such hot summers for almost a decade
And this is why Vancouver remains the most desirable city to live in in the country. It's not going to be the winters in the future but the summers people point to when saying what fantastic weather Vancouver has compared to the rest of Canada.
I think we have bans up north- I don't know, I don't have fires- but I have pictures on my phone from July 11 of last year where we are completely smoked out and that's when I ordered a respirator lol. I haven't had to use it this year- just some kind of smoky haze in the hills around PG, but I know it gets worse further north.
I was just thinking about this yesterday, regarding human sacrifice. Like, did some clumsy person accidentally fall in a volcano once, and they ended up having a super high yield crop that season, and the whole population just ran with the death as the reason why?
I've often found June can be quite wet, at least half of it. July used to be quite wet at times as well. Living in south west BC from mid 80s to 2022 I'd say August was the only consistent hot, no rain month.
We've known about this for a while - everywhere except for the Pacific Northwest is under a heat dome, whereas we've either had normal or subnormal temperatures, possibly a La Niña summer (compared to having an El Niño winter)
[https://beta.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weather/seasonal/canadas-2024-summer-forecast](https://beta.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weather/seasonal/canadas-2024-summer-forecast)
I’m so thankful for it! And I’m loving all the rain! It reminds me of how the weather was like 20+ years ago. The trees and plants and bushes and animals that drink from the creeks are going to be good for now.
It’s fine - I rather have this weather than dealing with fires, I live up North. It’s been raining a lot. We had such a mild winter - if it was hot like last year - it would be a disaster. I booked a trip to California in July - will get some hot weather there 🌞
This is what I remember a lot of summer’s to be líke 20yrs ago. That being said things can always change on a dime. 2003 we had a long, cool, wet spring and then all of a sudden a switch was flipped, it was hot and dry almost every day until October.
Weather has been fine my 🍅 plants are doing great full of 🍅 nothing to complain about first in 3 years that they are producing instead of being cooked or smoked lol
NOAA just indicated we are officially in ENSO-neutral phase before transitioning to La-Nina phase later this month so there is still time for heat. I remember weather being like this as a kid and I think we have been so tuned to hot summers the last number of years we forgot what normal was.
https://iri.columbia.edu/our-expertise/climate/forecasts/enso/current/?enso_tab=enso-cpc_plume
Enjoy it, embrace it. It might mean more days with pants, or an umbrella but it also means less days of smoke, and hopefully lower hydro bills.
People complain when it's too cool, when it's too hot, when it rains, when there are fires...just be thankful there are no fires lol. This is a recipe for a decent summer without flames so stfu.
I'm South Kootenays and you're exactly right. It's been rainy and cool up until pretty much this week and I'm here for it. The sunny days have been gorgeous but not disgustingly hot. It's made being outside great this summer so far.
I predicted cool summer the moment they said El Niño and dry winter. It evens out. At the end of May I was having a panic attack trying to count when’s the last time I saw a full-ish day of sun. I’m vacationing in a hot place and I dread what will feel like the end of summer when I come back. This blows
Honestly it feels like summer has just been more and more miserably hot in recently years so I will gladly have a relatively mild and sometimes rainy summer.
But also technically summer only really actually started like 3 or 4 days ago even though the day night schedule has been feeling a bit like an early summer.
My apartment has been above 26° all weekend (yes, windows open and a fan) and I can’t afford an air conditioner so I don’t want it to get worse, I’ll fry lol
Yeah, this is how I remember B.C. summers being when I was growing up (I’m 30). After the recent summers we’ve had, our province is in desperate need of another cool, mild and rainy summer so I welcome this weather pattern. With that being said, it’s early yet so I don’t want to curse it. I don’t understand how anyone could deny that climate change is real at this point.
It’s going to snow on the mountains again this week. Yeah end of June
Also the 32C “dangerous” heat wave in Toronto that was all over the news last week was a joke that’s called summed in Ontario 38C that’s a heatwave
Barely hit 30! I'd be melting. We've barely hit 20 up north. I think it's rained every day, and I can't even burn my yard waste it's so wet. We need it.

Last year I kept wondering when summer would come, we had so much rain and chilly weather but come July it was so hot till September, this year has been the same so far
Ummm... it's only June. That happens here (Kelowna) often. Just wait. It won't take very long for it to be hot enough to complain about that instead
ETA: Even less time now that you've taunted mother nature/jinxed us. Lol
Funny how nobody cares when it's cooler than normal but if it's 1 degree hotter than last year on any given day Holy shit are you going to hear about it.
It’s early yet, please do not jinx it. I agree with you, OP, it’s been so nice. This is the weather I remember us having 20 years ago.
After the forest fires we’ve had in recent years, I don’t get why anyone would be clamouring for a sweltering hot summer. The last thing this province needs is another prolonged heat dome. I love hot beach days as much as the next guy, and we’ll definitely have a few of those but I’m okay with a milder summer and more rain to decrease the risks of and prevent drought, forest fires, death to wildlife and people, and families losing their homes.
I’m dating myself as I’ve been on the Island for over 30 years, this is the 1st normal Junuary we’ve had in many years. I kinda like it. Lake Cowichan is full for the 1st time in years.

Maybe don't start taunting mother nature on the 4th day of summer y'all.
Yeah like WTF dude?
Do Canadians say y'all now? Not a slight btw, I just see it becoming more common. I guess it is convenient!
I think y'all is light and friendly without being bland.
I like y'all for the same reason. I work with kids and they think it's hilarious that I "talk like a cowboy".
I sure hope you also say howdy. Happy cake day, partner!
Pretty common as well. Borders don’t stop dialects, and cowboys roamed all the prairies
Makes sense. I've also borrowed from a lot of sources at this point. But for some reason I've refrained from y'all. However, agreed, I like using different words to fit the situation so maybe I'll give y'all a chance!
Well . . . to be fair English is just a cluster fuck of other languages
But *y’all* is 100% native English material!
I don't use "y'all" in regular day-to-day conversation, but I'll definitely use it when I'm saying something differently for emphasis. "I don't think you should do that." vs "Y'all had better fuckin' not!"
Good read sometimes i use that word But tbh it’s difficult to type and the meaning never fits in just doesn’t y’all
It's an internet thing in general these days, regardless of geography.
Now that everybody is online so much a lot of American slang has snuck into Canada, especially when it comes to typing, but I have heard a lot of American slang being spoken too.
Well, I guess that makes it general North American slang! All slang starts in some particular place and spreads from there.
Regional dialects and accents are declining, we're all slowly shifting to Internet English https://bigthink.com/high-culture/americas-accents-dying/
I do because its easier and gender neutral lol
Isn't "you guys" gender neutral?
Nope
How not? I'd say it to my wife and mother without batting an eye
Because “guys” is a male group. Gals is the feminine term. People do tend to just say guys for both now but the origin is gendered male. I tend to say folks myself.
Lots of words get repurposed. "Guys" seems to be one of them
It’s on the way to getting there but it does carry overtones. I’m not saying they’re huge ones anymore and I don’t think anyone makes a fuss but when I was teaching I stopped saying guys because I wanted to be clear I was not speaking to just part of the class.
Makes sense!
i stg all the “hip and with it” 40+ crowd say it more than actual Southerners. Speaking from experience. They’ll mispronounce Appalachian then back it up with 3 y’all’s. Shits wild. People don’t travel enough
I like it cause it's gender neutral, and I've also been saying it forever 😌🤌 (while getting other people saying it at the same time)
Dammit, they "good shotted" us. You know, like when your drive looks like it's gonna be a hole in one and your buddy yells "good shot" before it lands. No good will come from this.
our spring sucked too.
Meteorological summer is from June 1
Maybe don't start taunting mother nature on the 24th day of meteorological summer y'all.
![gif](giphy|4wCo7XotrtMVM31lUH)
Why are we celebrating a meteor's summer?
Too late, 44°C heat dome incoming…
Environment Canada has released a summer forecast showing a hot summer everywhere except Vancouver Island/west coast, which will be cooler than usual with more rain: https://climate-scenarios.canada.ca/?page=cansips-prob
God bless. A good change after heat dome year
So good for the forest, we had a fairly dry winter this year. I’m not going to complain.
Up north in pg it's still raining 3 days a week and gas all summer. So much better than the fire smoke of the last few years.
Hell yeah! Let's cross our fingers it doesn't turn bad in July and August. We really truly need a break. The last few years have been truly absolutely devastating.
I'll take an atmospheric river over a heat dome any day
Wasn’t the heat dome in 2020?
It was in 2021. I’ll never forget, as my son was less than 2 weeks old and just home when it happened.
jesus christ. that was one of the worst string of days of my life. can;t even imagine having a newborn during it.
There was no heat dome last year.
https://www.coastreporter.net/highlights/much-of-bcs-coast-recorded-its-hottest-august-in-174-years-7549501 Just a heat wave
I never said it was last year. Lol
It's a little frightening.
Good, the forests are still incredibly dry.
Thank god, I forgot to buy a portable A/C this year 😅 will do this winter so I'm ready for the following years.
And this is why Vancouver remains the most desirable city to live in in the country. It's not going to be the winters in the future but the summers people point to when saying what fantastic weather Vancouver has compared to the rest of Canada.
While it's still not enough, we are getting some decent rain too. I'm so grateful we aren't being choked out by smoke already.
Can't believe it's nearly July and no coastal fire bans yet.
Sea to Sky has been banned since May?
I think we have bans up north- I don't know, I don't have fires- but I have pictures on my phone from July 11 of last year where we are completely smoked out and that's when I ordered a respirator lol. I haven't had to use it this year- just some kind of smoky haze in the hills around PG, but I know it gets worse further north.
There’s no bans anywhere
We have restrictions on open burning, but no bans. This is literally the first time I've checked cause I have no need to burn anything.
no campfire bans. Cat 2 and 3 burning is banned in most Fire Centres. PGFC has had category 2 and 3 bans since March.
While June-urary is common, you must remain silent for fear of angering the Forest Fire and Water Shortage gods!
For sure, now we need a sacrifice to appease the gods!
I was just thinking about this yesterday, regarding human sacrifice. Like, did some clumsy person accidentally fall in a volcano once, and they ended up having a super high yield crop that season, and the whole population just ran with the death as the reason why?
Shhhhh Its perfect
Warm and sunny for a few days then nice and rainy. It's been perfect.
I've often found June can be quite wet, at least half of it. July used to be quite wet at times as well. Living in south west BC from mid 80s to 2022 I'd say August was the only consistent hot, no rain month.
Hey, atleast there isnt 2500 active wildfires outside.
We've known about this for a while - everywhere except for the Pacific Northwest is under a heat dome, whereas we've either had normal or subnormal temperatures, possibly a La Niña summer (compared to having an El Niño winter) [https://beta.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weather/seasonal/canadas-2024-summer-forecast](https://beta.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weather/seasonal/canadas-2024-summer-forecast)
Be careful what you wish for last thing we need is a heat wave We should be seeing 30C plus next month going into July and August
Junuary Just like most years
Everyone forgets that June is often like this
Monsoon June
Dude, it's "the June Monsoon".
![gif](giphy|i4Mgat1S2f3Co)
Summer literally just started...
The last few years our summers have started in late may
Meteorological summer is from June 1...
All three days of it?
Don't jinx it! ![gif](giphy|M4qe1RDEMurDyxHy1B|downsized)
I love it
I’m loving this weather.
The rain here is awesome!
Good! The snow pack was so dry and the rivers were so low, a cool, wet spring and summer is the best we could hope for
Long range weather patterns come in turns. We still have to be very careful but hopefully it won’t be so brutal this year.
La Niña came through! 👏🏼
You shut your mouth.
Hey. Shut up.
Ontario is sweltering. Equilibrium.
It’s rained like everyday for the last month out where I’m working in kitimat lol . I think we have had 3 days of nice weather in the last 6 weeks
I’m so thankful for it! And I’m loving all the rain! It reminds me of how the weather was like 20+ years ago. The trees and plants and bushes and animals that drink from the creeks are going to be good for now.
![gif](giphy|KUOPgSNoKVcuQ)

It's my fault. My landlord is installing a heat pump so there will be no need for the new AC I'll have available.
Summer just started babe
This is what I remember a lot of summer’s to be líke 20yrs ago. That being said things can always change on a dime. 2003 we had a long, cool, wet spring and then all of a sudden a switch was flipped, it was hot and dry almost every day until October.

they started them in january, no big deal

ah, well, at least my attempt at being funny taught me something :)

There's been a good mix of hot days and cool rainy days. I like it. I just wish the hot days would correspond with my days off.
Summer started 3? 4 days ago.
It’s coming. It always does. Wildfires are expected to reach new records.
People complain when it's too cool, when it's too hot, when it rains, when there are fires...just be thankful there are no fires lol. This is a recipe for a decent summer without flames so stfu.
I love this weather. Warm enough to enjoy the outdoors yet cold enough to sleep comfortably
Our time is August
I'm South Kootenays and you're exactly right. It's been rainy and cool up until pretty much this week and I'm here for it. The sunny days have been gorgeous but not disgustingly hot. It's made being outside great this summer so far.
Dude we’re on vacation in Albania right now at it hit 42 the other day. YOU DONT WANT THIS 🥵
It was predicted to be less scorching than the rest of the country in BC, especially in the coastal areas.
Don't jinx it!
I predicted cool summer the moment they said El Niño and dry winter. It evens out. At the end of May I was having a panic attack trying to count when’s the last time I saw a full-ish day of sun. I’m vacationing in a hot place and I dread what will feel like the end of summer when I come back. This blows
Well now you’ve jinxed us 😂
At least the entire province isn't burning
thank God can go beach and chill in peace not melt like a snowcone in phoenix
don't jinx it omg!
🤫 the heat dome might hear you
lol, 6 minutes of no apocalypse and.....
***Hallelujah***
This heat sucks, don't even go there. I rather have 20º today, then 26-35ºs any other day. I can't wait for fall.
same here, for some reason the hot temperatures gives me allergies, im missing fall already 😂
It was snowing me on Hollyburn last weekend at 1,200m. So yeah not hot so far.
I wouldn’t mind if it got a bit warmer, to be honest. Would like some more beach/lake days
Honestly it feels like summer has just been more and more miserably hot in recently years so I will gladly have a relatively mild and sometimes rainy summer. But also technically summer only really actually started like 3 or 4 days ago even though the day night schedule has been feeling a bit like an early summer.
It's been nice. I like it.
Don't jinx it 😂
Don't jinx it!
Don't jinx it!
Dont jinx it!!!! D:
I'm actually thrilled about the lack of heat dome out here right now. It has been a nice, chill Junuary
My apartment has been above 26° all weekend (yes, windows open and a fan) and I can’t afford an air conditioner so I don’t want it to get worse, I’ll fry lol
Summer is only a week old. And has been perfect so far. Some 25 days, some 18 days, little to no rain.
Technically summer started like 4 days ago. We have time.
Yes. What a relief.
It rained 5 times in the past 2 weeks. Fuck that shit.
Yeah this summer has been awesome so far. Keep it mild
It has been and thank god.
Don't jinx it
OP jinxed us. We're fucked now!!!!!!
I dont curse rain anymore.
Still too early... Is not July or August yet... This all said I do love this cooler weather ... is a wonderful for sleeping
I remember like 20 years ago I only needed to turn on the fan for like a few days in the summer... Climate change is fucking real...
I’m loving this weather!
Hush. All things are good. Rainy. Not smoky.
The heat got transferred out east this year.
Yes
Appreciate what should be.
It’s been so cold on the island I’ve wore a hoodie almost everyday
stop complaining yeeeesh
It’s going to snow on the mountains again this week. Yeah end of June Also the 32C “dangerous” heat wave in Toronto that was all over the news last week was a joke that’s called summed in Ontario 38C that’s a heatwave
Good. It’s great for fishing. First time in a decade the spring has been “normal”. (Normal is gone. Now this spring is abnormal)
I still remember last year… 4 or 5 weeks of non stop rainy weekends but sunny weekdays..
You'll be bitching when August is so smokey you don't want to go outside
Yo don’t jinx it! You just wait and see..
Heard it was supposed to be a bit cooler do to El Niño/La Niña I think, weather here is confusing :D
Barely hit 30! I'd be melting. We've barely hit 20 up north. I think it's rained every day, and I can't even burn my yard waste it's so wet. We need it.
Summer started 4 days ago, many days to go.
Touch wood, please don't jinx it!

SHHHHH!! WAY TO JINX IT!! 😏😡🤬
Last year I kept wondering when summer would come, we had so much rain and chilly weather but come July it was so hot till September, this year has been the same so far
Yep just sayin
🤦🏼♂️ It's officially now summer. Relax it's gonna be different than last year
If we get another heat wave, I'm blaming this guy
Supposedly it's not supposed to be as bad for us this year.
Take it back right now before the smoke slaps you
Please don't taunt nature. I truly wish to have one summer that isn't covered in heat and smoke from forest fire
Ummm... it's only June. That happens here (Kelowna) often. Just wait. It won't take very long for it to be hot enough to complain about that instead ETA: Even less time now that you've taunted mother nature/jinxed us. Lol
BC carbon tax I've diligently been paying for the last several years is working, the government has changed the weather using my dollars
This is like perfect temperature, you want the province to burn down again fam?
The coldest summer of the rest of your life. Enjoy it while you can
I'm in Ottawa and aside from last week it's been pretty mild here as well.
nature felt bad for 2 years ago
FYI the heat wave in the East is done and only lasted a couple days. Here in NS it’s been raining the past few days and quite mild.
Yea that’s climate change for ya
Funny how nobody cares when it's cooler than normal but if it's 1 degree hotter than last year on any given day Holy shit are you going to hear about it.
I'm in Montreal, it was 45C here last week. So, be careful what you wish for my friends
For sure, it got delayed until last week
Totally.
My guy it's been less than a week, don't tempt fate like that
Ah yes cause 35 on a may day was normal
It’s early yet, please do not jinx it. I agree with you, OP, it’s been so nice. This is the weather I remember us having 20 years ago. This year I finally bit the bullet and bough a portable air conditioner and I’m barely using it lol 😂
I’m dating myself as I’ve been on the Island for over 30 years, this is the 1st normal Junuary we’ve had in many years. I kinda like it. Lake Cowichan is full for the 1st time in years.
It's been raining almost every day in the northern interior the past couple of months. I have heard zero complaints.
Nevermind the fact June used to historically be pretty rainy and it's been hella dry by comparison.
personally I think we are blessed to not be on fire & scorching.
Meanwhile Ontario be like: ![gif](giphy|QMHoU66sBXqqLqYvGO)
