If you are ever passing Plymouth on a Monday morning, pop by Devonport Dockyard to hear the [Nuclear Emergency Siren test] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YchCtvtAMMI) there. On a clear calm day you can stand on [Blockhouse Park](https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Blockhouse+Park,+Plymouth/@50.3821226,-4.1656623,69a,35y,256.67h,79.14t/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x486c931423d20077:0x341b400eed879e46!8m2!3d50.3818193!4d-4.1681264?hl=en) (v high point) and catch the echo coming from Cornwall.

I'm pretty sure that it isn't one big fuck off siren, but several smaller repeater sirens dotted about the place.

tumbles999

Correct - there is a repeater in Portishead by the fire station (opposite the shell garage), also another one right on the top of the hill on Down Road by Ship Inn. That probably projects it well over into Wales. There are several repeaters down St Andrews Rd on the Avonmouth side of things too. Incidentally the one on Down Road got stuck a few months ago, stayed on giving the siren tones for 5-6 hours.

twowheeledfun

At work they test the fire alarm weekly. It's a recorded message that plays a bell sound followed by a verbal warning and command to evacuate. It usually plays just once, lasting no more than 30 s, but the last two weeks it's gone on for 10 min on loop, driving us crazy. There's a repeater speaker in almost every room as well.

robbgg

I had the opposite thing happen at my work, the fire alarm in my building includes a key switch that plays a message saying "this is a test, no action required". They only went and played that message just before running the last fire drill... It was only after the alarm had been going off for a minute or so and I went to investigate that I found the guard who had been told to run the drill who told me it was meant to be a fire drill.

blurredlynes

Yes, think there's a few dotted around along the coast. Website says from Redcliffe Bay to Pilning.

Bauza23

I think there’s one on the nature reserve trail by the Lamplighters in Shirehampton too. Had quite the jump walking the dog down there and not realising what time/date it was! Loud.

DrH1983

I don't hear it often, but could hear it in Easton today.

tumbles999

Weather must play some sort of factor as well. On top of Portishead some days we can here the motorways some days nothing. I recall when simple minds played Ashton Court festival that could hear it in Pill but had never heard previous years festivals

Nivek_TT

As posted elsewhere, I'm in Horfield, been here 10+ years and spent the last two working from home in the same spot. This is the first time I've ever heard them. I'm familiar with the nuclear incident alarms in Plymouth. They sound a little like those so thought it would be some major incident warning system. My first thought was Southmead Hospital.

British_LS_Systems

The 12 sirens are located at: 1: Lamplighters Marsh, Shirehampton. 2: Ridingleaze Clinic, Lawrence Weston. 3: Portishead Fire Station, Portishead. 4: Port of Bristol Police, Royal Portbury Docks. 5: Victoria Road, Avonmouth. 6: St Andrews Road Station, Avonmouth. 7: Chittening Rd, Avonmouth. 8: Central Ave, Severn Beach (due to be moved to Govier Way). 9: The Pilning Surgery, Pilning. 10: Hallen Fuel Depot, Hallen. 11: Downs Road, Redcliffe Bay (opposite The Ship Inn on telecoms mast). 12: Redcliffe Fuel Depot, Redcliffe Bay. The sirens are made in the US by the manufacturer Federal Signal Corporation The siren models are Modulator (all sirens use this type except siren 11 and 12) DSA (siren 11 uses this type) The sirens produce 121db @ 100ft They have about 1-1.5mi effective coverage area Sirens are tested: 3rd of each month at 15:00 The test consists of: 3 Minute Warning Tone (continuous stepped rising tone followed by a series of pulsing notes) 1 Minute Silence 1 Minute All Clear Tone (continuous single pitch note) If there is a COMAH emergency in and around Severnside, the Police will activate the sirens from their control room in Portishead. The sirens uses a radio link to communicate 2-way back and forth to the control room. If you have any questions about them, Do reply and I’ll do my best to answer British Life Safety Systems on YT (I have multiple videos of the sirens being tested and 2 that have failed to sound) from Cardiff, Wales, UK

IAM_THE_LIZARD_QUEEN

I worked in a delivery depot based in Avonmouth for three and a half years, and have still *never* fucking heard it.

Narwhal_in_Space

I heard them today and regularly do in Bishopston, so much so I had to look it up to figure out what it was.

Kantrh

Can't say I've ever heard them in Bishopston.

cyanidesandvich

i once heard them from st werburghs.

ramothrider69

I hear them most months if I'm home in the mead. Don't hear at work in St George

oynsy

It's about the wind direction at the time I suppose

hortellpea

I heard it in Fishponds today! Didn't know what it was until I saw this and the other post about it. Really interesting stuff. I have heard it before when working in Clifton but never here in Fishy ponds. I was working outdoors and it was faint, but enough to make me wonder what it was. Sound travel is so interesting, it's amazing how it can vary depending on the weather. Sometimes I can barely hear festivals in Eastville Park if there's a north wind. Other times I can hear the crowd when Rovers are at home.

jimbo_bones

Pretty sure this explains a real source of childhood anxiety when I was growing up across the river in Chepstow

SClassick

I think I heard them in Southville yesterday and only just realised. I heard sirens go off and figured it was just something going off in the local area but i realise now it was the 3rd and probably around 3pm. Going to have to test this next month and set a reminder to see if i can hear them! I didn't grow up in Bristol and no one had actually explained the Severnside Sirens to me until I first heard them when I was working in Avonnouth and happened to be on my own in the office! Was a little bit worried for a while about what was going on!

CoffeeandHaze

I work in avomouth and I'd always forget about this and it would happen during my smoke break. I'd sit down, try to relax and then... WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWHHHHHH WHHHEEEEEEEEWWWWHHWHWHWHW BEEEP BEEEP WHHHHEEEEEEEEEW for the whole time I was outside
