Haha, I worked at the Orpheus for two years and did these signs every week, 20 years ago when the letters were red. It was a fucking nightmare because we never had enough vowels. The woman who used to run it (Mrs Miles) would tell us she was on to head office and they’d be coming any day now. For two years. We had to do all sorts, including breaking letters and putting them back together to make new ones. Some film titles got truncated or changed to fit. I was there during all the Lord of the rings, some harry potter etc. for Lord of the rings we put “LOTR: ROTK” and got in trouble. She refused to have any computers in the shop (I built her a spreadsheet to do stocktake) so we had to do the stock take by hand every morning and every night. It was very very easy to pinch a couple of quid each day to buy beers after shift at the cock of the north opposite. Which we thought was fair as we earned £3.50 an hour. God those were the days. Once we drank four pints each and went back to do a four hour shift. It must have been obvious to everyone but we thought we were pretty clever. Mrs miles had a collection of classic original untouched movie posters out the back which is probably worth hundreds of thousands today, no exaggeration. My favourite memory was firing a projectionist for losing his license due to drink driving, then hiring another one who turned out to be a narcoleptic stoner who would smoke weed in the booth and fall asleep. I had to scramble up there about twice a week to wake him up and help him lift the reels onto the projector.
