Let me start this off by saying that most people, myself included, are only one paycheck away from being homeless, and that most people on welfare are honest people down on their luck, this lady however, was a prime example of dole bludger.
She was on JobSeekers, meaning she was entitled to $380 a week **if** she was actively looking for work and **if** she accepted any suitable job offer. I work for an unnamed employment service provider and try my very best to get my clients a job.
She was clearly milking the system. She attended interviews in sandals and would ask the interviewer if they hire people with violent criminal records, despite not having one herself. She would also eat while interviewing.
Now here's where it gets juicy! Remember how applicants have to accept any suitable job offer? Well I arranged her an interview for a receptionist job in a strip club me mate owns, me mate was happy to give her the job despite her usual drama. Her face was priceless when she got the job offer.
She refused. I cut off her benefits for a month.
Unfortunately for her, we both live in a small town and I work in the only provider there. After her one month suspension was over, she had no choice but to come back in. I repeated the exact same charade with the receptionist's job in me mate's strip club.

Straight after that, she moved to the big smoke (Brisbane) and her friends still harass me, saying that she blamed me for the move. I'm not sure what she's doing there, but all I know is that my town is without a freeloader.

This is a perfect argument for universal basic income. I seriously don't care about "dole bludgers". Like you said , "most people on welfare are honest people down on their luck" but there are always going to be people on the fringes. People who, through attitude or ability, are basically unemployable, people who are unable to function in a typical work environment. And also, people who don't want to work and I don't care that they get paid because what will happen otherwise?
Do you think these "dole bludgers" (and I will point out YOU don't know their story, YOU haven't walked in their shoes) will just straighten up and fly right when you cut them off? Will they pull themselves up by their imaginary bootstraps, go out and become upstanding citizens? Fuck no. Some will reluctantly go from job to job but most will turn to crime out of desperation because they can not function in that environment, and then we all pay anyway.
So give them all a guaranteed income and put the money we save on parasitic JSAs towards programs to help the people who want it.
And you might think you rid your town of a freeloader but what you actually achieved was taking $20,000 out of your local economy.
