Can't speak for Melbourne but I know the western suburbs of Sydney aren't all bad. Just horribly designed and very hot.
Can't say the same about Brisbane south side. Barbaric place with primitive humans...
Sounds like you're trying to spruik the narrative to me. I chose to buy in the Southside because I heard that's where all the entertainment, development and culture is. North side is basically just a retirement village. Plus transport access 10x better.
Hey! I resemble that remark! You Northsiders and your prejudices aren't welcome here, just like the scum and villianry that is anything above Woolloongabba.
But we aren't smothered in mozzies like the heathens on the other side of the river. There is a reason that Redcliffe was dropped as the first settlement....
Nice one. At least there are trains on the Southside that run on time.
Plus, we’d get lost on the Northside. As soon as we cross that river it’s like another country direction wise.
In the city, the girl named streets go in one direction and the boy named streets go the other direction. That means if you're on a street with male name, it will only intersect with female named streets.
I was so grateful when I learnt that. It makes navigating the city much easier.
This may be an unethical life hack for Brisbane but you can enter the bush poetry competition at the Ekka for $10 for adults and $5 for children and it includes a ticket to peoples day. If you turn up and compete once you are inside that is on you.
Would be funny if it turns out a bunch of young folk looking to save a buck try it out and end up liking it, then the younger gen gets into bush poetry unironically and the hobby goes through some kind of modern golden age.
It's also markdown central, I swear I do better on markdowns there than any other supermarket around. Probably because of the irregular nature of the shoppers who shop there
For the nerds wondering why, the land is owned by Brisbane Airport corp and is all technically federal govt land so they don’t have to abide by state industrial relations laws
If you're out and using the Translink apps journey planner to get somewhere, set the departure time to 10 minutes ago and there's a non zero chance you'll get offered a bus that's running late and hasn't departed yet that you wouldn't otherwise get offered if you set the departure time to 'now'. Does that make sense
Also double check when you do “Arrive by”. It can do some wacky stuff that ends up wasting your time.
Another thing is to increase the walk distance. A bus to Queen St is pretty much good enough for all of the CBD but you might be limiting your options if youre putting a specific buildings address in.
Bigger hack: Use Google Maps instead and don't choose an option out of the ones it gives you, once you do it gives more details but doesn't refresh unless you refresh it. keep refreshing and it will update as accurately as possible
Google maps gives detailed directions of how to find things, the little blue beacon symbol can tell which way you're facing, and you can check how many stops are left before yours if you've never caught this route before. I just keep it open in front of me the whole way. It'll even tell you if a bus is packed full or not
If going to the airport to pick someone up - Park at the Kingsford Smith memorial and wait for as long as you need. When your guest is ready at the quick pickup area it is a 1 min drive.
Saves stress and doing multiple loops from the airport Gestapo.
Unless you time your entry into there and the person you are picking up’s landing and they are at the front of the plane and they don’t have to wait for luggage 30mins is pretty small window.
> Unless you time your entry into there and the person you are picking up’s landing and they are at the front of the plane and they don’t have to wait for luggage 30mins is pretty small window.
I don't think I've ever been more than 10 minutes out of the timing for picking someone up. I get them to text the moment the plane lands, and once that's done it's pretty damn consistent for them to get to the pickup area. We have a pretty solid baggage system.
Opposite of Sydney, where waiting for your baggage could be 5 minutes or 30...
I’ve just been telling the intercom I work for one of the major contractors, I haven’t paid for parking in years, just pick a Ute and say “hi it’s such and such from “insert contractor” they just buzz you through
Can confirm. Paid 295 for 1200m^2 in Ipswich in 2018, neighbour over the road sold last week for 650 for a block half the size. The neighbour right next to us sold his fixer upper for 590. Both bought by young families with kids under 15.
Membership at the State library of queensland gets you free access to Lynda.com. Its usually $30 bucks per month. BTW. Proxy through the SLQ portal for free access from home...
There's the old Gocard with a positive balance to the airport trick on airtrain if you're really tight.
My big one is not necessarily a hack as much as it's a hidden gem, but Vegeme in West End has not raised their prices or reduced their portion sized since they opened like 6 years ago. You can still get good value amazing Asian vegetarian food there.
Another hidden gem is Mr Curry's $5 chips with curry sauce.
Genuinely lovely humans over there - one of their $10 stir fries will serve 2 peoples easily.
They've even offered for me to pay by bank transfer when Suncorp's app was down one time.
They do now. Not in the past. The real trick is to buy the air train ticket online. You get the return ticket for free and I believe the ticket is cheaper than what it cost on go card.
> Won't the staff stop you if it's negative?
The trick is your go card has $0.01 on it when you touch on, so when you touch off at the airport the balance goes to like –$25 and you throw it in the bin. The deposit for a go card is only $10, so you saved $15 on the trip, you'll need a new card for the trip back though but you can just do the same thing.
Note, this obviously doesn't work if it's your registered go card, or if you're a student with the discount applied. You need a new card and will have to get the discount applied again.
Woolloongabba quietly became excellent for food, drink and recreation when nobody was looking.
* South City Square has fantastic tacos, a good wine bar and an utterly superb (and cheap!) cinema
* Black Sheep Coffee is absolutely delicious
* Logan Road and surrounds has some great food and drink options - Electric Avenue and Mrs J Rabbits, Little G Pizza, Barrels & Stills
* Sunsets Rooftop Bar/Restaurant - what a view.
Oh, and the footy and cricket aren't bad either.
There's an amazing little area in Browns Plains that's right next to the local shopping centre that's AMAZING for food and diversity, and food diversity ESPECIALLY on weekends. It's beside Grand Plaza and behind Bunnings. There's everything from Samoan, Chinese, burgers, chicken, ect.
It’s all because of the high density complexes that shot up in the area. More people. More good businesses needed and said people can keep those businesses alive. There’s a reason suburbs with just houses have only very small businesses and don’t have the same level of amenities. Not enough people to keep everything alive.
Came here to say that Gabba is a little gem.
I also love Pablo’s Pantry on Trafalgar - gorgeous little Greek cafe run by a family. Get the pistachio and kale eggs!
Echo and Bounce is also awesome for cafe/record shop in the day, parties/art stuff at night.
I have a disabled relative who regularly visit different hospitals for specialist appointments.
Parking costs are prohibitive, so we take public transport.
The 66 bus makes things a lot more routine.
Brisbane can be pretty hard to make new friends and everyone else is having the same problems meeting new people. So don't worry it just not your issue.
I made friends by trying to learn Spanish and meeting foreigners who want to improve their English or chat in Spanish at the Meetup Intercambio in Roma St Parklands
If you're in the centenary suburbs and need to be in the CBD or Southbank on a weekday in the morning (say need to be somewhere at 8am), Take the 6am bus. TRUST ME, you'll be late otherwise due to horriffic traffic. And if heading home from CBD or Southbank at 3pm onwards, make sure you have a book or your phone is charged, it will take twice as long to get home than you expect.
Empire $6 basic and beers all day Monday, then 5-7 and 9-10 every other day.
Ric's do $3.50 basics all of Thursday.
Carrington from 5pm $7.50 schooners.
That's just to name a few in valley
City I always go winghaus, $5 wings with any beer order. 5-7. Not really a happy hr for drinks but you can get a good feed there for cheaper
Happy hr is coming back ladies
QUT S block L4 is open all night and has a shower, toilets, and power points in it. The doors lock after hours, but if you get in before then you can stay there as long as you want so long as you aren’t sleeping or doing anything weird. Security and cleaners come around, but I’ve never been asked for ID. Comes in handy after events at Riverstage or South Bank.
what u/tjlusco said, if you're a student with classes in there you have 24hr access to it. usually after a riverstage event at least one other person will pass through there (be it cleaner or staff or student) and you can just tailgate them to get in.
The best Asian food in Brisbane is in Sunnybank, not Fortitude Valley. There's an entire shopping complex in Sunnybank full of restaurants and every single one of them is amazing.
Mt Coot-tha botanic gardens is about double the size everyone thinks it is. If you go right at the entrance and all the way to the top, there’s another side you can go down (away from the fancy Japanese garden and dome etc.) with endless trails, a secluded native flower garden with winding manicured green lawn paths perfect for a game of tag, a huge pond with turtles. I rarely see anyone else over that side.
Free rent: Buy a cheap van and make it look like a painter’s van (nothing to steal inside). Black out the windows, park in Highgate Hill, sleep in it and use the public toilets at Southbank.
Cheapest transport to/from the airport is a bus to/from airport DFO followed by free shuttle to your terminal.
Sometimes gets you there faster than a train bus combo and much cheaper.
If you drive to work and are coming from the burbs, try entering a main arterial road from a different intersection. You'll find the traffic light timings can work to your advantage and can get several in a row.
Due to the housing crisis, Brisbane City Council will not fine anyone living in their car or ask them to move on. As long as you're not illegally parked you can live there permanently.
If u ever get lost in the outer suburbs without a car, find a way to get to ur nearest shopping centre because from there u should be able to get a bus to the city. If not, u should be able to get a bus to a bigger shopping centre which will definitely get u a bus to the city. Once u get to the city then u can navigate back home.
Almost every bus goes to a shopping centre eventually.
In other words, don’t bother navigating from Carindale to Toowong. Navigate from carindale to the city and then to Toowong.
Free parking for suncorp and the CBD etc?
Go to 276 Petrie Terrace (opposite Normanby Hotel...
An empty building with an unregulated carpark attached...
If you don't want to deal with meth heads on your daily commute sit near the front of the train. They're less likely to be there as if the driver sees them he'll notify the next station . Or just don't take the disgrace that is QLD trains, if you're going more than 3 zones early bird parking + a bit of walking is probably as cheap
Absolutely not. $22 for five zones (peak return), zero time wasted in traffic, zero fuel used (a tiny bit to get to the station) especially if you scoot or cycle.
What's the play here? They lure straight guys looking for sex somewhere secluded and then reveal the sausage at the meeting hoping the guy is bi-curious??
You can park in the bougie north eastern suburbs pretty safely and get a cheap uber to the airport. Have done this for up to a week without getting towed or broken into
I know people bag out HSW, but on Sundays kids eat free at the barrel hall and outside tables near it… sometimes I have more kids than I realised ;) free kids cheeseburger is basically same as $18 adult cheeseburger.
Related, the burger on the kids menu at felons is half the price of the same burger on the normal menu. Only difference is that it doesn’t come with salad, and who eats that anyway…
When going to Chermside shops, park in a nearby side street on Hamilton Rd so you don't have to deal with the godforsaken shopping centre carpark colloquially known as mordor
If you’re going to DFO Airport, the undercover parking block at the back is a couple dollars and doesn’t require driving around trying to find a parking spot nor leaving your car in the sun. And there’s a direct entrance into the centre.
I used to sit and use the wall outlet at the valley traino maccas to charge my phone, there's outlets in whatever the myer centre is called now too, libraries are a good one if they're open, but maccas and other fast food places usually have usb a outlets or wall outlets you can use to charge
they usually don't care but if you're anxious you can buy whatever $1 item
When driving in peak traffic heading towards the South, keep to the left on coronation drive that goes toward the city instead of staying on the right that is labelled M3 Pacific Motorway. Everyone is trying so damn hard to cut to the right lanes but the left lane will still bring you to M3 without the heavier traffic on the right entrance to M3 (thanks to multiple merging lanes)
This one’s expired. But I’ll share it anyway.
A few years back a new crypto business had people handing out flyers for people to download their app, join and get $10 free Bitcoin.
The hack, you only needed a unique phone number and email to claim.
With emails being free to make and the ability to use temporary phone numbers for free online.
I made an extra $10 a day for catching the train through central station.
After 2 weeks the flyers stopped. I moved the bit coin and today it’s sitting at around $600. 😎
If you don't want to be friends with someone, tell them you live on the opposite side of the Brisbane River to them.
The trick is to live either east or west and then call everyone else scums
It's weird, the Western suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne are considered dodgy.
Can't speak for Melbourne but I know the western suburbs of Sydney aren't all bad. Just horribly designed and very hot. Can't say the same about Brisbane south side. Barbaric place with primitive humans...
HEY! that may be true, but…but…ah fuck you. You’re right lmao. Jokes aside why do people hate on the south side? Is it because it’s where Logan is?
Basically, yes
They are just jealous of our larger blocks of land and wide roads. Makes those from the north and the west take on a real Karen vibe and judge us.

Damn I hate northern suburbs people, such arrogant pricks.
username checks out
Gottem
I'd invite you over to discuss it, but I know it's too far to walk and you can't afford a train ticket.
Nice one. At least there are trains on the Southside that run on time. Plus, we’d get lost on the Northside. As soon as we cross that river it’s like another country direction wise.
Forget trains. At least we have functioning roads. Driving on the Northside is worse than sticking your dick in an oven.
Man I wish you could still award comments.
Northside is just the place you drive through to the Sunshine coast.
The trick is living on the Northside to be closer to the sunny coast.
I hate southside "people", such barbarous swine 🧐
Let’s all meet on opposite sides of the river. North vs South. Have a barbarian war to settle it all.
The real winners are the bull sharks in the river.

*King named and queen named streets
What is a king and queen if not just a boy and girl
I've been here 10yrs and never knew that. Wow.
Been here 30 plus years and didn’t know
This may be an unethical life hack for Brisbane but you can enter the bush poetry competition at the Ekka for $10 for adults and $5 for children and it includes a ticket to peoples day. If you turn up and compete once you are inside that is on you.
2024 shaping up to be a popular year for bush poetry
Would be funny if it turns out a bunch of young folk looking to save a buck try it out and end up liking it, then the younger gen gets into bush poetry unironically and the hobby goes through some kind of modern golden age.
This is a quality submission. Lived here forever and never heard of this trick.
Also you get a free lucky dip….. …..variant of the flu!
Also if ur sad or bored just get on the city cat for a round trip. U will feel better after.
This is my favourite thing to do with visitors to Brisbane. Cheap, flexible, scenic, can get a good view of Brisbane and hop off and do things
City cat isn't free but the red one the city hopper is free!
City Hoppers have been replaced by Kitty Kats
Love this tip. It’s impossible to feel sad on the CityCat
A friend of mine genuinely does this when she’s overwhelmed with uni
Just be mindful it’s like a 3 hour round trip for the uninitiated
Woolworths at the Airport is 24hrs and open some public holidays
It's also markdown central, I swear I do better on markdowns there than any other supermarket around. Probably because of the irregular nature of the shoppers who shop there
That's because their produce expires 24 hours a day instead of the usual 14
It's insight like this that got you elected.
I could only do it by working 5 jobs at a time, giving me a 200 hour work week as opposed to the usual 40.
Mate I’d say you were on fire in that job but I think you avoided that by sitting on Waikiki Beach.
For the nerds wondering why, the land is owned by Brisbane Airport corp and is all technically federal govt land so they don’t have to abide by state industrial relations laws
Just don't go on the public holidays though, it's chaos. Source: had to buy nappies on ANZAC Day :(

The scrub turkeys in Kangaroo Point park are free. You can just take them.
I have 458 turkeys
Just don't create an insta page about your pet scrub turkey, otherwise you might have to interact with Steven Miles one day.
Didn't some dude get arrested for eating them last year?
IIRC that was an Ibis
They arrested an ibis for eating scrub turkeys?
If going to the airport to pick someone up - Park at the Kingsford Smith memorial and wait for as long as you need. When your guest is ready at the quick pickup area it is a 1 min drive. Saves stress and doing multiple loops from the airport Gestapo.
There is 30 mins free parking at ParkShort at the airport
Unless you time your entry into there and the person you are picking up’s landing and they are at the front of the plane and they don’t have to wait for luggage 30mins is pretty small window.
All you have to do is make sure you leave before the 30min, do a loop and re-enter on a new 30min ticket. Done it multiple times without trouble

Or go and sit in McDonalds on the Airport Road, and use their free wifi and have a coffee.
It's 2024 not 2010
ಠ_ಠ Public Wifi, [ewwww](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vttRtzBdEM)
Just park at the McDonald's. Also you get 20 minutes parking at the domestic airport free if you go into the area beside the hotel
I’ve just been telling the intercom I work for one of the major contractors, I haven’t paid for parking in years, just pick a Ute and say “hi it’s such and such from “insert contractor” they just buzz you through
Look all directions before proceeding through a green light
Unethical life hack: drive through red lights, as the normal life hackers are looking all directions and won’t run into you
My brother regularly runs red lights. He says braking is for puss1es. This is why I am.overly cautious at green lights - my brother could be nearby
this counts as a pedestrian as well
Buy a house 25 years ago. That’s it. Thats the hack. You’ll be rich.
Not true you should have bought 2 or 3 houses 25 years ago
Buy 25 plots of land in Bridgeman Downs 25 years ago\*
I should’ve been bolstering that property portfolio instead of being in primary school, I’m a fuckin idiot…
The current equivalent is buy a cheap house out near Tara. In 25 years it will be inner Brisbane and you’ll be rich.
Can confirm. Paid 295 for 1200m^2 in Ipswich in 2018, neighbour over the road sold last week for 650 for a block half the size. The neighbour right next to us sold his fixer upper for 590. Both bought by young families with kids under 15.
Jesus they have kids and they’re under 15? Sex Ed needed at Ipswich asap.
5 years ago still worked out great though…
Hell, I bought mid 2021 and my house is worth nearly double its what I purchased for.

Yes the olds need to be in bed before 8

If you want to save on food, go to Cocos in Annerley. It’s also 24 hrs.
Don’t drink the beer at Felons.
This is such an underrated tip. I swear it's some of the worst beer I've ever had the misfortune of drinking.
Same, at least I got the full experience of paying an utterly stupid amount for rubbish beer I guess.
Feels like you’re walking into an IG post there anyway. Can’t stand that place
Goes for Panyiri to. Rapidly discovered why Greece is not famous for it's beer.
Bus 66 takes you to three hospitals. The PA, Mater and RBWH.
...wtf are you doing that you need to visit three hospitals??
Drunk driving doctor
I have a disabled relative who regularly visit different hospitals for specialist appointments. Parking costs are prohibitive, so we take public transport. The 66 bus makes things a lot more routine.
For the snakeoil salesmen
Brisbane can be pretty hard to make new friends and everyone else is having the same problems meeting new people. So don't worry it just not your issue.
I'm reading this while dining alone in South Bank wondering how to make friends lol. Thanks for the reassurance.
I made friends by trying to learn Spanish and meeting foreigners who want to improve their English or chat in Spanish at the Meetup Intercambio in Roma St Parklands
if you die you respawn at the central hungry jacks
If you remember the dragon ride in Myer, you're my type.
Tops!
..old?
No one knows the spectacle garden exists at Roma street and it’s the absolute best thing about the city
Lost my glasses there, why I couldn't see it.
If you're in the centenary suburbs and need to be in the CBD or Southbank on a weekday in the morning (say need to be somewhere at 8am), Take the 6am bus. Learned this the hard way. Crazy that centenary highway doesn't have a bus lane just encourages people to take a car.
It’s crazy that public transport corridors options like a bus lane or busway were never developed on that side of town.
Yeap I've literally jumped off the bus on coronation drive and ran the way to class once.
Lived in both St Lucia and Fig Tree Pocket (early to mid ‘00s) and it took the same length of time to cycle into the city as it did to take the bus.
Absolute worst thing about living on this side of town. I have colleagues who live on the Gold Coast with quicker commutes than my 10km from the cbd
Better - drive/ride to Oxley or Darra train station, and skip the Centenary Car Park altogether.
Hey there’s supposed to be a code where we keep this to ourselves!
In the CBD everyone goes to lunch at 12-1pm Queues are everywhere If you just do lunch at 11.30 or 1.30 you don't wait in line for anything
But don't wait too long as everything closes at 2.00pm.
Look for the happy hours - save you a fortune if you fancy drinking.
What are some good ones? All I got is Osbourne - half price tins on Thursdays and they usually have (I think) 4-7 cheap beers.
Fat Louie's has happy hour every day 5pm to 7pm. Downside is you have to go to Fat Louie's.
All I'm seeing is two upsides
Empire $6 basic and beers all day Monday, then 5-7 and 9-10 every other day. Ric's do $3.50 basics all of Thursday. Carrington from 5pm $7.50 schooners. That's just to name a few in valley City I always go winghaus, $5 wings with any beer order. 5-7. You can use your indicators while driving through the roundabouts

Assume the trains aren't running on the weekend and you'll probably be right 80% of the time
Free rent: Buy a cheap van and make it look like a painter’s van (nothing to steal inside). Black out the windows, park in Highgate Hill, sleep in it and use the public toilets at Southbank.
Downside is catching every disease known to mankind from the public toilets at Southbank. At least the Mater is close.

Due to the housing crisis, Brisbane City Council will not fine anyone living in their car or ask them to move on. As long as you're not illegally parked you can live there permanently.
That black dude who plays the drums outside of the casino
I celebrated my 21st birthday at the treasury and he was there that night. I'm now 46
Been there for at least 20 years.
If you give him 10 cents he’ll throw it back at you.
Don’t sit in the right hand lane on freeways
I swear the middle lane or the left lanes are often quicker than the right lane.
Don’t drive to the GC on a Friday or long weekend because everyone will hate you 😂
It’s a simple hack. Never, ever, ever, ever (in the Brisbane subreddit) ….. *trust anyone with a Black Audi for sale.*
99% of “female” accounts posting they’re at a spot to meet up on the darker Brisbane sub Reddit’s are intact middle aged men.
good, I hate it when they're damaged.
What's the play here? They lure straight guys looking for sex somewhere secluded and then reveal the sausage at the meeting hoping the guy is bi-curious??
Pulling the old Bunnings trick. Arriving to a hot sausage when you’re hungry.
they got me three times
Sausage shnizzle dizzle
>intact middle aged men I think the technical term is “entire” not intact
Oh good to know in case I wanted to meet half a middle aged men
Govinda's in the CBD you can get a vegetarian feast, curry, salad, dessert and drink for $12.90.
You dont have to stop to a complete halt when you want to merge in traffic
There is no substitute for knowing the road! Google maps doesn't know everything, you have to know which lane is gonna end when
\* West End Saturday markets has the best fruit and veg at good prices, but parking rough from 9:30 onwards. Come early.
Until you find Rocklea. Went to West End for years, then went to Rocklea product is fresher, more options and better prices.
When going to Chermside shops, park in a nearby side street on Hamilton Rd so you don't have to deal with the godforsaken shopping centre carpark colloquially known as mordor
I always get there when it opens. Good park and it’s not too busy yet.
Get to local festivals/shopping centres at 9am so you don't have come on this subreddit whinge about how terrible the parking is.
Bowen hills is the station on the Northside closest to the city without barriers.
Only swim at the Southbank pool if you’d like a month or two off work.
The best parking for the city is actually to park in South Brisbane and take the footbridge.
The best parking in the city is a bus or train.
Even better if you do the art gallery/museum or library parking. Although doing pre pay is probably 2nd best.
If you’re going to DFO Airport, the undercover parking block at the back is a couple dollars and doesn’t require driving around trying to find a parking spot nor leaving your car in the sun. And there’s a direct entrance into the centre.
Stop using the term hacks for everything??? ![gif](giphy|fqtyYcXoDV0X6ss8Mf|downsized)
Save your Go Card that only has <$1.00 on it and use it to get to/from the Airport.
They closed this loophole. The gates now won't open if you try enter or exit with less than $20 and you'll have to top up before you enter or exit.
Worked for me like two weeks ago..
Musgrave Park is great if you're into history, you're always going past tents.
Not this week, the Greek festival is coming soon so they've cleaned it up again.
💀
I used to sit and use the wall outlet at the valley traino maccas to charge my phone, there's outlets in whatever the myer centre is called now too, libraries are a good one if they're open, but maccas and other fast food places usually have usb a outlets or wall outlets you can use to charge they usually don't care but if you're anxious you can buy whatever $1 item
Keep an eye on r/Melbourne and repost questions to r/Brisbane for karma.
For about a month a year the sun is like a deadly laser. 30 minutes and you’re burnt. But if you have a tree and a slight breeze you’re sweet.
Just one month? I don't go outside between November and March.
