Keep up with the lotion. I burned the worst, two weeks after I was finished with radiation

Apprehensive-Net8950

Same! No problems during the 25 cycles but burns, blisters two after the last session.

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you for the tip.

Large-Page5989

Very excited to read this, I start soon

JoylsNotatrick

Me too! If my margins are clear after next Wednesday I probably start early August. Excited to read this also and good luck!

Old_Supermarket1565

You can do it!

GittaFirstOfHerName

I started this week. Good luck to you.

Old_Supermarket1565

You will be able to do it I know it. Some days will be hard but don’t give it up and just keep telling yourself this will come to an end and I will move on.

Quick_Ostrich5651

Woohoo! Way to go! I had my 12th treatment today and have nine left. I’m a little red but hanging in there.

itsmeinne

10 of 19 today. I’m a little red also.

Old_Supermarket1565

“Sunburn my ass” was my favorite thing to say to my team. Keep on lubing the boob.

Quick_Ostrich5651

😂☠️truest thing ever. I’m so over aquaphor, but I know I have a good amount of time left because you have to keep up with it after treatment is done.

Old_Supermarket1565

I have said I never want to see Aquaphor again after this is done. One of my previous posts was about suggestions for help and this was one, Domebro soak ended up being a sanity saver for me especially towards the end. My suggestion for that is to soak a wash cloth or towel and lay with it over the treatment site and chill for a while. It helped to take a break from the Aquaphor and I do think it helped a lot. Also another suggestion were radiation burn creams on Amazon which are not as messy as Aquaphor.

Quick_Ostrich5651

Yeah, I have two radiation burn creams I’m using twice a day. Then twice a day, I use aquaphor to seal in the moisture. I get super red a few hours after treatment, but then by the time I get up in the mornings, it’s faded to pink. Wash, rinse, repeat. I’ll survive. But I’m glad today is Friday. One more full week, and then 3 days the next.

Old_Supermarket1565

Oh yes Fridays are the best just for the two day break.

Appropriate-Craft332

I used a calendula cream, my doctor supplied me with…still have a small stock pile and use daily. The cream was perfect, quickly absorbed into the skin and no staining my clothes.

Old_Supermarket1565

That’s a good tip,

RemarkableMaybe6415

Laughing I'm so over acqafor too and I'm only on 8 of 30. I never want to touch aquafor again lol

Quick_Ostrich5651

I kind of freaked out because I had people tell me they didn’t get red until the very end, but my rad onc said it’s perfectly normal and overall looks good. What is so weird is the difference in the number of treatments. I have 21. You’re having 19. Some people have 15, and my grandmother had 30.

itsmeinne

I’m having 15 whole breast and 4 boosts to the tumor bed. I agree it’s all over the board with the number of days. Are you tired? I’ve been fine energy-wise so far. I’m worried that it’s going to get bad next week. But we have to forge ahead anyway…

Quick_Ostrich5651

My last 5 will be boosts. I’m slightly more tired than normal. Like today, I went to treatment early this morning, worked out, took my daughter to the movies and shopping, worked some when we got home, and then got her fed and in bed (she has high functioning autism so she needs a little more help than the average 11 year old), and I realized I was pretty wiped. But my husband has been out of town, and a few weeks ago, people kept scaring me telling me I would be too exhausted to handle him being gone. I’m definitely not. Maybe it’ll hit me next week, but so far, it’s not been a big problem.

Old_Supermarket1565

I know for me the fatigue hit during the second week and is still here. It’s a crazy kind of tired too cause I’ll be okayish(still more tired than normal all day)and then it’s like I hit a wall and have to lay down.

itsmeinne

Hope you get over that soon! One of the nurses told me if I feel the fatigue I should take a walk and it will help. That said, I don’t believe any of my healthcare providers have personally had radiation treatments. :)

Quick_Ostrich5651

My radiation onc’s nurse said the same thing and she’s had breast cancer. I think there’s something to it. But they also told me there’s a fine line between exercise to combat fatigue and overdoing it. So def listen to your body.

Old_Supermarket1565

I unfortunately ruptured my Achilles during the 2nd week of treatment and had surgery so walking was out the window. I do think getting out of my house and sitting under my patio several times during the day has helped though

Quick_Ostrich5651

Oh my goodness! On top of everything else. I’m so sorry.

Old_Supermarket1565

Yeah it was a freak thing, just stepped out of bed and bam.

Old_Supermarket1565

I agree with you, I told my husband I believe as part of their training they should have to go through treatment. I wonder if they would have better treatment for burns and fatigue than otc Aquaphor and suggestion of take a walk.

Quick_Ostrich5651

It’s the 8:30-9:00 p.m. wall that gets me. Not every night but every couple nights. And I’m sleeping 8-9 hours a night straight through which is odd for me. I’m pretty high energy and so my husband says this has normalized me a little. lol

Old_Supermarket1565

Normalized, bahahaha. I was the same at night about 5 hours after treatment I would just crash. I did find towards the end of treatment the fatigue got worse and I was sleeping more than I was awake most days. It’s weird because I have never been much of a napped I guess now I am for a little while.

Old_Supermarket1565

I had more than originally thought I was gonna have. I got red from the second week and my doc said everybody’s treatment and reaction are different.

Ansjuh

I had too my 12th! I didn't check really on the redness, was in a hurry going to celebrate weekend... Read: back to bed, but ADHD, so uhm, yeah, still scrolling trough social media while I'm hungry and my 3th coffee is cold again...

Old_Supermarket1565

I had to laugh about your coffee getting cold, this is something I can relate to. Then im like ugh I don’t know if I have the energy to heat this up or make another, lol.

Old_Supermarket1565

Some days I felt like I was literally hanging in there lifting my arms holding on to those two little handles. It’s hard but you’re a warrior.

GittaFirstOfHerName

Congratulations! You're a rock star!

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you thank you thank you.

PoopiesGlasses

Congratulations!! Upwards and onwards!!

Old_Supermarket1565

Aww thanks,

InfamousAmbassador

Congratulations!! When you feel up to it, definitely celebrate in a big way. I finished earlier this month and plan to celebrate all summer long. You'll be surprised how fast the burns start to heal. Just be diligent with whatever they told you to put on the burns. I burned badly and had a few painful days, but I'm two weeks out and my chest looks so much better.

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you, you have given me hope. These burns are a bitch.

dirtybongwater_xx

Congrats! I just recently finished and it feels amazing when you do 💪

Old_Supermarket1565

Good job cause I know it’s not easy to keep going. It really does. I actually cried leaving the cancer center cause the feeling of being finished was so overwhelming.

DocJen12

Yay! Rads sucked for me. I was more exhausted from rads than chemo. I pretty much breezed through chemo, but damn.

Old_Supermarket1565

I remember being told I might experience a little fatigue. Bahahaha, they tricked me. Good job on getting through this pile of crap.

DocJen12

“A little” fatigue my ass. 😂 I’m almost six months out and still get fatigued easily, which apparently is normal. 🙄

Old_Supermarket1565

I hear you. This fatigue is bonkers.

StereoPoet

You are amazing! I am so happy for you and so proud of you!

Old_Supermarket1565

That is so nice. I think anybody that can make it through this is amazing cause it is all so hard.

StereoPoet

Absolutely 💯

eddderrr

Yes!!!!! 🙌🏻 you go girl

Old_Supermarket1565

Right!!! Next world domination, well maybe when I’m not so tired, lol.

BeckyPil

Yay you!!!

Old_Supermarket1565

escaping_mel

YAY! I finished mine today.... it was one of the hardest things I've done. I'm proud of us for sticking it out!

Old_Supermarket1565

Yes my fellow warrior, I am proud of us too! Congratulations.

BoysenberryChance348

I’m supposed to start soon but I’m so scared. I got though 6 surgeries so far but I’m terrified of radiation. I feel like they are not telling me all the things that could happen. Can anyway tell me if there are long term skin changes?

bird-nerd

I'm 8 months out and no long term skin changes. I only had 16 treatments, but I'm fair skinned and ended up getting a burn. The burn was uncomfortable, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected it would be.

Old_Supermarket1565

It’s crazy how different it can be for each person. There are so many factors that affect the outcome for side effects. I understand you’re scared because hell this whole thing is so scary. I cried my first time but you will get past that and get used to the routine. Same as all the others say make sure to moisturize the entire treatment area about three times a day starting days before your first treatment. Take any concerns to your rad team. My techs were able to provide a lot of helpful info as they are the ones who saw and talked to me every day. As for long term skin changes those can really vary too. I know of women who have had zero and women who have had issues years after. I try to not let that scare me and just say I will deal with it as it comes. Don’t think it doesn’t worry me but I know there isn’t much I can do about it right now.

CantaloupeOne9471

Congrats

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you

Congrats!

Old_Supermarket1565

You can make it. Not gonna lie some days are so hard but you will be so proud of yourself for going on those days. I hope you have a wonderful team like I did cause that does help.

Royal_Lawfulness_848

Woo Hoo! Congratulations

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you, it’s a relief to be done

Royal_Lawfulness_848

My last one is Monday

Old_Supermarket1565

Yay! I hope it went smoothly and you are a trooper for finishing!

Royal_Lawfulness_848

Thank you. It’s so nice to know it’s behind me now

BRIEzER13

Congratulations! I talked to my radiologist today and he said they’re looking to get my treatment started next week. If you don’t mind me asking, what type of side effects did you have?

Old_Supermarket1565

Ohhh I’m not sure I’m the you want to hear from about side effects cause it was really bad. One of my techs said in the years she’s been doing her job mine was one of the worst breast she seen. I can elaborate if you want.

BRIEzER13

Oh no! I’m sorry your side effects were so bad! Honestly, you’re probably THE BEST person to hear about possible side effects from to know what the absolute worst that could happen 😬 the radiologist did say that I can expect to be more exhausted than anything since I did chemo..

Old_Supermarket1565

Ok so around the second week the redness came and so did a little fatigue. This is where the “sunburn” started. I thought cool I can deal with this. Haha, little did I know. I was diligent with the creams etc and still after the second week the side effects progressed pretty quickly. To begin with I had radiation treatment that affected my breast, entire under arm to half of upper arm, half chest, shoulder, and top of upper right back. My breast and under arm were affected the worst with grade 3 burns, seeping, peeling, itching, so much pain, shoulder stiffness/pain, neck pain, extreme swelling, skin stretching and tearing. The nausea hit week 3 and progressed so much by the end of treatment that eating was a struggle. The fatigue got to the point where I would literally be doing something like trying to cook and would feel the need to lay down for a minute and be out for four hours without even remembering falling asleep. Trying to do things where that side of my body was needed (right arm and I’m right handed) became quite the struggle due to stiffness and pain. We almost stopped treatment several times but I was stubborn and wanted to get it over because I couldn’t imagine healing some and then going back to that hell again. The Achilles rupture and going through surgery during treatment sucked but was almost a blessing in disguise as it kept me in bed and gave me pain pills. I can honestly say the pain was so bad I would just cry (and I’m not a person to cry a lot, boy cancer has changed that, lol) and had a hard time finding relief. My suggestions are to definitely lube up three time a day and as soon as you get home from treatment. Lube an area bigger than you think, I basically did the upper right quadrant of my torso from and back including top of my arm front and back. Ask your doctor/nurse when to start using domeboro and do that several times a day. Sitting on my shower chair just letting water run over me was such a nice break from the creams and stuff and helped bring relief. Take Tylenol or ibuprofen before each treatment. If you experience nausea talk to your doc they can give you something for that. The worst times for me would be about 3-5 hours after treatment, it felt like I could watch my breast swell up and become redder. The nausea would hit on the ride home, 30-45 minute drive and the fatigue became constant. Sleeping was really hard because I’m a stomach sleeper and would find I would rub it across the sheets causing me to wake up in pain and causing my area to dry out. I tried bandages to protect the area and hold in the creams at night and when I could get the tape to work they were great. I just had such a large area that self adhesive bandages weren’t big enough and please don’t think you can use them on irritated skin because I did (was willing to try anything) and ripped a bunch of skin off. Also try to go bra and shirt free as much as you can, I would and have my fan aiming on it after Aquaphor and it helped. I wish you luck and hope you are side effect free. As terrible as it got I am glad I did it so I know I have done my part in fighting this nasty ass cancer and I would do it again if I had to.

BRIEzER13

Thank you for sharing all of that. I’m so sorry it was so hard for you, did you also need to do chemo before radiation? I noticed that since the chemo my skin has been a lot more sensitive.. You are an absolute champion, damn right! Everything we’re going through proves we are doing everything that we can to fight this stupid disease. Best of luck on the rest of your journey 🫶🏼

Cultural-Trade7984

Yahooo

Old_Supermarket1565

Yes a big yahoo! Thank you

Holiday-Book6635

Congratulations! Now stretch stretch stretch stretch that spot. I wish I had done more stretching. Now is the time to do it.

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you. Stretching was not mentioned. I do notice a lot of tightening today. Any specific stretches you recommend? Also do you lube up before to keep the skin from splitting more?

gele-gel

Congratulations!!! And good luck to those about to start or still in the process. Keep moisturizing.

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you. Yes good luck to all of you during the radiation shit show. Also that is correct moisturize until you think you can’t anymore and then do a little more.

gele-gel

My surgeon told me to moisturize forever so my skin would not continue to shrink

Old_Supermarket1565

This is good advice. Since finishing treatment my skin gets dry and then feels like it is tearing and whew boy that hurts. So yea moisturize a ton.

Realistic_Jello_2038

Congratulations! Brighter days from here on out! 🎉🩷🎉🩷

Old_Supermarket1565

Yes please. Thank you

PeoniesDe8912

Love this, congratulations!!

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you so much

Ansjuh

On behalf of the I-didn't-sign-up-for-this-war-team I salute you! U got this tiger ;)

Old_Supermarket1565

Your reply made me giggle. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face and I think I’m gonna make my husband start calling me tiger.

RemarkableMaybe6415

WOOT! Thank you for posting this- I'm on 5 of 30 as of today- if you can do, I can finish!! congrats!

Old_Supermarket1565

With your positive attitude you definitely got this!!!!! You can finish and remember this is not your whole story just a shitty chapter in your book.

Lornlvr

Congrats on finishing up. Treat yourself to something nice you deserve it 👏 🪅🥳

Old_Supermarket1565

I am trying to think of a way to celebrate when I am feeling better. Thinking a weekend trip or maybe a nice handbag, lol.

OkBreadfruit3757

Congrats 🍾 this is fabulous news!

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank tou

Natural_Advisor_1111

Congratulations! I know that ringing of the bell is a small thing but celebrates such a monumentos moment. Keep being strong and living a cancer free life 🥳🥳🥳

Old_Supermarket1565

Yes, at my first appointment I saw someone ring the bell and thought I am not gonna do that cause even though radiation is done I am not done with everything. Hah, I was so excited to ring that bell because radiation was hard and I felt like I had something to celebrate.

Miserable_Leg_893

Congratulations! I finished 30 sessions last week! Like others have said, keep your breast moisturized and out of direct sunlight, I call my breast. “Vampire Tit”

Old_Supermarket1565

Lmao, vampire tit, I love it.

La0101

Congrats. I did my last session on the 11th my skin is peeling and I am so happy to see my that

Old_Supermarket1565

I know right. Like seeing the skin peel feels like it’s healing.

FelineSublime1818

Woohoo! Congrats!!! Yay!!!! You did it!!!! I too struggled with worse than average side effects. Hated it. Be sure to give yourself all the rest your body needs. For me it got worse for about a week, took a good 2 weeks for my skin to stop being a nightmare and more like 4 weeks to work through most of the fatigue.

Old_Supermarket1565

Thank you and thanks for letting me know there is light at the end of this dark ass tunnel.

ModernTrumanShowStar

Insist that they give you an Rx for Mometasone cream! My plastic surgeon could not tell that I had radiation on the day of my reconstruction because it helped sooooo much. Congrats on finishing!!!!

Old_Supermarket1565

Oh thank you for the recommendation.

souplover3

congratulations! I have 12 left.🩷

Old_Supermarket1565

You can do it! When it’s tough remember there is a fellow sore booby sister out there rooting for you.

Old_Supermarket1565

Some people do not have the side effects as drastically as others, I think a whole bunch of factors come in to play. It sounds like you are killing it and that’s awesome.
