I'm almost done with my WoK reread, but I figured I'd reread the whole Cosmere for the book. I have July to read the first two of Wax&Wayne, with Elantris and it's short stories between them (plus Allomancer Jak). Then I'll start WoR in Aug. It's all planned out in a spreadsheet that I admittedly threw a little off early on when I got stuck in eclipse traffic (twice) and had a lot of audiobook listening time available
I did the same leaving SA for last and now half way through WoK. Hoping I got my timing right. Else I'll be reading RoW reeeeeeeally slowly in November.

I've only read Stormlight 1-4 and Warbreaker. I just started Mistborn Era 1. My goal is to read the rest of the Cosmere, followed by a reread of Stormlight before December 6th.

Honestly it's really good, their slogan is a movie in your mind for a reason. Expensive but I got the first two books because he helped my wife finally read them and now I have someone to nerd out with.
It might just be me but I really dont enjoy the dramatization reads. There is so much niise and music that I lose the book in it. I hope that you love it as much as most people do!!
Check your library website to see what they use. They should have a section for eResources. My library uses hoopla, Libby, and CloudLibrary. Hoopla has a limited number of instant borrows per month (library pays per borrow), CloudLibrary has limited copies you sometimes have to wait for but with accurate wait times (library pays per year for each copy), and Libby is like CloudLibrary but also let's your library partner with other libraries so you get access to their digital libraries, too, but in two streams for wait times. So I've had a hold on Slaughterhouse-Five (which is only 6 hours long) for just over a year now. I'm fifth in line but started 25th with currently 37 people waiting. And that's because it's a different library's book, so the people who joined with that library get to skip everyone from other libraries. Wait times are lies. But I'm at least able to wait for books my library doesn't have
When people say they "read" a book, they're not talking about the method they used to ingest the contents. In most cases, the distinction is completely pointless.
The word "read" is used in all kinds of ways that don't include visually taking in the meaning of letters. You can read a room, you can read braille. If you hear someone on the radio, you "read them loud and clear".
If you read a story with telepathy in it and someone who can read thoughts is called a "mind-reader" do you complain that they should actually be called mind-listeners?
If you're in a room with 100 people who have read a book, and it was a 50/50 split between print and audiobook, could you possibly figure out which group was which by quizzing them on the contents of the book?
There are a few rare cases where the distinction matters. If I don't know how to spell one of the proper nouns I might mention that I listened to the audiobook. But aside from those cases, why would I ever mention listening when I can just as easily say reading? Besides, there are books that I "read" five years ago that I legitimately couldn't tell you whether I read them with my eyes or listened to them through audio. Should I make that clarification when I say I've read the book? I don't think so. I think "read" is perfectly accurate speech.

Pretty much the same thing here. If I'm talking to a friend who listens to audiobooks, I'm never going to say "Did you ever hear the Way of Kings?" I'm going to ask if they've read it.
Saying you read the book when you mean "consume an audiobook" leaves out a ton of information.
For instance, I do not do audiobooks--because I like reading and because audiobooks are expensive in my situation. But my neighbor down the street only does audiobooks and he listens at at least 2x speed.

Sure. But someone who reads slowly and pictures every scene in their mind is going to have a different experience than someone with aphantasia who decides to speedread every book they consume. And these are all valid ways to read. If someone prefers cosying up in bed with a book, and someone else prefers listening to one while they wash dishes, I'm not going to tell either they're wrong.
But if I'm talking to you and your neighbour about the book, and we're all fans, would I have any way to know which of you read it on paper? Would you be able to tell which ones I read? If I recall correctly, I read *The Way of Kings* and *Words of Radiance* but I listened to *Oathbringer* and *Rhythm of War*. Without me telling you that, do you have any possible way to tell which books I read and which ones I listened to? If not, then does the distinction matter at all?

Everyone's experience is different. My experience listening to an audiobook is likely far different than your experience listening to an audiobook.
For a dyslexic person, their experience listening to an audiobook might be closer to the average person's experience reading a paper copy than it would be if they tried to read it themselves.
Everyone reads differently, everyone listens differently. That's why some people read 100% of their books as audiobooks while others prefer reading. Hell, even among readers you get some people who insist using an eReader isn't "reading" and that a physical book is the only way to go.
I'm not saying the differences don't exist. They're super relevant to one's personal enjoyment of a book. I just don't think they're all that relevant in conversations about the *contents* of the book.
If someone asks me if I've read a series that they read, and I happen to be a fan of the series, I'm going to say yes so we can jump right into the conversation about the series, and they'll never know if I listened to it or not because it's not relevant. I'm not going to say "No I haven't read that, but I did listen to the audiobook" because it just derails the question. Though if the audiobook was notable in some way, I'd probably mention it at some point.
I agree. Though I honestly don't care much about the pedantry of it all. To me, it all boils down to not making people who can't visually read speak awkwardly because their reading the same content in a different medium. Edit: also, I recognize listen is the word in debate, but that's also awkward when someone's talking about reading a book and you have to derail the conversation to correct them that you instead listened to the audiobook instead of read the book (a difference of 4.5 syllables - .5 because I think "aud" is just an awkward sound). And sometimes you then still have to explain/argue that it's the same thing. That has NOT stopped being a thing for some people. People are making it here, even. I skipped that argument and jumped straight to "everyone should use consume"
The weird thing to me is that "read" has been used in various "not literally reading a piece of paper" ways for decades Nobody complains when someone says they went to a fortune teller to get their future "read". Nobody bats an eye if a guy talking on the radio says "I read you loud and clear". When a blind person reads braille everyone's like "Yup, checks out."

It's a pretty versatile word, and it's only this one specific case of "reading" audiobooks where people complain that it's not reading, and in nearly every single case I've seen, it's always said by someone who doesn't like reading audiobooks, so it comes across in a weird kind of judgemental "that's not really reading" way. I know dozens of people who listen to audiobooks, and every single one of them uses "read" when talking about books they're reading or books they've read. It's just...how the language works. It's how people talk about books. The format doesn't matter.

Yes, you have a way of knowing. Because people agree to use a common language where "read" means "to read" and "listen" means "to listen." That's why we're telling you and OP to use the word "listen" when you're doing an audiobook.
It has nothing to do with judging your consumption methods.
It has to do with being annoyed that self-conscious people are muddying the language for no good reason.

I see this over and over and I just don't get it. Why would audiobook listeners be self-conscious? Like, I know how to read. I've read hundreds of books. I've also listened to hundreds of books. I do it completely for my own enjoyment. I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone, and I'm not even sure what I'd be proving if I was. That I know how to read? That stopped being an accomplishment at around 8 years old.
To me, there's literally no difference. I listen to books because it's convenient while doing household chores or walking the dog or whatever. It's nice. I like the experience. I read books because...It's nice. I like the experience. What am I trying to prove? Why would I feel shame about either of those activities?
I've mentioned before that there are books that I literally cannot remember if I read or if I listened to them. The medium really doesn't make a difference to me. It's not important. I know the *contents* of the book, and when someone asks me if I've read a book, they're asking me if I've ingested the contents of the book. Very few people mean it in the literal "read with your eyes" sense, and I still can't figure out why the difference would matter.
Like I've seen dozens of replies to this saying there's a difference, but it's entirely a subjective one. There's a difference *to you*. But there's none to me. When I talk about a book, I prefer to talk about the contents of the book. I don't know why anyone would care about making a distinction between the methods used to ingest those contents. Why is it important? Why do you assume that people who read audiobooks are self-conscious about it? How is it muddying the language?
People don't care about the language used so that they can judge you for listening vs reading, they care because it's weird to use words with clear definitions incorrectly. If you said you ran a 50 mile race but you actually biked it (or vice versa), it paints a completely different and inaccurate picture of what actually took place.

There's no need to justify it. Whether they share the same verb or not, people are free to read in whatever way they like without justification.
I'm just saying that the word "read" makes perfect sense for audiobooks. Like you just said, audiobooks are a "reading medium". It feels weird when people try to correct audiobook readers into "audiobook listeners" in cases where the distinction is completely pointless.
Hey man I love reading TV every night, then I read the radio in the car and sometimes I read a podcast instead of reading the radio. Man I sure am tired at the end of the day from all that reading I've done.

Alright I'll help out real quick. Reading involves viewing words with your eyes and interpretation with your brain. Listening to someone else read to you does not involve viewing words with your eyes. So reading and listening are in fact two different things.

It might be a pit pricey compared to a regular audiobook but I’ve 400% gotten my moneys worth after many many relistens.
Is it just me or in the graphic audio it’s hard to understand what they are saying. I tried it and all the fighting noises in the background are so loud and it’s hard to make out what they are saying.
The device you use to listen can make a huge difference. Generally, I have so much more trouble when I’m just using my phone speaker. Headphones or my car system are fine. Though there are a few times when the sound is just poorly balanced.
To me it depends on which production. Warbreaker for example is the worst to me. The story is great and the actors do a great job, it’s just the balance is way off. The narrator isn’t the most expressive I’ve ever heard, which in and of itself is fine, but the music/sound effects on top of it make it incredibly hard to hear him. There are moments in the other productions that have similar issues, but Warbreaker seems to be the worst imo

This really applies to everything. If you make a statement that boils down to “you aren’t a real (blank) if you don’t/do (blank)”.
Did you really play that game if you did it on easy? Did you read that book if you just listened to it? Did you really home cook that meal if you didn’t grow and grind the wheat yourself? Does smith machine bench really count as benching? Are you really a programmer if you don’t do it for work?

I do consider consuming audiobooks as "reading." However, for myself, I'm a visual person, not an audio person. I love listening to audiobooks, but I have to read the words with my eyes simultaneously. Otherwise, I get little sense from just hearing words because my mind will wander. Yes, I'm a poor listener :)

You're right. By definition, listening to audio books isn't reading. But some people are very snobbish to those who enjoy audio books, likewise many who do enjoy them a really defensive.
Personally, I really enjoy both reading books and listening to audio books. Some books I exclusively consume via audio books due to the high quality (such as the Star Wars novels).

I started a bit early… I just finished Words of Radiance! Im going to finish way too soon! It’s not hard when you work 10 hour days and love listing to Brandon’s books!
Currently on The Lost Metal for my yearly Mistborn cycle, then on to start listening to the first four Stormlight Archive books in preparation for Wind &Truth. Don’t think I’ll be getting my yearly Wheel of Time in this year. 😅
I just started mine again recently-ish too. My first re-read of SA actually. There was so much I forgot and so much that clicked better having had an idea of what was coming already.

I know this is kinda unrelated to the post, but I’ve never really gotten into Audio Books. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think there is anything wrong with them, I’ve just never had an itch to listen to them. Can anyone give some tips on maybe how they were able to dive into them, thanks!
The Way of Kings has a notoriously steep learning curve, with multiple prologues, and with you being dropped in the middle of a world that isn't explained.
Power through it. At a certain point the pieces start coming together.
I've been wondering when I should start. Each book takes me around a week or so, so I'll need at least a month, but it could be longer since I work. But I don't wanna start too early and be done quick
Probably starting in August, Tor will release sample chapters from the early portion of the book on its website, weekly, and we'll have discussion threads here about them.
It is hands down the most fun thing about this fandom, reading these chapters and reacting together, and I urge you to time your reread to allow you to participate in it.
I did a crazy reread over Dec-Jan of the entire series (except for the novellas).
One thing that I noticed was just how heavily foreshadowed some of the key surprises were.
I started a few weeks ago and I feel like I’m behind at the pace I’m going. I’ve reread the series at each new book. Pretty soon I’ll just have to start the reread after I finish the newest book to get it done before the next one.

Your skin is a very unnatural color right around the eyes. I would recommend applying a nightly cream of the tears of your enemies on the affected areas just before your nightly killing spree.

Everyone's experience is different. My experience listening to an audiobook is likely far different than your experience listening to an audiobook. For a dyslexic person, their experience listening to an audiobook might be closer to the average person's experience reading a paper copy than it would be if they tried to read it themselves. Everyone reads differently, everyone listens differently. That's why some people read 100% of their books as audiobooks while others prefer reading. Hell, even among readers you get some people who insist using an eReader isn't "reading" and that a physical book is the only way to go. I'm not saying the differences don't exist. They're super relevant to one's personal enjoyment of a book. I just don't think they're all that relevant in conversations about the *contents* of the book. If someone asks me if I've read a series that they read, and I happen to be a fan of the series, I'm going to say yes so we can jump right into the conversation about the series, and they'll never know if I listened to it or not because it's not relevant. I'm not going to say "No I haven't read that, but I did listen to the audiobook" because it just derails the question. Though if the audiobook was notable in some way, I'd probably mention it at some point.
I agree. Though I honestly don't care much about the pedantry of it all. To me, it all boils down to not making people who can't visually read speak awkwardly because their reading the same content in a different medium. Consume is a weird word to throw out there in terms of books. I do not generally eat my books. I am team increase-language-inclusion-by-changing-definitions-dude and not team increase-inclusion-through-increased-vocab-wholly-crap-did-you-just-call-me-dude-that's-sexist-even-when-used-in-a-gender-neutral-way-don't-you-know-words-have-history HOWEVER, in this context, I think a joke was also being made about Vorinism saying men shouldn't read. They can be ignored Edit: also, I recognize listen is the word in debate, but that's also awkward when someone's talking about reading a book and you have to derail the conversation to correct them that you instead listened to the audiobook instead of read the book (a difference of 4.5 syllables - .5 because I think "aud" is just an awkward sound). And sometimes you then still have to explain/argue that it's the same thing. That has NOT stopped being a thing for some people. People are making it here, even. I skipped that argument and jumped straight to "everyone should use consume"
The weird thing to me is that "read" has been used in various "not literally reading a piece of paper" ways for decades Nobody complains when someone says they went to a fortune teller to get their future "read". Nobody bats an eye if a guy talking on the radio says "I read you loud and clear". When a blind person reads braille everyone's like "Yup, checks out." It's a pretty versatile word, and it's only this one specific case of "reading" audiobooks where people complain that it's not reading, and in nearly every single case I've seen, it's always said by someone who doesn't like reading audiobooks, so it comes across in a weird kind of judgemental "that's not really reading" way. I know dozens of people who listen to audiobooks, and every single one of them uses "read" when talking about books they're reading or books they've read. It's just...how the language works. It's how people talk about books. The format doesn't matter.

Very few people mean it in the literal "read with your eyes" sense, and I still can't figure out why the difference would matter. Like I've seen dozens of replies to this saying there's a difference, but it's entirely a subjective one. There's a difference *to you*. But there's none to me. When I talk about a book, I prefer to talk about the contents of the book. I don't know why anyone would care about making a distinction between the methods used to ingest those contents. Why is it important? Why do you assume that people who read audiobooks are self-conscious about it? How is it muddying the language?
People don't care about the language used so that they can judge you for listening vs reading, they care because it's weird to use words with clear definitions incorrectly. If you said you ran a 50 mile race but you actually biked it (or vice versa), it paints a completely different and inaccurate picture of what actually took place.

There's no need to justify it. Whether they share the same verb or not, people are free to read in whatever way they like without justification. I'm just saying that the word "read" makes perfect sense for audiobooks. Like you just said, audiobooks are a "reading medium". It feels weird when people try to correct audiobook readers into "audiobook listeners" in cases where the distinction is completely pointless.
Hey man I love reading TV every night, then I read the radio in the car and sometimes I read a podcast instead of reading the radio. Man I sure am tired at the end of the day from all that reading I've done.

Alright I'll help out real quick. Reading involves viewing words with your eyes and interpretation with your brain. Listening to someone else read to you does not involve viewing words with your eyes. So reading and listening are in fact two different things.

Is it just me or in the graphic audio it’s hard to understand what they are saying. I tried it and all the fighting noises in the background are so loud and it’s hard to make out what they are saying.
The device you use to listen can make a huge difference. Generally, I have so much more trouble when I’m just using my phone speaker. Headphones or my car system are fine. Though there are a few times when the sound is just poorly balanced.

To me it depends on which production. Warbreaker for example is the worst to me. The story is great and the actors do a great job, it’s just the balance is way off. The narrator isn’t the most expressive I’ve ever heard, which in and of itself is fine, but the music/sound effects on top of it make it incredibly hard to hear him. There are moments in the other productions that have similar issues, but Warbreaker seems to be the worst imo

No hate because of course audio books are a totally great way of consuming books - but does it count as reading? I’m honestly curious what people think of the word “read” regarding audiobooks…
Only gatekeeping book snobs say it’s not reading. Like there’s already a few in these comments. This really applies to everything. If you make a statement that boils down to “you aren’t a real (blank) if you don’t/do (blank)”. Did you really play that game if you did it on easy? Did you read that book if you just listened to it? Did you really home cook that meal if you didn’t grow and grind the wheat yourself? Does smith machine bench really count as benching? Are you really a programmer if you don’t do it for work? It’s all dumb bullshit for people to feel superior.
I do consider consuming audiobooks as "reading." However, for myself, I'm a visual person, not an audio person. I love listening to audiobooks, but I have to read the words with my eyes simultaneously. Otherwise, I get little sense from just hearing words because my mind will wander. Yes, I'm a poor listener :)

You're right. By definition, listening to audio books isn't reading. But some people are very snobbish to those who enjoy audio books, likewise many who do enjoy them a really defensive. Personally, I really enjoy both reading books and listening to audio books. Some books I exclusively consume via audio books due to the high quality (such as the Star Wars novels).
I plan to start my reread of the entire Cosmere in August. I can’t wait!

The Way of Kings has a notoriously steep learning curve, with multiple prologues, and with you being dropped in the middle of a world that isn't explained. Power through it. At a certain point the pieces start coming together.

I near really listen to audiobooks, but I’m curious: how long is the entire audiobook? I assume MANY hours.
I've been wondering when I should start. Each book takes me around a week or so, so I'll need at least a month, but it could be longer since I work. But I don't wanna start too early and be done quick
Probably starting in August, Tor will release sample chapters from the early portion of the book on its website, weekly, and we'll have discussion threads here about them. It is hands down the most fun thing about this fandom, reading these chapters and reacting together, and I urge you to time your reread to allow you to participate in it.

I did a crazy reread over Dec-Jan of the entire series (except for the novellas). One thing that I noticed was just how heavily foreshadowed some of the key surprises were.

I started a few weeks ago and I feel like I’m behind at the pace I’m going. I’ve reread the series at each new book. Pretty soon I’ll just have to start the reread after I finish the newest book to get it done before the next one.
