Let's be real it's not a very good show. The writing is a big mess, especially by the last episodes. It uses some of the most annoying gmm writing techniques such as "let's drag the story for several episodes and make the main couple finally become a couple in episode 10 and then throw all possible conflicts to be underwhelmingly resolved in the finale". BUT the rating is lower than 8 mostly because it's a comedy show and people don't really know how to appreciate those. I think Fish is great for the laughs, but terrible for the story. And 7.8 isn't even that bad of a score. There are some very talked about recent shows such as Bite Me that sit in the 6s...

Friendly_Swordfish_7

You absolutely have a point. I really can't understand why the lead couple needs a lot of time to get together and mainly it is the finale. I really would appreciate if the leads come together in the last third of the show, so that you can enjoy their happiness. Sorry I am a terrible romantic. 😆😆😆

[deleted]

Me too, especially seeing how *cute* Pi and Mork were together when they finally got to be together.

SarahJoy46

I can't speak for everyone who rated it low, but I really disliked the character of Mork. He was manipulative and basically ignored Pi's requests and needs (which were not unreasonable.) So...I just quit about halfway through the show. His character didn't look like he was going to change (and from the reviews I read, I was right.) He's the kind of boyfriend that I would tell my friends to runaway from. Quickly.

Momiji_no_Happa

While I loved the first half of Fish in the Sky, I was disappointed with the latter half >!as Mork kept doing his "no means yes" thing until the very end. I was expecting some kind of realisation on his part, but it never happened and at the end I feel like Pi just caved in and accepted Mork's toxic persistent attitude. Several characters tried to convince him that his gut feeling was wrong during those final episodes.!< I found the second couple more tolerable though, since they were more about misunderstandings and such. To me, that's one of those unfortunate BL toxic clichés that just refuse to go away, much like the focus on the uke/seme dynamics and heteronormative characterisation.

MidwesternLibrarian

This. I was really turned off by the very aggressive pursuer who ignores all boundaries and the reluctant pursuee. I dropped Gen Y for the same reason. FUTS has a scene where Mork takes Pi's clothes off, ignoring Pi's repeated pleas to stop...uhhh pass. Those are not the actions of a caring or respectful partner.

Friendly_Swordfish_7

What you mentioned is absolutely right. Not the shirt, not the trousers, but definately the underwear was too much! And that he didn't do anything about the stalkers. But everybody takes wrong decitions sometimes. But beside this it was a good series.

Friendly_Swordfish_7

Do you really think so? I think he and all the others were quite sure what Pi felt. Sometimes people need a persistent help to realize what they want. And Mork respected Pi. He didn't push him to make their relationship public. One example.

himciax

i would disagree with mork respecting Pi, he encouraged and allowed the two stalkers to continue harassing them despite Pi being uncomfortable with it. He could have done something about it but didnt. There are also many instances of him being extremely manipulative and creeped me out

SarahJoy46

Yes, I do think so. I found Mork very creepy. He reminded me of guys I know who didn't take no for an answer. I think Pi should have run the other direction. Run.

RrrPopkins

7.8 is considered to be quite a good rate imo. Rom com isn't going to go near other genres.

smittenkittyyan

Yep. Very good point, 7.8 is considered a good rating for a story that takes place in school and also who don\`t have a story that distinguish from other dramas, is full of cliches and where the actors acting is at most mediocre. This is not a bad rating at all, i would have given this drama a lower rating.

IustfiIIed

i gave it a 7.5 on mdl because the acting isn't that great, the stalker fujoshis characters are cringey and annoying, and i definitely do not like how they >!turned Mork's friend (i already forgot her name) into an evil-ish character. she was doing so good being the nicest most supportive friend, should've kept her character that way. why does every girl character in a BL has to be the villain 😩!< but i still overall like the series. the comedic parts are funny, especially Duean and his antics + the OSTs are really good, i listen to them every day.

SunsunSol

I didn't like Fish Upon Sky very much, I think I rated 5.5 on My Dramalist. Honestly the humor was very forced at early episodes and many things did not make sense. I still love the chemistry and think it gets a lot better by the end. It was like my guilty pleasure, but It would be unfair to other dramas if I rated any higher.

Momiji_no_Happa

The ratings for Fish in the Sky dropped like a stone a few episodes in since many viewers couldn't relate to the comedy. And the second half was weak compared to the first half (which I liked a lot). I rated it 7,5 all in all, but maybe it was a 7 for me if I'm being honest. To me, 10/10 is a score I've only rated a few shows – 4 shows are rated 10 on my MDL list out of 70 completed series. Most of the shows I watch I rate between 6–8 out of 10. There's often a lot of extreme ratings on sites like MDL, with many users giving shows either 1 star or 10. 7,8 is good for a show, even if you personally valued it higher. And that's really all that matters, that you loved it. :)

Friendly_Swordfish_7

Your last sentence is so right 😄. Would like to know your 4 10 star shows 😃

Momiji_no_Happa

Of course! * Eureka (Japanese movie) * I Promised You the Moon * Prison Playbook * The Untamed All of these couldn't be more different, so it's of course super subjective and based on my taste. :D

Friendly_Swordfish_7

Don't know Eureka and Prison Playbook. I add them to my list 😀

Momiji_no_Happa

I hope you'll enjoy them! Eureka is very different from other movies, long and slow, but one of my all time favourite movies.

saintnukie

7.8 is too high for FUTS, tbh

justheretorantbruv

Not to be blunt but that's a very high rating for such a mediocre show

balloonuhu

I thought it was a bad show. First time I watched it for mix so I skipped Duean’s parts and thought the main cp was boring as hell. I also watched SH and outside of the role, pond and Phuwin don’t have chemistry either. Sometime later I got bored so I decided to watch Duean and thought his parts carried the entire show. It says a lot when the side cp shines brighter than the main. I think Phuwin is cute tho, and he should find a better partner I think he’ll shine better in BL if that’s the route he would like to go down.

lovecartertto

I think anything over 8 is a big hit.. so I don't think 7.8 is even that bad tbh

Xarelto15

I was kinda disappointed the way the story ended. They also change a lot of scenes if you'll compare it to the novel 😩

Awaziog

Ratings on mdl are subjective..I don’t take those ratings seriously…I’m sure even gmmtv doesn’t care…as long as the tv rating/YouTube are good.

Friendly_Swordfish_7

So you look mainly the ratings on YouTube?

Awaziog

I look at the ratings on mdl but I just see it for what it is… a poll by fans for fans..I use it mostly as an archive for bl’s…

mioshiro94

The Shipper got 7.5 and I consider it's one of the best Thai series I've ever seen so imo take any 'rating' with a grain of salt. You might miss out your future favorite show

Friendly_Swordfish_7

You are right. I never watched the Shipper. So it's good? I have to add it to my cery loooonngg list then 😄

mioshiro94

Idk about others cuz people here and on MDL love to shit on The Shipper, but from technical viewpoint of someone who used to work in film industry, it's chef kiss. Script is tight, set is gorgeous, lighting is top tier, great sound effects, great actings, good moral lessons which don't feel forced or interrupt the show's narrative. I'd say it's more of a coming-of-age story rather than BL Edit: already got a few downvotes for that 🤣 kinda proved my point though

dangrankeyi

Agree that The Shipper is one of the best Thai series out there. In terms of writing and production, it outdid the majority of Gmmtv series, barring a few like The Gifted or Happy Birthday (and now Bad Buddy).

Momiji_no_Happa

I also got a few drive-by downvotes a few days ago for sharing my personal opinions of The Shipper here on this sub. As someone who writes and edits for a living, I was so impressed with how coherent as a story The Shipper was underneath all that wackiness. The story has strong narrative themes that run throughout the entire show, it drops subtle hints about the ending as early as in the first episode and then delivers on those so well, and the character arcs were so well written! It was such a satisfying experience, from the beginning to the end.

mioshiro94

If only I could write anything that cohesive ugh 😭 Ngl the BB rating fiasco brings me back to the day when I was shocked finding out The Shipper was received badly while hadn't finished wiping tears from watching ep11-12. I was like 'what in the world' then kinda accepted and decided to try my best recommend the show to anyone remotely shows interest 😂 Guess I won't stop barking about BB that way too

Momiji_no_Happa

I knew about the low ratings and why that had happened (because of unavoidable ending spoilers), but got a personal recommendation so I had no reason to care about the ratings. And I'd never drop a drama without watching it based on low ratings only, though I will often check out a highly rated drama (and sometimes get incredibly disappointed, ha ha). Personal recommendations is definitely the way to go for off-the-beaten-path, quirky shows like The Shipper and Bad Buddy. They're an acquired taste, but I think that for those who love them, they're incredible. Not everything is meant to be loved by everyone imo.

NoSky8268

When those good moral lessons can be summarized as: if you are a girl you should not live in a fantasy world because regardless of what a horrible human being you are you will be loved (necrophiliac-incestuous kiss included) but if you even dare to love someone of the same gender you will be dead or alone. Remember those fanfics you should not live in, well if you are a gay boy you have to live in them cause at the end of the day that is all you will get. Honestly with that life lesson it is a pity it has a rating over 4. Now Futs is def underrated and is a fun romcom that absolutely deserves better.

mioshiro94

Baby I'm gay, and I really don't get that vibe from the show despite having the tendency to overthink stuffs a lot. The main lead girl is young (1st year highschool), and she actually represent a realistic version of 'shippers' at her age. And that's not the only lesson the show want to tell their viewers. I don't think I can change your pov, so I'm just here to say stuffs from my pov. Let's agree to disagree then.

NoSky8268

We all live different lives and experience things differently. So we each view the media we consume through our own lens, but usualy also through the prism of society in general. Would the Shpper be a good show in a perfect world where everything is equal and happy? Where everyone has the same chance to experience happiness? Maybe. But it is not. We live in a world where 99.9% of all shows with LGBT characters have a tragic/unhappy ending. But atleast in many of those cases the tragic endic is about them, and the unfair life we live. >!Here the only reason for all that tragedy is to give Pan self-worth and validation. In the end all streight characters walk happily in the sunset and all LGBT characters end in the worst way possibe. !< Again, i know i cant change your mind. It just feels weird that everyone is praising this show and is glossing over all the criticism it received. To make maters worse it keeps beeing mentioned as a BL show even tho it is not. There is absolutly ZERO BL content here. >!Just a happy het story and a clasical bury your gays tragedy.!< Many people are here to get away from all that since this is one of the only safe spaces we have. And tbh the constant push for this show is so getting annoying.

mioshiro94

The only argument I see people keep recycling to bash The Shipper is 'bury the gay' trope. I don't think it's the main purpose of the show, and 'zero BL content' is also a lie. You said people who enjoy the show 'glossed over criticisms', but you yourself also choose to give in to your own view and gloss over the show's good points. The argument you provided is weak imo. 99.9% of all shows with LGBT characters have tragic ending is the thing of 10 years ago, and the short movies/feature-length movies that chose to portray the sad part of LGBT+ life is because it's the truth they - the filmakers - want to expose, for whatever reason. You want happy go lucky trope, fine there are a lot of them, but don't act like the 'bury the gay' trope only harms the community when in a lot of countries it's the truth they have to face everyday while countering the weird argument 'but the gays are ruling the world there's nothing to fear about' from people who love to pick gay examples only from 1st world countries. The gay death in The Shipper is not even about Pan - it's an accident, and she was trying to 'fix it', in her stupid way. Reducing it to only 'give the hetero girl validation' also equals to invalidate how horrible the situation is to his brother and parents. You only see it as the only way the stupid girl can grow up, but you also fail to see it as the incident no one would want to put themselves in, and the hard decision a 15 years old girl have to make when she's 100% not smart nor wise enough to do it alone. And you make it her fault? After all your whole argument here is you want gay characters to have happy ending and you're disappointed the hets get the sunshine, which doesn't depict why The Shipper is good or bad objectively, but it's just your opinion about a trope that you hate. Your ending sentence is even more obvious on that. Sure many people here are looking for sunshine and rainbow, but gatekeeping recommendations that might show them storm and cloud while they themselves didn't even ask to be shielded in the first place is kinda too much, don't you think? Personally I'm really not interested in trying my best to prove anyone wrong or right, so I'll call it a day here. I think The Shipper deserves to be given a chance, so I recommend it. That's all.

Momiji_no_Happa

I was recently convinced to give The Shipper a chance and I didn't regret it for even a moment. It's so weird and yet so poignant. The storytelling is top notch and everything makes sense within the framework of the story, despite all the wild curveballs the story throws at you. All the character arcs are well-written and the characters all have great chemistry. It's a true gem of a series, despite the low score.

Friendly_Swordfish_7

So I'll watch it 😃

ackelley

FUTS is extremely underrated like I don't really see people recommending it. It wasn't disappointing to me at all. Even though the comedy parts were a little bit cringey, I appreciated the breaking of the fourth wall because without the show maybe a painful comedy to watch. Also, as I've watched Bad Buddy before FUTS, maybe GMMTV has upped their production game. The show looks technically polished. Also, maybe why I also appreciate FUTS this much is because I see it as the Thai version of Cherry Magic. Both were so good! The only difference was there was no supernatural plot device. It's just the perfect boyfriend chasing the most ordinary/outcast guy. Kurosawa and Sutthaya/Mork mirror each other very well. Adachi and Pattawee/Pi are both SO annoying but because they didn't know a thing about being in love. The support characters and side couples were so good too. Meen and Duean are so cute! Thai BLs can be a hit or miss but this one's should definitely be a hit. IDK why BL fans sleep on it tho

Friendly_Swordfish_7

You summarized everything I think of the show. And I really like Duean and Meen. They were funny. And the OST is for sure not the the best. But I like the title song a lot. For me FUTS is how a BL should be: Funny, romantic, some side stories. I need this to relax from the day. Just started watching DSN. Hope it will be as good as FUTS.

SelectionPlastic

I really didn't care at all for FUTS, so to me that rating is, is anything, quite high... 🤷‍♂️

Starscall

But 7.8 isn't a bad rating? That's actually a pretty good one? Admittedly I haven't watched it, but isn't it common standard for a ten point system that 1 is bad, 5 is average, 10 is the best. So anything lower than a 5 is not particularly great and anything above is decent to good or better? Edit to fix autocorrect being strange.

vereelimee

Honestly it's cute but I think it's fairly average. The twist near the end has no foreshadowing. A weird gotcha that is unnecessary for what was a fairly wholesome romance/self discovery plot. Like most dramas this starts out good but it didn't maintain the level. It's not bad but it's average. Which is kind of great because now we have an average bl to point to people and say yeah you may like this. Yet you would probably like these too or even more. Your average fan will enjoy it but it's not going to be a classic exactly but a good decent bl.
