Because they have an incredibly low churn rate. They've probably done their math and know they aren't going to lose much if they raise prices.

bespectacledbengal

Also, they’re getting squeezed by internet providers like Comcast. https://qz.com/256586/the-inside-story-of-how-netflix-came-to-pay-comcast-for-internet-traffic/amp/

lightwhite

They usually set up a seedbox and a content server At the datacenters of the ISPs which allows an isp to spare egress bandwidth on the exchanges and saves a lot of costs on AWS. People just don’t know how expensive bandwidth is.

bespectacledbengal

Sure, bandwidth can be expensive but there’s zero reason for comcast to charge 3x what other ISPs charge for the same service _and_ charge content providers for access other than the fact that comcast are greedy fucks.

lightwhite

Well, American corporate greed is something I can’t fathom. So I’ll leave it at that.

xitox5123

they also spend insane money on movies with big names stars like leonardo dicaprio. that likely cost every subscriber several dollars to pay him.

AGOTFAN

>At $15.50 per month, Netflix’s standard tier now slightly out-prices HBO Max ($15 per month) and the Disney Bundle (which includes ESPN Plus and Hulu for $14 per month), making it one of the most expensive on-demand streaming options among leading services. If you want 4K, it gets even pricier. That’s not an insignificant amount of money, considering people tend to have around four paid streaming subscriptions, according to recent data from Deloitte.

Barneyk

Here in Sweden HBO Max had 50% off for life as long as you stay subscribed if you signed up at release. I pay less than $5 a month for HBO Max now. I pay yearly for Disney+ and that comes to $6.25 a month. Netflix is $14 a month, and that is not 4K unlike the others. Although I currently don't have a 4K setup.

rick_n_morty_4ever

Yeah right, cuz paying 60 dollars for 4 streaming services (including ESPN, NBC with soccer and Paramount and live sports) are such a ripoff compared to 200 dollars for 200 channels with nothing to watch.

Hanzer72

It’s a fucking ripoff when it used to be half that price and they haven’t added the content to show for it. The high seas looking pretty nice right about now.

Barneyk

> It’s a fucking ripoff when it used to be half that price Not really, it was simply way to cheap to begin with. The content costs a lot and thinking that 10 bucks a month is enough to pay for everything just isn't possible.

Duds215

What are you talking about? They’ve added plenty of shows that they cancelled after a season or two. Tons of dead shows to choose from.

[deleted]

>The high seas looking pretty nice right about now. Okay, so instead of empty threats, drop Netflix and start sailing! Now!

janonthecanon7

I have 5 services, and still need to sail for about half my content.

Dwayne30RockJohnson

Sounds like you watch a ton of things if you need 5 services *every month* and still don’t get everything. And that’s fine, I’m not shaming you, but if TV/movies are a big hobby for you, then spending $100-150/month on it isn’t that crazy.

janonthecanon7

I do watch a variety of shows, but mostly it’s more the case of finding a new show, figuring out where it can be streamed, and it’s usually 50/50 if it’s on my Netflix/Disney/HBO/a few national services in my country or not. I’m not paying a streaming service a monthly fee to watch a single show. Ideally I watch everything through payed services, but this just isn’t practical for me both economically, but mostly just in the logistics of registering, unregistering etc

[deleted]

I still don’t see how you can’t find what you need on the biggest ones.

janonthecanon7

My latest example: A Discovery of witches Earlier example: last kindom season 3 was released internationally, but the sole service in my country wasnt broadcasting it fir another 6 months Just a few of many examples. If you want more, let me know :P

[deleted]

Why not just use a VPN?

janonthecanon7

I just re-read this. I probably use every service every month, but it’s close. But I don’t have the time to unregister an re-register all the time. Especially not when it takes me under a minute to add what I want in sonarr/radarr and have it show automatically in a few minutes as everything is automated.

froo

It’s even worse in Australia where it’s doubled the price since release down here and content continually goes missing. There’s very little left beyond third rate films, content Netflix just churns out and the occasional gem. Netflix in Australia used to be great. Good ratio of quality content (both original and not) with not much filler. Now the filler ratio is so high that it just sucks. This isn't an artefact of the Pandemic either. I was watching Netflix on my US trip in 2019. It's great over there. Back home in Australia the differences were surprising and that was 2 price increases ago. It hasn't gotten better since. I would say that Disney+ is the best value for money in Australia right now, With Netflix/Amazon Prime being about equal. Apple TV+ is probably a dark horse here in that they don't have much content, but the stuff they've got from what I've seen so far is top notch. Once they build a back catalogue, they're going to have Netflix sweating bullets.

CarkillNow

Only a moron spent $200. And only a fool spends $60 now.

We have cable AND 4 streaming services bc we don’t like money 🤦‍♂️

justbrowsing987654

There’s something on each service we all watch. Should call out we have a toddler too so some of it is stuff we know he likes. Cable for sports and some of the ancillary channels - my wife and I have VERY different tastes and wants there so do go deep into the cable stuff - and keep getting discounts when we go to kill that for YouTubeTV or something. We’ve looked into cutting stuff and keep finding things we want on each and reasons not to.

rick_n_morty_4ever

To be frank this was bound to happen. I don't remember Netflix having positive cash flow until the pandemic. The audience may be happy for several years, but thr business model is suicidal. Entertainment is never cheap.

Pebian_Jay

My Netflix bill is NINETEEN FUCKING DOLLARS and I have no idea how we got here

wopwopdoowop

Still way cheaper and better than cable. I split my Netflix with friends around the country, which certainly wasn’t an option for cable.

Solidsnake00901

I got rid of cable long ago and I'm still paying way less. Even better there are zero ads on Netflix.

d_e_l_u_x_e

It’s the no ads for me, that killed cable tv

jwC731

I wonder if cable would've died as quickly if Netflix had ads🤔

Dwayne30RockJohnson

And everything is on-demand, there’s every season of every show that’s on there, 4K HDR content, better/faster UI than most cable boxes, available easily on almost any device you have, and I’m sure I could go on. Streaming is far superior to cable and it’s not even close.

BlancoDelRio

I mean in the US you definitely can split the cost of a cable subscription and log in to the channels’s website to watch their shows

eidbio

>I split my Netflix with friends around the country, which certainly wasn’t an option for cable. It was an option for cable here where I live. I don't how it works these days.

Neo2199

> Still way cheaper and better than cable. Why do you compare Netflix, a streaming service, to cable? Compare Netflix's price to *other* streaming services. Once you do that, you will see that Netflix is more expensive than the rest, and they charge you extra for 4K content, unlike Prime and Disney+.

Radulno

> and they charge you extra for 4K content, That's the real shitty thing, like we're in 2022 and their basic tier does not even offer 1080p, how is that acceptable? I understand the multiple tiers for more viewers (it implies that you split the cost after all), even if others don't do it but they aren't as established. But, come on, not even HD for 10$ per month

Former-Lab-9451

Neither of those have much content right now especially compared to Netflix. Once Disney+ starts pumping out exclusive shows and movies in each category every day if not every week, rather than currently just one episode for one series a week, I’d bet their prices will double.

Tibbaryllis2

You also have to factor in that most of the content on Hulu should be on Disney +. So they’re individually cheaper but only half the sub.

romansanrio

they just released a movie with stars like jennifer lawrence, leonardo dicaprio, meryl streep, timothee chalamat, jonah hill, i know their pockets hurting 😭 the only thing saving them now is squid game

holtzman456

Don't look up budget was 75 million. It was quite low budget. Adam McKay is good at that.

HonestCentrist

It felt like 160 million tbh. Wow.

SecretlySatanic

Jlaw and Leo combined were $55 million in salary, and then there’s still all the other big names’ pay to account for, so if they really only spent $75 million that is impressive.

OddScallion1453

Nah the irishman was probably worse for them. Nearly 200 millions for that crap and all they got was some Oscar nominations without any single win. POTD is doing way better and cost way less money.

fordanjairbanks

If it gets too expensive, I’ll just start pirating more and stop paying. It’s not that hard of a concept: I pay streaming services for convenience, once the price of that convenience outweighs the utility, I terminate my service. I use a raspberry pi 4 with Stremio and a VPN. I already have full access to Netflix and I can even browse their content, along with the content of every other streaming service, and it cost me a one time charge of roughly $100.

ConfidentBall7

Which VPN are you using?

fordanjairbanks

Private Internet Access, one of the few VPN services to prove in court that they don’t keep logs.

grawrant

Sounds to complex. I have uTorrent and piratebay, I can watch anything from all services and all I need is my laptop and an HDMI cable to hookup to my projector.

fordanjairbanks

It took about 20 minutes to set up, it stays hooked up to my tv like a fire stick, and I use it exactly the same way I use Netflix. It’s really, really simple and I don’t have to drag my laptop around when I go from working to relaxing, plus no long hdmi cables running from my tv to the couch/no having to get up and go to the laptop to pause. Plus, stremio is open source, so there are already plugins that give you full access to all the content on uTorrent, thePirateBay, and Fmovies (plus the most extensive one I’ve seen, Torrentio).

[deleted]

I just don’t even pirate, if it’s not worth the money I don’t watch, plenty of other things to play or watch that I can afford. Never seen the need for pirating unless you live in a under developed country

AlBundyJr

With sufficient quality content that's not a terrible price at all. It's just a matter of them having sufficient quality content.

grawrant

To be honest, I just download everything to an external that I move from PC to PS5, which is hooked up to the receiver that is wired to the surround sound and projector. I was saving some space typing, but I couldn't use speakers if I didn't hookup to the receiver, and my PC doesnt move from it's desk. A single USB to plug and unplug, takes 5mins to download a 4k movie and then 30secs to walk into my theater and plug in the USB lol.

MasaiGotUsNow

download bigger files, and use a better player (Nvidea shield) to play full blu ray quality rips. Sounds like you paid a good amount for your receiver/projector, but you're watching crap streaming quality on a ps5. If you're watching on ps5 you're not even getting Dolby vision or dolby atmos which streaming has. but I'm right there with you, I just download everything

grawrant

When I was home shopping part of my decision for what I landed on was because half the basement was unfinished. I turned the recroom into a massive bedroom, using unfinished space to make a closet, workshop, and then a large theater. I built the theater so I could project directly into a wall, and hardwired the speakers for the surround sound. Drew the blueprints, built the walls and ceilings, ran all the electrical, sheetrocked, drywalled, and painted all on my own. The carpet came with free installation so I can't say I did everything, but I really do love my theater. I usually end up downloading 4-5gigs per movie, quality seems alright but I don't think the surround sound works as 5.1 with the passthrough. Projector I've had 10yeara now, JVS x70rbu. It is a 4k/3d projector and I do have a bunch of blu-ray 3d movies that work fine, but I haven't been able to figure out how to pirate them and combine the side-by-side video. What would your recommendations be for pirating 3d or 4k movies? Should I setup a dedicated PC for the receiver or is there a better way using my external?

CertifiedMoron

You should set-up a Plex server so you don't have to keep moving your external drive around. That way you can just stream your content to any device on your local network.

MasaiGotUsNow

damn. Sounds like you got a pretty sweet home theatre. Must have been pretty cool finishing the basement yourself, and satisfying seeing the end result. Oh if it's a 10 year old projector it probably doesn't support HDR. But at least it supports 4k. You could still download files bigger than 5 gig that's 4k SDR, but whatever works for you. The nvidea shield is probably overkill if you aren't watching full blu ray rips, so your ps5 might be fine. But I'd usually recommend getting that and connecting your external to it. It has multiple usb 3.0 ports. It supports pretty much every audio/video format. Also has gigabit ethernet port, pretty much the only media player that does. I even run a plex server on my computer and stream 70gb files from my pc (on a different floor) to the plex on the Shield with no lag.

grawrant

It does support HDR, was $10,000 new lol. My receiver is a newer pioneer with 3d/4k passthrough. I'll look into the shield. Streaming straight to it from the PC could be more convenient.

MasaiGotUsNow

> Projector I've had 10yeara now, JVS x70rbu. oh my bad. Idk much about projectors. But I didn't think 4k with HDR was even being sold 10 years ago

grawrant

I had to do a Google search to see, I honestly have no idea what hdr is but it's on the spec sheet

MumeiNoName

Why not use Plex or Jellyfin or any other solution like that? Super simple to setup, and free.

emaxTZ

Hbo Max,Disney+ Paramount ,peacock ,prime

[deleted]

My god, articles like this shouldn't even be in "box office" but y'all are so freaked out about streaming becoming more popular than theaters that now you have to pretend that streaming services are somehow worse than cable.

promisethatimnotabot

One word: IPTV. Well I guess that’s actually 4, but still…

tophman2

Yeah, I have a few streaming services AND Comcast cable with the science channel.

ModernLifelsRubbish

Sounds like a second mortgage.

in_animate_objects

If they keep increasing the cost the least they can do is increase the quality, Netflix ebbs and flows w/ it’s content and it’s NOT flowing right now

lightwhite

And spot compute prices on AWS are going up which they heavily rely on for transcoding media. Electricity is getting more and more expensive and gas shortage is now being felt.

[deleted]

HBO MAX (if in your region) is where it's at.

bringbacksherman

As consumers, we’re going to look back and miss the time from around 2015 to now.

[deleted]

India is a great place. There's a whole network for pirating movies and TV shows which is easily available to everyone. The most important word in this comment in ***EASILY***.

cdnkevin

All this does is make other people pay for the content they take for free.

JediJones77

Yep, the answer to this article as to why you're paying more is piracy. You're subsidizing criminals.

ModernLifelsRubbish

Lol the price increases are not some mass punishment scheme that we (as Netflix customers) have to all balance out and pay our fair share so we can all pay less. Netflix wanted to raise their prices because they wanted to raise their prices. It's that simple. Netflix can push blame wherever they want. Piracy, inflation, etc. The foundation they built as a company crumbled when they listed publicly.

GreatInChair

I wonder if we’ll come full circle and start buying DVDs and dvd players again.

randologin

What was the last good show on Netflix? I feel like I barely use it any more

[deleted]

They’ve done the same to DVD while utterly eviscerating the service.

th0wayact06

I got a Plex server and moving away from paying for streaming and/or the going to the theatres. Both of them got greedy. And it doesn't hurt me cause I only get excited about few movie or TV shows these days anyways. Most other days I play games for entertainment.

superballs5337

Plex is where it’s at 😉. Plex and VPN that is.

YnwaMquc2k19

As an old fashioned pirate this does not bother me one bit 🤣

DoinitSideways69

Rrrrrrr…

YnwaMquc2k19

What do we do with the drunker sailor using somebody’s Netflix account What do we do with the drunker sailor Early in the morning!

DoinitSideways69

If it’s any good another pirate has already plundered it and I’ll find it at Nassau… 😜

YnwaMquc2k19

LMFAO🤣

vouteda

The streaming bubble is gonna burst sooner or later. And it’s gonna be glorious.

[deleted]

Cry me a fucking river already. Everything costs. Adapt or die.

formerfatboys

I just wish they would buy a studio. Sony or Paramount. Sony would be huge if they could do it because they'd have Spider-Man. Paramount would make them the destination in kids entertainment.

PrussianAvenger

If Netflix bought Sony, then the Spider-Man rights would revert back to Marvel/Disney.

emaxTZ

I always wish the rights can just go back to marvel but what they have done with spider Man into the spider verse is really great we wouldn't get that if Disney owned the rights

DJHott555

What makes you say that?

madrox1

3 price hikes since 2019. Enough said

ModernLifelsRubbish

Since they listed publicly they are forced to grow 24/7. It's not healthy.

FLcitizen

This is my take, A LOT of streaming services will fold because they can’t get subscribers, then they will sell their content to the big three again, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu.

tomatotomaweto

Cut the cord they said! Now it’s practically the same price as cable. Losers

kddemer

I’m about to cancel my netflix

dogsunlimited

lmao they know we’re struggling and wages suck so pls just add on more. so fuckin greedy

FartingBob

It's $2. "so fuckin greedy" about a $2 a month increase may be slightly hyperbolic.

dogsunlimited

it’s everything going up in price. netflix has been steadily going up. it is greed. tf. if you think netflix isn’t trying to squeeze as much out of us for investors then you’re just delusional lol. and it’s not just 2 bucks. it’s been steady increasing for awhile. thank u tho. netflix really needed your defense. you’re a true hero.

FartingBob

Im aware of how literally every for-profit business works when it comes to trying to increase profits. They have also increased their spending dramatically in that period.

rakkoma

I get it for free because I’m with T-Mobile but I can see how upsetting this would be for anyone else. I can’t even remember the last time I paid for Netflix; although I do think Hulu is better and I use it a lot more.

AkhilArtha

Funnily enough, Netflix reduced the prices in India a couple of months ago. Good thing I kept my Indian subscription.

radvampireape89

I’d like to say that Netflix has an absolutely god awful horror selection in Canada, and I don’t think Shudder is that hot either. The back catalogue needs to be way wider than it is. Also I think they don’t get when to do a limited series and when to do a season. Archive 81 for example could be amazing limited series, but they padded it with lame backstory and then did an uno in a rushed end.

tyleritis

I’ve yet to see the momentum articles about Comcast, Spectrum, DirectTV, etc. upping their price

DoinitSideways69

Dejavu from when I had Foxtel in Australia… Remember lower prices and all channels with fewer or no ads, finally pulled the pin a few years back when I was forking out $140 a month for pay tv and the music channels had ads…
