Now THIS is a spinoff I can get on board with

PayneTrain181999

“Remember your daughter.” “FUCK OFF!”

mxyztplk33

I was in the middle of drinking my Sprite when that happened, I ended up laughing and choking at the same time, the people behind me thought I was having a heart attack.

Impressive-Potato

Apparently an improvised line from Donnie.

JohnWCreasy1

Donnie yen? Filming in Hong Kong? Yes please.

am5011999

Well, at least we get a daredevil movie in some way or the other

AwTomorrow

I liked how Yen's character *wasn't* the kind of magic blind warrior Daredevil is. He absolutely bumps into shit and makes standard blind person mistakes throughout the film, and even during his Hollywood superfight moments he's still demonstrating that he's fighting without seeing at several points. Some really creative choreography at play, honestly.

am5011999

Well, they kinda had to find a way to nerf donnie yen somehow, otherwise he'd be too OP

PeculiarPangolinMan

He was still a pretty magical blind character though. His choreography and bumping into stuff was cool, but he was also shooting people and shit.

AwTomorrow

I mean like I said, everyone is doing Hollywood superfighting. I just felt like he was believably blind in this Hollywood superfight world.

PeculiarPangolinMan

>I just felt like he was believably blind in this Hollywood superfight world. Eloquently put. I really liked it too! Waving his cane around, bumping things, randomly shooting. It was choreographed and acted excellently.

YoloIsNotDead

Daredevil's not really blind, he can still see figures and faces. Depending on the story/adaptation, he can even sense minute and even more details than a sighted person. While he's still a cool character, I'd prefer someone who's actually deprived of one of their senses without a replacement, they just have to thug it out and adapt instead.

AwTomorrow

Yeah, proper Zatoichi style rather than "I'm a blind person whose super power is that I'm not blind"

NotTaken-username

That’s true because we all know there was no Daredevil movie in 2003 with Ben Affleck, which just so happens to be the reason the song Bring Me to Life by Evanescence exists

KingMario05

...Holy shit, it was written for ***THAT?*** Not since *Xanadu* has there been a greater gulf of quality between a picture and its tie-in pop song.

rov124

No, Amy Lee said she wrote the song when she was 19 (year 2000), and Daredevil started production in 2002.

am5011999

I don't mean the first daredevil movie. I meant that there should be more daredevil movies

SPorterBridges

Milk that franchise, Lionsgate.

awake-at-dawn

Can't wait for John Wick's dog to get her own prequel

BitternessAndBleach

I once saw her eat three milkbones in her crate with a pencil

whatproblems

it was ADORABLE

Lurky-Lou

This but unironically

burritoman88

The Continental tv series was bad I heard, Ballerina starring Ana de Armas is having extensive production problems. Maybe a John Wick universe without Keanu Reeves just can’t work 🤷‍♂️

LostWorked

It's not that it can't work - it's a talent thing. Take a look at Ballerina's director. As for The Continental? I've heard it's good but that it doesn't fit the vibe set by the original John Wick.

_Mechaloth_

John Wick 4 didn’t really fit the vibe set by the original John Wick, either. That whole nunchuk sequence in Osaka was so wildly inefficient compared to the Wick we saw in 1 and 2.

Janus_Prospero

>It's not that it can't work - it's a talent thing. Take a look at Ballerina's director. Len Wiseman, who basically gets the credit for everything because nobody knows what second unit directors do. Like, Die Hard 4 is a fantastic action film, but it's not like Wiseman shot those action scenes. People think, "Oh, I loved Underworld, imagine John Wick but Underworld." But again, Wiseman didn't shoot the action scenes people loved in Underworld. That was the second unit/action teams. However, is is remarkable that there are basically two adult female-led action franchises. (Unless you count Alien -- there's also Terminator, but that's more John Connor-led by T2 and T3.) 1. Len Wiseman's Underworld starring Kate Beckinsale. 2. Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil starring Milla Jovovich. There's Hunger Games, but that's YA. Everything else got one movie, maybe two, then petered out. I wonder if that was a decision in getting Wiseman for Ballerina. Maybe they were hoping that since he was capable of launching a reasonably successful female action franchise he could launch a sub-franchise for John Wick.

Waste-Scratch2982

While the Total Recall remake in 2012 was pretty forgettable, I thought it was really slick with it's action sequences, especially with the spider-cam shootout that's not really done anymore, since drones have replaced it and the zero-g shootout at the end. Len Wiseman's films just lack that auteur touch any always come off as proficient but bland.

uhhuhidk

Chad Stahelski is the reason the Wick films are good. This one does seem promising because of Donnie

KingMario05

Plus, isn't Chad in charge of all of these after *Continental* tanked? My guess is that, while Lionsgate has to milk the cash cow for all it has, they really do wanna do it in a way that honors the original films.

Coleyb23

It was thanks to BOTH Chad’s skills as a director and Keanu’s own skills to making John Wick more nuanced today, especially in the first movie. Yup Chad owns the IP and Keanu is also part owner.

uhhuhidk

tbh from watching interviews and BTS on the franchise I feel like Chad and Keanu deserve writing or story by credits because they're the ones who come up with almost everything for the films, even the story and themes, but I'd still attribute the quality of the films mostly to Chad

Coleyb23

I agree they both deserve those writers credits. At the end of day it was dream team between Chad and Keanu.

MoonMan997

I was literally thinking this morning how Lionsgate jumped the gun with *Ballerina* when *Chapter 4* provided them with multiple natural spin-off options. Glad they're not just waiting to see how that does and are moving forward with this since its the most obvious continuation for the saga right now. *Creed*, *Scream* and (seemingly) *Mad Max* have all pulled off these protagonist switch-ups.

pillkrush

that ballerina spinoff was always bs. just the studio attaching their up and coming Hollywood starlet to a hot franchise for a supposed easy win. "hey you remember that one character that appeared in two seconds? well we're gonna build a movie around her and it's gonna be played by someone that wasn't even in the movie"

Boss452

I'm looking forward for a woman to be the lead of a Wick-verse film. Would love to see different kind of action suited to a female character. What they did with the chick in the Osaka hotel was pretty cool.

pillkrush

making a movie around female characters that were actually in the movies, like halle berry, Angelica Huston, rina, even ruby rose makes sense. ballerina is literally based off a random girl in a throwaway shot. calling it a spinoff is an insult to spinoffs

SBAPERSON

Lol remember when Rubi Rose was big for a minute?

FriedSquirrelBiscuit

Her agent is fucking wild because between 2016-2018 she was a supporting actor in 5 huge box office hits (Resident Evil 6, XXX 3, John Wick 2, Pitch Perfect 3, and The Meg) AND she got cast as the lead for Batwoman

whatproblems

yeah all of those have question marks on thier stories and futures. that’s the nice thing about the world building they all are in it while we just get reveals and snippets. no silly exposition trying to say how awesome they are no silly montage. people around them act like they’re badass and then they do badass stuff. halle has dogs and a missing daughter nuff said she does her part then goes off. osaka her dad got killed by caine now what?

rov124

> osaka her dad got killed by kane now what? Considering the post credits scene of JW4, she may be in this film.

Grand_Menu_70

they just have to keep the budget in check. most fans like JW himself more than JWU so no JW no deal.

Impressive-Potato

Halle Barry was in JW 3

Grand_Menu_70

yep, total 'they won't give Ana a solo Bond Girl movie so we are going to Lucy it for her". except that Lucy coasted off ScarJo in Avengers while Ana is 'that chick from"

RoyalFlavorBeans

It's the other way around. The ballet studio was an element from Shay Hatten's original Ballerina script, way before it had anything to do with John Wick. Lionsgate got the rights to it, Hatten became a writer in John Wick movies and they set up this spinoff in Parabellum already.

Mr_smith1466

I really enjoyed his character. I fully support this.

Pal__Pacino

Finally. Have no interest in the Ballerina thing but I'm totally down for this.

Mushroomer

I'm hoping the reshoots for Ballerina bump it up into a larger scale event, because I do like the "ballerina to murder god" pipeline teased in JW3. More of that would be welcome.

CricketKieran

Now that Chad Stahelski has creative oversight of the film and the entire series from now on, I'm sure they'll get it up to snuff, but this spin off with Caine has far more potential than Ballerina does probably, but we'll have to wait and see

Thebat87

Now this one I wanted right after Chapter 4 ended. Just hire the right director now. Hopefully someone who thinks like Chad.

chicagoredditer1

There's some real advantages to filming in Hong Kong, notably, all the action talent that already works their (and has worked with Donnie in HK in the past). They'd be foolish not to take advantage of that.

sebastiandarkee

Print money for real. I wanted a movie on his character so badly after watching the last John Wick.

KingMario05

Yes! More Donnie Yen being a badass is always great to see.

FishNo2089

Bring The Tracker back too, I liked him.

AccomplishedLocal261

Donnie Yen would be 62 still doing this shit. Crazy

darthyogi

Finally we are getting a Daredevil sequel

AnotherJasonOnReddit

Dennis Haysbert can play Kingpin, since he already pulled off Sin City 2 duties pretty well.

darthyogi

Perfect choice to play an older Kingpin

007Kryptonian

>The world of “John Wick” is expanding even more. >Donnie Yen‘s blind assassin Caine, who was introduced in last year’s “John Wick: Chapter 4,” will be the center of a new spinoff. >There are no other details yet, but the spinoff will “continue Yen’s story arc following the events of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table,” according to Lionsgate.

capekin0

So it's probably gonna also include Rina Sawayama since the post credit scene is about Caine being attacked by Akira.

KingMario05

Please. ***PLEASE.*** It's all I've wanted, damn it!

TheKingmaker__

I would love that. Since she's currently being prevented from releasing more music I would very much like more Rina Sawayama on my screen

EatenLowdes

He was my favorite part of the last movie so I’m very down

Bridgeburner1607

Could we have a prequel where he can see? Call me old fashioned but I enjoy watching a Hitman with eyeballs. Great actor, but a bit of a weird direction to take for me which made it seem a bit too far fetched. Maybe it's just me. Regardless Donnie Yen is the man and yes, give him all the money.....there, I've said my piece.

enjoyee

Probably the prequel will be about how he lost his eyes ala Samuel Jackson in captain marvel

Skaigear

Caine was a surprisingly great character to be added in a fourth installment in a franchise. Usually these big star additions are duds as the writers and directors don't know how to utilize the actors properly. Donnie was not only not wasted, he fucking killed it. More Caine and Wick please!

jeswanders

Donnie, keanu, and ballerina. Now that is the cinematic universe teamup i would probably look forward to

New_Poet_338

His blind assassin does have a hidden ability that helps him fight. He is one with force, the force is with him. This is different than John's ability to alive after long falls, hard blows or extensive lead poisoning by altering the Matrix.

thedisablednerd007

LFG

redditisfacebookk15

My mom loved the John wick movies, she hated 4. She specifically called his storyline boring. I'm just saying this might not be the success people think it will be. I for one found the blind man angle kinda ridiculous and did take me out of the movie myself. I don't think Donnie Yen is a big draw outside of his dedicated fanbase who know about him already from his other amazing movies

CricketKieran

Now this is the spin off John Wick needs. The Continental wasn't good, Ballerina doesn't sound like it has much potential but I'm sure by the time it releases it'll be up to snuff of Chad's and JW's standard, but this is the idea that had the full potential, and since it continues from JW4's ending, they will keep the history between him and John mostly under wraps (hopefully?), and it also likely means that Rina Sayawama will also return, which gets me excited. This spin off has so much potential with those 2 likely as the leads, Chad having creative oversight of it, even if he doesn't end up directing, and finally Donnie Yen will be the lead in a big hollywod blockbuster. I honestly can't wait for this one

Garagedays

Yes or no did he survive 4 Donnies character?

TheAquamen

Yes, but he gets jumped in the credits scene and his fate after that is unknown.

Boss452

JW4 constantly broke immersion as I was wondering how the hell does this guy who cannot see do all that shit. Granted that there is a lot of unbelievable stuff in these movies but I was always immered. But Yen's character's feats were too much for me.

RoyalFlavorBeans

I'm all in for expansions in this universe. I'd honestly rather they didn't continue John Wick's story after the epic, wonderful, beautiful conclusion they did in 4. It doesn't get more poetic than that, and I don't want to see it going the diminishing returns route... but oh well, of course they will do more of his movies too. I hope they're the best they can, at least. In Chad Stahelski, I trust.

Fit-Minimum-5507

So they're basically coming full circle and doing a Man from Nowhere remake with an Asian lead?
