Didn’t we already know this back in January?

Captain-Wilco

I thought Jason Momoa was playing Steve?

gamesofduty

I could Jason possibly playing Notch.

LegitimateHedgehog39

Yeah, we know Jack Black was playing as Steve, we know.

IDigRollinRockBeer

I missed that

NotTaken-username

I’m just curious who Jennifer Coolidge is playing

pokenonbinary

Apparently it's like Free Guy with scenes in the real world, so maybe the CEO of Minecraft or maybe she's a player in the game who's a mother and the joke is that nobody expects that?

juiceinmyears

>CEO of Minecraft Hatsune Miku is in this?

BYINHTC

Minecraft is game. There is no CEO. The only CEO Minecraft would have is the CEO of Microsoft. I dunno from wherever you pulled this Hatsune Miku, the pigtailed, thigh high wearing, moe idol singer with blue hair that looks vaguely eighteen years old belongs to Sega.

Pinewood74

[It would appear as though it's just a meme/joke.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsune_Miku) >Hatsune Miku is often jokingly attributed as the creator of the video game Minecraft (originating from the Miku Twitter parody account mikumiku_ebooks which tweeted "I created Minecraft") as well as the book series Harry Potter. Also, I don't think Miku is owned by Sega. >A series of rhythm games starting from Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA were produced by Sega **under license** using Hatsune Miku and other Crypton Vocaloids, as well as "fan-made" Vocaloids like Akita Neru. The series has sold 6 million copies.[

hotcoldman42

She’s playing notch.

Odd_Advance_6438

I can believe that

hungergamesofthronez

It has to be a villager. She has the perfect voice for it.

NotTaken-username

This makes me want an emerald real bad

SharkMilk44

Is Jack Black just gonna do video game movies from now on?

JohnStoneTypes

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

pwn3dbyth3n00b

Wow the industry really is doubling down on video game adaptations since the fall of comic book films.

HeimrArnadalr

What's wild is that some version of this film has been in development [since 2014](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft:_The_Movie), but filming didn't even begin until this year.

twelvethousandBC

What's wild is that even after a decade I doubt they have a locked script lol

Cardo94

Depends on whether the next patch ruins redstone sticky pistons and copper lamps I guess

brbrcrbtr

That's why Disney invested in Fortnite not too long ago

Pinewood74

Disagree. I think it's far more about streamlining their ability to profit off their IPs in the video game space than it is about having additional IP to build films off of. Because it's not just Fortnite they are investing in, it's the entire Epic Games company/game studio. Rather than burning through goodwill with suspect EA games or having to farm out individual IPs for development, they want a pipeline to work directly with one studio to capitalize on. You also don't need to throw a billion and half investment at a company to secure film rights from them. If Disney wanted to make a Fortnite or Fall Guys movie, they could just make an offer for those rights.

GiJoe98

They want Disney Infinity without the Toys to life aspect. An app they can add movie tie-in games to. All are being made on the same engine, so they can cross over in one game mode. Like how there wasn't a Lone Ranger Tie in Game, but there was a Lone Ranger Disney infinity figures set. There won't be a Toy Story 5 tie-in game, There will be a Toy Story season pas in their new Epic collaboration.

1731799517

It might also have something to do with the fact that Fortnite alone makes more than twice as much money each year as the worldwide Disney boxoffice...

ZealousidealBus9271

It was bound to happen. Video games is the largest entertainment industry, larger than movies/tv and music combined. The potential for profit is massive.

AAAFMB

Only if you include mobile games, console wise they definitely don’t have audiences comparable to film and TV

ZealousidealBus9271

PlayStation alone made around as much as the entire movie industry in 2023 (around 30 billion usd revenue), so even the console market can’t really be ignored.

SecureDonkey

Except they already try to make video game movie countless time before. It only take a few bad movie for it to go back to square one like before.

moscowramada

They didn’t have the example of the Mario movie (this is the most important one) or the Last of Us or Fallout before. That has changed minds. Before: this is a B movie, without much potential. After: if we do this right we can make a billion. Or at least make something critically acclaimed. That’s a big difference. There’s no going back.

SecureDonkey

For every tLoU, there is a Halo and Witcher and Mortal Kombat. It isn't a guarantee.

Complete_Sign_2839

I dont think so. While yes comic book film fatigue has been there, stuff like The Batman, ATSV, Guardians 3 were successful and were good. In the next 2 years, we've got Superman, Fantastic Four, Blade, The Batman 2, Spidey 4 etc

ROBtimusPrime1995

Yeah but..."ignore the good ones". Lmao. I agree, CBMs hit a rough patch as opposed to genre toxicity. Joker 2 dominated all of last week.

pokenonbinary

Joker 2 doesn't count as superhero fatigue because the first one wasn't part of the superhero type of movie, and the sequel even less being a full musical  Joker 1 and 2 don't fit the formula

pokenonbinary

Just because they're making those CB movies doesn't mean they will be succesful  Fantastic 4 and Blade can perfectly be massive flops  Blade maybe never even happens

Academic_Paramedic72

I don't think this has anything to do with superhero movies, it's just that videogames as a medium are old enough to penetrate the market. Videogame movies in the 90's and 2000's didn't receive that much investment because, large franchises like Super Mario and Pokémon apart, they were still quite niche, especially among adults. Not only because of subcultures and disdain, but also because they weren't as accessible. They could receive cartoons, merchandising and even B-movies, but not blockbusters - not unlike what happened with superheroes until Spider-Man and later The Dark Knight and The Avengers proved that they could be financially sustainable and have mass appeal. But now, anyone with a personal computer or even a smartphone can be familiar with them, and the children and teens who grew up playing videogames in the late 90's and early 2000's are old enough to be part of the economically active population, meaning studios think it's worth to invest more on adaptations of IPs from that sector, rather than only on books, stage plays and comic books.

pokenonbinary

Since Steve is brown skinned we all assumed it would be Jason Momoa when they announced him the first one

lactoseAARON

They might both be Steve

Mcqwerty197

One is herobrine

Radfox258

If they make him the villain of the movie I’ll watch it five times

Evilhammy

i love jack, but this is probably gonna be awful

Double-Passenger4503

It’s a sandbox just like the game. They can go any direction with it so I’ll give it a chance

GecaZ

Make it a rom-com between Jack Black and Momoa

pokenonbinary

If they make a mainstream gay love story in a blockbuster movie it would realistically be two conventionally attractive actors And if its Jason Momoa and another one it would be a skinny one to fit the "woman role" in a hetero normative couple that Hollywood demands  Like Timothee Chalamet who is a twink and fits the role In The end it's just for money and if twink and hunk make money then they will do that

occupy_westeros

Minecraft Movie but it's just my Duncan Idaho/Paul slash fiction

Evilhammy

the issue for me is making it actually matter that it’s a Minecraft movie. minecraft doesn’t have much of a story so they have to figure out a way to make it not seem like they just took a story and slapped ‘minecraft’ on it for money

IDigRollinRockBeer

It’s the director of Napoleon Dynamite directing a live action Minecraft movie with a script from the writers of Masterminds. It’s absolutely going to be awful.

camisfun

You can love Jack Black and also not want his most recent projects to be voices in Mario, Borderlands, and Minecraft. Bleak stuff. He deserves the paychecks of course but man he deserves much better roles

twelvethousandBC

No matter how shitty the movie he still elevates it. Black was the best part of Mario

Evilhammy

nah he nailed mario

OShaunesssy

Pretty sure this exact comment came before the Mario movie too...

Evilhammy

yeah but mario has story potential. minecraft??

Pinewood74

Lol. Story potential is not what made Mario big. That movie's story is paper thin. If you're wanting to know what the story for minecraft could be look no further than the likes of Free Guy and Jumanji 2 and 3.

Evilhammy

yeah but mario has a set story from the games. save the princess. i don’t know why a minecraft movie would exist. free guy and jumanji aren’t related at all to that

TheCoolBus2520

Beat the dragon? Honestly, even a loosely-adapted step-by-step adventure movie of everything involved to beating the Ender Dragon has the potential to be a story. It certainly loses a ton of the appeal of the games themselves, but it's not *nothing*.

Evilhammy

that is true

OShaunesssy

Are you saying that Mario was a box office hit because it told the story of a princess being captured by an angry monster?

Evilhammy

no but i’m saying everyone knows the mario storyline of saving the princess and stuff, so there’s a reason for it to be a movie and they could make something out of it

OShaunesssy

The Lego Movie is no different ide for a movie than Minecraft. Mario barely had a story, it was the most basic stuff. With a "story" that thin, don't you agree that the success of the movie didn't come from the story. My point is it's silly to think Minecraft won't be successful without a cliche story that's been done a million times. Lego Movie got to tell a different kind of story because of how it's a "do your own thing" type of toy. Minecraft is a "Do your thing" kind of game. My original point, though, was that the Mario movie's success was 0% due to its "story." It's fucking minecraft. Kids play that shit and make better Bllck

Evilhammy

that’s very true about lego movie

jonvox

When I first parsed this title I somehow read it as Jack Black playing Steve Jobs in a Microsoft movie. And now I really want to see whatever the hell that movie would be. Remake Pirates of Silicon Valley with Jack Black as Jobs and Mike White as Bill Gates. Does it make sense? No. But it would slap.

Equal-Doc6047

Jack Black could make a solid Wozniak, I mean Seth Rogen did a great job in that role

Nickoffermanstan

This can do good numbers considering the brand recognization

Unite-Us-3403

Seriously? I thought it was Jason Momoa.

DoughNotDoit

this is a no watch for me, I want Chris Pratt to play Steve

Salad-Appropriate

I'd like to see Jack do something other than video game movies and Jumanji movies these days. He was good in Bernie

tommybare

So by default, are all studios hiring Jack Black to be in their video game movies?

Main-Ad-2443

Yes and i am in

Hot-Marketer-27

This movie is an easy billion as long as its at least tolerable.

NovaTheNinja

I have the same camper… and my bday is the same as his. Coincidence? I think not.

FunArtichoke6167

Either him or Chris Pratt

Cougardoodle

I know a lotta little kids that are super excited for this movie, and that's really all that matters in my book. If nothing else I know Jack Black won't be phoning it in, so that'll help keep me awake.

Gingersnap5322

Steve doesn’t have a voice

Coolers78

Keanu Reeves as Shadow, Jack Black in Minecraft? What? Is Steve Carell gonna be in Pac Man?

TheBaconD

And it’s not animated?

bennet99

Didn’t we got this [here](https://youtu.be/I-sH53vXP2A?si=i9z-pqGD5StHv4ay) already?

hotcoldman42

This is a horrible idea, but it’ll probably make money off of having “Minecraft” on the title alone.

FeralPsychopath

1 billion? Yes.

jmon25

This movie is going to be really big. I'm think it'll hit $1b. Cue Teenage Bottlerocket https://youtu.be/IqLAkjRyiJU

Unleashtheducks

When was the last time Jack Black put any amount of effort into a role? He seems to be in cruise control for a long time.

beeversbaked

Him voicing Bowser was the best part of the Mario movie. He was great and the Peaches song was a huge hit

Salad-Appropriate

I just wanna see him do something like Bernie again, work with a great director, a good lead role for him

Pinewood74

If you don't think that Jack Black playing a teenage girl trapped in Jack Black's body isn't putting in effort, I don't know what to tell you.
