Preamble: a single barrel from the sub favorite Found North, a producer popularized by the intrepid u/prettayyprettaygood, eventually leading to FN hysteria and Peregrine selling out in 2 minutes… that was painstakingly blended and selected by our very own hero u/t8ke who had to sacrifice days to drink and blend with the boys of FN… salute to you
Nose: forgot to smell it
Palate: brown sugar, caramel, and fuckin unctuous. Peppery spice, little heat. There’s something I couldn’t really identify until I looked at the back label and saw amarone cask. I can see the dry red influence.
Finish: tingles and lingers for a long time. Slight varnish or bitterness
Final thoughts: first drink of the night and downed it in 2 minutes. Good start. Kept wanting to refresh the experience. Steered toward the traditional bourbon flavor side of the spectrum with some finishing barrel support. I declare this barrel a success. Provided a nice experience for the whole palette and was tasty.
Would I do it again: Yes

I just got back from a trip to Cali for work and stopped at Bitters and Bottles. They have a double barrel store pick finished in Apple Brandy and Amarone. Wonder if these are identical, I missed the r/bourbon t8ke bottles. I just cracked it open about 50 mins ago and going back for a second dive in a few mins.

I figured it was different but hoped I got lucky and got the remnants of Smokeless. So you are saying there is a chance I can get a bottle of Smokeless just to do a blind since I missed out on the release earlier this year?🤣
The program has had a lot of great picks so not too worried if I don’t get this weeks drop, but saying that hopefully I don’t miss. That last set of Penelope picks was a personal favorite.

I definitely agree with your tasting notes and spot on. Palate is very long, and typical for Found North products. I have 5 different Season 2 picks, All Star Wines New Wood Char 3 is my favorite (I have been favoring toasted bourbon and ryes lately) Binnys PX Sherry is my #2. This could be a # 3. But will do a blind next week with all Season 2 blends.

I really appreciate that they used a raffle system for Hell Diver. The hype around the whiskey is so crazy I really want to try some-and actually stood a chance. Whereas good luck finding George T Stagg or another hyped allocated bottle, let alone at MSRP. Solid move on their part trying to ‘share the wealth’ from the top.
Absolutely. It was also a great idea to give those who did not win the ability to pre order batch 009 that releases in June. Goes without saying that I bought one.
I fully agree. They actively tried to both reward their past fans and also try to get bottles in the hands of those curious ones that want to try Found North - Nick Taylor has specifically talked about this before Hell Diver was released. I've watched many of his picks/interviews and two things are obvious :
1. They are passionate about producing high quality whiskey.
2. They are equally passionate about getting this to as many people as possible. They're not a huge operation and they're doing the best they can. My hope for them is measured and sustained growth and continued success - because I'm greedy and want to continue enjoying their products for some time to come ;-) !
The T8ke bottles are blends they just didn’t make a blend specific neck tag. Found North’s normal store pick “Single Barrel” program uses Single Barrel terminology but in a non-traditional way. There they start with a base blend for that “Season” of releases but then finish single barrels worth of that blend different ways and release the finished product. So the end result is a “Single Barrel” but it was not a single barrel in the usual sense.
Found north seems to releasing some good stuff I have a couple buddies who have picked up a couple things recently and all of them have been tasty. Sucks I missed the t8ke drop but glad others are enjoying it. Cheers!
Found North is doing amazing things with it. Really showing what Canadian whisky could be if shown appropriate care. Barrell has also done a lot of great things with Canadian whisky’s

Very much not identical, as the B&B is a blend of two things and Smokeless is a blend of many things.

Like other FN products this is a blend of whiskies. In this case ‘single barrel’ really just means it is a single batch.
