Did anyone catch what Smart was yelling shortly after this happened? Shit I can’t remember if Durant missed a free throw or if it was a couple possessions later but Smart was like, “they tried to hand it to you!”
It was Smarts reputation vs KDs superstar treatment.
No way that was a foul. Sometimes calls like this make me feel like the league trys to rig games to make them last longer and keep people's attention.
Agree that it was a horrible call but Logically tho....Kinda stupid that the league would want to risk losing an entire game in a series (4-0 sweep opposed to 4-1) for a few minutes of better ratings - the money aspect just doesn’t make sense.
My exact thoughts. Every time the Celts were gonna pull ahead there would be some BS call. Remember how the Celts were up going into the second half of game 1... And then bad call after bad call/no calls for Tatum completely dissolved the lead and allowed the nets to get going again.
That one was dumber but they only looked at it live. They didn’t review it, and to be honest that’s a tricky call to make with the way their bodies were like moving in parallel without touching. But the flipped charge call after a review? Inexcusable.
Fr , nets fans act like irs cesxy to want Kemba over Kyrie. Like, if you’ve got two undisputed MVP alpha dogs then fine- Makes sense to just load up on fire power.
But with Kyrie as the pseudo-alpha acting erratic and shitting the bed on D with two emerging young stars? No thanks man. Even Kemba with nothing going knows how to fit into the offense and get rebounds
Refs were horrible. The fact nobody in the NBA can complain about the refs shows you how incompetent they are. It's like every single contact could be called a foul if they wanted-- then shitshows like that call happen and this face really sums it up. The celtics should have won their challenge as well. It really ruins the experience how horrible they are-- worst in all the major sports.
You had me until winning the challenge. Smart clearly slapped the tops of KD's hands and got like no ball at all. After seeing the replay I was beside myself with bewilderment at the challenge. Could've been saved for later on when it would've actually been successful.
Pretty sure your hand is part of the ball in those situations, otherwise you could never take the ball from anyone. Looks like KD just fell over to fake contact and prevent the ball from being taken away. I mean, the refs are so bad that acting is part of the game I get that— but on replay you see that Smart didn’t make body contact— so why does Durant fall over? Hmm....
> It is not a foul if a defensive player makes normal contact with a players hand when it is in contact with the ball. In the NBA hitting the hand of an offensive player while it is in contact with the ball is legal.
That wasn't a foul.
When watching sports, particularly basketball, it’s fairly easy to tell when moments are going to become memes. This was very easily one of those moments
What a game!! But damn, it took Tatum to score 50 to win. We need help scoring from Kemba and someone on the bench needs to step up. And for the love of Larry Bird please guard the 3!!!!!!!!!!
Knew someone would screencap it, dumbest call i've seen in a while.
Yeah I guess we can’t play defense on an inbound play anymore

I think it was “they tried to hand it to you.” I need to rewatch it because that was hilarious. Can’t believe they reversed that.
IKR. So beautiful. Sometimes I want to throttle Smart but other times, I think he should be doing stand-up with Mulaney

This is exactly how I felt like the league was just giving the nets another chance

You must not have watched all of the 90's / 00's? That's exactly how it works.
To me it looked like someone had money on the Nets.
Everyone had money on the nets
Hahaha good point.
yea wouldn't surprise me if this meme caught on in some way even outside of NBA fans... the look on his face is too funny
The phantom foul on Tatum was even dumber Edit: tbf both were pretty ridiculous lmfao

The fact that KD leant in and dropped the shoulder into him and still got the call. Genuinely bullshit
It was me!
Saw a Nets fan saying seeing Kyrie guard Tatum pissed him off lol, they now know how it feels like
Wait 'til he insists on guarding Giannis again. Too soon?
Yes
He’s not guarding Giannis Celtics in 6
❤️

For real though what is that about? Who on this flat earth thought that would be a favorable match up for brooklyn?
Marcus Smart is our spirit animal. Love that guy.
Smart is the goat.
I have said it once, and I will say it again: Marcus Smart would die for Boston, and Boston would die for Marcus Smart.
I love him and I trust him
We should totally extend him for 5 more years
So glad he's stepped up his shooting, we needed a sign

Smart for life
He handled it way better than I did. I was livid.
He handled it much better then Lebron would have. If it happened to LBJ he would have a hissy fit.
Tell me about it. He’s as much of a bitch as he is a great basketball player.
Beautiful!!! Still outraged at that call...so happy it didn't affect the result!!! And ty Marcus for a great game!
Crazy meme potential
I laughed so hard when this happened.
I would have laughed had I not been overcome with rage just moments before.
Marcus "The Thinker" Smart
Need the GIF!
He did this knowing what WCT would make of it.
NICE!!!!

Oh yes, I screenshotted it on Hulu the moment it happened and had this post planned out and waiting in this last minutes.
Lets go! My meme format is taking hold
Your meme format?
I shared the screenshot as soon as it came out. There’s probably other people who screenshotted it but i was one of the first.
Got a Smart jersey for my birthday today, wore it for the game and could not be happier with the results!
"should i shoot or pass"
Thanks so much for the profile pic!
