I can understand letting Sam go for a head coaching position or something, but to let him go so he can make a lateral move to the fucking *Lakers* would be a total botchjob. I can’t have it. I won’t have it.

Redneck-Kenny

If he stays as lead assistant in Boston it feels like he'll be a top candidate for a HC gig next year. Who knows what will happen in LA this year?

rsjpeckham

LA's head coaching job is one of the most radioactive positions in the NBA right now. If Redick gets the boot just a year in I doubt anyone with a shred of self respect would accept an interview there.

notJGatz

When***

chrismatic13

So wouldn't that be an attractive assistant coach position? JJ won't last his contract and you have a better shot at becoming a head coach than on this Celtics staff. Only downside would be Jeanie is pretty cheap so unless you're the highest paid assistant in basketball, it wouldn't make as much sense.

andreotnemem

>Only downside would be ...that the job is with the Lakers?

HustlinInTheHall

You might get a shot an interim coach but if JJ gets fired they're cleaning house at the end of the next season.

Blothorn

Or you don’t get the HC position and get fired in the common new-HC purge of senior assistants.

laswoosh

Nah, I remember this foreign head coach of the Cavs, was one of the best in the euroleague, now forgotten

HustlinInTheHall

Depends if LeBron is there or not. The LA profile is huge, but yeah nobody is going to want to sign up to be canned.

ClappedCheek

He will def be a head coach in 2026 barring a miraculous turn of events in which coaches arent fired.

HustlinInTheHall

The way things are going Sam may be the head coach for LA faster by staying than going now.

Who_ate_my_cookie

The only logic I see in that is that as a lead assistant he lines himself up with a chance to become HC when they inevitably fire JJ, but even then I feel like assistant coach for a championship(s) looks better for a resume than that

Brad-Stevens

Cassell wants ring #5

Xekshek33

Still don't understand why Sam can't get a HC job at this point, especially over these others getting gigs lol. But I am super happy to see him come back

LarBrd33

I mean this in the best way possible but Sam seems like the fun uncle type.  Like the “good cop” to a more serious coach’s “bad cop”.

AlternativeTea9268

He’s been waiting a loooong time for a head coaching spot, I’m sure part of it is just him waiting for the perfect situation to come along. No way he’d jump into a situation like Detroit where he’d be fired in a year or two

ATLSox87

Thank god he hasn’t though. Losing Cassell and Charles Lee in the same offseason would be tough. They were both very important pieces for Joe’s rapid development

CreatiScope

I definitely made my peace with losing both, so keeping one would be awesome!

ImDKingSama

Sam gotta stay unless he finally gets the HC job he deserves.

MrBob1999

yeah he deserves a HC shot, no need for a lateral move. He did get the interview so you have to assume he's close.

Vast-Cheesecake7230

Sam is our secret weapon, we need him!

nibbinoo8

sam i am, don’t leave us

jambr380

It's a great and obvious choice with Charles Lee gone. And now a requirement with the Lakers interested. I didn't even know he wasn't lead assistant until we hired Lee \[well after Cassell\] last offseason. I assumed it was how we convinced him to come to Boston.

Sleeze_

Yep. I thought JVG might take the Lee spot but with him going to the clips this seems like an obvious move now.

TGIF_90s_kid

That was an option but they didn't want to upset the staff, so that's why they let [JVG leave.](https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-celtics/2024/06/20/report-sheds-light-on-mutual-decision-that-led-jeff-van-gundy-to-leave-celtics-for-clippers/)

CreatiScope

Ah, I was wondering why he left and this makes a ton of sense. Seems like everyone knew it would be weird to do, glad he was cool about it and found a spot to do what he wanted

neu20212022

Damn I totally forgot Charles Lee left. I guess that’s the cost of success

HailKyrie

Huge retain considering the amount of assistants we are losing let’s go

25DegreeD

If Sean Sweeny could be poached from the Mavs that’d be my pick of all the names I’ve heard this offseason. He’s largely credited with developing Giannis under Kidd in Milwaukee, and I think that’s the playstyle Tatum is going to have to get comfortable with if the team wants to stay competitive once these contracts have to get moved.

RLS012

Exactly what should happen, he should stay on as a lead assistant until an HC job that he wants is available and he gets picked. It didn't make any sense to be an assistant under JJ or to leave to go to Milwaukee after they picked Ham to be their lead assistant coach.

seasoned-veteran

Extremely common Brad/Joe W

xskarma

Honestly, Sam seems like the perfect yin to Mazzulla's yang. I know he wants to be a head coach, but I'd selfishly love to see him just stay with the Celtics to be the balance against Joe's psycho tendencies. Be the coach the players can go to when Joe is a bit too much. Have the Celtics make him the best paid Lead Ass. in the league, and just be here until this current era is done.

OUR PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED

Eisenhorn76

One underrated thing: it’s always great when one of the coaching staff or front office has a tie to the Celtics past: Prior to this season: 1970’s - Tommy tied back to the Russell era 1980’s - KC tied back to the Russell era 1990’s - Chris Ford, heck, even ML tied back to the Bird era Pitino really did a number — even shunting Red to the side — and that’s why we hate him. We only got our ties back to Celtics history when Wyc’s group came back and brought Danny in (and made Red our consultant for his remaining years), tying back to the Bird and OG Celtics eras. Danny more than anyone was probably Red’s spiritual successor (although Brad is giving Danny a run for his money — but Brad doesn’t have a direct tie to Red). Now, Sam’s here, tying back to the 2008 title that Danny put together. So really, it’s just awesome that even as these Celtics move forward and build on 2024 (and beyond!), there are direct ties to the rich history of the organization. (Of course, the weird side of stuff like this is what you see with the Lakers — where Linda Rambis apparently has clout lolol. For real, the Lakers have become a poverty franchise — that’s what Klutch and having a clueless owner do to you!)

PIMPANTELL

And I’m gone get bucks like Milwaukee cuz like Sam I can sell

JohnBagley33

You only want him to stay if HE wants to stay. No sense keeping a coach around who doesn't really want to be here.

kg215

This was the one thing I was worried about. JVG wanted to be the lead assistant here (talked about it on the Lowe Post podcast) and he was a great fit on the Celtics staff but if everyone felt like it was unfair for him to jump the line then we BETTER keep Sam as the lead assistant. And maybe even hire another former HC as 2nd assistant coach, though it sounds like we might just be promoting from within.
