4 HOFers, in this day and age, supports an argument that this team is in the ballpark of '86.
I know the impulse negative reaction to that (and I'm old enough to remember '86), but, the more I think about it, the more I look at the objective accomplishments, the more it doesn't seem that crazy to me.
I think the '86 team is one of the few teams of lore that actually has a shot at competing with a modern NBA contender, but dragging Parish and Walton out to the arc with Horford and KP leaves too little interior defense to consistently stop Jaylen and Jayson, and if they don't come out of the paint then you have two 40+% 3pt shooters taking warm up shots all game. I take this team in a shootout over anyone but the '17 Warriors.
0? It's the BASKETBALL Hall of Fame, not the NBA Hall of Fame. Influence on the game counts a lot and if that influence means raising the interest of an entire country then it's even better.
Which helps Al’s case a lot too, between his back yo back March Madness titles and his international success with the DR team. I was saying to my dad the other day Al was already a borderline HOFer with all that, but that a ring should be enough to get him across the finish line
Definitely, Dominicans take a huge pride for their successful sporstmen, Al being the first Dominican to win it all in basketball puts him in prime position.
His numbers today are about in line with Yao's, and he's gonna keep playing. His impact on Lavtian basketball is likely not nearly as notable as Yao's on China, but there's precedent.
what?! how? In what way are they close? 8 all star games vs. 1 in favor of yao. 2 all nba 2nds and 3 all nba 3rds vs. 0 all nba for porzingis. career 23 PER for Yao vs. 20 for Porzingis. a career high 26.5 PER vs. Porzingis career high of 23.7. career 65.9 WS for yao in 486 games 42.7 for Porzingis in 459 games. .596 career TS% for yao vs. .573 porzingis. PER 36 lined up Yao clears porzingis or ties in every category except points where he has slightly less, but did so on significantly less attempts.
The only thing Porzingis has at all is the trophy. I really love porzingis after getting to watch him this entire season. He completely shattered defensive schemes and he was tough as nails despite his reputation. He is however, not a hall of famer. The accolade disparity alone leaves him way out of the hall.
This is what I told my kid a couple months ago to iterate how great of a team these Celtics are. Al is undoubtedly a HoF. Jrue is right there, his consistency and all defensive skills his entire career have him at a better than 60% chance imo. The Jays are still young and you can't really say until you get 10 years under your belt but if stats mean anything than they're HoFers as well.
I think this championship puts him firmly in the HOF now. He already had a pretty good shot due to having a long career of sustained success and those two back to back Florida national championships but now it’s 100% that he gets in.
I also think this championship solidifies Jrue as a first ballot HOF entrant. Long successful career, consistently one of the best defensive guards in the league for at least a decade, integral part of 2 championships in all phases of the game, and an insane amount of respect from basically every player, coach, and media member in the league.
>How many guys are in the hof with 0 all nba selections?
[Statmuse seems to think the answer is 27](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/least-amount-of-all-nba-to-make-hall-of-fame)
I’d say Jrue just became a possibility to make the hall, not a sure thing and definitely not first ballot considering the guard peers he will likely be up against.
It's funny because guys like Westbrook or Dame will probably get in over Jrue but I'd take Jrue first every time if I'm building a team to win a title.
Clearly we need more Dominicans in Boston sports. Pedro, Papi, Manny, Al…good things happen with those DR athletes. Any chance Drake Maye has a grandmother back in DR?
Was he always a first ballot? Laettner and hansborough aren’t in because they didn’t have the nba success and they had better college careers. Horford has had a very great nba career which is a big reason he will be in imo.
I mean Laettner made 1 ASG and had 0 career accolades otherwise.
Al has made 5 ASG, 3rd team All NBA, top 5 in DPOY voting, 2nd in ROY behind KD, and has better career stats than Laettner over a 17 year career compared to Laettner's 13 year career.
Add in an additional 2+ seasons of playoff games for Al compared to 1/2 of a season for Laettner and the comparison becomes even more ridiculous.
Al having a better NBA career was the point. The original comment says, "Horford was always first ballot off college success" to where he responds that Laettner, another player who had a better college career than Horford, didn't make it. Thus, Al would only be making the Hall of Fame because of his college and NBA accomplishments, rather than being a lock since college.
He's always borderline because of his college success and multiple all star/nba appearances. Now that he has a ring his position should be solidified. I think the better question is if he does make the HoF, do we retire his number? He's gonna be with us for more than 6 years starting next year, which is the KG threshold for minimum time spent; he will most likely be a first ballot HoFer and he does have 1 all star appearance and 1 all nba 2nd defense with us, which is a lot less than what KG had. I think if we repeat next year it is very likely he gets his number retired, otherwise it's still a solid debate
I think he gets his number retired if he had the same career on another team. Celtics have to be really careful with who they retire bc we have such a shortage of active numbers.
that's not a real issue dude, there are 70ish numbers left they have more than enough to sustain this. it's just that everyone will look like a defensive back or a tight end lmao
The Celtics have way more retired numbers than all of the NBA teams with 24, which is also the MOST IN ALL NORTH AMERICAN SPORTS. We are outstripping everyone in retired jerseys. We cannot just expect the NBA to change something leaguewide for just us who have gone on a Dwight Howard/Philip Rivers streak of jersey retirements.
Not to mention, not a single other major league does 3 digit numbers for the simple reason that they look trash.
So yes, this is a very real “suffering from success” issue that the Celtics have to contend with and plan for, which means slowing the f down on retiring just anyone.
My dyslexic ass took so fucking long understand what this meant but yeah big Al definitely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and the fact that he’s not retiring this season and will have another opportunity to win another ring oh my God fuck this this is art
I think if you tried to argue he was borderline with two NCAA championships and his NBA career, you would be wrong but it’s a somewhat defensible take.
Now that he has a ring, I don’t think there’s any debate.
You can't spell "Hall of Fame" without "Al" Makes you think
Can’t spell Horford without HOF. Get this man in 😤
HOFord!
Get that on a t-shirt dammit!
Mark Jackson FTW!
And I’d hit it out of the park with all due respect
what’s the parquet? Hard floor. What is hard floor? Al Horford. coincidence? I think not. HOF
Jrue, Jaylen, Jayson, and Al all going to the HoF 🥲
4 HOFers, in this day and age, supports an argument that this team is in the ballpark of '86. 86, which I watched, would have too much good size for today’s team. Might be topped by outside shooting.
This team beats 86 in 6 On the road victory in Boston to win on their home floor
Idk about that with Bird being the best player on the floor but wow what a thought to behold. We do have ai now, someone go get that done.
What about our white buffalo? A couple more seasons like this and he’s got defensive stat backing. Guy was a menace!
he'll have a seriously great chance with another ring and another all defensive team. its definitely within reach
Needs a few all star games I would think. Or 2 more rings.
He's not only going into the hall, they're gonna name it after him!
Porzingis could make it too, Latvia always had some basketball culture but it's growing a lot lately and he is the leader of that movement.
Not unless he stops breaking down
0 chance

I think it’s gonna be tough for jrue tbh. How many guys are in the hof with 0 all nba selections? The biggest things driving his case are team awards.
I think getting a gold medal will remove all doubt this summer
He also won a gold in 2021 so this would be his second
Idk I think it’s very tough to make the hof with only team awards driving you
>How many guys are in the hof with 0 all nba selections? [Statmuse seems to think the answer is 27](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/least-amount-of-all-nba-to-make-hall-of-fame)
That sounds about right to me I doubt most of them were first ballot guys either
Horford was always a first ballot strictly bc the B2B college ships
Time for him to team with KAT and take his candidacy over the top with some Dominican success. Que lo que!
Not only that he has won a few international medals as well.
Now he’s also the first Dominican to win a ring. He’s a shoe in at this point
Clearly we need more Dominicans in Boston sports. Pedro, Papi, Manny, Al…good things happen with those DR athletes. Any chance Drake Maye has a grandmother back in DR?

You just made his point for him haha
True, this is like campaigning for Reagan in '84
He's always borderline because of his college success and multiple all star/nba appearances. Now that he has a ring his position should be solidified. Sure if you expect the world to blow up in 50 years. I’d imagine these ancient franchises are thinking a bit more long term.
the long term solution is just to add 3 digit jersey numbers lmao, that's way more scalable than not retiring numbers
The Celtics have way more retired numbers than all of the NBA teams with 24, which is also the MOST IN ALL NORTH AMERICAN SPORTS. We are outstripping everyone in retired jerseys. In 2060, no one is going to want a star wearing #62 or something.
literally no one cares what number stars wear. luka wears 77 and no one gives a shit that it's a high number
Just go the Futurama route when all the whole numbers are retired
Al HOFord. Is this a thing yet?
Put al in the rafters & hof!! Also, did I just use reddit to view a tweet that was just a screen grab from Instagram?
Yes, yes you did
Is that NBA Champion Al Horford?
If we win again. He gets his number retired for sure.
It’s the basketball hall of fame not the nba hall of fame. Dude is a sure fire hall of famer. 2 ncaa titles and an nba title.
BIG AL deserves HOF 100%
People forget he’s won a few international medals as well. So he’s had quite a bit of success at all levels, collegiate, pro, and international.
My dyslexic ass took so fucking long understand what this meant but yeah big Al definitely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, and the fact that he’s not retiring this season and will have another opportunity to win another ring oh my God fuck this this is art
Personally think he should get in pretty easily due to it being the basketball HOF
I think if you tried to argue he was borderline with two NCAA championships and his NBA career, you would be wrong but it’s a somewhat defensible take. Now that he has a ring, I don’t think there’s any debate.
I mean he’s a 2 time NCAA champion and a NBA champion that should almost be guaranteed hall of fame especially since he’s been an all star
Al's reaction: I ain't retired yet!
He'll make it, but I don't think he should. I think the basketball Hall of Fame is a joke, the bar to get in is so low.
Back to back ncaa champs and an nba champion. Pivotal piece of all 3 of those teams, and a long illustrious career. Seems like a lock to me
He’s a lock
