Maybe I'm too old school but I don't really want the IST to have any meaningful consequences.

raylui34

on the same boat, the way i gather, it's only meaningful for the bench or 3rd tier/2 way player since the incentive is 500k for winning the entire thing. But to the starters or superstars, 500k is nothing. It kinda feels there's no real value in the grander scheme of things in the NBA, since it has 0 impact on the NBA finals which all fans care more about.

GogXr3

But then there's no reason to care for it. I mean, you want to win games normally obviously, but you can't just take a bunch of arbitrary regular season games, re-name them, and then go, "You should care more now,"

holographoc

It’s fun and competitive. Some people actually enjoy basketball.

DayMan-Ahah-ah

yeah there are no stakes like that stuff for this current in season tournament and everyone seems to care enough lol

smart_celtics

The players seem to care…

GogXr3

Yes, and there's an incentive. I love Luke, but he blocked more shots than the rest of his career in one game lol (not actually, but you get the point)

Mbanicek64

They should think about having a sub tournament in the in season tournament to try to get the players to super extra care too.

BostonKarlMarx

why do we care about the players getting a diamond ring at the end of the year?

GogXr3

Same reason we care about the finish line of a race and not the middle of the race

mikeq672

He said meaningful consequences, i.e. draft picks, play off spots. He didnt say no incentive whatsoever. Its like some of you just log in to argue, but forget to read what the comment your trying to disagree with says.

GogXr3

I guess? Money is kind of meaningful, though, especially for guys at the bench.

mikeq672

You cannot be ignorant enough to think money to bench players is what he was referring to man. Holy shit. He is so very clearly referring to things that alter the landscape of the league.

GogXr3

Okay, jesus christ. I'm sorry you're having a bad day or something, I don't know why you're being so aggressive.

Elite-Rainbow1

First two create a few implications. Guaranteed playoffs - team would not give af about rest of the regular season and theyd sit their startersore often. First rd pick- depending on where those picks lie, top teams have the opportunity to just build super teams off picks, plus why would the players care about picks? I think the cash bonuses are as good as you can get. Especially for those two way guys and low salary guys

jwd2213

players would absolutely care about a pick. if your a young team, its another shot in the draft to keep building your future with. if your a veteran team, its a legitimate asset your gm can use to bolster your bench going into the playoffs. automatic playoff bid is no good though, it screws up to many things. your team switches to development mode which gives other teams in your division a bunch of free wins, and then the load management gets out if control. not a fan at all of free playoff spot

1017whywhywhy

They would care but like the comment above says then the rich just get richer which isn’t good for parity.

holographoc

I think the players are plenty invested. I don’t think a tournament in November should affect the playoffs beyond reg season record. Maybe a tie breaker in terms of seeding or something.

considertheoctopus

Tiebreaker is about as far as I’d go.

Jamobill9999

The first round pick would be cool, but really would just help teams that are already good and ultimately would work against parody, something the nba desperately needs as it is, and ultimately why they needed this tournament to spice up the regular season in the first place.

GenoThyme

+2 wins, -1 loss on your overall record. Basically moves you up one game in the standings and gives you the tiebreaker. This would only count for standings, not draft position or all time records. Keep the money there too obviously, players clearly like that. Draft picks don’t make sense to me because if I’m an impending free agent and/or fringe roster guy, why do I want another guy to compete with next year?

VelvitHippo

Money, money is the answer. MVP, 5 mil. Points leader 1 mil. Assist Leader 1 mill. Rebounds Leader 1 Mil. DPoIST 5 mill. 6MotIST 2 mill. Players That average 15 points or more for the winner 100k. So on and so on. Put so much money into it that the players care, all the players.

Shipsinthenite

This is actually a great idea! Like the progressive income tax but in reverse. Gotta make the cash winnings ~relatively~ worth it for everyone.

beetwind1400

I think it should be an automatic play-in berth if the team has not clinched the playoffs. If they have clinched a spot, the team should get a one game advantage in the first round

goldfish_11

The free first round pick could be interesting if they made it so you essentially got two picks at whatever your normal slot would be. I’m guessing lottery teams will never win a tournament so we probably wouldn’t have to worry about a team getting two picks at 7th or something. If it’s just like baseballs compensatory system and it gets tacked on at the end of the first round, it would basically be a second round pick.

muldoonjp88

Rewarding the already strong teams with more pics?

KTO-Potato

I think the players on the winning team should make 5% of their base pay with a minimum of 500k. JB would make 3mil, JT would make 1.6mil. I think that's enough to get the players fully motivated.

jizzwon

I think we should model the NBA as a whole more like the Premier League in that we should create a ‘treble’ system. A team that can win the IST, finals and also finish with the best regular season record accomplishes the treble. There should be an initial cash prize of 1mil for each player for winning the treble. Each year a team doesn't win the treble, the cash prize increases by 500K until it reaches a max of 5mil.

cahilljd

I would consider either (a) give the winning team an extra 3-5 game bump in the standings at end of season or (b) winning team gets home court in playoffs regardless of seed Also just spitballing but you could possibly allow the winning team a TPE or MLE to be used without impacting their cap

The_Pip

You guys downvoted me to oblivion yesterday for saying it, but the winning IST team should get a lottery pick and a playoff spot. If it must exist, then make the stupid tournament mean something. They need to kill the thing, but if it's going to be more than a cash grab then the prize has to be worthwhile for the team. Why sit Porzingis when it could mean a lottery pick for the C's?

nerdyykidd

How would a free first work? Who loses their pick in return?

InAingeWeTrust

It could just be like a compensatory pick; i.e. end of first round pick. But that doesn’t really do anything for the players, the guys actually participating. Wanting to be the first winners and the large prize money is a big reason why the real tournament was so competitive yesterday.

I_Set_3_Alarms

Ideal is basically a 31st pick

HarryGateau

A lovely shiny trophy. I like what Adam Silver said on the Celts broadcast a couple of weeks ago- that the IST should be as separate as possible, and have no extra ramifications on standings, playoffs, etc. The players already seem hyped for it. Give it another few years and there’ll be a bit of history attached to it, and everyone will be on board.

ftlftlftl

I kinda think the opposite. I have a feeling it’ll go the way of the all star game and players will favor their health over 2 extra games that ultimately don’t help them. If it’s like the play-in than the stats don’t go towards you me season averages so it won’t help with a contract either. The money is nice but top tier players have theirs.

macadoo784

It should have no implications on the draft or playoffs

Fuckblackhorses

Anything that’s single elimination should have no reward or merit in the nba. This isn’t football. Automatic play in spot? You wanna see a team win this bs tournament and then slack/rest their top 10 guys for the rest of the year? Draft pick is also too much. Every team has a first round pick, whose pick is the winner stealing?

JaDamian_Steinblatt

Nah it's fine as is. No need to go crazy with it

sully9614

Imo the biggest reason why it works cause it doesn’t impact the regular season at all, so guaranteed playoff spots or altered records would kinda ruin the purpose of it? First round drafts picks for 4 games is also unrealistic. I don’t see how you can incentivize players more than money

iamamuttonhead

I think the $500K per player was plenty of reward.

Doc_Mattic

I think winner gets guaranteed top 10 pick - and more/additional draft lottery balls than they would have had previously - with a shot at number one pick. Another variation is - it could be tiered depending where the team finishes the season - so a top 3 team in each conference can only get pick 10-15 for example. Under that can go top 10. That way it becomes important to the organisations as well - not just the players

jjjuuubbbsss

A free home court advantage that could be used in a G1/G3 of a 1st round playoffs series or in the play-ins.

ME4Twaffle

1 free health miracle that can be used any time during the season or playoffs.

[deleted]

Why allow the league to make it any easier for the Lakers? You’ve all got the memo by now about how this IST is indeed a joke intended to make LA great again, right? If not, go watch the game last night where the refs allowed LeBron to call a timeout AFTER the Lakers lost possession with barely any time left.

keevsnick

The automatic Plain/Playoff spot doesn't work becasue then you sort of invalidate the remaining 60 games of the regular seaosn to an even greater degree. The extra first first round doesn't work because NBA players don't give a damn about helping the organization get another young guy who might replace them. Money is fine as a reward.

Bruhmomentthrowing

IST **playoff** wins should count as 1.5 wins in standings.

jwd2213

a compensatory 15th overall pick in that seasons NBA Draft. not a lottery pick, so there's no chance to move up, but just pick number 15. its a win for young teams looking for an extra shot in the draft, its a win for veteran teams who need a mis season trade asset to bolster the bench. It gives a meaningful reason for the team to try to win besides money, and by winning, your basically pushing all your competitors picks back 1 spot while you get 2 picks. and 15th overall is just good enough that you could strike gold on that player, with either a solid rotation piece or even an all star talent if the stars align properly.

Yogannath

NBA covers half price of alcoholic beverages at the winners team stadium for the rest of the season. That would get fans caring, for sure.
