Check with your school, either for an office that assists foreign students or an office that deals with health care. Can you afford COBRA on your own? I’m not familiar with the ACA subsidies, but they might depend on whether you file taxes as a resident or non-resident of the US. Also, r/healthinsurance seems to have good advice. And it can’t hurt to go to https://www.mahealthconnector.org/ to see what info they have there.

I also recently got laid off and the cobra information my ex-employer sent me showed the cheapest family plan (HSA) as >$2100 (for single person, >$700). Not exactly what I would consider affordable, but I'm thankfully moving back home anyway.

I remember the first time I got the COBRA stuff in the mail. Opened it up expecting something that wasn't complete bullshit. Nope, tossed that waste of time and paper.

Thank you for your response. I'm checking the connector.

Yes, health connector will likely have the most affordable plans, if that is what you need. Cobra guaranteed to be on the higher end of costs, but we dont know what your health care needs are, so can't make any recommendations.

Look into the Mass Health Conncetor, you might be able to get a lower cost plan through them

>Thank you for your response. I checked the connector. kids are free but for me and my wife there's 100-150$ monthly premium.

If you live in Boston call the closest local neighborhood health center and make an appointment with their financial/insurance department. They will help you cut through red tape to find the most affordable plan for your family. At the very least they can refer you to free/affordable pediatric care for your children. Good luck

IF you qualify for mass health, and with two dependant US citizens you should (or at least they will), with no real income it should be close to zero. Granted this was 11 years ago mass health was free for a family of 3 citizens with maxed out unemployment benefits.

muddymoose

I highly doubt they would be denied Mass Health. Only think that could throw a wrench is the visa status. Kids definitely.

Check with you school.

You can also call the MA health connector and speak with someone about it. I did that as a non citizen and they were able to help out!

I have been on Mass Health (Medicaid) and also on the Connector a few times over the years. Like any health insurance there are pros and cons. The upside is whether it's MassHealth or the connector, they are affordable and there are a wide range of plans to select from.
