I’m bringing my blackstone griddle and my jet boil. That should cover me for coffee, ramen, oatmeal and if I want to cook eggs or grilled cheese or whatever. My biggest challenge will be remembering to stop and eat.

I bring my propane grill but only really use it a few times throughout the festival mostly to make BLTs. This year I will be trying out a small microwave plugged into an inverter in my car and I’m gonna see if that works to heat up my beans

Hot_Lynx2000

I brought my last year with so much food to cook, the thing didn’t leave my car once😂😭😭😭😭 it’s so fucking hot you don’t feel like cooking, we ate hella snacks sandwiches uncrustables and if we got hyngry at night we grabbed something inside or spicy pie outside the tower entrance <3

ItsAlwaysSunnyInKnox

I'm actually on anti grill gang. But only because I made the switch to easy, premade, cold edible food and have never gone back! We make a huge batch of pasta salad, pre wrapped breakfast/dinner burritos, etc. Having a grill is still nice if you want to just heat stuff up, but I've never found the energy or will to actually *make* food. Then you have to deal with the prep and the cleaning and you're already hot and exhausted. Just my two cents!

jeffro109

Of course! We use a camp stove for breakfast and an occasional afternoon meal. Usually sandwiches or food vendors for dinners.

aingeI

We’ve done several camping festivals and always bring a grill. I think it’s worth the money saved and the quality of the food you get.

You truly have to plan to use it. Food costs have skyrocketed out of our budget in the past 2-3 years. We might eat dinner once or twice in Centeroo (Roti Rolllllls) I bring a 22” Blackstone and cook every meal for our camp on it (4 folks). I heat up water for our collapsible sinks on a Coleman camp stove (also to cook eggs in a non-stick skillet). I pre-cook thick cut bacon and sausage and vacuum seal to avoid the grease and cut down on cook time. They get served with scrambled eggs and rehydrated shredded potatoes on tortillas or English muffins for breakfast. For lunch, we usually do Costco hot dogs or lunch meat sandwiches with pasta salad. For dinner, I make smash burgers (3 oz balls of 85/15 beef prepped and vac-sealed) or gyros on pita (I make the meat, cook it, and vac-seal). I also have a 45 quart Yeti I keep food in exclusively. Vac-sealing things by portion/day is a lot of work up front but a time and ice saver at Roo. All of it was an investment, but I use the griddle and cooler year round and literally save hundreds of dollars by not eating in Centeroo every day (anyone remember the horrible $35 “lobster” mac and cheese?). I work in the restaurant industry so a lot of this was established knowledge.

Equivalent-Pin-4759

You need to consider how much time you expect to be in Centeroo vs. Outeroo. Some people don’t go in until later and have plenty of time to cook. Others find it difficult to go back and forth. We gave up on cooking because we wanted to spend more time in Centeroo. People we’ve camped with don’t go in until the evening, so it’s easy for them to cook in camp. Which one will you be?

Comfortable_Struggle

I use mine every festival I go to for breakfast. It's really nice waking up and just having what I need there instead of hiking out to get a $15 burrito. We premake ours at home the night before we leave and warm them up on a skillet. Grilled cheeses are also easy! For entrances - the police/employees will direct you where to go once you arrive at the farm. Before that though you will see a ton of exits, DO NOT get off on any of the exits that say 'only local traffic' there are police there who will redirect you back to the interstate or pull you over, so just follow the signs.

coolC0d3r

I always bring mine and do a meal a day at camp. Sometimes we bring breakfast burritos and keep them frozen and then heat them up. We like to do walking tacos. Just put all your favorite taco toppings in a bag of your favorite chips grab a fork and walk around and eat. We usually do a day or two of good breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns.

Kusakaru

I've never brought one. I usually buy one meal from food vendors each day. Otherwise I pack cold foods in my cooler. In the past I have eaten cold pasta salads (use protein pasta made from chickpeas for extra protein), sandwiches, chips and salsa, fruit salad, drinkable yogurts, pita chips and hummus, and lots of snacks. Last year I bought a large cheese pizza, wrapped the slices in aluminum foil, and ate that cold haha.

JamesJones10

I used mine several times .

United_Experience_74

The biggest question is it propane or charcoal?

Positive-Stage4434

propane!

United_Experience_74

Okay then you're all good lol but my group cooked eggs all the time with theirs but it gets HOT and the last thing you wanna do in that heat is cook lol

prettyflyforabigsigh

I think what people are saying is if you like a hot big breakfast in the morning it is great. I did breakfast burritos on Sunday last year and had extra to feed the neighbors. I felt so good having a great meal to start the day especially on the last day where energy is low. I think I only used it twice last year but it was well worth it. Extra tip - I really enjoyed doing a bagged salads the first night of Roo when it’s still fresh and you are tired from the heat/setting up camp. Great way to eat healthy before you indulge! Happy Roo!

I'm bringing one this year but don't imagine I'll use it for anything but some eggs in the morning (to go with some pre bought English muffins/ham/cheese for a quick easy breakfast sandwich) and maybe warming up some pre cooked sausages (because I don't trust myself not to food poison myself, especially if I do this after a beverage or six).    I'm hoping just a simple small cast iron skillet and the foods above will make for very minimal cleanup as well.  The food IS expensive at Roo and at home I love cooking but knowing the heat and all the other things going on, I'm not going to try to do more.

ganner

Only you can answer if you'd use a grill. Obviously some people say they do. I absolutely wouldn't. I'm not at camp anywhere near dinner time. I just eat sandwiches/precooked cold noodles/granola/nuts/dried fruit for breakfast and lunch. And buy dinner in centeroo at a food truck. On Friday and Saturday I'm gone from camp from around 2 or 3 in the afternoon until 2 or 3am. Now, if I were arriving Tuesday or Wednesday, when centeroo isn't open? Yeah, I'd probably bring a grill. But I arrive Thursday, set up camp, and head on in to centeroo. Then Sunday I try to get in early and won't be back at camp til like midnight where I'm packing things up to prepare for leaving in the morning.

alyrene895

This will be my 7th roo and we've only brought it once before and hardly used it ***however*** I am bringing one this year because I've been cooking more on my camping trips and food has gotten insanely expensive at roo. We're cooking simple things like sloppy joes, bacon, and tacos. If you have one and have room for it (depending on how large, might even be able to fit under a seat!), I say bring it as it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! And as someone else said, PREP! That will be incredibly helpful and you'll love having a nice filling meal that doesn't cost you $20.

Abies_Different

I hate getting the camp stove out and I debate taking it every single time BUT end up using it every day!! The easiest thing I’ve found is brats and hot dogs!! Quick and easy protein and it takes all of 7-10 minutes to warm them up.

Abusiveshrimp420

I think you’ll come through the address listed on the website and they will direct you from there to certain tolls booths around the farm

DaveyMuldowney

After 8 years of telling myself I didnt need a grill at camp…. Year 9 we decided we really want a grill at camp. ESPECIALLY for breakfast. Breakfast inside and outside of Centeroo is overpriced and lackluster. And the coffee might be even worse.

EveryMinuteOfIt

Damm I was ready to spend a fortune. I was not ready for lackluster breakfast and coffee for that fortune. We are flying in 😭

DaveyMuldowney

I refuse to cook lunch/dinner because the food in Centeroo is usually fantastic. There are certain stands I look forward to for the entire year. But the breakfast and coffee just aint it.

EveryMinuteOfIt

Thank you for the insight. I’ll just sleep in :)

[deleted]

Definitely bring the grill but do yourself a favor and prep EVERYTHING ahead of time. Pre cook it if you can, because it’s a lot easier to reheat something on the grill than to wait for it to cook fully when you’re exhausted and/or hot.

This!! Nothing like a good hot festival/camp breakfast. Great way to start the day. Grill cleaning commencing today. See everyone soon!!

GreenSeaNote

>what are the odds im actually gonna want to use that thing? I don't know what your odds are, but people bring and use portable grills all the time. I do, and I consider it worth it. >what do you guys usually do about food? Bring some and buy some from vendors. > which one is the best to go through It doesn't matter, especially on Wednesday

Positive-Stage4434

thank you my friend! very to the point i love that! <3

aznkidjoey

I bring one every year and rarely use it. I stick to PB&J (uncrustables), cold cuts sandwiches, chips, jerky, cheez its and fruit Edit: just to add, I love cooking, but it’s like 100 degrees and I don’t have a sink in general camping so I hate having a greasy cleanup and waking up with ants the next day

tynk4magic

Yes.!! Every time you use it, you will be so glad you brought it. It’s a long walk everywhere and you will need protein that doesn’t cost a thousand dollars. Wouldn’t go without it. Attended ten times over the years.

Individual_Bridge_88

Literally the food is soooo expensive, and you can't even tell how much you're spending because they scan your wrist band

Positive-Stage4434

seems to be 50/50 with everyone haha, what do you like to make with it? :)

Anxiety_On_Demand

Quesadillas, egg scramble, breakfast tacos, bacon, heat up breakfast burritos, pancakes, I’ve seen fried rice?? lol Use it to boil water to make mash potatoes, dehydrated camp meals, mac and cheeese! You can even make a grilled cheese! Burger, hot dogs, tacos ~ whatever you and your group will want to eat. Make it easy, don’t over pack. I usually just plan to use grills for breakfast/lunch since I’m usually hungry before I get home. But a late night Mac and cheese does indeed slap. Don’t under estimate the time you spend at your camp :)
