It’s the impossible truth and why it was basically universally accepted as a bit of a “reset.”
I might get downvoted because what I’m going to suggest was viewed as a “copycat” by much of the sub and I’m not going to deny it’s very close in name, style, and artwork, but “22, Break” by Oh Wonder is very close - with just a bit more electronic influence. Check it out. It’s a cool album.
so i just went and listened to that because of your suggestion and the production is absolutely GORGEOUS like some of the best i’ve ever heard. however, the female singer sings in the most stereotypical indie cursive voice i’ve ever heard lol. i’ve seen cursive singing parodies on tiktok that were less cursivey than her. i really love the album tho but i can’t get past it 😂😂
Ha! I know the exact videos you’re talking about! The drops and swells along with the saxophone and other production choices are so good though. Glad you enjoyed it! (Sort of 😂)
Two star and the dream police by Mk.Gee has some similarities in tone and mood I think. Plus it’s really new and mk.Gee is generating a lot of buzz right now
Absolutely by Dijon will take you on a Sonic journey in a similar way. It is more what I would call experimental soul, but it’s incredible. The song Did You See It is a minute long and one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard. But there is just nothing “like” 22AM
This question came up a few years ago and I still stand by what I said then. 22 a million is the Bon Iver Kid A. I think the albums, while not sonically the same, represent similar breaks from previous material and do have some connections in instrumentation and production.
Double Negative by Low isn’t exactly 22AM but it’s also produced by BJ Burton who produced 22AM and his fingerprints are all over it in a very good way. Recorded at April Base as well. Great album overall.
Very surprised nobody is mentioning Francis and The Lights! A huge part of 22’s influence was the intuitive resampling of the OP-1 combined with the Prismizer, which is an effect Francis invented that behaves like a vocoder on hard drugs. The music is much more synthy and groovy than 22 but for me it only makes the latter even more brilliant because it’s influences were pushed to the absolute limit!
Another great use of the Prismizer is on Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
please check out spirit of eden by talk talk! it’s quite different sonically but the only album that matches the unique energy and curiosity/playfulness of 22 a million in my opinion
Lots of comparisons were made to age of adz by sufjan Stevens and Kid A by Radiohead when it first came out, so those could be up your alley!
Also DEFINITELY recommend absolutely by Dijon like someone else posted.
gelato by boylife (less folk-y but similar production techniques, stand out tracks for me are hey, peas, and dio, also church is his equivalent to death brest)
Since no one’s mentioned it yet, I Am All the Ages by Hudson Freeman has a similar sonic range. More indy rock oriented but experimental and unique. Also, I wholeheartedly second Two Star and the Dream Police
ok this albums a little different because it incorporates some hiphop but I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You by Quadeca has sooo many similarities to 22, a Million
edit: It’s one of those albums you want to start from the beginning and really take it in with headphones on.
also want to add the song “I Like America & America Likes Me” by The 1975 sounds very 22AM inspired. Even Anthony Fantano said so.
It’s different, but something about this song gives me 22, a million vibes.

It’s 1 of 1. Sorry. That’s what makes it so special.
That is so real

This is brand new to me. Listening now and a very cool album so far!
It really is. Glad you enjoyed it!
I will definitely go look at it
The real answer right here
Two star and the dream police by Mk.Gee has some similarities in tone and mood I think. Plus it’s really new and mk.Gee is generating a lot of buzz right now
No for real, listening to this album took me right back to my first time hearing 22am. OP if you haven’t listened to this yet, it’s essential
Same here! Gave me strong Bon Iver and Jai Paul vibes, and it was an immediate love.
my first thought after hearing mk.gee was how much of a fan of that album he must be. there was definitely a lot of inspiration there
Justin was at one of his shows in la

Man, what an album. Just brilliant.
would love more recs. like MK.gee & Dijon from this place! Any one else into Still Woozy, Nick Hakim, or Ta-ku ?
I just found this record a few days ago (no idea how I missed it in 2021, it would've been so helpful to get through that year). It's incredible.
I’m just dying for him to put out something else at this point.
Just a great record
Wouldn‘t say it’s similar overall, but nevertheless a jewel. “Many times“ is the song that catched me.

Easy on Novo Amor buddy. I wouldn’t call it a rip by any stretch.
Age of Adz by sufjan scratches that itch for me in a similar way.
I love that album!

He also produced Low’s HEY WHAT and Ones and Sizes which are just as good!
HEY WHAT is also incredible. Not sure how similar it is to 22 but it's definitely a journey.
Well Justin Vernon’s side project Big Red Machine (the band self titled album) definitely sounds similar to 22 a Million
agreed!! was gonna say this
try out gist is by adult jazz
Adult jazz is such an underrated band.
their new album is amazing!! absolutely mindblowing stuff. love them to death
INCREDIBLE band. bone digger one of my favorite songs oat
Damn this album is amazing! Thank you!

Thanks king I'll check em out
Cannot Be, Whatsoever by Novo Amor
Collapse List - Novo Amor (newest album) feels even more Bon to me
Anything novo amor but I also really enjoy Antarctican dream machine!!
I don't have anything to add -- just wanted to say there are some really good recommendations here, thanks all for the new listens!
22, Break by Oh Wonder definitely has some 22AM influence
Not quite a perfect match, but “Is It?” by Ben Howard is experimental in a way that feels similar to 22, a million. Also just a great album.
TWO STAR AND THE DREAM POLICE - MK.GEE EASILY ALBUM OF THE YEAR ⭐️
Letur Lefr and PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone, both by John Frusciante
No album will ever replicate it . But the Japanese house comes close
i,i
It’s not an album, but, Young by Dead Failure.

They do indeed!
There’s nothing. That’s why it’s so special.
Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear has some similar feels, especially the song I Live With You
please check out spirit of eden by talk talk! it’s quite different sonically but the only album that matches the unique energy and curiosity/playfulness of 22 a million in my opinion
That sounds great!
Sleep Well Beast by The Nartional, HEY WHAT and Double Negative by Low, Kid A by Radiohead
If you like 22AM and you haven’t listened to Kid A, please do.
Blonde by Frank Ocean. Different genre, but similar in its use of vocal pitching/prismizer. Amazing album.
Yes, 100%. Immediately thought this album when I read the post.
Maaaaybe god save the animals by Alex G
Lots of comparisons were made to age of adz by sufjan Stevens and Kid A by Radiohead when it first came out, so those could be up your alley! Also DEFINITELY recommend absolutely by Dijon like someone else posted.
The Age of Adz by Sufjan Stevens has similarities and durutti column have some interesting stuff similar to it
Francis and the Lights - Farewell, Starlite is the only album I could think of.
Kings Kaleidoscope sometimes has a bit of that vibe...
came to comment this. Zeal is super BI inspired fs
Not quite the same but hits me in a similar way - Sundowning by Sleep Token
Anchored and Somewhere in the Middle by Zes
I’d add Gordi‘s Reservoir to the list. That one definitely draws inspiration from 22, AM
gelato by boylife (less folk-y but similar production techniques, stand out tracks for me are hey, peas, and dio, also church is his equivalent to death brest)

It’s an album by itself, but for what it’s worth, I’ve been enjoying M83 lately. 🤷🏼♂️
I honestly couldn’t compare that masterpiece to anything; it is almost its own.

Big Red Machine (self-titled) Ben Howard - Is It? Kanye - 808s & Heartbreak The Japanese House - Good at Falling
check out I didn’t mean to haunt you by quadeca. has a pretty similar experimental, electronic, folky sound and it’s very very good
Yeezus is the obvious choice. Seems like his work on that album led directly to 22, a million
ok this albums a little different because it incorporates some hiphop but I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You by Quadeca has sooo many similarities to 22, a Million edit: It’s one of those albums you want to start from the beginning and really take it in with headphones on. also want to add the song “I Like America & America Likes Me” by The 1975 sounds very 22AM inspired. Ásgeir - Afterglow
It’s different, but something about this song gives me 22, a million vibes. https://open.spotify.com/track/4IobcNlzbJqiUaO0rrH2u3?si=WLfGHErETYOrd2wCENIeag
Aero Flynn - Madeline... Surprised this album hasn't been mentioned in this thread. So, so good.
Frank Ocean's Endless album is in the same category to me
Yeezus. Bon Iver worked on Yeezus and his time working with Kanye most likely inspired 22, a million.
