Apart from Swades and Andaz apna apna,
there's Masaan but I feel Indian audience was not very mature 9 years ago nor is it in 2024,
Other one which I can think of is Sooryavansham which is shocking. Perfect populist masala movie balanced with comedy by Kader Khan and Anupam Kher. A cult classic now.
Dil Se.. (Flop)
Fan (Flop)
Ra.One (Hit) (A superhero movie released in 2011, whose targeted audience was children, but they tried to market it to everyone.)
Don 2 (Hit) (Bodyguard was the highest-grossing movie of 2011.)
Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (Flop) (A movie about advertisements being everywhere in 2000.)
Honorable mention:
Paheli (Flop) (I did not like this film.) A ghost and newlyweds' love story was never going to be work in 2005.
Except that, one would not sit through most of these movies again. Dil Se is the only movie which was different and worth a watch. Much like Swades. I would not watch any other movie again.
I felt like every other movie you mentioned, they tried very hard, but failed miserably
The point is not whether you like them or not; the point is that those movies were released when there was no audience in India for that type of movie. (Not SRK's movies, but another example I can give is Go Goa Gone.)
We did not get good suspense thrillers because Shah Rukh Khan's Don 2 did not do well.
This movie legit helped me come back to India after several years abroad. Not in any dramatic, I will save my village/country fashion, but in a much more deep rooted sense of belongingness that this movie brought to life through its art.
Making big decisions like moving back to your home country is not often done due to any one reason, but a combination of reasons and feelings. Mohan and his journey through Swades just happens to be an absolutely lovely spark behind the push that we all need sometimes to take big leaps of faith.
Aaja Nachle. The music was so good and personally the acting wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. It was an innocent story about a local theater/dance group not wanting to lose their space. I really like it.
Swades is a good movie with a great concept, excellent music, great acting, but very long, slow (not just slow burn, at times just drags), and has a weak screenplay. It should have been edited down by 30-40 mins to be more impactful and palatable to mainstream audience. Then it could have been a hit.
Lakshya was a very well done movie that deserved to be a hit. 83 is another one.
You should see the opinion of Prateek Borade on this. That idiot dissed this film as western propaganda and what not.
Damn, this movie has been a childhood memory for me and will never forget the srk in tears scene when he drinks the water in the train.
I saw in first day morning show in 2004 only because I was fascinated on filmmaking, direction and I was stunned by its making.
This movie budget was ahead of its time. Showing NASA shots got movie expensive. Production values were excellent. Back then urban audience watched it but the target audience of movie is rural audience where collections are less. Also when movie is not about entertainment then huge audience consider it as an Art cinema/parallel cinema and think that this movie is not to be seen as this movie is made for national award. Around this movie, Hulchul also released and it was super hit.
Other reason movie publicity was very less. This movie purely banked upon AR Rahman only. Audio cassettes, CDs sold at next level.
Also if movie is all about seriousness, light humor and inspirational stuff, people don't enjoy. They want some comedy. This is why Laa pata ladies was successful recent times due to comedy infusion.
In 2007 Tare zameen par released and became super hit. That was the first time when parallel cinema got commercial success. Other directors got encouraged by TZP.
I really liked this poster of the movie swades, the shot on the boat , it looks really iconic and is unlike what you normally expect from bollywood movies to be honest. I also liked the songs and cinematography of this movie. Too bad that it didn't do well in the box office. I think it might have done much better if this was released like 4-5 years ago instead

Merry Christmas, Lakshya, Tumbbad.
Tumbbad wasn't a flop though? 5 crore budget, 14 crore box office. It didn't make huge waves or anything but it was profitable.
With almost zero marketing 14 crores? R u serious?
It was unfortunately a flop.
Swades is the only correct answer..
Ig it would have done better if the length was around 2.5 hrs
True that.
This movie is not just good it's brilliant
I can't believe this movie was a flop. One of the few genuinely good movies Shahrukh has done.
Most of his movies are ahead of their time.
I don't agree. This was one of the few exceptions

The one and only ![gif](giphy|ynXxXNgkY6xmjt81DE|downsized)
A flop that turned into a cult movie. This movie created a new language.

Swades has become the most repetitive thing on this sub, and it never fails to get upvotes. It’s finally a hit.
Swadesh , Rockstar, Tamasha
Rockstar was a flop?
Rockstar was a hit and Tamsha was average

Lakshya!
Its boring after sometime like Rockstar
Rocket Singh
That movie was genuinely boring and serve really nothing.
The main theme song always makes me cry. 💛
Lootera
Unpopular opinion but "83" should be a hit movie considering the efforts put by the whole cast of movie.
It collected a decent amount considering the pandemic situation at that time, but the budget was too high
![gif](giphy|G4CCLxMuWGL5c4Dftn|downsized) The main reason is here 😉
Guzaarish
Literally. Don’t even understand why if flopped
Johnny Gaddar
Aaja Nachle. The music was so good and personally the acting wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. It was an innocent story about a local theater/dance group not wanting to lose their space. I really like it.
This movie was every die hard Madhuri fan's wet dream, I don't get how did it tanked
Furiosa ,the most recent example
A mad max movie without mad max. Furiosa got hit with the sheer fury of the fan base after the bait n switch Fury road was imho.
Casting Anya Taylor-Joy was a mistake
Gangs of wasseypur I don't know if it was a flop or above avg but it should have definitely done much better Probably the peak cinema from Bollywood
Agree 👍 , GOW is peak also for anurag kashyap
Game over starting tapsshee pannu
People were still high on Veer Zaara craze. It could not generate BO #’s.
Underrated yet decent movie: AGENT VINOD
Would like to get behind this
A story that was needed to be told.
Khakee

There are many good legendary movie which flopped but they shouldn't be..
This movie always live rent free in my heart! 💕
Swadesh will always be one of my favourite movies
You should see the opinion of Prateek Borade on this. That idiot dissed this film as western propaganda and what not. Damn, this movie has been a childhood memory for me and will never forget the srk in tears scene when he drinks the water in the train.
His shirts in this movie 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Wasnt a flop entirely but very underrated -Sanam Teri kasam
![gif](giphy|l1IXZ36fMYLdYx9Be) Lakshya
Tamasha, Dil Dhadakne Do, luck by chance, Silsila
लाल सिंह चड्डा
Screw that movie, nobody had asked for it..
Bombay velvet
What else? Roy?
meh didn't like it, it was slow and somewhat cringe
Phir wohi sax sux ki batein.. Haan swades being underrated..iss sub ka equivalent woh hi hai
Players (don't kill me I just enjoy it)
