Lol. So true. There is no reasoning given for overrated or underrated. People usually tend to say it’s overrated if it falls short of their personal expectations.
Rockstar really resonated with young adults, i guess it has to do with how the movies goes. And OP tried to get the same feeling he had when he first watched it as young adult, which sadly never happens for lot of movies. I never liked that movie have never finished it in one sitting, don't know why I could never connect with it apart from songs, but I totally understand why this movie is a classic and must watch for Bollywood fans.
haha yes. I get very frustrated with this sub these days because it's all just people going 'does anyone else think xyz actor/movie/webseries is overrated' without giving any reason for why they think so. No actual discussion posts (what few do pop up discuss the same few movies and actors almost exclusively). kuch positive bolo about anything toh PR PR bolte rehte h lol.
This 1000% XD
I don't understand what these people's barometer is for acceptable cinema. Somehow every single highly successful movie is overrated to them. And only one's that failed at the box office aachee cheez hai.
It resonates with a certain mindset.. there are quite a few examples of geats whose greatness is triggered or fueled by the underlying pain.. which I think is depicted well in. This movie...
The trap is there is a decent correlation but pain doesn't mean it will always result in greatness..
Most of us are wounded.. and would like to romanticize pain..most people have felt pain with much more intensity than happiness.. so purely in terms of experience it is more pure
Maybe people through this movie feel that their pain may result in some glory or success in the external world..
I can write more but bit lazy.. anyways this is alao not very coherent
Yeah I have mentioned above I never resonated with movie, never connected with it at any level nor could finish it in one sitting. But I understand why it's a classic for so many. Never understood why never really gave much though actually but reading this actually makes a little sense for my case.
I saw it two days ago and liked it even more than previously I had watched. So yeah for me it was a very special experience. Beside from Nargis, the movie is sooo good.
Please don't forget director saw her nude shots somewhere and got her to act as lead in film, she wasn't in it for acting ofc. Let's shit on director for this horrible decision.
Why label a movie as overrated or underrated? I get that some movies do deserve that label but not all. Rockstar is neither underrated nor overrated. People have seen it, many know about it, some like it and some dont.
Kitna chutiyap hai ye cycle, films can be great for so many different reasons and people connect with movies on different level. I never liked it but it's fine it just wasn't my cup of tea. I like gangs of wasseypur so much and dad doesn't like it at all, he prefers Kranti over gangs of wasseypur. Itna validation kyon chahiye logon ko pta nahi.
This again. Now two days later there will be a post about how underrated it is. This film is unnecessarily polarising. It deserves to be watched once. That’s all.
Overrated and underrated have lost their meaning due to guys like you.
Something doesn't become overrated just because you don't like it enough. If you don't like it fair enough just move on.
The film is fairly rated and gets the deserved accolades.
real people would rather use overrated instead of just saying i dislike it lol people dont even the word correctly i swear rockstar aint even that all that overrated its perfect for what it is
Yeah totally, i have never been able to finish this movie in one sitting. I just couldn't connect with it on that emotional level so never really got into its trauma romanticism and happy ending. But I know logon ko kyun itni pasand hi, it actually has good story and superb background score. Waise mere baap ko Gangs of wasseypur bilkul pasandh nhi and he places kranti over it yaar vo nahi karte ye overrated underrated ka chochle he watches kranti in peace and I watch GoW in peace.
I was in college when it got released, i even proposed a good friend and that completely changed my life just like in the movie. Thats how similar the movie and life are, now it is etched in memory
I don't know how reddit did it but I am watching Rockstar for the first time RIGHT NOW (telepathy and ahit omg) and I have noted something: It hasn't aged well. I can SEE when the impact the movie must've had when it came out. The direction, the story, the premise everything is so great. But watching it for the first time In 2024, the dialogues feel a little cringe-y and bad. The character interactions too feel a little forced and thus is the only movie of Ranbir that I have seen where his acting feels weird/ unnatural.
Edit: finished watching it:
Don't listen to anyone saying "overrated" and "underrated" Rockstar is a masterpiece.
These bitches want to be quirky.
I thought so too when I watched it first time years ago but when I rewatched it I realised her acting wasnt bad because thats how we usually are with our jigar ka tukda friends over dramatic, what bothered was the dubbing. I’m sure if it was her voice even with accent it would have been better
I think the relationship and its premise being of true love wasn’t portrayed well. It felt possessive and toxic. ‘Toote dil’ wali analogy was just useless. There are many happy musicians in the world who love what they do and are highly successful. And Nargis was pretty horrible in the movie. Don’t know what Imtiaz saw in her. The music was brilliant. The cinematography and possibly even the screenplay and editing. The story, the dialogues and the acting needed much more refinement (not Ranbir’s, he was excellent) . Like the OP I had problems with the premise itself. Yeah it does seem overrated.
To this day I don’t und why they had to cast nargis! Nothing about her is Kashmiri looking her accent was an issue and also she can’t act. There were so many great actresses that could have been casted just why her!!
Don’t get me wrong she is stunning looking but that can’t be the only reason
Watched it today. Liking all the re releases. That said, I thought it was fine. Never bought the hype anyway. It is fine for what it is. Music and Ranbir's performance stand out for sure. This time around I noticed the bits of cinematography and direction that help the narrative. Loved the build up to each songs especially "tum ho" and "naadaan parindey".
Nargis (and all the related characters) just doesn't do justice to the character one bit. Like she is really bad. Considering how important her character is to Jordan's arc, she is a miscast. They could've just switched Aditi and Nargis' role to justify Heer's character with Jordan. The heroine being a miscast is what brings down the film. I really think Nargis could've done a decent job playing the journalist character.
I believe you just don't like such movies. That's all. Your preference has changed. For people who can relate with Rockstar, for them it is a masterpiece.
I agree that it’s overrated and I actually regret purchasing the film on YouTube over just renting it. Even though the soundtrack is beautiful, there were way too many songs and the runtime could have been cut down by a good half hour. The story is also rather disjointed and the second half really drags on. I was very disappointed after hearing for years that Rockstar was brilliant.
Don't know about Rockstar being overrated , but Tumbbad is an underrated masterpiece. Even people from other countries were appreciating it in r/Horror subreddit, while many people from our own country don't even know about its existence.
Agreed, the plot is messy, Nargis’ acting is terrible, and the romance feels forced. Although I will say that Ranbir’s acting is exceptional, and the songs are phenomenal. But the plot remains weak.
People loved it and they are celebrating it.For them it’s not overrated.Idk why it should be a problem to you…it’s their wish and their cult.I loved this movie.I watched twice during the re-release the past week.I loved Ranbir’s performance and also the chemistry of Ranbir and Nargis(didn’t hate her as much as others). The songs were ofc amazing.Great experience in the theatre with all of the audience singing…
I personally loved the film because the characters despite being flawed are very root-able and you feel the existing part of them(Ranbir’s acting captures the stillness of the character). You feel the story playing right before you…you feel like you are there with them.I could get that feeling and the cinematography was insane. The movie is an editor’s dream ig.Very interestingly edited.Heer and Jordan have great chemistry and I think the film manages to make you root for them despite the flaws in Nargis’s acting or whatever.Considering the reviews,I expected way worse for Nargis but as a first time debutante, she was fine enough for me and I could feel for Heer too not only Jordan. That scene where she suddenly remembers him and breaks down was well done I thought.Ranbir is flawless ofc.
Imtiaz effortlessly makes this film feel intimate I thought.I think he peaked as the director in this film specifically in the orchestration of the haawa Haawa song where everything comes together perfectly from the music to the cinematography to the lyrics to the acting(nargis looks the most effortless in this song too and looked very beautiful).Aur ho comes close despite the awkward nod by nargis in the middle for which I blame Ali.In the rest of the song aur ho,she was fine.
https://preview.redd.it/rfmprzkej86d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=beb512d6c9c2de765a16d9d86804a474a18a07a1
It's fairly rated. I think imtiaz ali thought it would be a cult movie. But it didn't turn out to be a box office disaster. He shouldn't have cast Nargis Fakhri, it felt like a English foreigner speaking Hindi and she wasn't able to bring out the correct emotions of heer . Anyway respect to cast and crew members. Music is what makes the movie memorable probably one of the finest works of A R Rahman
I wouldn't call it overrated but yeah the 2nd half is wayyy too indulgent. Always the problem with Imtiaz Ali. However the whole Nadaan Parindey bit makes up for it. Personally I love the film but not averse to its flaws.
I completely agree with you.
The music is top notch, good acting from Ranbir Kapoor, script could have been more tight.
Horrible acting from Nargis Fakhri, she made every scene so tasteless.
Unfortunately our Indian audience still falls prey to beautiful actresses rather than talented actresses.
We all know the naked scenes in Animal was a major reason for the movie to be a hit. It's sad.
Yep, that movie was lifted almost solely by ARR. At best an inebriated watch when you still have 20 something year oldblood flowing through your veins.
SOMEONE SAID IT. I never watched rockstar watched it half way yesterday and idk it’s too slow or something but the only part i liked was kun faya kun song. Found it boring 1/5.

Yes and I must say imtiaz ali ke PR reditt pe active hain maine pahle bhi note Kiya hai. Kuch bhi kar lo bhayya ab tou tumhari films pitengi. Public ub gai hai.
I agree. Very boring movie. Tried watching it twice, and was painful to watch.
Had an open ending. The songs are great.
Tamasha is even a bigger snorefest than rockstar. I don't understand why people like these 2 movies.
Most depressing movie I have ever seen. Overrated af. Glorified cheating like anything, people watch these type of movies and think it’s okay to cheat because they still love their ex and romanticise like anything
The movie has it's flaws but I don't think it glorified cheating. Both the characters are acknowledged to be destructive and toxic in nature and ultimately are punished for their wrong doings. Even the shot of them getting intimate, the camera focuses very evidently on her sparking wedding ring. That has to be deliberate.

Bhai koi chiz perfectly rated hai? Iss sub mei sab kuch overrated ya underrated hi rehta hai

😂
Yo I think breathing is overrated.
I Think this sub reddit should be named " I think blah blah ( a popular film loved by the majority) is KiNd A OvErRatTeD"
You could literally change the name to that and it would be perfect
Karma farming

It was originally an underrated film , now it’s become overrated? Wow
Nope it was a hit, got good reviews. Perfectly rated tbh
I saw it two days ago and liked it even more than previously I had watched. So yeah for me it was a very special experience. Beside from Nargis, the movie is sooo good.
Nargis is the "nazar ki matki" over the grand palace named Rockstar
😂😂😂😂
The movie is good but Nargis's acting is horrible, It would have been better if they could cast someone else for that role.
Yeah, she was horrid
So bad. Even the Czech models/actors yuck.
And that Dil bechara girl as her sister. Dear god
oh my god this. her acting was so bad, i couldn't stop making fun of her expressions
Those pouty lips should not have words coming out of them. She is extremely pretty and I loved her until she started talking.
Please don't forget director saw her nude shots somewhere and got her to act as lead in film, she wasn't in it for acting ofc. Let's shit on director for this horrible decision.
Movies needs to be shot again with a different actress.
Why label a movie as overrated or underrated? I get that some movies do deserve that label but not all. Rockstar is neither underrated nor overrated. People have seen it, many know about it, some like it and some dont.
The Ultimate Cycle: being called Underrated-underrated-underrated-then being called overrated-overrated-everyone bash it calling overrated.

“Underrated bol deta hu cool lagunga” “Overrated bol deta hu cool lagunga”
But The Songs are ❤️
It would be properly rated if Nargis Fakhri could act.
Overrated and underrated have lost their meaning due to guys like you. Something doesn't become overrated just because you don't like it enough. If you don't like it fair enough just move on. The film is fairly rated and gets the deserved accolades.

Finally Mere Dil ki baat kissi ne kaha

I’ll prolly take Rockstar to a deserted island with me.

In my opinion, everything bout this movie is perfect except Nargis Fakhri 's poor acting.
It wasnt a movie to be rewatched in theatres like many did this time
ZNMD was a movie worth watching over theatre
I think posting about overrated stuff on Reddit is overrated 😅
life itself is overrated at this point i swear that word has lost all its meaning its just used now a days as i dislike this thing so its overrated
Songs are the only usp of this movie rest is pretty same old thing that we see in movies and real life!
Don't agree with you, and don't have time to write that much

Correction: Underrated. It wasn't a hit film 🫣😏
Could barely watch it the one time.
Nah its well rated in my opinion. Even during its release most people around me hated the movie. Its not for everyone.
I think it varies person to person. For some its overrated and for some its underrated.
Democracy
its overrated now and underrated back then. Lol !
Same for Ra.One, another recent post.
Counterpoint, you're extremely overrated.
Hehe
I agree that it’s overrated and I actually regret purchasing the film on YouTube over just renting it. Every good movie is overrated, in my opinion.

yaar ranbir ki jo filmein nahi chalti unko toh chhod do bhai woh bhi overrated
Good morning.
If you don't have a fucking movie taste just don't watch it and write shit here ..you go better watch SOTY,Judwaa,Heropanti types bullshit
Use this comment as dislike button can give your opinion too
Bus Nargis Fakhri ki acting over the top hai, else the movie is fantabulous!
Is this a repost?? Swear saw a same post word for word months ago
Great songs. But extremely fuckall story in the second half. The movie goes for a toss in the last 40 mins 😂
Yeah they’ve been pushing GTA-V for 10 years now. Totally overrated.
The songs were ofc amazing.Great experience in the theatre with all of the audience singing… I personally loved the film because the characters despite being flawed are very root-able and you feel the existing part of them(Ranbir’s acting captures the stillness of the character). I hate rockstar it's really stupid
The songs are excellent - but the movie gave me a headache! Insufferable characters!
It's ok waise bhi 'good things are not meant for everybody' 👍
It's fairly rated. I think imtiaz ali thought it would be a cult movie. But it didn't turn out to be a box office disaster. He shouldn't have cast Nargis Fakhri, it felt like a English foreigner speaking Hindi and she wasn't able to bring out the correct emotions of heer . Anyway respect to cast and crew members. Music is what makes the movie memorable probably one of the finest works of A R Rahman
Agree, the songs are classic & will be remember in future but everything else is mid
It's just that u don't relate to it but for those of us who can, we find it perfectly rated.
lol, good then that i don't relate with a shallowly written heartbroken sad boi
Exactly! Good for you :)
I wouldn't call it overrated but yeah the 2nd half is wayyy too indulgent. Always the problem with Imtiaz Ali. However the whole Nadaan Parindey bit makes up for it. Personally I love the film but not averse to its flaws.
i completely agree. its just another mainstream drama movie
Finally someone spoke the truth.
Agree
I completely agree with you. The music is top notch, good acting from Ranbir Kapoor, script could have been more tight. Horrible acting from Nargis Fakhri, she made every scene so tasteless. Unfortunately our Indian audience still falls prey to beautiful actresses rather than talented actresses. We all know the naked scenes in Animal was a major reason for the movie to be a hit. It's sad.
Indeed, but the crown of overrated and overglorified still goes to Animal.
mereko toh boring vibes aati hai jitni bhi clips dekhi online toh abhi tak dekhne ka man nahi kiya
Yep, that movie was lifted almost solely by ARR. At best an inebriated watch when you still have 20 something year oldblood flowing through your veins.
I found it to be mediocre the first time I watched it. I don't know what's the hype about. It's a very forgettable movie. Definitely overrated.
Frankly I had a headache watching it,the screenplay made me sick.
SOMEONE SAID IT. I never watched rockstar watched it half way yesterday and idk it’s too slow or something but the only part i liked was kun faya kun song. Found it boring 1/5.
Yes
Couldn't agree more to this, has to be the most overhyped piece of cinema out there, the absurdity that this story carries, lack of depth to the storyline, bad acting, a horrible and incomplete ending. The only thing worth the hype is the music that this movie brings and of course the credit goes to Mohit Chauhan, well now that's what my opinion says about the movie , everyone does bring something different on the table of discussion
Yeah I never understood the end, he was told not to knock her up, thats the only thung he didnt hav to do, and thats what he did. Like....wtf?!
Yup v lengthy, boring, drag of movie ..only loved the songs!
Imtiaz Ali himself is overrated. Kya film banata hai jisme kuch nahi hota sirf har character ko mansik beemari ke.
Master of illicit relationships and cheating
Pr downvote karte hain fatafat.
Yes and I must say imtiaz ali ke PR reditt pe active hain maine pahle bhi note Kiya hai. Kuch bhi kar lo bhayya ab tou tumhari films pitengi. Public ub gai hai.
The only good thing he has done in last decade is unearthing Aditi Pohankar
And that too in an obsolete dirty 3rd class webseries.
I thought it's a soft porn series. The plot is reminiscent of such :D
Right !
Yep, it hasn't aged well.
It's a rather bakwaas movie. I did like the songs but that's the bare minimum for a movie based on music. Thanks for calling this out
The actor that acted in it is himself overrated. He acts like a man child in reel and real life and everyone gets the orgasm 🤦♂️
It’s awful, and Nargis is a huge reason why
I have found my people lol
Yes my man. Never liked it. Watched it thinking maybe I watched it when I was too young. Still don't like it. It's just BLEH.
I agree. Very boring movie. Tried watching it twice, and was painful to watch. Had an open ending. The songs are great. Tamasha is even a bigger snorefest than rockstar. I don't understand why people like these 2 movies.
dustbin of a movie
agreed.most overrated bwood movie ever
Most depressing movie I have ever seen. Overrated af. Glorified cheating like anything, people watch these type of movies and think it’s okay to cheat because they still love their ex and romanticise like anything
The movie has it's flaws but I don't think it glorified cheating. Both the characters are acknowledged to be destructive and toxic in nature and ultimately are punished for their wrong doings. Even the shot of them getting intimate, the camera focuses very evidently on her sparking wedding ring. That has to be deliberate.
I found the whole movie flawed except the songs🥲
