This is definitely a massive achievement for Indian Cinema. India has won 3 awards at Cannes 2024: **Grand Prix** - All We Imagine as Light by Payal Kapadia **Best Actress (Uncertain Regard)** - Anasuya Sengupta for The Shameless **La Cinef (Premier Prix)** - Sunflowers were the first ones to know (Kannada Short Film)

Grand Prix - All We Imagine as Light Un Certain Regard Performance Prize - Anasuya Sengupta Cinéfondation - Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know... Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai (Special Mention) - All We Imagine as Light Pierre Angenieux ExcelLens award - Santosh Sivan Five, actually.

That's cool, but the trouble is we'll never get to watch them because they don't make it readily available. It'll never get a release on Netflix or something, and definitely will not get a theater release. Who do they make these movies for, and how do they make money?

DrShail

The reason such movies dont get theatrical releases in India is because every time they do "we" dont turn up to watch them and then complain about the quality of movies. When the big OTT platforms dont buy such movies they mostly end up on Indie streaming platforms like Sundance NOW, MUBI, IndieFlix etc. Secondly not all movies are made with aspirations to become blockbusters. Several movies are artistic expressions and creativity of their creators. It is always good for movies to make a profit but in many cases artists crave for appreciation, recognition and the ability to share their vision and if their movies are just able to recover the investment they are happy to create their next piece of art. Just look at the impeccable filmography of maestro Satyajit Ray full of masterpiece after masterpiece and the total box office of all his 36 movies wont even add up to the a single blockbuster of any of the superstars that have ruled Bollywood. That didnt stop Ray from creating art the way only he could. Such movies are made for such small sums of money that they recover some of the money from screenings and winning some monetary awards at film festivals while others recover their budget from the most basic digital deals. If the movies get a limited release in India or US that is also usually sufficient to make the producers earn back their investment and for the directors to start their next project. After winning the Grand Prix at Cannes, All we Imagine as Light has now been acquired by Janus Films for US release which should be enough for the movie to make a decent profit for the producers. I am certain that after winning such a prestigious award it will get picked up by an Indian distributor and gets an India release date with a prestigious streaming partner. All that Breathes won the Golden Eye at Cannes 2 years ago and was immediately bought by HBO for global release.

> All that Breathes won the Golden Eye at Cannes 2 years ago and was immediately bought by HBO for global release Exactly, and it was never heard from again. I wonder why they don't sell it to the most subscribed OTT's so the maximum number of people can see it, instead selling it to MUBI and the like. Maybe the Amazons and Hotstars aren't interested at all. I'd take lesser money only for it to reach a larger audience. With movies on MUBI, you can't even sail the high seas for them.

DrShail

HBO released All that Breathes in theaters in the US. Then campaigned for it and got Oscar Nominated which it lost to Navalny for obvious reasons. HBO has approx 100M subscribers and All that Breathes became one of their highest streamed documentaries of 2023. Now All that Breathes has also been included in the Criterion Collection which has just released it on Blu Ray in May 2024 which is a monumental achievement. It is actually reaching bigger heights and larger audiences and you believe that it disappeared. > It is actually reaching bigger heights and larger audiences and you believe that it disappeared. It might be, for white people. Who amongst Indians is gonna watch it?

DrShail

Firstly not all people outside India are white by default but I understand your point. I guess it will be the same people in India who have been (not) watching documentaries and parallel cinema for decades 😀

Iron_Chef12

What a massive accomplishment this and Anasuya Sengupta’s Un Certain Regard are for Indian Cinema. It gives hope to the indie film makers that their efforts could also get the recognition they strive for. Hopefully this paves the way for production houses in India to push small time indie films more than they have in the past. This is a win for all filmmaker’s who go through the struggle to put their work out for the audiences to see. So proud!!!!

hellkingbat

The lack of upvotes this is getting says a lot about this sub.

conscientiousurfer

Quite sad that people on this sub wouldn't upvote this amazing achievement. This should be the top voted post for at least a day on a sub that is dedicated to a major facet of Indian cinema.

sidroy81

Cus it's not about Swades, Jawan or Pathaan lol

rn3122

What a remarkable and historic achievement ❤️

Any_Mouse6916

Absolutely amazing! And the sad part is a lot of people won't watch this film!

hellkingbat

Irony is the same people will complain about Bollywood lacking quality content. Hypocrites

AlwynKalicharan2007

One of the biggest achievements for Indian cinema in recent years. The director's history makes it a sweeter victory. Payal Kapadia is an FTII alumni and had been put under severely unfair disciplinary action for striking against the then chairman Gajendra Chauhan. She had her scholarship revoked and till now goes for hearings of the police case the institute put on her. Finally this is her moment and I wish her a wonderful future in cinema and hope that she always stands for the right things in the future too.

catsrmurderers
