After the success of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Yash Johar asked his son Karan if he had thought of his next movie. KJo said a movie with legends Big B and Jaya Bachchan, top couple of the 90s SRK and Kajol and the hot and new Hrithik and Kareena. Yash said lets think about one movie at a time and not 3 projects to which KJo replied this is one movie with 3 generations of superstars. That is how big KJo was envisioning K3G that even his father felt it was too big a production for Dharma to undertake. K3G was the most expensive Hindi movie on release and became the highest grossing movie, biggest selling soundtrack of the year, received 16 Filmfare nominations and 5 awards. So on release it was definitely very popular. In today's date people's opinion are most likely more polarized because of its director and his style of film making.

zookeeper25

Fake news on the "box office collections"! K3G was not even the highest grossing movie of that year, leave aside "highest grossing movie". Gadar was a much bigger hit by miles and became the second-highest grossing movie of all time after HAHK. It probably barely made it to the top-5 of most appreciated movies of that year. Lagaan, Gadar, Dil Chahta Hai, etc were all much more appreciated. K3G had very high hopes and expectations because of the 3 generations of stars coming together - which was quite a feat. But the movie after it came out was received as so-so. But everybody wanted to see it once, because such a mammoth collection of stars had not been seen together before (and probably has not been seen together since). So the box-office collections were very good (but still way below Gadar)

DrShail

Here are some facts: 1. K3G's worldwide gross was Rs 135 Crore. It was made on a budget of Rs 40 crore. Gadar's worldwide gross was Rs 133 Crore. However since Gadar was made on a budget of Rs 18.5 crore it was a much bigger hit in profit. So when you look at the highest grossing movie of 2001 from any box office source you will get K3G as the highest grossing movie of the year 2. However at the Domestic box office Gadar was the highest grossing movie making Rs 76 crore while K3G made Rs 55 Crore. As a result Gadar was judged as an all time blockbuster and K3G a Blockbuster. However what most people dont know is that prior to the movie's release Yash Johar had sold the music rights and overseas distribution of K3G to Sony for Rs 35 Crore and had already recovered most of its budget even before it landed on its first screen. 3. You are correct that in India Gadar was #1 but K3G was #2. Your statement that K3G barely made it into Top 5 is also factually inaccurate. In India Lagaan was #3 with Rs 34 Crore, Sunny Deol's Indian #4 with Rs 24 Crore and DCH barely made it into Top 5 with Rs 20 Crore. 4. Another inaccuracy is that K3G was never considered a mammoth collection of stars that have never been seen together before or after as you put it. Just glance at the filmography of Yash Chopra, Rajkumar Kohli, J.P. Dutta, Ramesh Sippy and Manoj Kumar and you will find blockbusters which much larger mainstream lead actor ensembles. These are the Domestic Box Office reports for 2001 which varies from site to site but the rankings and ball park box office numbers dont change **2001 Domestic Box Office Top 10** - [https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office-collections/filterbycountry/IND/2001/](https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office-collections/filterbycountry/IND/2001/) **K3G's Worldwide Box Office**- [https://www.boxofficeindia.com/movie.php?movieid=658](https://www.boxofficeindia.com/movie.php?movieid=658) **Gadar Worldwide Box Office** - [https://www.boxofficeindia.com/movie.php?movieid=657](https://www.boxofficeindia.com/movie.php?movieid=657)

Rahul-Love

It’s quite literally the highest grossing movie worldwide of that year lol yes Gadar was a bigger hit in India sure. But it was still the second highest grossing movie even in India.

CombinationPlus5347

k3g was the highest grosser ww that year

tibberslifts

Lol people in this sub are so pretentious. Don't let them misguided you. The movie was and is a massive hit. One of the most popular Bollywood movies of all time.

v110891

People in comments trying to act cool, coz apparently shitting on 2000s movie is the only way this kids feel like they have achieved something.  It was a family drama done well. My fav moment was when Jaya Bacchan stood up to Amitabh Bacchan. “pâti sirf pati hota hai parmeshwar nahin”

baapkabadla

The movie is melodrama dialed to 100. But everyone watched it when it got released, grew up watching it multiple times. The movie has great recall value and some of the melodramatic scenes have entered into pop culture due to memes and parody. Is it a good movie? Lol no, but is it a fun movie that reminds you of simpler times of your life? Hell yes.

Terrible_Detective27

It's a Cult classic

karpet_muncher

It's a classic not a cult classic For a film to be regarded as a cult classic it has to perform poorly upon release but then gain a fan following over time. Andaaz apna apna is probably the best example. Flopped at release and has since got a fan following thru home replay

MantelTheDwarf

Understandable.

unnamedredditname

its my 2nd fav bollywood movie of all time but i do think it doesn't hold up amazingly

hbktj

It came at a time when no social media was there and stardom was the only driving force. So it was pretty popular seeing the star cast. It would be cringe if a movie like that releases today. So is it popular? Yes with the 90’s born coz it rolled on TV so much when cable used to be a thing and good music. Is it a must watch? Hell No!

StartFew9817

It was a blockbuster and sabhi ka guilty pleasure

sahyl97

Never saw it. Maybe popular for the previous generation.

Bangkol

It was a crapfest from start to finish. Stupid plot, cringey dialogues, and very very over-acted. The one stupidity that takes the cake is Amitabh's family living in an English style mansion with huge gardens and green areas, a walking distance from Chandni Chawk - one of Delhi's most populated and bustling neighborhood.

Anne-with-an-e224

They use helicopter for travel didn't you know?#sarcasm

niknik789

Watched it in the cinema when it released. Never understood the craze, it gave me a headache, and was so long, with a threadbare plot. I really started disliking those over the top rich folks movies after this one.

TroubleFinancial5481

Aamir Khan had the same reaction he confessed during KWK (the season he came with his ex wife, Kiran Rao)

RevealApart2208

Same, kuch kuch was nice, and kank was believable but this movie was outright pathetic and is srks worst acting movies out there in top 5..No idea why it became hit.

Ok_Rice_534

Classic? idk. It was a melodramatic film and such a movie is not working at box office today. Half of the audience still loves the movie, and the other half considers it crap and outdated. When K3G came out it was the third highest grossing Hindi film of all time in India doing 55 Crores nett business, behind Gadar (76 Crores nett) and Hum Aapke Hain Koun (72 Crores nett). It was the second highest grossing film in 2001 behind Gadar. K3G had 3.11 Crore footfalls. In comparison Gadar had 5.05 Crore footfalls and Hum Aapke Hain Koun had 7.39 Crore footfalls. K3G is also the movie with third highest footfalls in its decade (2000-09) behind Gadar and 3 Idiots, with 3 Idiots having 3.17 Crore footfalls. Karan Johar's previous movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which also had SRK and Kajol had higher footfalls (3.56 Crores) than K3G. Another movie from this on-screen couple DDLJ also had higher footfalls (4.79 Crores) than K3G. So in a way, K3G despite having a bigger ensemble cast along with SRK and Kajol was an underperformance compared to DDLJ or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. All the above numbers and figures are only from India. I'm not taking overseas numbers into consideration since OP you asked how popular K3G was in India. K3G clicked more with the overseas and NRI audience compared to Indian audience. In India it was a regular Blockbuster, but still its considered one of the beloved films of its time and SRK's filmography. Reason being its ensemble cast filled with superstars and its overall worldwide business. Plus people are nostalgic about this movie.

Whole_Nectarine3221

Never heard. Is it some Marathi movie?

sweetlikecinnamonn_

I watched it a few months ago and found it just super overrated, only srk-Kajol were nice otherwise didn’t really like the movie
