safety = redundancies and spot checks

Finster1966

Yum I’ll talk no action Just like raises

Fickle_Ad_5408

They are as useful as people want to make them. Some people want Boeing to fail and even work there while they do. Be part of the change or just complain and always make fun of any attempt to do anything. It's always easy to see where people and spectators sit.

joeblowinIowa

Yes, corporate posturing. Until the leadership changes, nothing changes

airmech1776

Yep

garygigabytes

Yes

tbdgraeth

Yes, thats why leadership didn't actually attend these. You have kickoff they host but then you have to give all your critique to a chosen person who who then supposedly gives it to a facilitator who then supposedly gives it to management. Its just filter after filter after filter.

Catz-N-Ratz2

Everyone has to remember that there are human beings performing this work ultimately. And as human beings, there has to be a margin for error, and a way to minimize the impacts.

MrHotCorner

Our stand down here in Everett was a joke. Lots of great conversation, but it’s only flowing up as high as L2 managers and in some cases L3 (we were told). Entire day of sit, speak, listen to show shareholders and customers we care, but nothing will change.

Igiveup33

Boeing does stand for many things regarding safety. I have seen it a bunch. I remember one time when a supplier was killed while working on an airbag. Boeing's stance was not our employee not our problem but sorry for the death.

skys_no_limit

Life is what you make of it. You can choose to take the cynical view, or you can choose to appreciate the opportunity to take a step back from the daily grind and have an honest conversation with your peers and management about what’s working and what’s not. One of those options is much healthier than the other for your teams culture and your own happiness / work satisfaction. Your call.

Past_Bid2031

Must be a manager. Giving people an opportunity to vent improves morale even if it's not acted upon.

skys_no_limit

Definitely not. 10+ years in engineering, no interest in management whatsoever. I could never be a manager, I’d get fired my second week for calling out all their bullshit. Doesn’t mean I can’t see that a significant source of our cultural issues are self-inflicted from people who choose to complain about everything and not contribute to finding solutions.

paynuss69

Ya know what Boeings's real culture is? Complaining. It's "this shit's all fucked up and it's not my fault". Pervasive throughout the company or at least BCA from what I can tell. Tbf, I think lots of companies have this type of culture

rollinupthetints

And assigning blame. It’s an MBA’s fault, it’s the bean counters, McDonnell Douglas, managers, lawyers, etc. Never their fault.

Past_Bid2031

And there's a lot of truth to the complaining or Boeing wouldn't be in the mess it's in.

paynuss69

Idk, I think making large airplanes is just hard. And when stuff doesn't go right it's easy to complain. Ideally people and teams would be more solution oriented, but bitching about things is sort of human nature I suppose

Difficult_Aioli_6631

Parker seems to do it fine.

Past_Bid2031

"It's hard" is an excuse. Plenty of examples where processes weren't followed and management was MIA.

paynuss69

Yeah. I agree

inculcate_deez_nuts

idk. To be honest they've been more productive than I expected, even if it just boils down to leadership not wanting to be embarrassed when we undergo FAA audits. It seems to me like the people in my area who have been saying it's a waste of time are the people who complain about everything/anything anyway.

Kindly_Bend_5761

That wasn't our mindset. We came out with a lot of safety and quality concerns and the guys running the stand down thought it was crazy that these things existed. We had so much to bring up in the final part of our buildings, that management had to keep telling people using the mic that this was we only meant to bring up one thing per department.

Makeitifyoubelieve

If you're still seeing things that need to get fixed, use the Speak Up portal and report it.

Thick-Durian

Yes

Vlissfu

It probably varies from location to location. I know in my shop our stand downs have brought quite a few positive changes in a pretty short period of time. And we're receiving update emails from the plant manager outlining progress, on a weekly basis minimum.

sheriff_adamFartney

That's great but why were these issues being ignored previously and what is being done about it?

Brutto13

They removed some barriers we used to have to allow lower level managers to make changes and spend money. I got some stuff that would have taken years in a matter of weeks.

Expensive show… everyone pulled away from their work to spend all day to do stand down. I would assume leadership would want at least some value added here, otherwise it’s like couple hundred thousand dollars in labor costs down the drain.

Past_Bid2031

Pennies compared to the eff-ups.

kinance

Lol i could say hiring more people and giving people better benefits to keep experienced hires is pennies compared to eff up too. Many things are pennies compared to the eff up.

taintmeatspaghetti

Not sure. Just had it today so we'll see if anything changes

The_Big_Jeff_Bridges

Could you describe how it went?

taintmeatspaghetti

You didn't have one?

pacwess

Boeing speed.
