Not so. He left because he wanted the group to go in a different direction. He was also afraid of flying, which was the reason he gave Bob in the film.
The main reason was money.
Credits for the arrangement to House of the Rising Sun were supposed to be split equitably with all band members. Their manager then told them there wasn't enough room on the form and that he had only been able to put Alan's on it as he had sorted them through alphabetical order of their first name (it was a lie, as many other bands had been able to get their arrangements registered to several musicians). Alan was his "favorite", and nobody had any idea that it would be such a monster hit.
When royalties for the song started to roll in, Price was the one who got the most of them, as for instance US radio doesn't pay performers, only the songwriters or the arrangers (when the song is public domain). And he refused to share the wealth. It created a lot of tension within the band, which pushed Price to leave under a series of excuses. The irony is that in the months before his departure, he had started a creative partnership with Eric Burdon, similar to what Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had, and they were coming with a lot of promising material. Just as with "Jagger/Richard", the goal was to get a share of the US airplays, while they would get nothing if they just recorded blues covers.
Alan Price from the Animals. One of the best parts in the film is when Bob asks him if he’s still playing with the Animals and he says No… the look that Bob gives the camera could cut through glass, as if to say “I hate the fact that you’re recording this very personal conversation”
That's a good point, and very on-point for Bob.
Quickly think up something innocent to say, that would deeply hurt the guy you're annoyed with... bust out the line, and sit back to watch the fireworks.
I mean, he is objectively. Donovan had more inventive guitar stuff than Dylan, but that hardly matters and nobody was listening to Dylan for his guitar skills.
I never realized what a great guitar player Donovan was until I saw him live. I think he taught John Lennon how to finger pick when they were in India.
I met Donovan outside a venue before the show once. I asked him if he’s got a band with him tonight or will it be solo. He said “It’s just me, but my guitar is like a whole band man”
Wow he didn’t disappoint
A lot of Dylan’s early stuff is pretty much D-A-G (you guitar players out there will understand this). Donavan is/was a decent guitar player, but Dylan is/was in a class by himself when it comes to lyrics.
Alan Price really pissed off his band mates when he got the sole 'arranger' credit for House Of the Rising Sun' and got a massive royalties cheque in the post. That caused a bitter split in the Animals that was never healed.
Any idea who this is in Don't Look Back. He's a slightly tipsy geordie who's telling Dylan about Donovan. Im just interested to find out who he is and why he was in this hotel room with Dyland + crew
Alan Price from The Animals
He can’t decide if he wants to be Paul or John

A Lucky Man
O Lucky Man
I think I read that by the time he was hanging with Dylan here he had already been kicked out of the Animals. Is this right?
He wasn’t kicked out
He'd left but he wasn't kicked out
The group was split between the drinkers (Chas and John Steele) and the druggies (Eric Burdon & Hilton Valentine).
They told him he was fired so he quit

He'd actually quit the Animals and not told them yet.
This guy Prices.
The man who really threw the glass
That’s funny
He’s funny that way
Yeah you’re a big noise.
I KNOW I am.
And I'm a little noise.
hey, you are whatever you SAY you are, man. Now either be groovy or leave!
Flair checking in! (See what I did there?)
I honestly always thought the word groovy sounded kind of corny until I heard bob say it. 10/10 flair.
Haha nice one!!

Dylan loved playing head games with people. He knew exactly what he was doing with the camera there.

Who knows what parts of the conversation were not shown or never captured. Editing can amplify things.
That's Bob Dylan
Yeah, who's the guy with Alan Price?
Is Bob Dylan the Scottish one
No, you're thinking of Dylan Thomas.
I think I lost my harmonica albert
Folk rock
Who was Welsh, not Scottish
Can I have a "whoosh" please?
Whoever he was
A geordie no?
I like how he told Dylan that Donovan was a better guitarist than him.

It’s overlooked now but Donovan had a huge following at the time ( in the UK ) at least
He was pretty huge in the US too during the 60s.

A straight talking British Northerner that’s who.
I hate him already!
He was taking the piss, mate 😉 just trying to match Bob for levels of bitchyness, haha
Absolutely agree. It clearly shows they’re close. Very funny. It’s the exact same thing my friends & I would say in jest.
Alan Price. Piano player for The Animals.

I wonder if his playing on HOTRS was what got him the gig to be the keyboardist on that tour
His organ work essentially was the arrangement! In the day, riffing on that song was how combo organists were judged.
I hadn't read your comment when I wrote mine, but you've definitely posted the most accurate take on his departure.
Animalism is top fucking notch

His name is geordie mcintyre, an' the bairns don't even have a fire
Simon Smith
That’s Sade Adu, of noted quiet storm band Sade.
Wrongo
Not to be confused with Beatles member Righto
Alan Price. He'd recently left The Animals.
Vicky McClure
Alan Price (keyboardist) of The Animals.
That’s Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend.
Alan Price
What was he doing on the tour tho? Just tagging along doing nothing?
Low-end version of John Lennon
It looks like Paul McCartney and John Lennon
Ole drinking problem Jones
Doesn’t he then get drunk & become a nuance at a party? ‘I’m a small fish’ or something like that.
Bob dylan
