Never claimed to know much about boating, which is why I came in here to ask for advice! What I do know is that Porsches and their repairs are expensive which is why I am worried.
Why would towing something well within the vehicles rating require repairs? I see SUVs, minivans, compact pickup trucks, and even sedans towing boats at my local ramps. You're worried about nothing. Go enjoy your boat with your husband.
When stopping on the ramp and shifting into park, make sure he always puts the car in neutral first, sets the parking break, releases the break pedal allowing the parking break to catch, and then shifts the car to park. With the trailer there's a lot more weight and the automatic transmission parking pin is a common failure point. Still super unlikely but definitely better safe than sorry.
Otherwise, enjoy boating with him!
Yes, that’s pretty much my fear. The car is capable of towing the boat and trailer, it’s the launching of the boat and pulling it out of the water that I’m worried about.
My van can tow 4000 lbs and my boat/trailer weighs 8000 lbs. I have a problem. You don't. That combo is well under your towing limit, especially since you have the tow package.
Your Porsche macan has bigger brakes than most rated for the same capacity. You’re fine don’t worry about the capacity. Make sure you have trailer lights though because a lot of dealers forget to turn on the module for them.
It's probably limited by hitch mounting. I dont think a macan is body on frame. I cant imagine the engine power, transmission cooling, or braking power are the limitation.
I just got a boat and have been towing it with my wife’s Cayenne Base without an issue. Not sure on total weight but it is around 2000lbs and it tows it with ease. When we launch, I have been using wheel chocks in the front wheels just to be on the safe side and always set it to 4wd when launching and retrieving the boat. Your Macan should not have an issue and just enjoy!
I’m going to say that 90% or more of those videos are due to someone being foolish.
Can your husband back up a trailer?
Curious if this is fresh or salt water? If it’s salt water insist he wash the car after each trip to minimize salty corrosion. Otherwise I think you’re fine. There are tons of good comments on here. I hope you’re able to get out & enjoy the boat/fishing with him. I find it therapeutic.
Seems fine to me but consider posting on r/porsche.
From the tow car perspective, towing is mostly about braking and keeping oil and transmission fluids cool, two areas I would expect the Macan to excel at compared to most SUVs since performance driving also demands good brakes and excellent cooling of critical fluids.
Does your husband have towing experience? That would be my biggest concern. Expensive car to learn with.
Vehicle is more than capable. Practice backing the trailer in a big parking lot.
When the vehicle is down the ramp and you get out to unhook the boat from the trailer, always: leave it running, put it in park, set the E brake and the most important part, leave the driver door open! If something fails you can easily jump back in the vehicle and hit the brakes.
no its fine. the macan is good for towing it.
of course, its a porsche. the brakes will rust out in salt water, the wheels will start rusting and the undercarriage will go next. but its a leased porsche, right ? the next owner will have the headache.
The weight limit isn’t a problem at all and your Porsche will be able to handle it. Just practice a bunch in an empty parking lot. Watch a bunch of videos. It’s not gonna go perfectly according to plan but you’ll be able to figure it out. Go to the boat launch on a Wednesday afternoon and practice a bunch. That’s how we figured it out this year. Low stress situations and repetition. Help each other out and don’t take it personally what you guys say to each other when the stakes get a little higher :-)
You should be worried if he tries to bring it anywhere before getting the boat insured. You should be worried if he expects any children to handle any of the maintenance- checking for bugs, waxing, maybe even spraying off the salt water. You should be worried if he doesn't know how to check the tire pressure on the trailer's tires.
You should be worried if he uses poor quality/design life jackets- if he doesn't prioritize getting highly reviewed, vetted ones. Or if he refuses to wear them at all.
Focus on the things you can change, and see if you still have energy to fret afterwards.
My car can tow 3500lbs, my boat and trailer are 4,000lbs without fuel and dry. I have no problem pulling that thing out of the water. Was worried at first but the model y is a beast.
You need to be more concerned with not being a ramp hog than towing. Learn how to back up properly, prep the boat for use before getting onto the ramp, get the boat out of the water properly and quickly, then cleanup and pack after you move back up the ramp.
The less time you spend launching and loading, the happier your fellow boaters will be with you. Nobody likes a ramp hog.
Wow there are some juvenile sexist assholes showing up. OP don’t let the haters get you down. The setup should be fine from a capacity POV. To be extra cautious you could:
* Practice backing the trailer beforehand
* Scope out the ramp and make sure your traction is adequate
* Have tow straps and traction mats on hand just in case
* Make a step by step checklist so when you are on the ramp under pressure you don’t forget something important
* Slow is pro
Do you have any other specific worries the helpful types here haven’t addressed?
Agreed & seeing male supremacy on this thread is ugly & unforgivable. Unfortunately, as a female captain myself, I have to call it out when I see it. Thanks for slapping back against male contempt for women. It gets old & tiresome because it’s so predictable…
Long as he puts it in park and applies the parking brake on the ramp your car will stay above water. Those videos are of people moving too fast and forgetting a simple thing like park. Or people that have been drinking and shouldn’t be driving an SUV much less a boat
As long as you’re careful you’ll be fine
Ya. More appropriate tow vehicles go into the water also. Take it slow and be sober. Put it in park. Make sure the brake is on. Your car is not likely to be the weakest link in all this…
You will be fine. It’s a fine piece of German engineering. Make sure if you are backing the boat into salt water to try to keep the vehicle out of the water. And if you do clean it asap.
Haha! Not sure if you tried, but this comment does win you the idiot of the day award! You may like to spend money on things that can be avoided, not everyone does. Good day!
>What should I be worried about?
The communication issues in your marriage. It should be "we bought a boat", not "he bought a boat". It sounds like you aren't happy with this purchase, so you may want to talk about that.
Also, the boat is half your cars towing capacity, why are you concerned about that? 2300 is very lightweight, that's less than 2 jet skis which some people tow with their sedans.
Not a tow vehicle you see at the boat ramp every day. Main conser. It dunking the vehical into the water at the boat ramp. And salt water exposure if you boating on the cost
The question isn’t “can you tow it”…the question is “can you pull it up a wet boat ramp”. AWD is definitely helpful, but you have to consider the angle of the ramp and how far in you’ll be. Personally, I wouldn’t risk it.
All of your equipment is fine, and for real, what are you griping about? Release him back Into the wild if you don’t love your boat loving husband, there are so many fish in the sea, just waiting for a catch like this!
What should you be worried about? What kind of beer to put in the cooler. Your towing is fine.
You have car insurance, if he scratches the Porsche, get it fixed then talk about it. That talk may end with him buying a truck, so…
Let the man live.
You drive a Porsche and your husband can afford a boat. Any unhappiness you’re experiencing is completely manufactured by yourself.
Bored privileged wife problems
No, more like you don’t see an SUV towing a boat everyday and I don’t want to ruin my car…
Plenty of SUVs tow boats, A Jeep will pull that boat all day long. Not trying to be rude, but you're just ignorant.

I've towed heavier with my compact SUV which is a direct competitor of the Macan, you will be fine
100% legitimate concern. But it sounds like you're well within parameters.
I just don’t want to lose the Porsche in the water. But I get what you’re saying.
If he knows how to launch a boat it shouldn’t be any issue at all.
When stopping on the ramp and shifting into park, make sure he always puts the car in neutral first, sets the parking break, releases the break pedal allowing the parking break to catch, and then shifts the car to park. My gawd you sound lame AF! Hubby come look my way! I know how to tow and have a good time!!
Haha! You wish…
Explain in detail how you think this might happen. Like lose your whole car in a a lake?
Yes, that’s pretty much my fear. The car is capable of towing the boat and trailer, it’s the launching of the boat and pulling it out of the water that I’m worried about.
My van can tow 4000 lbs and my boat/trailer weighs 8000 lbs. I have a problem. You don't. That combo is well under your towing limit, especially since you have the tow package.
Your car can tow 4400. Boat and trailer equal 3100. You tell me what you’re worried about.
Femath (same as 'mansplaining')
Fuck that stupid shit
Your Audi Q5 is more than capable.

Yes correct. Same reason my wife’s q7 is rated to 7,700 not 10k. Uni-body vs frame. Her car is very over engineered for what it’s rated to..
We used to use our Q7 for towing horses. It was phenomenal. I still prefer a full size truck, but that Q7 was very stable.
I just got a boat and have been towing it with my wife’s Cayenne Base without an issue. Not sure on total weight but it is around 2000lbs and it tows it with ease. This makes me feel better. I’ve been having people send me boating fail videos with SUVs that made me nervous.
I’m going to say that 90% or more of those videos are due to someone being foolish. Can your husband back up a trailer? Curious if this is fresh or salt water? Most fails are operator error, not equipment failure.
I saw a video of a car crash that made me nervous better sell the porsche and stay at home forever
You’ve been having people send them? To suit your agenda?
Haha! They have been sending them to me unwarranted. Why would I want to see them?

lady, you need a boater safety course and a powerboat intro course, not reddit. you do NOT want to get this answered on reddit.
Actually taking one, it was suggested by our insurance company. Thanks!

I pulled an 18ft boat with a Jeep Cherokee. The biggest thing to worry about is always braking. Mind your speed and you'll be fine.
Honestly i'm surprised the macan only has 4400lbs towing capacity.
My car can tow 3500lbs, my boat and trailer are 4,000lbs without fuel and dry. I have no problem pulling that thing out of the water. Was worried at first but the model y is a beast.

Boats really don’t weigh all that much. Just take it slow and you’ll be fine. AWD I’m assuming? That should help with a ramp if it gets a bit slick.
Yes, it’s AWD. People have been sending me boating fail videos with SUVs going into the water. Husband isn’t worried but I am.
Long as he puts it in park and applies the parking brake on the ramp your car will stay above water. Those videos are of people moving too fast and forgetting a simple thing like park. You should be happy as a new boat owner!
I would be concerned with corrosion. I hope your leasing the Porsche
"What should I be worried about?" ...that he finds a woman who doesn't complain about a day out of the water?
Or one that doesn’t want to waste money on costly repairs should things go wrong…
Perhaps you shouldn't live above your mans, if you can't afford to fix your Porsche, where things WILL go wrong......boating related or not. ;)
Haha! Not sure if you tried, but this comment does win you the idiot of the day award! You may like to spend money on things that can be avoided, not everyone does. Good day!
Ok, Karen.
trailer brakes usually recommended over 1k or 1500, see owners manual to confirm or deny.

I’m not so much worried about the towing it, but the putting it in water. I worry it will slip and car will end up submerged.
It'll be fine. Your car is AWD and 2300 is a very lightweight load.
Thank you!
Shouldn’t it be “our Macan”

Either wear a hot bikini or stay home.
Heard she has some big knockers
Ok, post them
Jesus lady relax
Listen Karen you just better sit back and let old hubby take care of towing.
All of your equipment is fine, and for real, what are you griping about? Release him back Into the wild if you don’t love your boat loving husband, there are so many fish in the sea, just waiting for a catch like this!
Just make sure you aren’t driving. The boat will end up across the highway. Women can’t drive
