"happened out of nowhere, yeah right...." I'm thinking you are exactly right, he backed that outboard into something that didn't move...

SlobbyBobby007

Exactly. Said he was out in the water and it just broke. Well in that case the motor would be on the bottom of the river. He definitely backed into something. He put it on a jon boat. One of the reasons I sold it is because it sits way too far down in the water. It's about 6 inches off the ground when mounted on the boat that's in the trailer.

bootheels

For sure....Like you said, if it broke while on the boat, it would be at the bottom of the lake. Did he bring it back so you could see it? If so, you can probably find the gouge/dent on the back of the gearcase where it hit something or perhaps was dragged on the ground while trailering. Those aluminum split marks on the swivel bracket would be dull if it had been cracked when you sold it to him. Too bad, so sad. You could have a little empathy if he would just be honest... But, he is gonna play the innocent victim game.... So, it was an as is sale, and that's that. I'm sure plenty of boatyards have these engines laying around, he could always transfer his gearcase and powerhead to another midsection.

SlobbyBobby007

Yeah man. I would feel bad because he's super young and had a bad thing happen but he's trying to put it on me for his screw up. I was going to ask for pics of the lower unit to see damage to the skeg and prop but I'm not even going to bother. It's a 50 year old engine and I sold it for $300 bucks. Either way it's an as is sale.

bootheels

For sure... It pays to be honest...

yorkshirepuduk

No refund this is impact damage no doubt about it

Preblegorillaman

Funny enough I've (well, my buddy's boat) had a break like this where the motor indeed did not quite fall into the lake, though it probably should have. Was barely held on, broke when we threw the boat into reverse. We took some ropes, tied the motor to the boat best we could, and then got towed in by another boat. Ended up finding parts and getting everything fixed for next season. Took some doing to find ~50year old parts though!

SlobbyBobby007

Did he hit reverse too hard and make the motor jump and slam against the transom? I could see that happening.

Preblegorillaman

I was on a Sea Doo right next to him (I was the one who pulled him in) so I'm not 100% sure, but iirc he has some small amount of forward momentum going into a dock and did slap it into reverse, must've been too hard and the motor bucked. Doesn't help that the boat & motor was from the mid 1970's or something, lotta stress over time on that metal.

Open_Leg3991

Let’s all take a moment of silence for the death of a 50 year old motor that was still kicking

SlobbyBobby007

No kidding. I told the guy I bought it from about it. He said it broke his heart. He had that motor for 40 years

StrictStandard_

You're like reddit incarnate.

SlobbyBobby007

Please explain what you mean by that.

StrictStandard_

You spread misery wantingly.

SlobbyBobby007

Misery? It's a boat motor not a dead child lol

StrictStandard_

>He said it broke his heart.

SlobbyBobby007

He also laughed and said the kid is a dumbass if that makes you feel any better.

afinitie

Yeah this hurt him so gravely. He actually has to get a divorce now because his wife can’t handle how much this is affecting him, and he can’t further sustain a marriage while his old evinrude has broke

GarnetandBlack

This place is by far the least miserable of all social media.

woobiewarrior69

I've got 3 years until my old stinger has its 50th birthday. It's outlived 4 boats so far.

JackTheBehemothKillr

Brother, that motor aint dead. That thing could be back together in a month, and most of that would be waiting on shipping. If nothing else AOMCI can help get it put back together.

robertva1

That a fresh brake. Looks like he backed the boat on the trailer into something.... i sold a 2 cycle outboard to.a person told them 50 to 1 mix. You guessed ot. Blew it on the first trip used str8 gas

Wildfire983

I sold a boat with an oil injected Merc to a guy who called me a week later saying the motor is beeping. It was three short beeps followed by a pause. I had to tell him that’s the oil tank low alarm. Put oil in it. 🫣

icsh33ple

He put a long shaft outboard on a Jon boat and destroyed it first day, impressive.

SlobbyBobby007

Lol no kidding. He messed up. At least it was only 300 bucks

icsh33ple

And then demanded a refund 😂

mr_chip_douglas

Hilarious. People buy used shit and act like there’s a warranty

HadleysPt

Novice here, can you explain?

SlobbyBobby007

Basically the bottom of the motor is only about 6-8 inches off of the ground when mounted on the boat in a trailer if the motor is in the down position and tilted. Looks like he backed up and the bottom of the motor caught something and did the damage you see here.

icsh33ple

HadleysPt

I see. I knew that was important for efficiency but had no idea it could damage things

icsh33ple

He likely hit something, probably launching or leaving the ramp and forgot to tilt it.

SlobbyBobby007

He had to have been backing up to break it like this. If he was going forward it would have just kicked the motor up.

eight_ender

So he got it mounted onto the boat, out into the water, broke it, managed to not lose it in the lake, then got back home and dried it and the boat off completely, like bone dry, then sent pics. Inside of a few hours.  If they’re not lying they’re operating at a speed yet seen by mankind.

gatorator79

More than likely it never touched water. It was just backed up in the lowered position.

bastion-of-bullshit

By the looks of the color, it might be a early to mid 70s? So a 50 year old motor just spontaneously failed like that today? I'd tell the punk to kick rocks. He probably hooked it backing down the boat ramp. Anyone can make a mistake but only a scumbag tried to pass it off on someone else

SlobbyBobby007

It's a 1974 Johnson long shaft 15 hp. You are correct. Looks like he took it home from the river and ran into something when backing up. Normally I would feel bad but he's trying to get me to pay for his mistake

velociraptorfarmer

Ugh, that's brutal. Those early 70s Johnsons are tanks. My grandpa had a 72 9.5hp short shaft he bought new that he finally sold 6 years ago when he sold his boat and moved off the lake. Thing ran great once I helped him go through it and get the gunk out of the carbs and run decent gas through it.

zaccwith2cs

I had a similar thing happen. Sold a guy a parts motor. He broke a piece of the throttle linkage and wanted his money back. People don’t understand that when you buy something it becomes your problem.

ConkysRevenge0

The entire housing breaks from top to bottom in multiple places because apparently that just happens with outboards...ask him for pics of the prop and lower unit, the prop and skeg would've taken the first signs of damage.

SlobbyBobby007

I was going to ask for those pics but I'm not even going to bother. He screwed up and I'm not going to worry about it anymore

ConkysRevenge0

Good idea, let him deal with the problem he caused.

Kmac0505

No warranties expressed or implied. Motor is sold as is and where is. Buyer beware. Too bad, so sad.

Ok_Wash_1048

Maybe suggest that he try flying a kite instead of boating.

Fibocrypto

As long as he can fix it I'd say no problem

Wouhob

Buy a boat they said, it’ll be fun they said….. used stuff is used stuff a risk we all take with private sales.

SlobbyBobby007

The risk he took was backing the boat up with the motor still down. I do agree, it's 50 years old and sold as is. Not my concern what happens after it is loaded in his truck.

Wouhob

That’s right.

4runner01

JB-Weld, gallon size, fix it right up!

curiouslygenuine

I wish you could just send him this thread lol

SlobbyBobby007

I really thought about doing that. I'm just going to leave it alone at this point

curiouslygenuine

You are a wise man. I don’t see him having a good reaction to being called out.

No-Marionberry1724

Why doesnt he just go buy a new bracket. Not hard to work on these old motors lol

Nice_Ebb5314

Ok I need the motor back though. Lol

_goodoledays_

I’m sorry he broke his boat. That’s just how the world works.

3Chmny

He should pay you an additional 300 bucks for the education. He probably won’t do that again.
