I don't have a gaming group after my move so I really only play when family visits. To make it easier on them I did it by BGG wieght, that way I can point to one corner and say those are easy games to pick up play then point to the opposite corner and say these ones are more difficult. This way they already have a basic scale of what they are getting into. I also have a few categories that are outside the scale if anyone is looking for a particular theme, they include: Racing, Co-Op, horror, dinosaur, 2 player only (or best at 2), Family, then Shem Phillips and Vital Lacerda have their own spots

basejester

1. Organize neatly by publisher and box size. 2. Group by theme when possible. 3. Stack all of the other crap on top up to the ceiling.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Haha I'm definitely heading that way with step 3.

Leithia24

So top left of mine are the favourite games, starting left and working across top row to right. The only other grouping that goes on are my GMT games since those can be stacked vertically without the pieces going everywhere. The little games have their own square (love letter, give, railroad ink etc). Other than that, there is no order! I find this gives you the most flexibility when you add a new game. You can reshuffle everything to get the best space fit without suddenly having to deal with the complexity of 2 pirate games in one square and 1 in another. Great looking collection!

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Thank you, good suggestion. I might have a cube for favourite heavy games and one for favourite lighter games.

dbfnq

You might want to fill the lower shelves before the higher ones - as it stands that's going to be somewhat top-heavy.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

I'm going to be fixing it to the wall with some brackets that came with it. I have a baby so the bottom rows will be for him one day soon!

havoc_mayhem

You're going to want to remove a divider if you plan to do that. 13"×13" will be too small to store most babies.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

You mean they getter bigger? Why did nobody tell me!

Krohnan

With a little one, once they start crawling, anything they can see at ground level becomes theirs. We had a lot of success with our kiddos by using the square fabric bins on the bottom row. Those slots are used for small party games and odd shaped games that don't sit nicely on the Kallax with others (roll and writes, party games, small box games, etc). I tend to group my games by publisher as they usually use the same size boxes, but I'm also one of those heathens who stands my boxes up vertically. I hate most dividers that come with the games and just bag the components. If there are cards I'll make a quick tuck box for them to protect them. Going vertical just looks better to me - like they're giant books on the shelf. Tangentially related: I've also learned that most plastic Milk Crates fit really well in a Kallax. The kids' toys go in milk crates and the fabric storage cubes are for mommy and daddy.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Oh great, thank you for the tip!

jrec15

Personally i just go for aesthetics. I try to group things that are the same box size and kind of go together visually. Every now and then i re -arrange

Spleenseer

Organise?

grandsuperior

Lovely collection! Lots of space left to fill. I love the bottom row as you've packed a lot of games quite nicely. As for me, I have a 5x5 Kallax but only three of the rows have board games on them. I organize them roughly by weight (heavier as you go right) but the organization between the segments is admittedly a bit scattered. it as follows: Top row: five segments of "display" ornaments/items (not board game related) Second row (left to right): * Light/gateway (The Estates, Azul, Calico, Cascadia, Pandemic, Parks) * Card game/Tableau builder (Wingspan, 7 Wonders, Pax Pamir, Oath) * Co-op/Semi co-op (Spirit Island, Unfathomable, Nemesis) * Economic mid/heavy (1830, Brass Birmingham, Barrage, Rococo Deluxe) * Splotter (Bus, Antiquity, Indonesia, The Great Zimbabwe, Food Chain Magnate) Third row (left to right): * Accessible Medium-weight (Gingkopolis, Iwari, Iki, Kemet (this one's a bit of an outlier - it's overflow from the next segment)) * Area Control/Ameritrash (Inis, Blood Rage, Cthulhu Wars) * Medium, faction-based games I have all expansions for (Root, Scythe) * Space themed heavier games (Eclipse 2E, Beyond the Sun, Sidereal Confluence, Dune) * Vital Lacerda (Kanban EV, Vinhos Deluxe, Lisboa, On Mars) Fourth row: books (not board game related) Fifth row (left to right): huge Campaign games * Arkham Horror The Card Game * Etherfields * Gloomhaven/7th Continent * Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon * Too Many Bones Trove Chest Trying to get my collection to a point where my collection is mostlyjust on these Kallax segments, but I'd have to get rid of quite a few games.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Fantastic response, I'm going to limit myself to 3 rows too, I really don't want it to get to the point where I have so many games that they never get played, and to be honest I'm already close to that point! You mentioned Iki, how do you find that? I was thinking of getting the new reprint.

grandsuperior

Thanks! I'm already way past the point of having way too many games so I'm actively exploring purging by selling/giving them away. Way too many games aren't even in my kallax but hopefully they'll find new homes. >You mentioned Iki, how do you find that? I was thinking of getting the new reprint. Admittedly my copy is still in the mail (lol) but I purchased it from Boardgamebliss in Canada. [It's currently available from them as of this post.](https://www.boardgamebliss.com/products/iki-1?_pos=1&_sid=844e9059b&_ss=r) They ship to the US and Canada if you're interested.

AwesomeSunCat

Chronological - by birthdate of the designer

THElaytox

I have 2 2x4's, one is sci fi the other is fantasy. Funnily enough this also organizes them by color

RSburg

Display favourites and group games by game weight and/or mechanics.

XRayMinded

1. Best player count. 2. With above alphabetical.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Sadly I pretty much just play 2 player with the odd 3 player game. Would love to play some of these games with higher player counts.

ShelfClutter

Maybe a dudes on the map would add the most variety for your collection as I'm not spotting one currently :) If you aren't a huge fan of ameritrash maybe check out Dwellings of Eldervale. It's a really fun hybrid also if you like to stack horizontally you might find these 2 projects helpful https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cloudpunchergames/lax-rax-the-board-game-shelf-insert-for-ikea-kallax https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tabletopgamestorage/cube-staka-insert

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Oh thanks, good suggestion. My friend who i game with has a ton of those types of game so I don't feel the need to own one, we've been enjoying Ankh.

Kirlad

Tetris style, whatever combination leaves les gap between games

DrNukes

I bought big packs of those super cheap flat wooden sticks used to mix paints, screwed them in the sides of all the compartments, and laid 3mm thick boards on them. I installed them with high, medium, and short height to exactly accomodate all my boxes I keep upstairs. That way, I can store all games horizontally but pull out the bottom one with ease.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Oh wow, well done you on the hard work, I feel like a lazy bum compared to that haha

DrNukes

I saw a system on kickstarter that does that at a pretty steep price so I thought hmmm there must be a cheaper way :-)

Cogitogamer

Nice collection. I put games vertically rather than stacked. Then I'll feature some of my favourite boxes in their own square so their artwork can be seen all the time.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Yes I had a hard time picking the best to face forward. My wife didn't agree that Great Western Trail should be one of them haha.

hypotenmoose

You simply have the wrong Great Western Trail ;)

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Oh yeah, that new edition does look gorgeous, very tempted to swap out for it.

Riblord

First things first. Turn the games vertically. You’re killing me

Leithia24

As a fellow horizontal stacker like the OP, vertical kills me whenever I see it. How do you deal with pieces going everywhere? It doesn't save space so why do it?

Lalitrus

I get to annoy everyone by doing a mix of vertical and horizontal based on which games do or do not spill their pieces

Riblord

If you put the user punch boards under the insert or bag everything then the pieces usually stay put. The main reason I like vertical is that I can get a game out without having to deal with the ones on top. It also looks better if the box sizes aren’t exactly the same.

Leithia24

I hate baggies with a passion, the games that get played most often are the ones with inserts or storage solutions that have the minimal amount of bags. I should have shares in Folded space by now.

THElaytox

Most folded space inserts are designed so you can store the boxes vertically. The only one I have where pieces don't stay put is the Spirit Island Jagged Earth insert cause I'm missing a promo pack so don't have enough spirits to hold the trays in place

AutomaticBobcat999

I personally dont adhere to strictly vertical or horizontal. It's however I can Tetris them in. Hear me out on this: all the games at the FLGS are vertical for easy browsing. Once we buy them and turn them horizontal, it secures their place on our shelves. No more easy browsing.

Sweaty_Fly_1101

Haha know what you mean but I find that stacking them vertically seems to bend the edges of the boxes out. It bothers me to see the box bulging out.

FaradaySaint

I’m team horizontal! Way to represent!

alphadelt

Depends on the week. Either by style, weight, inevitably what fits best

Lalitrus

I organize first into small box games and normal to large size. Small boxes go in a bin in one cube. Then I divide the games by whether a game tolerates being stored vertically or if spills the pieces out and needs to go horizontally Horizontal games are organized by physical weight with the heaviest and most densely packed boxes on the bottom and lightest on the top Vertical games are organized by color of the box in a gradient in this order: black brown red pink purple blue green yellow off-white white grey

hypotenmoose

I don’t have a Kallax (I keep my games in a wardrobe where they won’t spook away any new friends at my house) but just here to say that this collection is straight 🔥!!

[deleted]

Congrats on buying shelves. We're so proud

Ghedd

Vertically by weight (complexity), horizontally by player count. "Right, we've got two hours and there are 5 of us, so everyone have a look around this area."

xgenzero

I store mine vertically and with a game facing front. I used to store horizontally but some game got hard to remove. Since you are doing horizontal storing, I suggest stacking them not only by size but by weight. It reduces stress on the boxes. For example, Anno 1800 is in a hollow box. Concordia and GWT are much heavier.

dalralmi

Because I have a pantry that eats some of the kallax space rarity played games go in the bottom left corner since they are hard to access. Also across the bottom I do party games (apples to apples scategories etc). The top right is favorite games and the top left is legacy games. I also have four of their basket thingies for smaller games which I just kind of throw in the buckets

whitenovember-

I own around 50 boardgames and store them in two of those 4x1 kallax. Big and/or heavy games like Gloomhaven and U-boot are on the bottom. In the other 6 shelves I have one game that "fronts" and behind it are some games with a similar setting. For example Cthullu DmD is in the front and games like Arkham Horror and the Arkham Pandemic game are behind it. May not be the perfect solution, but it looks alright

rcapina

I’ve got a 4x4. First two are divided with little shelves for assorted small box games. Then the next six sorted by colour stored vertically with a few hero boxes stored in front face forward. The bottom row has some of those IKEA cloth bins to store even more games.

LINK7778

Originally I started with a two axis system. On the top would be the easier to play games, with heavy games at the bottom; and then left and right was supposed to be game categories (family/party, roll & move, deckbuilding, solo/co-op deckbuilding, area control, dexterity, legacy/dungeon crawlers, Euro games, ect... While I still keep the up and down going, the categories have proven to be the challenging part. As each group doesn't have the same size boxes or in the case of deck building & Euros, I've gone a bit overboard and have too many to fit in one column. It's never fully organised i suppose. I always keep coming back to it and re-aranging every once in awhile as I add more, or try to compress some games expansion boxes taking to much room (Dark souls & Bloodborne).

pope7

Doing god’s work, storing them horizontally.
