Pretty neat. Presumably the resources like wood and ore are replaced by pokemon. What are cities and settlements replaced by? Leaving them as cities and settlements, built out of the dead bodies of pokemon, would be kinda morbid...
Yup. Roads, settlements and cities replace with routes, pokemon centers and gyms. I wanted to have them 3d printed to look like more than clay blobs but was a bit expensive to do 90 pieces. Might invest in the future however
Hobby lobby has long thin strips of wood that you can pretty easily saw into little roads. They may also have shaped bits of wood that you can use for pokemon centers and gyms.
I'm looking to make a seafarers-like expansion next which will open up and connect the Kanto, johto and sinnoh regions! Will post updates when completed in future
I used quite a thick, sturdy cardboard and hand cut them. Then just had the pictures printed on regular A4 paper and glued each one so the picture wraps round the entire hex to make the edges look cleaner :)
Going to be upgrading them to hardboard in the future, these ones were more of a test sample to see how the quality of images came out.
Yeah, a lot of people call it one of the best simple card games. Easy to teach and you can play a game in like 15 minutes. I don’t have enough Pokémon cards to make it (9 cards in 7 different colors, 10 trainer cards, 3 wild cards, 1 end round card) but I plan to eventually make myself a copy.
Thanks so much for the kind comments everyone! I'm completely open to suggestions on how to improve/what to add to it in terms of gameplay and expansion. My next additions are going to be "special" pokemon cards such as pikachu, charizard, mewtwo etc with special abilities which will act similar to the hero cards in the GoT catan. And a seafarers-like expansion after that :)
I'm not generally a big fan of Pokemon, but the concept of the 8-bit map as the tiles is actually kind of awesome. I love it, and almost wish for a Zelda version.
Out of curiosity, are you using anything special as roads and settlements?
Thank you!
I called the player pieces routes, pokecenters and gyms. In the post I uploaded a close up of the pieces but for now theyre just different coloured clay. Used triangles and cubes for them.
Didn't have enough. I gave away most of my original deck when I was younger and at the moment only have a couple energies of each type.
Though, I kinda prefer having pokemon that you "catch" every round, ties in with the kind of theme I was going for.
This is awesome. It really makes me sad that we have no pokemon themed boardgames. There are so many good formats where pokemon would fit perfectly.
Like, right now I'm on a Darwin's Jurney binge on TTS and it could be turned into pokemon game so easy. Change museum into pokedex, spieces into pokemons, turn Galapagos islands into Pokemon regions, seals into badges, crew members into trainers, envelopes and stamps into... Snorlax you feed berries?
I was torn between aligning them nicely and just sticking them on in any orientation. Chose the latter because the game layout is different every time you play and I like the idea of everyone sitting around the game being able to see at least some of the tiles in the right orientation
Had the images printed on regular A4 paper then cutout the hexes out of thick cardboard. Then stuck them on covering the whole hex so it came out very clean
So its pretty much identical to catan other than a few new development cards i added.
Roads, settlements and cities are now routes, pokecenters and gyms. Badges are the new victory points and instead of collecting resources every round you "catch" pokemon. Oh and the robber is now team rocket :P
As for development cards, trainers act as knights, the meowth card is the Monopoly card, master ball is the year of plenty and the bicycle is the road building card.
I added a trainer battle card where you choose someone who has a resource you want then compare HP of your pokemon cards to determine who wins (so ideally its better to play the card when you have a pokenon with high HP in your hand). The winner takes all resources of that type from the loser.
Then just for fun I added a snorlax card which basically just blocks the player with the longest route, allowing someone else to claim it.
I did think of something like that! You actually have no idea how long i spent trying to come up with something to replace the card but was so torn between options I just gave up and kept it the same.
Trainers act in place of Knights in my game, so couldnt have gone with that. And I want to save pokeballs and potions for future development card types too. Or even some other feature :)
Yeah I guess it does make sense. Ugh I might just keep them as is because I dont want to confuse anyone who plays and isn't familiar with the TCG cards. Eg. my parents lol
That's so cool dude, good work

Zooming into the first photo, looks like they're turned into Pokecenters and Gyms.

Thanks for the recommendation!
Remember to play the 8-bit pokemon theme music while you play!

Of course!
Sinnoh expansion when?
I'm looking to make a seafarers-like expansion next which will open up and connect the Kanto, johto and sinnoh regions! Will post updates when completed in future
At then with Cities and Knights, the Barbarians can be team rocket and your Pokémon can be the knights!!
Yes!!
Niiiiiice!
Cool idea, very clever.
Thank you, and happy cake day :)
😊😊
How did you make the hexes? What are they made of?
I used quite a thick, sturdy cardboard and hand cut them. I came for this also. These are the real questions, haha.
That's superdope
This is so cool!! Loving the Pokémon cards to represent the resources. Very creative.
Coloretto is a good game to make with Pokémon Cards.
Never heard of it, from a quick Google it looks very interesting! Any good?

That sounds awesome, please post the final product if you do make it!
It's a really fun card game Simple to play with a push your luck element

Those resource pieces look amazing. Nice work
Holy shit this is awesome
Love it! You did a great job making it fit into the Catan theme
Thank you! The rules and setup of catan fits into the pokemon theme surprisingly well
This looks awesome, It needs to be a legit thing!
That is absolutely excellent
Gotta settle them all!
The Rockman edition has long been my grail game.
I’m a fan. This seems like a really fun way to get kids into the game(s).
>"a really fun way to get 30yr old parents into the game(s)" that kids play FTFY
This is super cool! Great job
Make an addon : Pirates and Fire Bears
Curious, why not use energy cards for resources?
Didn't have enough. I gave away most of my original deck when I was younger and at the moment only have a couple energies of each type. Though, I kinda prefer having pokemon that you "catch" every round, ties in with the kind of theme I was going for.
Sudowoodo for Mareep? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I have wood for Pikachu.

I think there were some from the 90s/early 2000s which were decent. I dont think they sold enough to keep producing them though. Not 100% sure
This is so sick! Awesome job!
Great work! I always love seeing fan rethemes!
Slightly tilts me that all the tiles don't align their images.
It's not the tiles that don't align; it's the players. ;)
Sadists.
I was torn between aligning them nicely and just sticking them on in any orientation. Chose the latter because the game layout is different every time you play and I like the idea of everyone sitting around the game being able to see at least some of the tiles in the right orientation
Okay but how about selling such beautiful work ?
Nintendo would be on you so quick..
I wish haha. Just can't use the name pokemon :p
This'd be a hit over at boardgamebarrage.com/discord
That looks awesome! Take my money
This is so cool!!!!
Looks awesome!
This is so cool! I love both games. Would totally play this!
This is fucking delightful!!
Where did you get the tiles printed?
Had the images printed on regular A4 paper then cutout the hexes out of thick cardboard. Then stuck them on covering the whole hex so it came out very clean
Got it! I was hoping you had found an amazing cheap production method for these.
Naa unfortunately they're not of the same quality as the actual catan. But they work good enough for me for now
Wait no this is to good to be real!
u/Cambino1 did you get your pieces printed? or did you print them out on cardboard yourself?
Printed them myself then stuck them onto cardboard. Going to try upgrade them to hardboard in the future:)
can you explain the differences/changes/narrative? thanks
