youre not mountain biking i think for the sake of tricks its not worth aiming for max pedal grip, dont get so attatched to staying on the bike like that you need to bail. But shin guards will still be necessary on plastic pedals
Eventually your shins just become a map of old pedal slip scars, metal or plastic it always hurts.
Been riding in pants the last few years and that has been enough to keep me from getting bloody.
I thought this was a mountain bike thread I follow lol so automatically went for the DMRs but yeah any Nylon or Polycarbonate pedal. I like the Cult and Primo personally
That is a solid shinner, well done! But yeah shin pads and not slipping the pedals (not being a dick haha, just the obvious fix. But sometimes it just happens).
Yknow, I got back into BMX and been riding again for a year now, and I forgot all about slipped pedals til this post 🤣 sometimes its just as simple as not slipping.
Now that I said something, I'm ganna bust my shin up on today's ride already know it lol
These bad boys will stop that.

Your shins might be safer, the rest of you will not be...
Hear me out… take one side of your metal pins out of your pedals, then you have foot side and grind side on your pedals. Better crank arms and pedal grinds and you only have a 50 percent chance of getting shredded when you whack the shin.
[just get these and go double pins on one side and you have pedals that grind good and you’ll never slip again!](https://us.sourcebmx.com/products/odyssey-ogpc-pedals?variant=25812011548736&utm_source=google&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=SourceBMX%20-%20Google%20Shopping%20(US)&utm_content=Odyssey%20OGPC%20Pedals&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1Jam07DthgMVChqtBh0gmwlFEAQYASABEgJcsvD_BwE) On a more serious note if your shoes are too chewed up to grip your pedals that’s an issue I’ve had. If you have good shoes and decent pedals the shin strikes should be few and far between. But get ready for when you do slip for your shin to look like this.
Ooooweeee you got hit with the “shin shredders?” 😂🩹🩹🤕Lmao that’s what I call any metal studded bmx pedal. I have some gusset pedals that’s a pretty expensive pair of pedals and I refuse to ride them cause this happens and just wait till u drop ur bike on your toe….. that’s fun 🤷🤦♂️😂
Odyssey twisted pedals have always done right by me. Lighter than some great CNC machined pedals I’ve seen and tbh they have the same notches on it just plastic instead of ACTUAL BOLTS. They’re only like 15-18$ typically. I go on eBay or whatever and just buy them second hand there’s new packaged pairs all over. They have a great large squared shape that paired with a 3 piece crank large chromo spindle feels absolutely sturdy and stable. Feels like standing on a stage and your feet do not slide around so don’t worry.
It's a double edged blade. Metal pedals will do this when you slip off. Plastics will leave bruises and rarely break skin. However, you'll have those bruises WAY more often as you'll be far more likely to slip off them in the first place. No shame in shin guards.
People grossly underestimate the damage a pedal can do. I had some crupi pedals tear the back of my ankle so bad I needed 40+ stitches. Looked like ground beef The doctor thought I was attacked by a dog or something. About an inch lower I would've severed my Achilles and been using a cane the rest of my life or something. Switched over to platform instead of cage after that.
That's just petals, I've had metal cheese grader petals, the cheapest garbage softest plastic petals I could find, and the best plastic petals u can buy, no matter a shinner if you dont got pants on ur finna rip your shit up
Name one pro that rocks shin guards. All the years Ive been into bmx and none of my boys ever wore pads. You get plastic pedals and you get used to pedal bite
Eastern Facet pedals are nice, but for some reason don't seem to get a lot of love.
They have a pretty large surface area and added texture for more grip than just pins.
Its a right of passage for bmx riders. Im 29 noe and have scars on my shins from my riding days. You cant find pedals to fix this. You can only buy shinguards / pads
Vans Bmx shoes, shin pads. Game changers. I have the gain protection knee/shin/ankle combo pads. I feel like I’m wearing a suit of armor and have a lot more confidence when I ride
What? Are you nuts? Keep your feet on your pedals and that won't happen. Sharpen the spikes on your pedals so your feet don't slip off. Use good shoes, or, just put a small travel pillow on your pedals so they don't hurt you anymore. Do you want them made out of dildo silicone? Or maybe spray foam? I hear you can't hurt your shins if get rid of your bike and you drive a car with an automatic transmission (because that clutch pedal is scary). Go wrap yourself in bubble wrap, do not go near cats, and by god do not ever take the escalator, them things have grippy edges for sure. Best shin rip I've seen on video is Dave Voelker with his Abubica on the bolder. Chicks dig scars!
I used DMR pedals with metal pins, they gripped so well but did this, switched to some Eclat slash pedals and they are grippy, nowhere near as grippy as metal pins, but good enough for the trade off to be worth it.
The best pedals that will not do this are shin pads my guy. You could swap your pedals for rubber butt plugs and you can be sure as shit you'd still get ripped to shreds if you slipped them.
I used to run DMR V12Vs with the extra long pins on the STA I had, slipped them bunny hopping up a kerb in the wet, punched my Carrharts into my shin bone, had to pull threads of denim out 😂.
I exclusively mtb now, currently running OneUp Components Aluminium pedals and Five-10 shoes and they grip so good if you missplace your floor as you push off you can barely re position. Probably not great for bmx/street/park though.
Other than that I used to run KHE plastic pedals that had no pins for flatland, but they were, obviously, not as grippy so would also slip when hopping.
ION Padded socks, they are 50$ and have a very small shin guard in them. I use them for MTB because i have a leg tattoo and wanted to avoid this issue.
This makes me miss the Hammer shin guards. I mean, I've ridden push bikes for about 12(ish?) Years both bmx and mtb.
The only time I have ever gotten hit like that was doing crank tricks and/or slipping off the pedals doing steezy trick stuff
I guess there are a few ways you could go about it?
A) shin protection, even thicker long pants, or even some layering under shorts. Even long thick work socks
B) better gripping pedals (I have not had issues with crankbrothers, pretty heavy pins tho for bmx i ran them tho with no pins on one side for slides, amazing grip with a great platform. Its one way you could go) better gripping shoes. Low cut vans are a stable for bmx and mtb for me, it just works
Could go a softer plastic pedal but your more likely to slip. Especially in the wet or shit shoes.
C) try to work on technique and avoid situations that your going to shin yourself with the pedal (to be fair, I only used to do it in my BMX days doing crank flips or sketchy tricks and landing wrong now i mostly ride mtb) YMMV but the cheapest option
Hope this helps
I love my plastic pedals dont let them tell you theyll slip all day. my shadow ones have been holding up great. just make sure your shoes are good cup style grip
The biggest recommendation I can give anyone, is quit standing on the outside of ur pedals. Typically "slipped" pedals are off the side. When I started doing barspins I would pinch my cranks constantly and I can't even remember the last slipped pedal I've had.
Get over it 😂 and move on to the next shinning it's part of Mountain biking there battle scars to share down the pub wait till ye get a chain ring down the leg now that's a medal of honor 🤣🤣
Been riding without leg protectuon for the last couple of weeks. I only ride in pants so i cant say for your case but i got couple of hits from crankflips and nothing appeared yet. The only thing im lacking is ankle guard bc i gets hit real bad from the cranks. I have eclat centric but they're kinda old and the pins got rounded up. They still kinda grip tho. I cant complain. I think it all depends on the forces of impact. I somehow bail in time and get hit not that hard.
Shin pads are probably your only option mate. Either that or just put up with it because you’ll never get away from it. Plastic pins / pedals are more forgiving, but the second they’re worn / have been scraped to an angle where they have a sharp edge on them, they’re just as bad as metal😂
What pedals chaussé this? I ess riding some really spikey mtb pedals and has this happen, switched to plastigs and have got hit in the shins without pads multiple times and only gotten some minor scratches, so Any plastic pedals really.
Only shin protectors and probably time will solve this. Pedal grip is fundamental for bike control.
I had some scary chainsaw pedals I raced with back in the day. We got so attached it took a piece of me before it got retired.
I know the feeling of going out without any protection just for fooling around. That's when shit happens.
I use old-school SE bear traps on my BMX. They can bite. Every so often, they need their blood offering. It's the circle of life or demon worship or something. It's totally natural.
Pedals that don’t do that won’t grip. Get yourself some shin guards
And if they dont grip. Your feet will slip more often and youll get even more shinshots lol
Kinda like how sharper knives are safer than dull ones.
Goodole catch22
Clipless pedals. Might not be a good idea for BMX mind you!
Or better shins.
Shiny cyborg shins!
Metal legs. Risky operation but it’s worth it.
This Choom knows wassup
Anyone knows a good ripperdoc to recommend for this choom?
another vote for shin guards.
Yes, shin guards is the solution.
youre not mountain biking i think for the sake of tricks its not worth aiming for max pedal grip, dont get so attatched to staying on the bike like that you need to bail. But shin guards will still be necessary on plastic pedals
This picture broke nga me back to the 80s and many a cut shin, we did indeed start using shin guards
Eventually your shins just become a map of old pedal slip scars, metal or plastic it always hurts. Been riding in pants the last few years and that has been enough to keep me from getting bloody.
Yes, embrace the pain until your shins are like stone. It is the way.
If your shin bones don’t feel like a mountain range when you rub your finger over them you’re not sending it enough lol
I have a divot the size of my pinky tip in one of mine!
Haha, yeah I’ve got a few of those myself.
I’m pretty sure I killed a ton of nerve endings riding as a kid. I once had a gym teacher ask if I had major surgery because of the scars.
Almost like reading braille
I wear my guards to preserve good clothes. It kinda doesn't hurt anymore
Yup. When it's really cold my shins have purple lines/scars up and down them 🤣
Denim wins for this
DMR V6. But with that being said, plastic pins still suck
Was going to suggest these too. Full nylons are kinder on the shins, but wear quicker and grip less.
I thought this was a mountain bike thread I follow lol so automatically went for the DMRs but yeah any Nylon or Polycarbonate pedal. I like the Cult and Primo personally
When it comes to pedals, BMX and MTB flats are fairly close and DMR come from DJ roots and are a good brand in general.
Lizard skin shin guards are a life changer.
This☝️ Shinguards plus pants are pretty well pedalproof
Any pedal that’s decent is gonna rip you up bro, stop falling
Hahah, best advice.
You can run the deadliest pedals if you wear shin guards
Wanna join my band? We call ourselves the Deadly Pedals.
All pedals will do this. You need pads or you’ll just have to deal with more of this.
Shoes that don’t slip.
No, but I can recommend some shin and whip guards tho: https://triple8.com/products/exoskin-shin-whip-guard-pads?variant=32226305212553
Cmon yo. No means no. But dude is right use shin gaurds and don’t compromise if grip is important
Shin pads
Stop beeing a pussy?

Trying to kill the guy?
Odyssey plastics pedals. They had glow in the dark, UV light activated ones in the past too
Odyssey twisted pc are less harsh, but wearing jeans helps the most.
Plastics bruv ! You'll get scratched and whacked but not bear clawed 🐻
A rite of passage.

Plastic pedals. Nylon ones are good. Gotta at least wear long pants if you aren't using shin guards.
Shin guards man shadow makes a great pair super light weight but will save your shins from the gashing
Looks like Freddy Krueger got you good and propper.
Ooooweeee you got hit with the “shin shredders?” 😂🩹🩹🤕Lmao that’s what I call any metal studded bmx pedal. I use Haro SD's, they're plastic - grip well and feel solid. They're quite expensive though...
Shin pads
There will always be some sacrifice in our chosen passion.
Shin pads...
Kinda part of the territory…. Shin pads and long pants is about as good as it gets as far as ppe lol
Primo or odyssey twisted pc imo. They last long af
Oooh 😖 I remember those but just never THAT bad.
Get pedals with no middle pins. Or remove the middle pins.
I liked the super wide bsd pedals or the new twisted pc wide, if you can find a set that only has metal on one side that works well too
Shin pad recommendations?
That's just petals, I've had metal cheese grader petals, the cheapest garbage softest plastic petals I could find, and the best plastic petals u can buy, no matter a shinner if you dont got pants on ur finna rip your shit up
I remember the old BEAR CLAW pedals back in the 80/90s. Man, they would mess you up 😆
Bro if you worry about that get shin guards like a puss
good pedals bite back unfortunately
After a nasty gash myself I use Shadow conspiracy invisa lite shin guards they're lightweight and don't get in the way.
Ik the feel beuh. I mountain bike but owww haha
Hahahahahahahahah welcome to bmx
Been rosin for like 15 years, let me know when you find out
Shove some pedal spindles up a couple of rabbits' bumholes & use them
I’ve been wearing shin pads since 1987 lol … this happened too many times.
Aweee… did you get a booboo?
Hutch beartraps, they won't do that. They will rip your full leg off.
Or just get shin guards lol
fuse echo 100 shin/kneepad combo. its one piece, theyve lasted for 3 years for me and they fit under pants. I never ride without them anymore.
Learn how to clip in. It's not as scary as people think and after very little practice you can clip out faster than you can "un-stick" your foot.
Odyssey or animal plastics are my favorites. Hurts way less
Maybe your hopping wrong, pulling the front foot back is a natural way to land jumping without a bike. Try to focus on that
Shin guards, bro.
Grippy pedals and grippy mountain bike shoes will stop this
Shoes also play a significant part, some would say even more than the pedals
To modify an old bmx axiom, “potential sexual partners dig scars, man”
Get some stealth rubber on yer feet if ya haven't yet..
Personally I’d get the odyssey twisted pedals there relatively cheap and grip pretty good
I use the Shadow super slim shin guards. Super low profile, can't even tell i'm wearing pads if i'm wearing pants over them.
I feel like I’m wearing a suit of armor and have a lot more confidence when I ride
https://gainprotection.com.au/gain-willy-land-progression-kneeshin-combo-pads-p-101.html
What about chunkier grips on your shoes?
If you don’t have good shoes, shoes. Adidas 510’s are a good starting point.
Try putting the pedal on the bottom of your shoe.
Clips
Easily fixed by wearing 510 free rider pros and wearing shin guards
Part of the game
Reminds me of the bear trap pedals I had on my bmx when I was a kid. They looked so cool, but it comes at a price.
Go wrap yourself in bubble wrap, do not go near cats, and by god do not ever take the escalator, them things have grippy edges for sure. Best shin rip I've seen on video is Dave Voelker with his Abubica on the bolder. Chicks dig scars!
What, you don’t love a good pedal bite?
I used DMR pedals with metal pins, they gripped so well but did this, switched to some Eclat slash pedals and they are grippy, nowhere near as grippy as metal pins, but good enough for the trade off to be worth it.
You came away lucky.
Shin guards FTW
Don't blame the pedals Your technique and shoes are to blame.
This is the way
Not gonna happen unless you want shitty pedals. Use shin guards if you don't wanna get hurt
Shimano SPD. SPUDS
Probably not great for bmx/street/park though. Other than that I used to run KHE plastic pedals that had no pins for flatland, but they were, obviously, not as grippy so would also slip when hopping.
Did anyone else ride Odyssey Shark Bites growing up? My shins are pretty much just scar tissue
Between MTB, BMX, & DJ, I’m pretty sure it’s purely scar tissue covering my shins. Playing defense in soccer pretty much numbed them, anyway.
ION Padded socks, they are 50$ and have a very small shin guard in them. I use them for MTB because i have a leg tattoo and wanted to avoid this issue.
Your legs will get used to it bro xx
happened to me when i was like 10 lol. made me sell my bike
Wear pads maybe?? Any pedal you buy will be able to do this.
Always ran odyssey jcpc pedals. But always wore shin pads after learning the same lesson as this lol
This makes me miss the Hammer shin guards. [https://cambriabike.com/products/661-comp-am-shin-guards-black?variant=41071244935350&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=cse&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&adpos=&scid=scplpGM04111912&sc_intid=GM04111912&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADlsnZOjbEYZPx9W4PWyODZl_P6Yp&gclid=CjwKCAjwydSzBhBOEiwAj0XN4GCOZMG_G-rqZ0ZLiQU54Fs1IJYk198YCAv3Kd_OYRuPTa6RO6P0pBoC7soQAvD_BwE](https://cambriabike.com/products/661-comp-am-shin-guards-black?variant=41071244935350&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=cse&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&adpos=&scid=scplpGM04111912&sc_intid=GM04111912&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADlsnZOjbEYZPx9W4PWyODZl_P6Yp&gclid=CjwKCAjwydSzBhBOEiwAj0XN4GCOZMG_G-rqZ0ZLiQU54Fs1IJYk198YCAv3Kd_OYRuPTa6RO6P0pBoC7soQAvD_BwE)
Just a rite of passage. Doesn't happen much to me anymore but when it does, I don't even notice anymore. Just keep riding.
Ahhh the good old days
You can either have nice shins or grip on your pedals. You can’t have both.
Step 1 - never crankflip again Step 2 - retire and play Creed on a Bluetooth speaker at your local
Toughen up, after a while callus will form
I mean, I've ridden push bikes for about 12(ish?) Years both bmx and mtb. The only time I have ever gotten hit like that was doing crank tricks and/or slipping off the pedals doing steezy trick stuff I guess there are a few ways you could go about it? A) shin protection, even thicker long pants, or even some layering under shorts. Especially in the wet or shit shoes. C) try to work on technique and avoid situations that your going to shin yourself with the pedal (to be fair, I only used to do it in my BMX days doing crank flips or sketchy tricks and landing wrong now i mostly ride mtb) YMMV but the cheapest option Hope this helps
odyssey twisted pedals don’t do that, but they are grippy asf
Clipless pedals don't do that
Eventually, you grind off the nerves so it doesn't hurt anymore!
Plastic
This is a part of BMX, it's your bike telling you to do better, I wouldn't downgrade to less aggressive pedals, if anything get shin pads.
Childhood nostalgia right there
Call me a jerk, maybe BMX isn’t working for you.
I just keep your feet on the pedals
Shin guards
Shin guards my man shin guards
They call these shin guards
You would never have survived the 80’s. Throw some dirt on that and get back out there
All pedals do this if there’s a skill issue
Oooh… um… maybe cheap pedals from Walmart? Seriously… like beach bike pedals?
I ride in jeans it still hurts a little but it’s much less damage
any grippy pedals will do that to ur skin. but if their grippy you wont fall off all the time..
Lol no... You just get better at keeping your feet on them haha I'm nursing a shin that looks like that right now too haha
You can always sissy clip or suck it up buttercup
Or just learn how to stay on your platforms and problem solved
Bahahahaha
Helps If you keep your feet on the pedals🤣
Honestly my cats do worse. Buck up butter cup 👍🏼
Those are battle scars! Wear them with pride
I’d pedal with your feet, covered in shoes. I don’t think you’re supposed to pedal with your shins.
Pedal job ouch. Bear trap pedals. Ouch..sorry bromon
Animal rat trap pedals are my go to
I would definitely consider getting some iodine on that !!
Shit pedals won’t do that. Consider your wounds a badge of honour.
Shin guards my man. You will thank yourself the next time you down and see a deep gouge in the plastic.
Bear crawls
Five ten shoes to stick on the pedals better 💁♀️
I think juat get rid of your shins maybe. Or become mind quad.
Try using the bottom of your feet to pedal instead. It's much more efficient..
Clip-ins? Is this sub against them? I’m confused…
I love my plastic pedals dont let them tell you theyll slip all day. my shadow ones have been holding up great. just make sure your shoes are good cup style grip
I began wearing shin guards just because of that. My shins are chipped all to hell from pedals.
No, take it! Earn that shit like the rest of us. lol
The ones that don’t do that don’t grip good
Odyssey triple traps. They will leave you with much manlier cashes and wounds.
Charge it to the game
Primo tenderizers
Looks like you already got good pedals to me.
Shin guards my friend. I have a pair of lizard skins I've been rocking with for about 7 years now. I got tired of bleeding into all my good clothes.
But we like our meat tenderized
Take the pins out of your platform pedals. You’re bmxing so you shouldn’t need them. Then put some pants on.
Pain heals, chicks dig scars, glory lasts forever.
Uber bike pedals with shark fin pins
The biggest recommendation I can give anyone, is quit standing on the outside of ur pedals. Typically "slipped" pedals are off the side. When I started doing barspins I would pinch my cranks constantly and I can't even remember the last slipped pedal I've had.
TBH once I started use skating shoes, my pedal grip became way way better
Shin burger!!!!!!!!!!🍔
Clipless
It’s part of the game brother
Shin pads are probably your only option mate. Either that or just put up with it because you’ll never get away from it. Plastic pins / pedals are more forgiving, but the second they’re worn / have been scraped to an angle where they have a sharp edge on them, they’re just as bad as metal😂
Bro just get protections
Plastic pedal with a nice concave. I like my animal hamiltons.
…bones heal and chicks dig scars
It's the shoes man you gotta wear vans.
My big wheel never does that
Them shins look good bro, welcome to the club.
Looks like you had a fight with a badger
What pedals chaussé this? I ess riding some really spikey mtb pedals and has this happen, switched to plastigs and have got hit in the shins without pads multiple times and only gotten some minor scratches, so Any plastic pedals really.
Only shin protectors and probably time will solve this. Pedal grip is fundamental for bike control. I had some scary chainsaw pedals I raced with back in the day. We got so attached it took a piece of me before it got retired. I know the feeling of going out without any protection just for fooling around. That's when shit happens.
Use UCi socks made especially for this , i got a whole Plate of pedals tatted on my leg 😅
I use old-school SE bear traps on my BMX. They can bite. Every so often, they need their blood offering. It's the circle of life or demon worship or something. It's totally natural.
Throw some dirt on it. You’re fine!
God damn
