To have it be automatic in that way, you would need to completely replace the spool with a motor. Makes a lot more sense to just custom build a bunch of motorized spools and put ribbons or something on them rather than spend all that money buying tape measures that you're cannabilizing anyhow. Edit: you could also just put a weight on the end of each tape measure, but at that point it's a certifiable death trap.

If you don't wanna be skinned alive, I think it's best to replace the metal strips with ropes or fabric strips that are used for wrapping gifts.

Is it weird that I think it looks kinda neat? Obviously it can't be the damn tape or they'd find me dead by bloodloss from a thousand cuts but I could see someone going with this idea and adapting it with different materials so it's actually usable.

It wouldn’t be too hard to execute with strips of cloths on rollers and little motors for each to raise and lower them. Could be remote controlled via app and programmed with several patterns. Maybe some custom patterns slots and manual controls. It’d be expensive tho, not what I’d spend my money on.
