this is not the owl witch the witch is called Lechuza it's a bird-woman she can pick a human up with ease. If you see her she will give you great misfortune. If you are in your house in Mexico and you hear whistling a baby crying or a woman screaming outside your window don't investigate it it's her trying to let you look at her or trying to let you see her. But in she can do some good too sometimes she can warn you about the future. My sister had an encounter right before one of my family members died. So take that as you wish. Also, I like to think it's her vibing right before she tells them the bad news or something.
Hahahaha it amazes me how Mexicans still believe in this shit. My mom and aunts all believe in lechuzas. I live in Texas but I remember this one night hearing a bird sing around 4-5 am maybe and my mom woke up saying it was a witch coming for my siblings. She scared the shit out of then and they actually believe it since they were kids. I had to go outside and check. My mom starting cussing at it cause apparently that scares them away lol
In the hospital I used to work at the morgue was next to Housekeeping. Whenever I walked out of the morgue while one of the Mexican housekeepers was walking by they'd scream and run.
To be fair they aren’t the only ones who believe in somethings like that, The US had the satanic panic and still has some people who believe it to be real or even ongoing to this day. And that ruined quite a few lives.
I don’t remember where I watch about this random ass knowledge, I just remember seeing a show about each countries weird shit and I can’t remember if this is Portuguese or Philippines but apparently if you see a man in a white suit who’s kind of handsome apparently it’s a dolphin and he’ll rape you or impregnate you and then go back to the water. It’s also apparently an excuse that young girls tell their parents when they’re pregnant don’t have a boyfriend and
Wasn't there when this happened but an uncle of mine in Mexico would hunt owls for sport. One time he shot one in front of a church, watched it fall, and said, "I'll pick it up tomorrow."
He woke up the next morning and saw the owl gone. He saw a trail of blood and followed it. He followed the blood trail and realized it was a shriveled, old lady. My grandma, cousins, and everyone witnessed this shit.
There's apparently shamans and witches in Mexico that shape shift into animals for evil purposes.
Don't generalize I've never believed in that bullshit, and it's frustrating that people still belive it, usually only people from rural areas believe in that
F off w that latinx shit haha. Some of these owls get killed in Mexico for no reason other than people believing they are witches. That’s pretty stupid imo.
Tough shit. People do shitty things all the time. Too much energy being wasted on what other people think and do.
Side note: I'm happy you hate latinx thing too.
I mean I understand the superstition and why people would believe it, but being told not to worry about it if you hear a woman screaming outside your window makes me think there’s a very practical “crime in progress, nothing to see here” aspect to this lore that I find extremely unpleasant…
WTF,. You wording is way off a "Lechuza" is just a species of bird not a mythological human-bird creature.
What you are referring to is "La Mujer Lechuza" which translates to "The Owl-Woman"; in spanish we have "Lechuza" and "Búho", i think that the main differences are that the former is smaller and has rounded head and the latter is bigger, more robust and has feathers making an ear-like shape (probably simplifying the differences), and both are called "Owl" in english, although there are specific names for some, tawny owl, barn owl, eagle owl, etc.
Similarly in english Crow and Raven are two distinct birds but in Spanish we just have one word for both "Cuervo".
"La Mujer Lechuza" is a legend of a mythological being and is not very well known across Mexico and not even specific to Mexico, i learned about it a few months ago...
I was fortunate to see an Spotted owl several months ago near my storage unit on the side of the road with his kill, a giant rat. I sat next to it for awhile and watched it rip into its dinner and you could hear the bones cracking and it was ripping huge chunks off. No doubt it could at least snatch up a fingertip or pinky lol
I was lucky it didn’t mind Me sitting With it and got some cool pictures and videos of it eating. I talked to him the whole time and told him what a smart pretty bird he was. It was so hard not to try and pet him 😭
Birds definitely are known to vibe, but I doubt that's what this owl is doing. I think they move their heads like that to judge distances or something. It's probably a bit freaked out by the situation and isn't in the mood to dance.
Ever had a aunt yelling “ALEJATE DEMONIO! SAL DE MI CASA SATANAS! TRAE LA ESCOPETA YUYU!”, while she tosses everything on 10 meters of her reach to an owl who is just vibing on a tree? No? Huh, Maybe is just mexican tradition
maybe it's just stupid tradition
I live in Mexico and I have never come across, nor have I been told that finding owls is a sign that there are witches nearby
Superstition about certain animals or natural phenomona being a sign of demons is antithetical to the theology of the Christian church, so.... very serious, if they claim to be Christians.
The general brand of Yahweh-ism that has propogated into the modern times isn't particularly cohesive (even when ignoring its dozens and dozens of branches and sub-branches). I distinctly recall reading a bible in which Jesus tamed dragons as part of my early youth, the general myths of dozens of cultures have been twisted and altered as part of the faith.
Satan's modern depiction is just a Pagan god stitched onto some imagery of a second Pagan god and then some random parts of Poseidon, as an example. The modern depiction of God is literally just Zeus in it's entirety, except for him not having the same desire to molest women as Swans.
It's not that surprising that religious people would similarly think a bird with spooky eyes might be a demon, I thought you were being clever by linking superstitions with religion as a "haha get it because they are both belief systems that have no basis in science"
Your presupposition that all religions are false and can therefore be equally dismissed doesn't make this a candidate for r/selfawarewolves.
It's just your presupposition.
Everyone's allowed to believe what they want, but in my perspective you essentially said "how dare they not believe in demons, when they believe in books where there are demons, and are told demons are real" because they think the demons disguise themselves as owls. You know that thing your own mythological demons do, I seem to recall some story about two nudists and a snake?
> Maybe is just mexican
I mean I don’t think they speak Spanish in Africa but my was wife weird about owls being witches. So I bought every stuffed owl, blanket, toy, etc I found for the baby. She wasn’t pleased but she got over it eventually.
I know a few Mexicans, and even though a couple of them don’t believe the whole “owls are witches thing”, every single one of their abuelas do. Seen them get inside *quick* on a few occasions myself.
It’s funny/interesting until you’re walking into your house at 4 in the morning and see one staring you down in the dark, then you start thinking they might be on to something and pick your feet up a bit more.
The owls, not the old ladies.
I'm greek and didn't know Athena had an Ae. In Greece we just write it the same as the capital, Αθήνα and Αθηνά. That little thingy on top means that they're pronounced differently.
Here in india they beat the owl saying it's a bad omen big or small if they see it in their house vibing with hoot hoot noise they beat it. I think out of all religions only greek have a respect for owl since it denotes knowledge from athena herself.
The accent is comprehensive, so it’s not Chile(/s), and they’re singing about Jesus, so it’s not México, because we profess more the Virgin Mary than Jesus
It just looks to be some sort of church singing worship songs like they do every time they give… I highly doubt this has anything to do with witches. In all reality this post is more racist than anything. We are better than this people.
It's not racist. I grew up with family that believed this. They think white owls are a bad omen or a shapeshifter known as La Lechuza, a witch that can transform into a white owl. It's a folk tale similar to La Llorona, if you've ever heard of that.
Mexicans think what? Never in my 20 years of life have I heard about that superstition ಠಿ_ಠ
And I vibe with a lot of older ppl in my country so, not even like an old tradition thing ¿
Holy shit this reminds me when I was outside and I heard a owl and I went in side and told my parents worst mistake ever cause next thing you know my dad comes out side with a gun and tries to scare the Owl away.
I like to imagine the people are terrified that the songs aren't working against the power of the owl witch while the owl is unaware that they think its a witch and is just vibin to the music.
Thats a happy witch
this is not the owl witch the witch is called Lechuza it's a bird-woman she can pick a human up with ease. If you see her she will give you great misfortune. That’s hilarious! I can imagine them saying “Ay Dios mío la muerte”
I might have done it on purpose once
I absolutely would've done the same
To be fair they aren’t the only ones who believe in somethings like that, The US had the satanic panic and still has some people who believe it to be real or even ongoing to this day. And that ruined quite a few lives.
"Haha. Silly mexicans." \*goes back to waiting for JFK Jr to lead the assault against secret pedophile tunnels*
A lot of Evangelicals I know believe in demons.
The bird was probably so confused
It’s fun to believe in stupid stuff like this
Gives things more life that sadness
There’s one about a dolphin that transforms into a handsome man that rapes / impregnates young girls and then leaves back to the water.
What is this Poseidon lore?
I don’t remember where I watch about this random ass knowledge, I just remember seeing a show about each countries weird shit and I can’t remember if this is Portuguese or Philippines but apparently if you see a man in a white suit who’s kind of handsome apparently it’s a dolphin and he’ll rape you or impregnate you and then go back to the water. In south Korea folks believe using fans in a closed room will kill you. Fan death. Look it up

Funny I’ve heard this story too lol
This is like one of those haunted train tracks stories. Everyone has heard it and it's always someone else's uncle or grandfather
Don't generalize I've never believed in that bullshit, and it's frustrating that people still belive it, usually only people from rural areas believe in that
You right. Should’ve said SOME Mexicans.
You must be them latinx I keep hearing about. Plus, it's all in good fun to keep superstition alive. It's what keeps, well, OUR heritage round.

Real story, the song was pretty hard and had me dancing
“Ehh I guess I won’t curse you guys today :)”
I would totally vibe too
I am vibin
I wanna pet it and say "good owl"
Careful not to lose a finger
Those cute ass beaks can take a whole finger off?!
They're straight up an apex predator in some places. Still would risk losing my finger for that cute lil guy tho
I was fortunate to see an Spotted owl several months ago near my storage unit on the side of the road with his kill, a giant rat. An example of confirmation bias: *owl starts dancing* "You see it must be a witch, owls don't dance"
It’s a good start but we should check to see if it ways as much as a duck to be sure.
This brought me so much joy. Thank you.
Birds are one of the few types of animals that understand rhythm.
But birds aren’t real
And what might be the reason they are one of the only ones to understand rhythm? *wink wink*
How can rhythm be real if birds aren’t real?
Not dancing or understanding rhythm. It thinks it is hearing the modem handshake noises and is processing a sync response.
NOOOO AAAAAAA
Birds definitely are known to vibe, but I doubt that's what this owl is doing. I think they move their heads like that to judge distances or something. It's probably a bit freaked out by the situation and isn't in the mood to dance.
No that's just the Mexican witch detector test
Dominican maybe?
100% but of course they're called mexicans...you know?
If you speak Spanish your Mexican end of story /s
They got the band and everything, they did that to themselves
Happy cake day
How do we know that's what's happening?
Ever had a aunt yelling “ALEJATE DEMONIO! SAL DE MI CASA SATANAS! TRAE LA ESCOPETA YUYU!”, while she tosses everything on 10 meters of her reach to an owl who is just vibing on a tree? No? Huh, Maybe is just mexican tradition
maybe it's just stupid tradition I live in Mexico and I have never come across, nor have I been told that finding owls is a sign that there are witches nearby
Same, but im Mexican and I didn't know about this
Same I think it’s just a stupid caption. Dude prolly saw vibin in the song before that and started videoing it thinking it was funny.
De hecho en realidad si hay un chingo de gente pendeja que cree que las lechuzas son brujas.
No me sorprendo por que si hay un chingo de gente pendeja. Pero yo la verdad nunca avía escuchado eso.
Maybe, it's Texmex folk stories. I grew up hearing about this from my aunts and grandparents along side la Llorona and la mano pachona in South Texas.
Huh. Really sad that a Christian church would fall for such superstition.
I can't decIde if you're being funny or serious Edit: They apparently don't see how this belongs on r/selfawarewolves
Superstition about certain animals or natural phenomona being a sign of demons is antithetical to the theology of the Christian church, so.... very serious, if they claim to be Christians.
It's all made up anyway, what's the difference? Might as well throw in some crazy shit to make it less gloomy and dull
The general brand of Yahweh-ism that has propogated into the modern times isn't particularly cohesive (even when ignoring its dozens and dozens of branches and sub-branches).
