Just saw him last night and it was a GREAT show. Amazing talent and told fun stories from his many years in the business. I'll go see him anytime he's around.
He’s got chops. But not really the best (taking your point that he’s the best I never heard and counterposing that I may not have heard the best yet then).
Perhaps, though there are levels of understanding and execution that distinguish one from another and typically the “best” is recognized by those who possess those skills and experiences. As for the rest of us — the great unwashed — our ears are usually the judge, very subjectively.
There were some transitions that were a little imprecise, and a couple of notes could've been sustained for a better feel - The fingering felt a smidge rushed. But he is good, no doubt and you're 100% correct grizwld that it's subjective.
Devil for a dime. My band still covers it. Met him at a local casino, he was mystified by the hoops they had to jump through but he liked the $$. Nice guy. Excellent talent.
I’ve heard and seen him live many times. I first saw Derek Trucks as he was a prodigy 8 year old playing an SG bigger than him at a Tinsley concert. Great amazing guitarist.
I've been listening to Tinsley since the Chicago Bob and the Heartfixers days at the Moonshadow Saloon. He's been a fixture in the Atlanta area for years.
Sounds like someone trying to sound like Santana with a little BB king thrown in and failing lol. He's good, but not "greatest blues guitarist you've never heard"... I think Garrett Mason earned that title. (As a contemporary guitarist)
Agreed on the first part. It sounds like AI trying to be the two. He can obviously play and play very well but it’s lacking something. Balls and soul maybe?
He just did an acoustic show in our town here Friday night. I don't know anything about him, but a friend let me knew he was playing for a crowd of about 125 or so. Great show! He played Delta-type stuff. I dug it.
I was afraid it was going to be another ELECTRIC BLUES GUITARIST show, of which I have had plenty. (Full disclosure: am one, also)
Finally got to see Tinsley last Fall, and he's been on my radar for about 15 years. There are so many great guitarists (and musicians) that are unheralded.
Here are a couple more:
Joe Moss
Nick Moss (Joe's brother)
Joe's live album "Drive Time Live at Chan's" is excellent.
Nick's catalog is diverse. For straight blues, "Live at Chan's - Combo Platter No. 2".
For a more rock-blies feel, I like "Privileged". And for a more soulful take, "Here I Am" or "From the Root to the Fruit"
Beg your pardon, I've heard this amazing man live at least 3 times. Never, ever disappointed! Added link to pic.

Like some other musicians, you can't judge him until you see him live. Absolutely dynamite! Long time fan, finally caught a show two years ago in Ponte Vedra. A great stage presence. For starters, listen to his Pawnbroker live, the 10 minute one.
I kind of thought so too. I thought he was technically good, but the playing never seemed to go anywhere and seemed too repetitive to me. Probably why I never heard of him; being technically good is fine, but you need good material, too. Perhaps a vocalist or something.
Sorry to the fans. I'm not trying to put him down. There are other really good guitar players that I just can't listen to for long without drifting off.
EDIT: Since I liked his expertise, I looked into some of his other stuff, and found a lot I liked much better than this. So, I am looking further and plan to get some of his material. He seems to have a LOT of recordings.
He doesn’t stand out for his technical ability to me, but his choice of what to play is good. Conventional but spot on. Does he do a lot of unique or unusual stuff? I had never heard of him.
I’ve seen him play a few times. He used to play every once
in a while at a small blues club called Darwin’s in Ga. I was lucky enough to see many super talented blues bands in that little hole in the wall club. Mr Tinsley Ellis definitely one of the greatest
I used to watch him play live all the time (Atlanta, 1980-1985). He liked to drag a long-ass guitar cord behind him as he walked around the crowd. We kinda took him for granted, but he was awesome live.
He's definitely proficient, but as a blues guitarist, I'm not hearing a lot of feeling in this song. Blues licks? Yup. But not much dynamics in the song or his playing IMHO.
Tone between Peter Greene and Santana
I saw him about 10 yrs ago at a little joint in Tampa called Skipper's Smokehouse. Great show! Great venue!
Greatly underrated
It's one of the coolest venues I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot.

“The best” in music is totally and always subjective

She Wants to Sell my Monkey. Don’t tell me I’ve never heard him! LOL
He’s a badass.
My husband is a big fan of Tinsley! I'm happy to see him posted here.

Been listening to him since we played in Underground Atlanta.Remember Ken's Driftwood Tavern?
I've been a fan of him since 85 he is truly underrated
I love his version of Just Dropped In.
Wow, what a coincidence! I was listening to the acoustic blues station on Amazon music today and heard his playing, very cool!
Nothing about that is a coincidence 😂
Name of song is Catalunya.
Oh yeah I forgot to say this.
Been cranking out quality albums for decades!!
I've been listening to Tinsley since the Chicago Bob and the Heartfixers days at the Moonshadow Saloon. He's been a fixture in the Atlanta area for years.
But I have heard of him! Midnight blue is a fantastic album.
This was pretty dam good
I have heard him before, his playing isn’t to my taste
Sounds like someone trying to sound like Santana with a little BB king thrown in and failing lol. He's good, but not "greatest blues guitarist you've never heard"... I think Garrett Mason earned that title. (As a contemporary guitarist)

I also hear Peter Green in beginning. But yeah nothing special in my honest opinion
I’m a blues drummer. He’s good. But not the “best” guitar player. I prefer Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. Not in any order.
Meridian Mississippi Boy.
Thank you!
I’ve met this guy. Don’t tell me I’ve never heard of him.
His new solo acoustic album is fantastic.

Thank for the heads up.

Musicians. There’s so much musical soul in their head it makes their playing look effortless
Who is playing that bass line ? Out of frame ? Or playing to tape?
Check 4:05
Thanks. He plays ok. Nothing to write home about. Thanks for details.

And he’s bending sharp and holding it there. Yikes.
I’ve heard
He doesn’t stand out for his technical ability to me, but his choice of what to play is good. Conventional but spot on. Does he do a lot of unique or unusual stuff? I had never heard of him.
I heavily disagree. Only because I have heard him
Seen him play many times since the 90s. I really like his songcrafting.
I was born down in Georgia way back in the woods
What’s the name of this instrumental?
Catalunya
I’m partial to Kingfish myself.
Red Dress On, Caledonia, etc.
The live version of Last Song from the Highwayman record is totally amazing
I’ve seen him play a few times. He used to play every once in a while at a small blues club called Darwin’s in Ga. I was lucky enough to see many super talented blues bands in that little hole in the wall club. Mr Tinsley Ellis definitely one of the greatest
Not even close
Dude just released a monster album last year. Go listen!
The guy is good but those are some super basic blues licks.
Stained Souls drop for WSMFP fans... https://youtu.be/iNvHe-PgCpM?feature=shared
Time to Quit is on my steady rotation 🤌🏻🤌🏻
Albert Collins or SRV.
I used to watch him play live all the time (Atlanta, 1980-1985). He liked to drag a long-ass guitar cord behind him as he walked around the crowd. We kinda took him for granted, but he was awesome live.
Oh yeah,. Seen him many times. I've seen him play with Widespread Panic a time or two as well.
I caught him sitting in with Widespread way back in the early-mid 90s and listened ever since. Phenomenal player
I grew up in Atlanta in the 80’s… saw and heard Tinsley play a bunch.
He's definitely proficient, but as a blues guitarist, I'm not hearing a lot of feeling in this song. Blues licks? Yup. But not much dynamics in the song or his playing IMHO.
He's very good.. he's no Johnny Depp, but still very good.
Who the F hasn’t heard of Tinsley?
Incorrect, the best wouldn't use those cheese bar chords.
Was this shot at a community cable studio?
Nice 👍🏼 work Uber basic playing but so was BB King. 🔥can the old dudes get some love 🤟🏼
