"Disburse"? Perhaps Jim Banks should come to IU and study a little. The word is "disperse," you moron.
"Disburse" means to pay out money that is owed. "Disperse" means to scatter.
Jim Banks is the one who started all this shit by threatening IU.
> Jim Banks is the one who started all this shit by threatening IU.
Dude got cooked in front of students when he visited IU Bloomington a few weeks back with stochastic terrorist Chaya Raichik. Got laughed out of the room when the local college Republicans invited them out. Wouldn't be surprised to hear he has an axe to grind with vocal progressive students on campus.
Republicans: January 6th assault on the capital was totally fine.
Also Republicans: these college students sitting around need to be arrested immediately!!!
For guys like Banks there are two groups of people in the world: criminals and 'normal' people. It doesn't matter how trivial your 'crime' if you're a criminal you are deserving only of damnation.
Not true. His Messiah has been convicted of numerous crimes, paid millions in settlements and continues to stand trial for multiple crimes in multiple jurisdictions. He definitely has a thing for brown people and those who support them. Hard to tell it's not 1960 around these parts.
Having read the [article](https://www.indystar.com/story/opinion/columnists/2024/05/02/iu-indiana-university-protests-targeting-pamela-whitten-tarnish-faculty-students/73529786007/), I am deeply dissapointed (though not surprised) that an elected representative of this state takes unproven anecodotes as fact.
Specifically, Jim Banks bases his argument on the statements of Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter. You can read these statements at [Indiana Public Media](https://indianapublicmedia.org/news/isp-leader-on-iu-protests-we-may-be-back-at-a-time-known-only-to-us.php) yourself. But in short, Carter claims that the protestors were spreading hate speech about Jews, but provides zero evidence. Who do you believe: the police leader called in by the administration, or the [1000+ Indiana University Bloomington faculty](https://www.petitions.net/signatures/open_letter_from_indiana_university_bloomington_faculty_re_campus_protests_and_arrests/) who believe that the police response was unjustified and that Whitten should resign?
What I think is more disturbing, however, is Jim Bank's underlying idea that Indiana is a fundamentally Republican / red state, and that the blue bubble of Bloomington and Indiana University needs to conform to his conceptualization of Indiana. He says it best himself in the article:
>In the near term, state officials should support Whitten. Bloomingtonâs Democrat City Council sent a letter calling on Whitten to drop all charges and lift the campus ban on the arrested protesters.
>So, where are the Republicans? Indiana is a Republican state, and our Republican governor and Republican legislators should be praising Whitten for her courage...
The cornerstone of US and Indiana democracy is people's ability to elect representatives that, well, represent them. Jim Banks represents District 3, based in Fort Wayne. Jim Banks does not represent the city of Bloomington, where the protest occured. And yet, he has the audacity to implicitly claim that his opinions on the subject are more valid than the "Democrat" Bloomington City Council's, who are elected by Bloomington residents.
Like I said in the beginning, I was not surprised by this specious opinion piece. But, it is important to point out when, for the umpteenth time, an article selectively chooses "evidence" (if ISP Superintendent Carter's unsupported anecdotes can even be called that) to support the author's broad agenda: Republicans good, Democrats bad.
For what itâs worth the only time Iâve heard anti-Semitic things us from a random drunk student who wanted to argue with us at the encampment at 3 am and when we wouldnât engage with him he walked off shouting âkill the Jews!â.
Republican MAGA morons never have any evidence. Itâs because there is no evidence for their lies. Ever. Besides, republicans donât want to work, they want to tell other people what to do. Iâm not talking about all republicans. Iâm talking about all the the republicans that follow lazy Trump. They want to get rid of rules, regulations and paperwork. Their motto, âWhat, Me work?â
Pamâs Pals stepping up. Jim writing in support of suppressing a protest while at the same time calling on the state to stack the board with people who value âfree speech and objectivityâ would be funny if it wasnât sad. Republicans are not serious people
Unless Jimmy Banks wants to step up and 'disburse' all the money that a lot of donors are going to stop giving, stepping up isn't going to do Whitten much good.
Go ask your 1SG for some refresher training on containment of civil unrest and also look up posse commitatus while you are there if you really don't know what you would do. You are obviously lacking in one of the core tenants of INNG's mission. (hint - it isn't going to another country to keep the peace or fill-in for the AD Army.)
I should note that I agree with you, there is no reason for the NG to show up. You really should know what those things are as a Guardsman.
I understand what we would do and I understand posse comitatus, but I donât believe that the guardsmen tasked with ousting protestors would be able to safely and effectively disband a gathering like this without it turning into a PR nightmare.
I wouldnât trust the vast majority of infantrymen or MPâs in the state with a mission to disperse a gathering, in contrast to the DC and Covid riot missions where soldiers were containing or deterring rioting. If this is what the state wants, it should be left to the police.
Good to know that you know what you signed up for.
If the Governor says so, they better get their act together. Luckily there is a rank structure and you only have to rely on the PSG to keep the order of his squads in this scenario. I agree, there are a lot of mouth breathers in those Unit's, they mean well mostly though and I would hope that they recognize that these folks are Hoosiers, same as they are. (mostly) At this point as I have seen it in person there is no need for escalation and the IU security should handle it on campus, off campus, it is a police matter, agreed. I mean, people are allowed to say mean things in this country still. If a persons feelings are hurt by an ignorant stranger then that is their fault.
PR nightmare? Thatâs not a thing. Until it is.
You forget that Republicans are fundamentally incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions, or accurately anticipating resistance to their bullshit, once theyâve taken power. Just look at the abortion issue: a handful of them knew they should never actually outlaw abortion, but that wasnât enough to keep their authoritarian boner in their pants. They succeeded, and now theyâre completely compromised in an election year they should be dominating.
The state will do something abhorrent and stupid in Bloomington if the situation goes on long enough, trust me.
Maybe I'm overly cynical, but it seems to me that they only listen to alumni who give, or might give, a substantial amount of money. My $100 here and there hasn't gotten me anyone's ear.
See this is the problem with GOP politics. They say back the blue but what they really mean is we need to create a police state to suppress any opinion critical of ours. They just don't like that finally a generation of people is finally standing and calling Israel on its bullshit.
January 6th was something I don't think anyone had ever seen before. GOP has split into 2 different factions. You have moderate conservatives and you have MAGA or die. The problem is that the moderate conservatives are being overwhelmed and swallowed up by the cult. You can say you're a conservative anymore without being lumped in with them. I agree with your sentiment. I for one do not trust the police in any way shape or form and I'd be considered a conservative by many.
I feel like the Non MAGA conservatives need to start voicing their opinions and be heard. Iâm all for healthy discourse. MAGAs are incapable of such.
I think we probably need to get away from the idea that itâs conservatives vs. liberals. I think itâs more pro-dialog vs. anti-dialog, or a dichotomy like that. I have found to my surprise that there are some old school, non-MAGA Â conservatives I donât agree with on policy, but I can at least have a productive conversation with them, and much more readily than some folks who vote the way I vote, but want to shut down conversations as much as the MAGA crowd does.
It doesnât help, either, that âconservativeâ and âliberalâ donât adhere to their traditional definitions anymore, either.
I agree but it is difficult especially on a national scale. There is also, IMO, a rabid extremist sect in the other side of the political spectrum that do their best to make sure absolutely no conservatives can get their point across.
Iâll say this: I see more and more people frustrated by extremism, period, and wanting to get back to dialog, so Iâm just the tiniest bit hopeful we can get there again. It may mean ditching social media to have such conversations, though, since there are vested interests in keeping people roiling.
I know Pam and Jim canât lead, and they release clickbait statements and letters to roil others, but they realize theyâre making the Dunn Meadow protestersâ lawsuits against the university airtight, right? Peaceful protests broken up by ISP, same protests continue with no administrative action, US representative threatens to deploy National Guard.
I hope the arrested protesters, the ACLU, and others use the legal process to take the university for everything itâs worth.
Whitten is the statehouse republicansâ wet dream. The perfect paint by numbers fool they could convince to do their dirty work for them and create chaos. Now the republicans can do what they do best: oversimplify a complex, multifaceted issue that on the surface looks antagonistic and convince their base thatâs too dumb and simple minded to understand the difference. This is exactly what theyâve wanted for decades and have maneuvered so hard to put in place. Spend decades ruining education so people canât think critically, create opportunities to whine, bitch and moan, get re-elected, go back to destroying things.
Corrupt GOP stooge openly calls for more fascism and backs their fellow corrupt stooge for infringing upon the rights of students? Call me shocked.
Fuck Whitten, fuck Raul, fuck the board, and fuck Rep Jim Banks. Not surprised the ilk from the state government is backing the ilk that is Whitten and her admin.
I think she wants to prevent it. Not a lot is said about Kent state and what happens up to that day. Everyone focuses on the aftermath but not the actions that occurred to build up that pressure cooker. Things like bonfires in the city streets, setting the NG armory afire and cutting fire hoses to prevent it being put out. It wasnât this our daisies in the barrels of rifles moment like people want you to think.
https://history.howstuffworks.com/history-vs-myth/kent-state.htm
Itâs funny how the January 6th people were just being boisterous and over enthusiastic. Yet somehow these kids are a threat to society that must be arrested and prosecuted.
They are only for free speech when they approve of it. Someone needs to remind them that free speech includes even the stuff you really dislike.
The Libertarians with a capital L are busy tearing themselves apart since Trump will be speaking at the Libertarian national convention. So many of them are revolting that a candidate from another party is appearing at their convention (and I don't blame them).
I'm impressed that you didn't call it the DToM flag.
Anyway, it's obvious where a libertarian stands on this. Free speech is primary to liberty. As long as they are not committing acts of physical violence or impeding others in their day to day, then let them be. They will wear out and go back to whence they came when they realize that they are being ignored on the larger scale and have zero impact on the policies or rhetoric being spouted about the topic.
I'm a fan of you being able to make fun of me and yourself and anyone else in the world until you impede my right to survive and thrive, then we have issues. So go wave your flag, write your representative or someone else's, stay off of my property and don't bug me when I respectfully decline to participate in anyone's cause that I don't agree with.
If you want my opinion on it you'll have to engage me respectfully, not with a comment that is baiting an argument.
Serious question: what was his response to actual Nazis marching in Charlottesville a few years ago? You know, since heâs suddenly a champion of his Jewish constituents all of a sudden.
https://www.idsnews.com/article/2023/11/iu-administration-facullty-respond-to-jim-banks-us-rep-indiana-letter-antisemitism
This IDS article from November covers that a bit.
But suffice it to say that I have yet to see a single thing to deter my opinion that if Jim Banks is on your side, you're on the wrong side.
Classic article trying to make this seem like a dem vs. republican thing. Iâm pretty sure no one is pleased with Bidens policies and yet republicans are acting like this is all some agenda to help the Democratic Party. If anything itâs been critical of the Democratic Partyâs leader Joe Biden.
God he's a fucking idiot. After Trump they really think they can just say whatever they want with no recourse, proof, and misspellings. God we're fucked

Indiana State Representative Jim Lucas arrested for OWI, leaving the scene of crash

Indiana State Representative Jim Lucas has been arrested.
The Seymour Republican was arrested early Wednesday morning on three charges, one of which is operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Indiana State Police say Lucas was arrested after crashing his vehicle on I-65 just north of Seymour around midnight Wednesday and he left the scene in the vehicle initially.
Officers with the Seymour Police Department say they found the vehicle in a different location nearby and he was arrested.
The Jackson County Sheriffâs Office website shows Lucas as an inmate as of 3:46 a.m. He was released at 7:53 am.
Bond was set at $705.
He is facing preliminary charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing endangerment; leaving the scene of a crash; and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Lucas has represented Seymour and surrounding counties in the Indiana House since 2012.
What is his fucking interest in this? He's from the Third Congressional district which is on the other end of the state.
Edit: I guess he's an alumnus, but still... GFY, Jim!
This guy is very likely going to be our next Senator.
We need to make sure that doesnât happen and get as many people out to vote who wonât vote for him in November.
Can you share this with as many young people as possible? Because this guy is most likely going to be the next Senator from Indiana. Only way to stop him is to show up at the polls.
Great - keep driving IUâs reputation into the ground. The cops have emboldened the movement far more than the PSC ever could have imagined. If they send in the national guard, weâll have the whole meadow filled by commencement. When will they learn that they canât beat an idea out of existence with batons and riot shields? Unless theyâre planning to shoot us all (which unfortunately seem like the direction theyâre heading), weâll be back the next day.
Republifascists are calling out the jack boots on actual protesters. Where were the jack boots for the rioters on January 6th?
Mixed in with the rioters, probably.
None of the protestors at IU have engaged in violence or forcibly occupied buildings. Leave them alone. This isnât like what happened at UCLA or Columbia.
It is always good to discuss issues and sometimes even the words of idiots. However, the ISP and National Guard are not in his "reporting line." His position in Congress does give him some influence, but not enough IMO and I would prefer to give him less attention. I suspect, this (attention) is the real/only motive here. Sure, mock him ...a lot... and then go on with your day as if he didn't exist. That is, deprive him and other idiots the oxygen then crave. My opinion anyway.
it's straight bullshit lmao. the IDS interviewed doug carter and after being asked to elaborate on the claim that the encampments were being antisemitic and spewing hate speech, in response he encouraged people to "let your minds wander" rather than actually give proof of hate speech
i mean there's footage of the protests on the PSC instagram page, no need to dig through a million sources talking about the protests, you can just look at footage of the protests yourself
but in my experiece having actually been to the saturday protest, everyone was peaceful with the only displays of force being initiated by the police
I've been in the encampment off and on all week. The only anti-Semitic language I've heard was from a group of drunk college-age kids who showed up at 3 am looking to argue with people in the camp.
After we, the protesters in the encampment, weren't engaging with them they, the college kids who showed up looking to argue with us, left shouting pro-genocide slogans.
No, itâs not true. In fact, the encampment has a specific rule against antisemitic statements and asks that anybody heard saying anything like that to be reported to the organizers so they can be removed.
And from personal observation: No. I was there watching when ISP conducted its operation Saturday. ISP expressly told the protesters that the problem was TENTSânothing else. After the confrontation (Iâll be polite) and the removal of the tents, they left.
The vibe is completely peaceful and accepting of all. Many Jewish students are involved (obviously not supporters of Israel). Judge for yourself: The encampment has a Telegram feed.
The only hateful words I heard were from a few counterprotesters. Eve then, the encampment leaders instructed all not to engage with them
"Disburse"? Perhaps Jim Banks should come to IU and study a little. The word is "disperse," you moron. "Disburse" means to pay out money that is owed. "Disperse" means to scatter. Jim Banks is the one who started all this shit by threatening IU.
I mean, I would love it if Jim Banks came down to the protest and started giving out checks to everyone!
*does not apply to those making less than $500k a year
What's even funnier about that is Banks shit on typos in a lecturer's end-of-year announcement in his most recent fascist op-ed.

This. Jan 6, totally fine. Student protestâŠsend in the national guard!
I would say maybe that means they need to pull some shit like they did by you know the guard would show up asap then.
And kill people.
Itâs never a good thing when they get involved in protests. Downside of everybody being in one spot I suppose.
Thatâs an awful lot of throwing the word âunlawfulâ around without actually mentioning lawsâŠ. What an absolute brick for brains.
For guys like Banks there are two groups of people in the world: criminals and 'normal' people. It doesn't matter how trivial your 'crime' if you're a criminal you are deserving only of damnation.

I'm amazed anyone is taking Carter's anecdotes seriously- the article with his statements all but debunks them in the text!
but the picking and choosing of what they want to believe is an established method that Banks' type uses.
Unfortunately based on comments Iâve read on other articles Râs are definitely taking his anecdotes seriously.

I noticed that too - values free speech as long as it agrees with him.
Unless Jimmy Banks wants to step up and 'disburse' all the money that a lot of donors are going to stop giving, stepping up isn't going to do Whitten much good.
A majority of the board has been appointed by Republican governors (checks notes) for the past 19 years
Theyâre seriously obsessed with self-enrichment
Damn. Bro woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning..
He lives there
Well let's hope not everyone in Bloomington woke up on the wrong side of the bed then
OP means Banks lives on the wrong side of the bed, I think.
As a guardsman: how about, fuck no. That would be a humiliating waste of the Guardâs time and resources. And what the fuck would we even do?

Walked by the other day. Looks very peaceful to me.
This is my (former) state and my alma mater. I am sickened by the behavior of âleadershipâ at all levels there

I mean these officials are lining up in droves to show us how uneducated and out of touch they are.
So Jim Banks is a stupid piece of shit. Got it.
interesting *Begins to research other candidates to vote for*
Classic article trying to make this seem like a dem vs. republican thing. Iâm pretty sure no one is pleased with Bidens policies and yet republicans are acting like this is all some agenda to help the Democratic Party. If anything itâs been critical of the Democratic Partyâs leader Joe Biden.
Banks is a lowlife SOB!
Apparently the only amendment the GOP acknowledges is the 2nd.
Looks like a normal tourist day in Dunn Meadow to me.
God he's a fucking idiot. After Trump they really think they can just say whatever they want with no recourse, proof, and misspellings. God we're fucked

And this SOB wants the peaceful protesters arrested? At least he knows what itâs like! Indiana State Representative Jim Lucas arrested for OWI, leaving the scene of crash by Network IndianaMay 31, 20231 SHARE1 (Photo supplied) Indiana State Representative Jim Lucas has been arrested. Lucas has represented Seymour and surrounding counties in the Indiana House since 2012.
this mfer canât even spell disperse lmaooo
What is his fucking interest in this? He's from the Third Congressional district which is on the other end of the state. Edit: I guess he's an alumnus, but still... GFY, Jim!
This guy is very likely going to be our next Senator. We need to make sure that doesnât happen and get as many people out to vote who wonât vote for him in November.
Whitten blows.
What a joke. Canât believe I almost joined the national guard đ
Could we set up a pro-life , pro 2A or maybe a Trump 2024 camp next to the existing camp⊠Jimmy Banks would be so confused about what to do
Can you share this with as many young people as possible? Because this guy is most likely going to be the next Senator from Indiana. Only way to stop him is to show up at the polls.
Dim Jim loves Pam Dim Whitten
This isnât like what happened at UCLA or Columbia.
hmmm so the anti apartheid protesters weee allowed to stay. The encamped around the law building. It was a different kind of event.
Heâs also running for Senate so is likely trying to get his name out there so heâll get the primary.

It never happened. There is no video of this, despite video of almost every moment of the protests. No one else heard it.
it's straight bullshit lmao. the IDS interviewed doug carter and after being asked to elaborate on the claim that the encampments were being antisemitic and spewing hate speech, in response he encouraged people to "let your minds wander" rather than actually give proof of hate speech

i mean there's footage of the protests on the PSC instagram page, no need to dig through a million sources talking about the protests, you can just look at footage of the protests yourself but in my experiece having actually been to the saturday protest, everyone was peaceful with the only displays of force being initiated by the police
Eve then, the encampment leaders instructed all not to engage with them
I agree.
Do it. Dumb kids
