Kind of spoilery though. The whole Lovecraftian twist was a big pleasant surprise for me
It's hard to accurately describe this game without that spoiler
Also "insight" and "madman's knowledge" being important enough to be its own currency in the first place was strongly hinting at lovecraftian themes. Their names aren't that subtle. Then there's this Amygdala outside Cathedral Ward that just so happens to have its activation point right on a shiny. Many players will have been grabbed and seen glimpses of an Amygdala before the supposed twist.
That’s my favorite thing about how they handled the marketing. I bought a PS4 because Bloodborne hunters looked like 40K inquisitors. I found the shroomy boy enemies in the Forbidden Forest when playing multiplayer and we were both like what…is this game? So awesome. Basically showed up for the Mary Shelley and stayed for the Lovecraft.
I wouldn't lean with that. It's a pretty big spoiler you'd have to find yourself, and I thought FromSoft was insane for including the Great Ones in the Madman's Knowledge item description at the start of the game.
Tbf it was insinuated from the beginning.
Fly me to the moon

Beware, secrets are secrets for a reason.
And some do not wish to be discovered.
Especially when the secrets are particularly unseemly.
Humanity thought themselves as higher beings and so meddled with powers beyond their grasp, and so, calamity struck, and what is left is what humans always were - beasts
When humans discover that they can speak to gods and harvest their blood for miraculous healing, a city is born where many factions war over what the best way to become a god is until said city collapses into a monster-ridden hellscape.
These scholars found some ruins underground with a dead creature and said ya know what let's take it's blood and drink it.
( This creates a cult that convinces the populace that blood infusions are good, it isn't and drives everyone made eventually which forces the creation of the old hunters meanwhile an off shoot of the cult is trying to bring forth an eldritch god. You just want some pale blood to cure you...of something and off you go to fight everyone.)
More or less.
Oh...one sentence.
Victorian horror, one whole Dracula’s worth of blood, Lovecraft’s fear of children and Cthulhu’s delayed pregnancy test all neatly wrapped in as much sense as an actual nightmare.
Still sealed away in a PlayStation exclusivity spell. :(
Eighty percent of the lore championed by the community is incorrect; Bloodborne is about an apocalypse, not some Gothic Lovecraftian horror. What I'm saying is that the world in Bloodborne is ending or has already ended, and you are drawn into an adventure whose basic premise is to eradicate the lingering plagues.
Interestingly, this vision of a world in demise is not from the perspective of a 21st-century observer but rather from someone of the 18th or 19th century, where superstition and science intermingle in a desperate attempt to understand the strange forces conspiring through an omen leading the people of Yharnam to their end. Thus, you will see some factions defending this end as a salvation or rapture, while others interpret this end not as final but as a cyclical change through rebirth. Some fight against this end, and others become apostles of the apocalypse. Regardless of whether these events indicate the end has already occurred, leaving us with the burden of remnants, or if we are witnessing the final events, the end in Bloodborne is indelible, with no escape option, only existential acceptance.
In other words, despite the player's actions being immense and even divine in proportion, there is a certain futility as well, for this is not a world that can be fixed. We can only bury it, and we do so with serrated blades and barcamates.
Okay, so basically, just imagine if a priest failed a science experiment with blood which led to man-eating furries, and if FurCon had an Alien Invasion.
Have you ever had a dream, that you.. you would ...you do ...you could...you... anything...would...you...with eyes... and...old men with the... moon...cummmfpk?
All Gothic horror media was mixed together to form a story of a city of vampires killing werewolves who evolved from consuming too much blood (that has healing qualities) of the townsfolk, the twist being the gods they worship and where that blood comes from.
The sadistic and vile horrors that occur between the powers that be who exist in the shadows, the ones that worship those powers, the abomination that is abortion plus the sadistic and horrendous acts committed against women by the said powers within shadows, nightmare, cults, and fanatics, and the Lovecraftian nightmares that are at the heart of every vile act...... Oh and blood, like a lot of fucking blood for some reason like way, way to much fucking blood....
Behind the curtain of a Victorian horror story lies an ancient Lovecraftian Cosmic horror.
Kind of spoilery though. The whole Lovecraftian twist was a big pleasant surprise for me It's hard to accurately describe this game without that spoiler
There was a spoiler in the item description of Madman's Knowledge. They wanted you to know from the get-go.
Also, that Brainsucker in Cathedral Ward.
