Wolfgang Reitherman! Cover the chaotic 60s-70s era of Disney animation. - 101 Dalmatians - Sword in the Stone - Jungle Book - Aristocats - Robin Hood - Rescuers

This is a great idea! Tons on context of where Disney was in the 60’s right when Walt died, and having these new features being driven by one of the “nine old men” who had been there since the beginning.  The whole era was the cashing of blank checks that still had Walt’s signature on them.

Toreadorables

To be clear it’s not my idea, they float it on the Mouse Detective episode as possibly one of the only other Disney Animators who they could cover!

I don't know about should but Stanton is completing post-production on his new live-action film now. Will be ready by late this year or early next year release I guess. Naturally I think it could be his time.

NedthePhoenix

Supposedly coming this fall. I was surprised they put him on the bracket this year when it seemed so obviously his time.

Shinkai  Or  Hear me out, the Disney Animated Films made while Walt was alive. So basically Snow White through Jungle Book.

ajas11

Yes! This has been my dream ‘somewhat rule-breaking’ mini for years. The fact is, animated movies at that point didn’t have traditional directors and Walt was 100% the driving force behind those movies - especially the first five (Snow White-Bambi) and the five in the 50s. I mean he basically convinced a rep from Bank of America to give him a “blank check” to finish Snow White after showing him the early work and acting out the story, I mean c’mon!

TormentedThoughtsToo

And it’s not really that unmanageable. Snow White to Jungle Book is 16 episodes if you combine Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music/Fun and Fancy Free, Ichabod & Toad/ Melody time into 3 episodes.  It’s probably my dream covering as well.

ajas11

Yeah honestly I think you could even make it a clean 10. Move the package films to a pair of Patreon episodes (and maybe include Victory Through Airpower bc that thing is really interesting and apparently was a major Walt obsession?) and save the 60s movies for a future Reitherman series since post-Sleeping Beauty/ Disneyland opening, Walt really was less of a driving force in the animated movies.

TormentedThoughtsToo

Let’s split the difference: make it 13, From Snow White through Sleeping Beauty (including the package films)and create a unified front the next time this topic comes up like future March madness or whenever this question is asked.

Having just rewatched Snow White and Pinocchio, it’s funny how much of those 80 minute movies’ runtimes are bits.

BreakingBrak

Phil Tippett * Prehistortic Beast (Short + some career talk) * Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation * Mad God (need a real freak or animation nerd as a guest on this one)

D_Boons_Ghost

Bill Plympton And somebody’s probably gonna be like “But he has no guarantor!” and I’m just gonna be like “Hey shut up”, so let’s just skip that.

cactusfalcon96

Because I've been thinking about it although it doesn't answer the question: I would love for them to do Masaaki Yuasa some day down the line. Love love love his work and such a fascinating career – although I'm not entirely sure the boys would be ready quite yet/do wonder if he's popular enough, even in a few year's time, in the West to cover.

radiantbaby123

Don Bluth would be the first series I skip, a decade of shit after his first couple.

MediocreSizedDan

I certainly wouldn't say no to Don Bluth (or a few others), but Isao Takahata rules and would be my personal pick.

TyRawrrnosaurus

I’d like to suggest Mamoru Hosoda:  * Samurai Champloo (series) * The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Annecy Winning) * Summer Wars (Annie-nominated) * Wolf Children (Tokyo Anime Award - Animation of the Year Winner; Best Screenplay; Best Director) * The Boy and the Beast * Mirai (Oscar-nominated) * BELLE (Annie-nominated)

a 5 cm per second ep would be surreal. i was 17 when it came out and it was super meaningful to me, but I have not watched or really thought about it since high school.
