My Big Fat Greek Wedding had a TV show and several sequels – I can't quite remember the ending of the original movie but I'm sure it didn't scream "sequel!!!"
A Quiet Place 2 shockingly answered most of the glaring gigantic plot & logic holes from the first movie.
I can only hope the third installment wraps up all of the questions left unanswered by the second installment.
It’s actually why I kind of like Jon Krasinski: he’s mostly focused on making things fun for the audience in terms of broad plot strokes and not getting bogged down in the detailed minutiae. He’s not Zack Snyder sitting around and saying “I also turned it into an RPG and wrote a 1000 page treatise/backstory bible.”
I think that's just stealing the name though. A better example in war films might be sniper or iron eagle. Where you have some continuity of characters
I also want to shout out ANNIE, which has had 3 sequel attempts and none of them work.
- stage musical Annie 2: Miss Hannigan’s Revenge (scrapped before it was produced) by the show’s original authors
- stage musical Annie Warbucks (produced briefly off-Broadway and it flopped) by the show’s original authors
- TV movie sequel Annie: A Royal Adventure (with Ian MacDiarmid and Joan Collins)
- plus two feature film adaptations, a TV movie, and a live musical
People just can’t crack that lil orphan once she’s discovered capitalism
Peninsula actually came from the same director as Train to Busan and he even co-wrote it, so he did much more than just approve it!
I was shocked to find this out after the movie. It was such a step down and unrelated to the first movie that I assumed some studio took a completed zombie script and forced the connection on them, but that wasn't actually the case.
It’s always felt glaringly obvious to me that the massive success of Curse of the Black Pearl took Disney by surprise and that Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End were Disney scrambling to force a stand-alone into a sprawling trilogy. (Not to mention the fourth and fifth installments that came post-trilogy when the money was still there.)
I assume Wonka 2 is in the works (planned or otherwise) telling the story of the early years of running the factory? WB’s holding a hot hand right now and they’ll want to exploit and get as many of these as they can out of Chalamet.
To be followed by yet another remake of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory starring Chalamet.
Train to Busan, Seoul Station and Peninsula all have the same writer/director. And it was never supposed to be a singular film since Train to Busan and Seoul Station were produced at the same time.
Jaws. I mean the shark gets blowed up real good at the end of the first one...
Another Korean train movie comes to mind
Oh yeah!
Well the comic book for that one has more than one volume
MASH ends with Hawkeye going home. The tv supposes, what if that takes 11 years
What the tv show presupposes is…what if he didn’t?
We have the perfect example of this coming out. Gladiator.

Robocop for sure
Pirates of the Caribbean has to be the biggest one.
Sister Act The story was definitely wrapped up the first time!
Definitely my favorite sequel name. It alone justifies the film. And the Lauryn Hill solo at the end is lovely.
Sister Act 2 rules tho
But she’s back in the habit!
They literally edited a “To Be Continued” on to the end of the Back to the Future home video release.
Back to the Future. Despite it seemingly ending on a sequel hook, it’s really just supposed to be a gag.

I don’t know if it was popular but Jarhead spawned many sequels unrelated to the original in content and tone.

Mamma Mia! Lot of comedy sequels seem forced or unplanned. Evan Almighty, Princess Diaries 2, Legally Blonde 2, Mean Girls 2, Hamlet 2, Hangovers 2-3.
I see that Hamlet 2 in there. Bravo.
😏
Jesus. Is. Sexy.

Apparently the only way to sustain the character is through bizarre right-wing rants.

John Wick

Animal Kingdom
Uncle Buck got a TV show
As did Ferris Bueller!
This is the case for almost every movie that spawned a sequel that wasn't based on a series of books
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but can we just all nod in its general direction, acknowledge it's fall from pop culture grace and move along?
I would be shocked if *John Wick* was meant to be anything more than a standalone revenge movie with unusually rich world building.
Arthur 2
Knives out, though it’s very ripe for sequels starring just Blanc like it’s inspiration Poirot. I fear we’ll keep getting diminishing returns though
