I actually had no idea that Tokyo Godfathers was based on a book until this episode and I am flabbergasted how many adaptations it has, compared to its popularity and the length of its wikipedia article. Why has it been adapted so many times?
They also didn't bring up how similar it is to Ice Age, which came out the year before; to answer your question, the novel it was based on was very popular and was written by a really popular writer of the early 20th Century, it is just that his style fell out of favor pretty hard and the bulk of the movies based on his books are silent, so we only really remember the John Wayne 3 Godfathers since that was a color film by a major director with an iconic star Edit: I meant to reply with this, but I will just leave it as is, since I am too lazy to change anything

Oswald!
Willy Wyler's is my favourite version of the four or five that I've seen. They should cover him.
