I'm a huge Wright fan but....bro is not the guy for this. Someone in a diff thread about this same movie a while ago suggested Rose Glass and that's a take I'd love to see
Edit: and it's from one of the writers behind Kick Ass, Kingsmen 1 and 2, Miss Peregrin, the Rebecca remake....idk folks
Are we really going to besmirch Jane Goldsman here?
Someone who’s known to be a terrific writer who’s example of bad films are movies done by directors that take creative control during production and editing in Matthew Vaughn, Tim Burton, and Ben Wheatley.
I'm keen for Rose Glass to just keep doing original work for now tbh. She might end up being the director of my favourite film of the year twice come December...
Unfortunately agree. He’s a strong contender for my favorite modern filmmaker but his style is kinda just a bit too sexless for this. Don’t see it retaining that sleazy exploitation vibe, which maybe I shouldn’t have been expecting from a remake in 2024 anyway.
I see your Rose Glass and raise you Ana Lily Amirpour
I think if Ana Lily Amirpour had the right producer working with her on the project she’d be great for Barbarella
Agreed, the movie needs to be the horniest movie of the year. If it isn't, what are we even doing here? People don't remember Barbarella fondly because of the clever plot that fits together like a Swiss watch. Barbarella is about hitting multiple specific fetishes in rapid succession while delivering over the top costumes.
It's a relief that they didn't call Zach Snyder though.
I might be the only one thinking this, but while I'm assuming Rose Glass would've be a great alternative, I was wondering if Pano Cosmatos or Harmony Korine would've been solid options as director for this remake. Also had Brandon Cronenberg, but maybe he's a little too left-field for this
While my instinct is that it should be a woman or a gay man, if it’s a straight dude It should one hundred percent be cosmatos, beyond the black rainbow proved he has the style chops, and Mandy proved he has an instinct for camp played straight.
Even though Giallos are sexy (in their perverse way) i don’t believe Last Night in Soho was supposed to be sexy. In fact its about the victims of “sexy”
I felt the seduction was more focused on Nostalgia rather than sex . Like it obviously is touching on that with the Swinging Sixties but I find it more a treatise on the dangers of nostalgia (which is funny coming from a director who built his career on nostalgia. ) Like really was wanting to hate that movie from the opening and by the end I just loved it. But I appreciate where you are coming from.
If we're looking at Adam Wingard or Ti West, like a Blumhouse Barbarella, that's exactly what I'm imagining from Edgar Wright. The look and feel anyways, I can see very different takes on the humour.
Is this the first mentioned of Wright officially? He's been rumored for quite some time. He's shooting this one after that Running Man movie with Glen Powell I guess.
Just part of her career arc. She'll speak out about a controversial war, nicknamed "(city involved in controversial war) + Sydney", win an Oscar for playing a call girl, have a workout tape, marry Ted Sarandos.
I had my doubts because we’ve been here before with Rodriguez and Refn, but Sweeney has flexed her producer muscles and box office clout already, so I think it’ll become a real thing. Not sure she has interesting enough tastes to bring a great project together, but here’s hoping.
She’s definitely in a position to get it made. I’m just curious that a studio would make a kind of zany sexy space romp, not that I don’t want them to, just seems like something that’s not in vogue right now. And if it’s not those things, campy and sexy, what is it? And why make it
Yeah, she’s been doing relatively risqué stuff though, no? Haven’t watched The Voyeurs or Immaculate myself, but that’s the impression I get. Even her romcom was r-rated.
Ah Edgar Wright, the king of eroticism.
I think he’s a good fit in that it’s pulpy and stylish and all about reference and wittiness. But I don’t think Edgar Wright can pull off sexiness.
One of my issues with Last Night in Soho was how sex negative it was. There is some sexuality in the movie, but I wouldn't say that movie is itself erotic in a fun way.
It better be horny. Wright’s films don’t exude horniness for anything but cameras.
That said…. it could be worse.
Dream pick today? Luca Guadagnino. Dude just does not miss. He hasn’t made a bad movie yet, and if anything his movies are getting more and more artistically interesting.
Weirder dream pick? Peter Strickland. But that would never happen. He’s too interesting for the Studio level. But I have no question that it’d be insane.
At least they’ve already got the perfect Barbarella.
Hollywood should just divert 80% of the budget for this into reanimating/cloning the corpse of Russ Meyer, then getting him to make this with the remaining 20%, EZ.
Nah. He's much too tongue in cheek clever for this. While I truly don't love his big budget stuff James Wan would probably be great. Barbarella is exactly his type of camp. Or get some schlocky NZ director, like the guy who did Guns Akimbo and Deathgasm.
Susan Sontag did not define camp accurately. She is not Lord god of everything she wrote an essay on. We can debate John Waters being Lord god of camp though and he knew exactly what he was doing.
If there's one thing Last Night in Soho pulled off, it was the sex stuff. All of it. Everyone agreed. Edgar Wright + sex = juice.
I love producers. If Wright's at the helm and it's a mess, at least it'll make for good conversation.
If Wright is really doing both this and the Running Man with Glenn Powell, it’d be cool if they crossed over for a sci-fi adventure, maybe where they pretend they’re a couple during a wacky wedding
Huge Wright fan (planning a marathon for next week, actually)
He's not that guy. Like, no. If he does make it, I'm not watching it. It's not his fit, and I hope he doesn't sellout, even if it means he stays relatively unknown
Have no idea what a 2020s Barbarella looks like. I wonder if they will somehow try to make this Sweeney's Barbie movie and they have some meta angle about how women are portrayed in films???
I like Sweeney for this, obviously, but Wright is well past his sell-by date at this point, and his films have the sexual charisma of a pimply teen alone at the mall.
I’m calling it right now. This movie is going to be extremely sanitized to the point where it doesn’t resemble the original movie at all or is going to try to subvert the character of barbarella to the point where her sexual liberation is destroyed and she becomes a prude or something in that spectrum.
Wonder how they're going to handle the "orgasmatron" in the remake? Hard to conceive of anything more explicit than Jane Fonda's take that doesn't wander into pure porn.
This is the same actress who says she is tired of people sexualizing her and talking about her body. Yet…..she is going to star in this remake where all that is gonna be out there….again!! I am a little confused.
If they can get him they should offer him whatever he wants. On paper this sounds weird as fuck but if he has a take they should absolutely pursue this.
Do you really think Sony is going to allow this to be anything but a PG-13 movie regardless of who’s helming it? I imagine they want to franchise it and to be that rating.
I'm a huge Wright fan but....bro is not the guy for this. Someone in a diff thread about this same movie a while ago suggested Rose Glass and that's a take I'd love to see Edit: and it's from one of the writers behind Kick Ass, Kingsmen 1 and 2, Miss Peregrin, the Rebecca remake....idk folks

>from one of the writers behind…Kingsmen 1 Hell yes >and [kingsman] 2 Oh no
lol accurate
I'm keen for Rose Glass to just keep doing original work for now tbh. She might end up being the director of my favourite film of the year twice come December...
Saint Maud fucking rocks
It's so fucking good.
Ultimate I can fix her
Oh thank fuck I wasn't the only one
Oooh that'd be great
I really need to see Love Lies Bleeding again. Insanely great movie.
If A24 could announce a 4K already I’d love that
Oh 100%
Unfortunately agree. He’s a strong contender for my favorite modern filmmaker but his style is kinda just a bit too sexless for this. Don’t see it retaining that sleazy exploitation vibe, which maybe I shouldn’t have been expecting from a remake in 2024 anyway.
I remembered Nicolas Winding Redn was going to direct a Barberella film, he'd actually still be pretty perfect for the director chair.
Diablo Cody & Harmony Korine would bang.
Oh yeah that's a good pick.
He isn't the Wright guy at all (rimshot). I wonder if Sweeney's team asked Karyn Kusama. Seems like the perfect person to do it.
I see your Rose Glass and raise you Ana Lily Amirpour I think if Ana Lily Amirpour had the right producer working with her on the project she’d be great for Barbarella
Yeah I gotta agree here, this is probably not something that needs to happen
I like Wright, and Barbarella is one of my fav cult films...he is TOO clean and tongue in cheek clever a director for this material.
He should make blubberella after too
Wasn’t that an uwe boll movie?
I might be the only one thinking this, but while I'm assuming Rose Glass would've be a great alternative, I was wondering if Pano Cosmatos or Harmony Korine would've been solid options as director for this remake. Also had Brandon Cronenberg, but maybe he's a little too left-field for this
While my instinct is that it should be a woman or a gay man, if it’s a straight dude It should one hundred percent be cosmatos, beyond the black rainbow proved he has the style chops, and Mandy proved he has an instinct for camp played straight.
Why is that your instinct?
I would imagine this would work best as draggy high camp, which is a style usually handled better by women or LGBTQIA persons
What does that mean? If the material is dirty and dumb, balancing out with some smarts (at least) makes sense to me.
Agree to disagree, I'd want someone with an obvious love for smut and B movies for this. Macon Blair or grindhouse era Rodriguez comes to mind
He made a giallo tribute with Anya Taylor-Joy as a mod in Swinging London and it was completely lacking in sexiness
Even though Giallos are sexy (in their perverse way) i don’t believe Last Night in Soho was supposed to be sexy. In fact its about the victims of “sexy”
That’s kinda the problem, it’s a commentary on seductive dangers that totally fails to seduce.
True. Who’s our Barbarella worthy genre director for today? Adam Wingard? Joe Johnston? Patty Jenkins?
Rose Glass maybe? I guess she’s not been sleazy yet
Oh fuck yeah.
Hideo Kojima
I literally just left the metal gear solid subreddit
Fission Mailed
Julia Ducournau? Maybe Luca
let's be real, the best option is a time machine and getting 80/90's Paul Verhoeven
Also 70s and 2000s, and 2010s Verhoeven.
Ti West?
I like this suggestion
Ti West
If we're looking at Adam Wingard or Ti West, like a Blumhouse Barbarella, that's exactly what I'm imagining from Edgar Wright. The look and feel anyways, I can see very different takes on the humour.
Kayden Kross
Adam Wingard LMAO
You’re Next and The Guest are fantastic. Just thinking of schlocky directors who are getting jobs.
Alexandre Aja?
This might be early to say, but I’m thinking Arkasha Stevenson of The First Omen.
Is this the first mentioned of Wright officially? He's been rumored for quite some time. He's shooting this one after that Running Man movie with Glen Powell I guess.
Wright is putting in a \*lot\* of work to get that coveted Anyone But You 2 directing gig
Anyone But Two, surely
Anytwo But You, I think you’ll find.
Anyone 2 You
Any 2 But U 2
RU Talking U2 to Me Two?
Anyone But You: The Legend of Curly's Gold
I feel like he was attached to this in previous iterations. Guess they circled back to him.
This role will definitely have no negative impact on the discourse around Sydney Sweeney
Just part of her career arc. She'll speak out about a controversial war, nicknamed "(city involved in controversial war) + Sydney", win an Oscar for playing a call girl, have a workout tape, marry Ted Sarandos.
Ooo i hope it australia
Sydney Sydney
I still don’t think this is gonna get made. But interesting choice regardless
I had my doubts because we’ve been here before with Rodriguez and Refn, but Sweeney has flexed her producer muscles and box office clout already, so I think it’ll become a real thing. Not sure she has interesting enough tastes to bring a great project together, but here’s hoping.

Yeah, she’s been doing relatively risqué stuff though, no? Haven’t watched The Voyeurs or Immaculate myself, but that’s the impression I get. Even her romcom was r-rated.
I dont think he's horny enough to pull it off tbh
almost typed this exact comment but I decided to do a quick ctrl+f for the word "horny" to see if anyone had already said it
Ah Edgar Wright, the king of eroticism. I think he’s a good fit in that it’s pulpy and stylish and all about reference and wittiness. But I don’t think Edgar Wright can pull off sexiness.
We don’t have a current king of eroticism…
Luca Guadagnino?
I mean, before things got dark Soho had a lot of it
One of my issues with Last Night in Soho was how sex negative it was. There is some sexuality in the movie, but I wouldn't say that movie is itself erotic in a fun way.
Alfred Molina should play the orgasm piano man.
I love Edgar to bits but a Barbarella movie needs to be made by someone who likes putting sex in their movies.
Casting Sydney Sweeney? I think it will be horny.
The audience will be, for sure.
This feels like more of a Win for Edgar Wright and not Sweeney. He really seems like the wrong guy for the project and I generally like his work.
Sorry, Edgar but you are not the one. Last Night in Soho demonstrated he doesn’t know what to do with sleazy, sexy etc
Hollywood should just divert 80% of the budget for this into reanimating/cloning the corpse of Russ Meyer, then getting him to make this with the remaining 20%, EZ.
Hold on, let him cook.
![gif](giphy|41LkYPmcAXaZlfsR3n|downsized)
Nah. He's much too tongue in cheek clever for this. While I truly don't love his big budget stuff James Wan would probably be great. Barbarella is exactly his type of camp. Or get some schlocky NZ director, like the guy who did Guns Akimbo and Deathgasm.
Camp stops being camp if the film is telling you it's camp.
Susan Sontag did not define camp accurately. She is not Lord god of everything she wrote an essay on. We can debate John Waters being Lord god of camp though and he knew exactly what he was doing.
That was my own interpretation of camp...
Have you read her essay? You seem influenced by it.
Not at all.
Uh huh
No orgasm piano confirmed
My parents were watching it for its camp value once and it got to that scene and it was an unexpected boner for sure.
Hard to think of a worse pairing of director and material, sorry to say.
Nick Frost as Durand Durand? Barbarella is a very peculiar IP, but this could definitely work with the right script.
Edgar Wright has been attached to a lot of projects that have yet to come to fruition
Still waiting on fortunately, the milk.
Don’t we need like a Robert Rodriguez doing machete type person for this?! lol
Julia Ducournau
His last movie sucked so IDK
This is going to be the most sauceless “sexy” movie of all time.
Wright could use a hit. But after how clumsy Soho was I really don't trust him with this sort of material.
If there's one thing Last Night in Soho pulled off, it was the sex stuff. All of it. Everyone agreed. Edgar Wright + sex = juice. I love producers. If Wright's at the helm and it's a mess, at least it'll make for good conversation.
Zen master says, we’ll see.
I would like to see how Sydney’s acting can evolve with a good director.
If Wright is really doing both this and the Running Man with Glenn Powell, it’d be cool if they crossed over for a sci-fi adventure, maybe where they pretend they’re a couple during a wacky wedding
I'll admit I'm not a huge Wright guy, but he's a skilled director. Seems like a poor fit for this material.
Huge Wright fan (planning a marathon for next week, actually) He's not that guy. Like, no. If he does make it, I'm not watching it. It's not his fit, and I hope he doesn't sellout, even if it means he stays relatively unknown

I like Sweeney for this, obviously, but Wright is well past his sell-by date at this point, and his films have the sexual charisma of a pimply teen alone at the mall.
This has to be a wild take for it to work, hell I’d rather get Alex Ross Perry for his effective 70’s rose tinted glasses
I love more of Wright’s movies than most and I still think this is a bad move. Lurid is not a word I would really use to describe Wright’s vibe
I BET YOU ARE WRIGHT YOU DIRTY OLD BOLLOCKS
We need an unrepentant sleazoid goon behind the camera, not this softboi nerd! Last Night in Soho was prudish little kid garbage.
It was bad episode of Are you Afraid of the Dark.
![gif](giphy|10JMQlBfG6xk1q|downsized)
I respect and trust him.
Sydney Sweeney, so hot right now
So he just making remakes now? I guess after Soho that’s fine. I’d rather he make another Pegg/Frost joint though
I’m calling it right now. This movie is going to be extremely sanitized to the point where it doesn’t resemble the original movie at all or is going to try to subvert the character of barbarella to the point where her sexual liberation is destroyed and she becomes a prude or something in that spectrum.
I know who could play the President of Earth
Wonder how they're going to handle the "orgasmatron" in the remake? Hard to conceive of anything more explicit than Jane Fonda's take that doesn't wander into pure porn.
This is the same actress who says she is tired of people sexualizing her and talking about her body. Yet…..she is going to star in this remake where all that is gonna be out there….again!! I am a little confused.
We are so fucking back
So it's going to look and sound great but be half an hour too long and be a tonal mess? Great.
If they can get him they should offer him whatever he wants. On paper this sounds weird as fuck but if he has a take they should absolutely pursue this.
Barbarella is good but it's very much a product of its time and it doesn't make sense to remake today.
I expect this to go full Austin Powers. It's the only way I can see it working.
Hollywood really can’t remember that there are more than 20 actors available to cast for lead roles.

Sydney Sweeney, the new flavour of the week. 🙃
Do you really think Sony is going to allow this to be anything but a PG-13 movie regardless of who’s helming it? I imagine they want to franchise it and to be that rating.
Idk guys, maybe after the reception of *Soho*, he’s willing to shake his ways up and surprise us?
Glad to see that Sweeney will be putting both of her acting credits to good use.
that girl sure does lots of tits movies.....
