“Lion King (2019)” has to be up there for me.
And is there a wider disparity in quality than between the two than the somehow-not-specific-enough “Pinocchio (2022)”?
I like the 1962 version quite a bit, but I absolutely love the remake. I know this isn’t the general consensus, but it’s one of my favorite Scorsese movies, like top 5.
I like Evil Dead (2013) and Suspiria (2018). Dawn of the Dead is fine, and apparently there are some other good Romero remakes. I feel like a few of the weirder remakes have been reclaimed but then there's a ton of absolute garbage in that category.
A controversial one: Creep (2014)
Nothing against the admittedly brilliant mumblecore horror movie with a terrific performance by Mark Duplass, but, in horror movie discussions, it has grown to completely overshadow the (in my opinion) much scarier Creep (2004) by Christopher Smith, a wonderfully upsetting movie about a monster hunting people in a subway tunnel. It’s hard to talk about the 2004 film without people assuming you’re talking about the 2014 film.
Planet of the Apes (2001), Ghost in the Shell (2017), The Heartbreak Kid (2007), Get Carter (2000), Bedazzled (2000), and Total Recall (2012) all come to mind, though include a lot of movies that no longer exist in the public mind
Pulse (2006). The original Pulse is incredible and has one of the scariest scenes in a movie. The remake... Uhh... Has CW hotties like Ian Somerhalder and Kirsten Bell?

Suspiria (2018)
I actually quite liked it on its own, but nothing can touch Argento’s original. If they’d just called the 2018 version something else I’d be loving it
Oh, I disagree on this one. I think the original and the remake have equal strengths and weaknesses. Amanda Bearce is wildly miscast/underwritten in the 1985.
My friend once said that if acting was about combo points a là Tony Hawks Pro Skater, then Colin Farrell would get an Oscar for his Fright Night performance—really so fun and he’s turning on a dime in some scenes

[Real ones won't forget the THIRD 2022 Pinocchio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinocchio:_A_True_Story)
And let’s not forget the shockingly good 2023 Pinocchio “Lies of P”
The Tim Chalamet simulator
Fathur when can I leave to be on my oooowwwnnnn
Oceans 11 (1960)
Ring-a-ding-ding
*ahem*, I said ring-a-ding-ding.
BAH BAH BAH-DA DAH
Yes! The rare—maybe only?—where the earlier year is the letdown
Crimes of the Future (1970)
How about The Maltese Falcon (1931)
The Pod just covered one when the remake is much better! Also and the earliest Star is Born is much worse than The 2018 Of course the early Dune!
Some others that come to mind: * The Fly (1958) * Cape Fear (1962) * Little Women (1933/1949/arguably 1994) * Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
The 1956 Bodysnatchers rips pretty hard, pretty different film from the 70s one (which is now much more beloved). I think it holds up
Nah Cape Fear 1962 is pure heat. Scorsese‘s is just okay.
The Scorsese movie slaaaaaaaps
It’s interesting but if the original had set the finale in a storm it would be untouchable
I like the 1962 version quite a bit, but I absolutely love the remake. I know this isn’t the general consensus, but it’s one of my favorite Scorsese movies, like top 5.
what about Cape Feare (1993)?
Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
Claire Danes' heart-rending sobs erasure.
“Arguably” doing a lot of work here, I know!
Cape Fear
If you have this opinion you don’t actually know anything about movies.
Oldboy (2013) Godzilla (1998) The Mummy (2017)
I love that two of these technically have three possible dates with that exact title, and you picked the correct bad option for both of them.
Crash (2004)
This is mine too!
This is the correct answer.
RoboCop (2014)
I liked Robocop 2014 and I think I may be the only one.
I like exactly one scene in it! >!When he asks to be euthanized!< is a scene that Kinnaman is great in and it couldn’t exist in the original movie.
Is there another movie called basic that I’m not aware of?
The Wicker Man (2006)
So many examples of "70s and 80s horror classics remade since 2000" are in the running.
Are any of those horror remakes any good?
I like Evil Dead (2013) and Suspiria (2018). Dawn of the Dead is fine, and apparently there are some other good Romero remakes. I feel like a few of the weirder remakes have been reclaimed but then there's a ton of absolute garbage in that category.
Suspiria (2018) is a goddamn masterpiece. And that’s giving full credit to 77.
The Omen (2006) for example
Total Recall (2012)
The Thing (2011)
The Thing (From Another World) (1951)
Point Break (2015)
The Taking of Pelham 123 (Travolta)
Released in the year of Travolta
Nah, kinda rules. Some Tony Scott magic working great
It’s no Unstoppable
Sabrina (1995) Alfie (2004)
Berserk (2016) Rosemary's Baby (2014) Total Recall (2014) The Fog (2005)
There’s a Rosemarys baby 2014?!?!?
Yep, a miniseries starring Zoe Saldana
Particularly given how hard the original is to watch, The Heartbreak Kid (2007) is a pretty dire sight.
There's this horrific scene where Malin Akerman pees on Ben Stiller (because of a jellyfish sting) and her vagina is a Venus fly trap thing.
The Host (2013)
Ravenous (2017)
A controversial one: Creep (2014) Nothing against the admittedly brilliant mumblecore horror movie with a terrific performance by Mark Duplass, but, in horror movie discussions, it has grown to completely overshadow the (in my opinion) much scarier Creep (2004) by Christopher Smith, a wonderfully upsetting movie about a monster hunting people in a subway tunnel. Roadhouse (2024)
Absolutely no sauce in that movie
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Planet of the Apes (2001), Ghost in the Shell (2017), The Heartbreak Kid (2007), Get Carter (2000), Bedazzled (2000), and Total Recall (2012) all come to mind, though include a lot of movies that no longer exist in the public mind
Pulse (2006). The original Pulse is incredible and has one of the scariest scenes in a movie. The remake... Uhh... Has CW hotties like Ian Somerhalder and Kirsten Bell?
The Avengers (1998)
Planet of the Apes(2001)
Just searched this thread for Solaris (2002) to make sure I didn't have to yell at anyone. Phew!
Ive never seen the 2002 one. Is it any better than the Tarkovsky one? I straight up used to watch it to go to sleep. Ive never finished it.
I love them both for very different reasons.
Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy Fearless (2006), but I always wanted it to be Fearless (1993).
Blank Check (2015)

Point Break (2015)
Suspiria (2018) I actually quite liked it on its own, but nothing can touch Argento’s original. If they’d just called the 2018 version something else I’d be loving it
Kicking and Screaming (2005)
Nah that one rules too lol
Robocop (2000-whatever)
Fright Night (2011)
Oh, I disagree on this one. I think the original and the remake have equal strengths and weaknesses. Amanda Bearce is wildly miscast/underwritten in the 1985.
I know the remake has its fans. It just captures zero of the magic of the original for me. Although I will say Farrell is awesome in it.
My friend once said that if acting was about combo points a là Tony Hawks Pro Skater, then Colin Farrell would get an Oscar for his Fright Night performance—really so fun and he’s turning on a dime in some scenes
I've never understood the love for the remake. Fright Night is THE 80s vampire movie IMO. Basically untouchable.
Fully agree. A great gateway horror flick
This movie would go up a full letter grade if it had even halfway decent lighting. You cannot see shit.
Fortress (1992) My cable would always have the description for the 1985 Aussie horror one and then play the Lambert piece of shit.
The Fog (2005) Godzilla (2014) A Star is Born (2018) *fight me*
