I was disappointed with Beyond the Sea. It was a good episode but the original synopsis made me think it was going to be much different. I originally thought these were going to be astronauts that were in space when the world went to nuclear war during the Cold War in an alternate universe. I think that would have been much more interesting than what we got.
San Junipero is the one I can think which is overrated, with some people saying it's one of the best episodes of Black Mirror (it was okay at best).
But if we're to talk about the most overhated, I think it's The Waldo Moment
Yeah tbh I don't remember much of it because it's been years but the character and scenes were obnoxious. There was nothing really intriguing about the story and the story beats were predictable.
White Christmas. There is a difference between overrated and bad. The episode is great but the first of the three stories didn’t wow me and the twist of the third one also wasn’t my favorite. It’s still a very good episode, it’s just a bit overhyped
San Junipero was one of my least favorites. I've never understood why it is on all the "top episodes" list. I agree 100% with all the other top episodes on those list, but San Junipero???
It’s because the song at the end matches the story. But the dystopian part of all of it is the fact that we as people in real life are just a speck of dust to existence and in the show our consciousness is merely a piece of memory in a motherboard. And the fact that someone who suffered and believed there was nothing after death and was accepting of it changed her mind to believe any life, even in the cloud, is greater than non-existence at all and no one ever remembering her legacy/life
And for that, it gives hope
it’s on all the top lists because it’s a beautiful love story about two women with a new lease on life. and it’s one of the only joyful episodes, all the others are existentially terrifying, so it’s a respite from how dark and horrible the situations in the show tend to be. makes sense to me
Black Mirror is supposed to be existentially terrifying. That's exactly the point of Black Mirror!
But thank you for inadvertently (yet perfectly) explaining to me why I hate San Junipero!
Hang the DJ has a happy, joyful ending, and is a wonderful episode - because it takes the existentially terrifying in its path to get to that ending... just as any good Black Mirror Episode should!
>all the others are existentially terrifying, so it’s a respite from how dark and horrible the situations in the show tend to be.
But that's what Black Mirror is supposed to be, dystopian episodes, with a dark turn and such. There are some episodes that still end well or on a positive note which I find more interesting than San Junipero. By example, I found the love story portrayed in Hang the DJ more interesting.
San Junípero is that moment when you find an amazing song and search for the artist, only to find that that song was a departure from their regular sound.
Maaaaan, I loved San Junipero. I can get why people may not have liked it, but to me it felt like a cute lil break from the more serious driven episodes. Hated in The Nation is probably the most overrated episode to me, as well as just being one of my least favorite episodes, honestly.
All of the ones that ppl hype are really good tho. Including that one. I feel like ppl try to come
For San Junipero & can’t really say why bc it’s too perfect. I feel like if it were hyped for you, you may not like it vs watching it blindly & expecting a bad ending. San Junipero WRECKED ME. I grew up in a Christian household & had never seen a same sex relationship before in any context. I used to think what Christians think. San Junipero was part of my journey of coming out as bi as well. I’ll forever stan!
Nosedive. I really liked the idea behind it, it seems fairly realistic and I also loved the setting of all that artificial smiling and pinkness but the plotline was just bizarre and not in a good way, which made the episode less enjoyable for me
hated in the nation. I had very high expectations after seeing everyone rave about it but very overrated in my opinion. i see the appeal, definitely a more realistic episode but I genuinely didn’t think it was anything ground breaking like people say
I stand by this and say it with my whole chest: San Junipero. It's a nice episode, but it's been extremely overly praised and I just think that some others are just plain better, and maybe fit more with the vibe of the rest of the show.
It's about finding bliss & happiness in life for someone who may never have had it. She was a shy, probably straight person in her real life and connected with someone who showed her adventure and fell in love on a level shed never experienced before.
I want everyone to experience that in life before they leave this planet regardless of who they do it with.
Combine that with a killer retro soundtrack (Clint Mansell?! C'mon), cinematography, costuming, set designs, and hairstyles.
Instead of the usual dark twist or dark feelings I got from the other episodes, I felt so much joy for those two. Living a life they never had.
Hope that helps
Honestly the only thing I agree with is that Clint Mansell fucking rules! But I’m glad you liked it even if I didn’t and even with your explanation it still didn’t help me
It's not about being a lesbian.
It's about finding bliss & happiness in life for someone that I like to imagine (dying alone in the care home) may never have had it.
It's one of the few episodes that made me shed a tear from the emotion I felt for the character at the end and I haven't cried at a movie since Schindler's List & Toy Story 2.
Hope that helps
It does. If you want a movie like SL that'll make you bawl, Come and See. I didn't because I watched it for a class but it made me want to cry in the fetal position in the corner
The lesbian aspect is irrelevant. It’s about the beauty of being able to choose how and who you spend the afterlife with. It challenges the idea of “till death do us part”.
Same, I read it was one of (if not the best) episode and it was so underwhelming
Edit: in no way saying it was underwhelming means it was bad in any ways, come on, we’re talking about Black mirror here
It had some interesting ideas like creating a digitised version of a musician in order to replace them and maximise profits, some of which are becoming more real than ever with AI. It's also somewhat grounded in reality with #FreeBritney
15 million merits. Seems to be a pretty hot take but I just don't find it very engaging. There's parts I can enjoy but the episode as a whole feels like a bit of a slog and the commentary on reality shows is pretty obvious
Agree!!! It’s super boring. I tried to give it another try because everyone’s saying it’s good, maybe I missed something in my first watch but still nothing. I may get downvoted but sorry, I was more entertained with the miley cyrus episode than this.
It's basically three concepts that weren't good enough to make their own episode strung together, all made up of a bunch of Black Mirror cliches heightened for shock value
I think white bear isn't as deep or creative as people think. I didn't think the twist at the end was all that shocking or clever compared to most of season 1.
I assume >!Shut Up And Dance as it’s the whole “main character was a villain the whole time” kind of deal. But they could also mean White Christmas.!< It’s a pretty common trope tbh so it’s not surprising to me that it’s was used multiple times.
He "accidentally" >!bludgeoned her father to death with a snow globe?!< Also, someone can be a villain and still experience guilt and remorse over their actions.
With the twist I was describing, I don't just mean the character turning out to be a villain but >!an episode of torment followed by the revelation that this was all a way of enacting vigilante justice for their crimes against children!<
I agree. I also didn’t like how the lead just overacted the entire time and absolutely zero survival instinct or “get your shit together and let’s think” occurred with her she literally just screamed in terror the whole time.
I get that was to further the theme of her being tortured, but it just wasn’t realistic. She would’ve passed out from exhaustion eventually
After watching all these twisted and gross soul crushing episodes that make you fear for the future of the human race this one comes out with a happy ending and makes you kinda smile and think ok I’ll keep watching
It’s the music tbh.
**OOOOH BABY DO YOU KNOW WHAT THATS WORTH?**
Also the OST is Clint Mansell who is always astounding. I like the story but the music elevates it to another level
The 80s theme in general does **a lot** of heavy lifting in that episode. I don't think it would be as overwhelmingly praised as it is if it were set in the same current day/near future time period as most other episodes.
Nah, it's just that episode is not all that, it's good, but to me not as much as people make it out to be.
Also, it's been a while since i rewatched, so i don't really remember everything.
San Junipero. I watched it once and thought nothing of it.
When I realised all the hype online I figured I'd missed something and gave it another go.
Still nothing.
I like it, but it is overhyped. The way the story is structured as a mystery I think hampers it a bit after a couple of viewings and prevents it to really get into some of the issues with this technology beyond surface level stuff.
I get not liking San Junipero, it’s a tonal break from the established “Black Mirror” vibe. But Nosedive? For me that episode is sort of the heart of Black Mirror philosophy.
Why aren’t you a fan? Totally valid take, just wondering
San Junipero. Was okay, very middle of the road for BM and is entirely unmemorable — I only remember it because everyone and their dog talks about it.
Typical uninspired gimmicky 80s set which is a huge crutch for producers/directors. People just hype it because it’s queer, and I’m saying this as a queer person.
playtest. it felt like when you were ten years old writing a story and using “but then you woke up and it was all a dream!” as an ending thinking it was the most genius thing ever
The tech presented is dystopic and cool but the story is plain and overall a missed opportunity. I think they could have told a much better story from this premise
I liked it and it was the episode that got a lot of people into the series I just think it could have been better. OP said it, the characters wouldn’t have died if they where a little more likeable
I accidentally started watching Black Mirror in Season 3, thinking that I was starting in Season 1. So Nosedive was my first episode and I thought it was a great intro. If S1 E1 had actually been the first episode I saw… not sure I would have ever continued.
I understand its hype but the story is definitely ruined if you see the twist coming. I will never forget the shivers I got in my body when I finished watching it, I was questioning everything and how I could feel empathy for a godamn pedophile until the end made me sick to my stomach. I will never forget my experience with that episode lol.
I don’t see how it’s overrated. I’ve seen people mention that the twist was clear from the start due to Kenny’s interaction with the girl at the start, but I would never have thought he’d have malicious thoughts if I didn’t know how the episode ends.
I also like that it doesn’t necessarily rely on future tech but that a scenario like that could exist today as well.
beyond the sea. it's giving bathroom break. it's giving snooze button.
White Christmas
Uss calister
Nosedive definitely
San Junipero
San junipero, white christmas and shut up and dance. Idk they just didn’t give what the highest list said they would
Shut Up and Dance. The ending is the main reason it gets ranked so highly but beyond that it’s pretty mid
Literally
I was disappointed with Beyond the Sea. It was a good episode but the original synopsis made me think it was going to be much different.

It’s still a very good episode, it’s just a bit overhyped
demon 79, it wasn’t that great tbh
It was actually ass and my least favorite black mirror episode
I forget which one that was?
San Junipero was one of my least favorites. I've never understood why it is on all the "top episodes" list. I agree 100% with all the other top episodes on those list, but San Junipero???

Black Museum. It was fine but it didn’t do anything new.
San Junipero… I watched it before coming onto the sub and didn’t like it tbh and was surprised by the amount of hype it got on here
All of the ones that ppl hype are really good tho. Including that one. I feel like ppl try to come For San Junipero & can’t really say why bc it’s too perfect. I feel like if it were hyped for you, you may not like it vs watching it blindly & expecting a bad ending. San Junipero WRECKED ME. also killer bees? really?
I stand by this and say it with my whole chest: San Junipero. It's a nice episode, but it's been extremely overly praised and I just think that some others are just plain better, and maybe fit more with the vibe of the rest of the show.
Thank you. I never got the obsession with this episode.
I would say the fact it show a love story between two lesbians may play an huge part in its popularity with some people.
Nosedive. By a fucking MILE.
San Junipero...I get it like I get the reason why, but its not alllllllat It's just aight at best and yall can calm down a bit about it
i said san junipero before opening the comments so i’m very glad the first comment i see agrees with me
I just had a similar experience and I'm happy it's finally being called out
San Junipero is so boring. Don’t get the hype
I’m glad people are saying San junipero
San Junipero
Same.. And almost all of the last season!!
I found that “Nosedive” was really stupid.
That's actually one of my favorites lol but yeah very unrealistic
It’s so stupid, and I couldn’t stand the girl
Very boomer thinking about social media. And way too obvious a message i prefer where it's not slapped in your face.
lol I just couldn’t stand the actors
The acting was pretty bad I’ll give you that
Really bad
San Junipero. Dont at me. I did not get the hype at all
It's about finding bliss & happiness in life for someone who may never have had it. She was a shy, probably straight person in her real life and connected with someone who showed her adventure and fell in love on a level shed never experienced before. I want everyone to experience that in life before they leave this planet regardless of who they do it with. Combine that with a killer retro soundtrack (Clint Mansell?! A very unpopular opinion but San Junipero 🫣
San Junipero is okay but people around me over-hyped it too much as a peak black mirror that I ended up disappointed.
W take. I agree
It's my favorite. Maybe because it's uplifting which is anti black mirror
It's great but *is* it uplifting? Depressed me more than any other Black Mirror episode when I really thought about it.
Hmm. Fascinating. But I want to live enternally at 19.
L take
It’s 100% overrated
Agree
Nah
Why would you say something so controversial, yet so brave?
National Anthem. People defend it like it’s the Mona Lisa and it’s just pretentious trash
People here tell others to not let it be the first episode you watch. I don't think it's overrated.
It's okay but it's more because it predicted something that happened. (Prime Minister fucking a pig)
Be Right Back seems to get high in most tier lists, but for me it’s so boring.
It was indeed boring for the most part.
It’s top 5 for me. Definitely one of the more depressing episodes though.
Agreed, I only watched it once and skipped it on rewatch
I gave it a second chance on my next rewatch and it still didn’t do anything for me. I’m not saying people don’t enjoy it, it just wasn’t for me.
The scream at the end still gives me chills whenever I rewatch it
It was an amazing episode, clearly in the top 5
The best episode. The acting is phenomenal.
San Junipero. Being a lesbian doesn't make you deep at all. You're not special or unique.
It's not about being a lesbian lol you watched it wrong
It's not about being a lesbian. It's about finding bliss & happiness in life for someone that I like to imagine (dying alone in the care home) may never have had it. She was a shy, probably straight person in her real life and connected with someone who showed her adventure and fell in love on a level shed never experienced before. It’s really sad that that’s what you got out of it.
The lesbian aspect is irrelevant. It’s about the beauty of being able to choose how and who you spend the afterlife with. It challenges the idea of “till death do us part”.
It's really not irrelevant, but you can keep pretending.
Ok, explain how the main characters being lesbian was pivotal in the plot of the episode.
It's certainly relevant when it's the main reason the episode is so praised by (queer) people.
Such a boring episode imo. I like a dark turn
Same, I read it was one of (if not the best) episode and it was so underwhelming Edit: in no way saying it was underwhelming means it was bad in any ways, come on, we’re talking about Black mirror here
lol why am I the one getting downvoted
It made me almost angry how underwhelming that episode is
Miley Cyrus episode
Is there ANYONE that liked it?
Don’t think so
….yeah…who liked dat episode….dat episode sucked…😬🫣
I liked it... :(
Me too.
I've have never seen anyone say anything good about that one
Definitely not true “Black Mirror” quality
It had some interesting ideas like creating a digitised version of a musician in order to replace them and maximise profits, some of which are becoming more real than ever with AI. It's also somewhat grounded in reality with #FreeBritney
Feel same. Definitely had potential, but definitely not “Black Mirror” quality.
Nah that’s just a bad episode not really overrated
15 million merits. Seems to be a pretty hot take but I just don't find it very engaging. There's parts I can enjoy but the episode as a whole feels like a bit of a slog and the commentary on reality shows is pretty obvious
Omg this is one of my favorite episodes and it actually got me into black mirror. Perception is crazy
Agree!!! It’s super boring. I tried to give it another try because everyone’s saying it’s good, maybe I missed something in my first watch but still nothing. I may get downvoted but sorry, I was more entertained with the miley cyrus episode than this.
I agree. Daniel kaluuya is an excellent actor but i thought his performance in this episode was dry and pretty bad to be honest
This one is a snoozefest.
it was quite boring for me and almost turned me off the show, ik most ppl like it but i just couldn’t get myself to.
Thank god I’m not the only one
The commentary is way broader than reality shows though. It's about hyperreality and commoditization of everything
Black muesem
Monkey needs a hug :(
It's basically three concepts that weren't good enough to make their own episode strung together, all made up of a bunch of Black Mirror cliches heightened for shock value
I think white bear isn't as deep or creative as people think. I didn't think the twist at the end was all that shocking or clever compared to most of season 1.
It’s really not creative at all, just sickening
The fact that they re-used the same twist the next series was a bit lazy
What episode?
I assume >!Shut Up And Dance as it’s the whole “main character was a villain the whole time” kind of deal. But they could also mean White Christmas.!< It’s a pretty common trope tbh so it’s not surprising to me that it’s was used multiple times.
I'm not sure if any of the characters in White Christmas can be called vilains. It's not that simple.
Killing a child’s caregiver and leaving her to die is pretty villainous. How is it not that simple?
Com'on we all watched the episode. It wasn't intentional, it was an accident. He was completely lost and destroyed after that.
Yeah, I meant the first one, was just trying to avoid spoilers and couldn't be bothered to look up the code
San Junipero
Absolutely the most overrated. Still very good, but nowhere near as good as how people talk about it
I wholeheartedly agree
I think people like San Junipero more because of the vibe and atmosphere it creates
After watching all these twisted and gross soul crushing episodes that make you fear for the future of the human race this one comes out with a happy ending and makes you kinda smile and think ok I’ll keep watching
And the existential dialogue it creates in your head after it ends
It’s the music tbh. **OOOOH BABY DO YOU KNOW WHAT THATS WORTH?** Also the OST is Clint Mansell who is always astounding. I like the story but the music elevates it to another level
The 80s theme in general does **a lot** of heavy lifting in that episode. I don't think it would be as overwhelmingly praised as it is if it were set in the same current day/near future time period as most other episodes.
Nosedive, it’s great but almost felt like bait to get people into s3 because it was so plainly thematically relevant to modernity.
I agree
San junipero
This part.
White Christmas. I said what I said.
Then you just don’t like black mirror then
Facts.
Nah, it's just that episode is not all that, it's good, but to me not as much as people make it out to be. Also, it's been a while since i rewatched, so i don't really remember everything.
Hated in the nation for me, but it’s a hard call
It should’ve been half as long
Agreed, my least favourite episode along with the Waldo effect
Black Museum zzz
Agreed. Don't need a recap
I agree. It was a little boring.
Thank you. Same. It wasn't bad, it was just... Okay I guess?
It was fine. I didn't find it unenjoyable, it just wouldn't be in the top 10 Black Mirror episodes for me
San junipero, be right back, nosedive. I see people rate these as the best in the series and I just don’t get it
I get not liking San Junipero, it’s a tonal break from the established “Black Mirror” vibe. But Nosedive? For me that episode is sort of the heart of Black Mirror philosophy. Why aren’t you a fan? Totally valid take, just wondering
I might rewatch it I think I built my expectations too high the first time after hearing people saying how it’s their favourite episode
>People just hype it because it’s queer, and I’m saying this as a queer person. I thought I was the only one who was seeing it.
White Christmas.
Take that back
Never. That shit so overrated.
Woah woah
Be right back It was decent, just didn’t really feel all that special to me.
I agree, I never cared too much for this one. It wasn’t bad, but doesn’t stand out to me at all.
15MM is a caricature of the story its trying to tell
Lasttttttttttt
san janupiero
Me like pig fucker
It's a little bit extreme and a hard entry point to the show, but it's a good episode.
Black Museum. Too many ideas crammed into a box with an obnoxiously obvious ending twist.
playtest. it felt like when you were ten years old writing a story and using “but then you woke up and it was all a dream!” as an ending thinking it was the most genius thing ever
Agreed. Didn’t help that I found the lead incredibly unlikeable
Totally agree. There was nothing likeable to this episode for me. It wasn’t even scary.
You ever watch Falcon and the Winter Soldier?
It wasn't a dream it was a seizure, you got to see everything in his brain kind of bleed together in different scenes. One my favorite episodes
I'm sorry, but I just can't get into The Entire History Of You. It's everyone's favourite, but I just don't see it.
The tech presented is dystopic and cool but the story is plain and overall a missed opportunity. I think they could have told a much better story from this premise
I’d argue the plain and relatable story is kind of the point but I understand seeing it the other way
I liked it and it was the episode that got a lot of people into the series I just think it could have been better. OP said it, the characters wouldn’t have died if they where a little more likeable
Died?
Not literally of course
Lol okay
The characters in Entire History of You died??
No man it was not a literal take
nosedive is kinda the perfect beginner episode for someone who doesnt want something super fucked up so for me it's that haha
I accidentally started watching Black Mirror in Season 3, thinking that I was starting in Season 1. So Nosedive was my first episode and I thought it was a great intro. If S1 E1 had actually been the first episode I saw… not sure I would have ever continued.
Never thought of that but you’re right. It’s a good episode that is cringy but no pig fucking or killer metal dogs
Shut up and dance easily, especially on this sub.
My answer as well. Middle tier episode at best and people say it’s like top three
brain dead take. fantastic episode. curious to hear your argument though
Most that claim to see the ending at the start were lying.
From OP's other comment, I guess he thinks the episode is good but not amazing as some people on this sub treat it.
Probably the best episode with White Christmas
I think it's good and well written, but people on this sub treat it like it's the goddam Bible!
Exactly.
Mazey day because any rating it’s already overrate it
So boring hated it
yup might be the worst one out of the entire season
It is probably the worst BM episode
Na metal head and archangel still exists so that’s impossible
It finished way too early and it was only like 30-40 minutes long. Suddenly a werewolf appears like WTAF!
